BoF's founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed speaks with the BoF 500 cover star about the ups and downs of her personal and professional trajectory and what the West needs to understand about India and its rich, diverse culture.  Background: Deepika Padukone, one of Bollywood's highest-paid actors, started her career as a former professional badminton player before appearing in her first film, “Om Shanti Om,” in 2007, for which she won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. In 2017, she crossed over to Hollywood with the action film “XXX: Return of Xander Cage.” More recently, she's become a force in fashion as a global brand ambassador for Louis Vuitton, Adidas, Levi's and Cartier. Padukone grew up far from the limelight and was an outsider to both the film and fashion industries. Setting herself up on the global stage as a young Indian woman, she had to combat preconceptions at every corner, she said.  “Of course, the hustle is much harder [as an outsider]. You've got to wait much longer for the right opportunities,” she says. “But also, from my perspective, the gratification is so much more.” This week on The BoF Podcast, BoF's founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed speaks with the actor and BoF 500 cover star about the highs and lows of her career and why India needs more recognition from the West on the global stage.     Key Insights: Padukone said her heritage is fundamental to who she is and how she represents herself on the global stage. “I just feel like India has so much to offer and I've been able to do everything that I do, just being Indian and being based out here,” she says. “In a way that feels authentic to me and to who I am.” Padukone says Indians are still stereotyped — especially in Hollywood. “You are the scientist. You are the computer geek. You are the taxi driver. You are the therapist. You are the owner of a convenience store,” she says. “I've had my fans ask me why I've not done more [global] movies. But that's not what I'm settling for, because I am — and we are — so much more than that.” Padukone says fashion brands need to understand more about India's rich heritage. . “It's extremely diverse. It's not one India, it's many Indias,” she says. “And as Indians, we're also extremely proud of our history, our culture and our heritage.” After being diagnosed with clinical depression, Padukone felt the need to open up conversations about mental illness in India. “No one in India had spoken about it like this before, and it felt to me that there was this huge burden on our country's shoulders that everyone was dealing with, but dealing with silently,” Padukone says. Debabrata Saikia, Leader of the opposition in Assam Legislative Assembly, has criticized the decision of the Union Home Ministry which had downgraded the security cover level of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi from ‘Z+' to ‘Z' category. In a letter to Union home minister Amit Shah, the MLA from Nazira Constituency called the current government “vindictive” and blames the government for withdrawing security cover of those who are critical of the BJP. Singer Zubeen Garg from Assam, who has been participating in anti-CAA agitations in the state, has vowed to not shave until CAA is scrapped. Garg was earlier quoted as saying that he would rather “die” then allow Citizenship Amendment Act in Assam. CAA aims to protect religiously persecuted Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan by giving them Indian Citizenship. The cut-off date for those to be given citizenship in India has been fixed at, on or before 31st December 2014. Patients queued up to avail services at Lifeline Express, the world's first hospital train, which reached Gauripur Railway Station in Dhubri on Saturday. Deputy Commissioner Anant Lal Gyani inaugurated the train. Patients will be treated free of cost, according to reports. Last year, the train reached Churaibari Railway Station of North Tripura district. Lifeline Express, a train healthcare service, was set up as a joint initiative of Impact India Foundation, Indian Railways and Ministry of Health in 1991. JP Nadda was declared BJP National President for the year 2019-22 at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi. The party which tweeted a congratulatory message in Hindi informed that the party's National Election Officer, Shri Radha Mohan Singh, declared Shri JP Nadda unopposed as the BJP National President for the year 2019-22. Nadda was earlier the party's working president and Amit Shah was the BJP National President. In a widely shared TikTok challenge video, Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone states three of her favourite looks to a TikTok user @faby_makeupartist. The actress says that her favourite looks being Om Shanti Om, Piku and Chhapaak. The user then tries those looks. Many Twitter users have accused her of being “insensitive” and “demeaning” for turning the look from Chhapaak into a TikTok challenge. The movie directed by Meghna Gulzar is based on the real-life story of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. Padukone essayed the role of Agarwal in the movie. Bibek Debroy, author and Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister was conferred the Prolific Author Award at the SKOCH Public Policy Lit Fest. The award is part of an endeavor to bring public policy literature to the forefront of public discourse and decision-making.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi who was about to visit the state for the third Khelo India Youth Games to begin this Friday, has cancelled his visit to avoid anti-CAA agitations. The third Khelo India Youth Games will be held in Guwahati from January 10 to 22. The All Assam Students' Union (AASU), Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), had announced a series of agitations if the PM visited Assam. Cabinet approves Rs 5,559 crore capital grant to Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) for setting up of North-East Natural Gas and Pipeline Grid. The entire project which will see 1,656 km long pipeline is expected to cost Rs. 9265 crore. The project apart from developing an industrial climate in the region will generate employment and contribute towards economic growth. Expansion of the North-East Natural Gas grid though IGGL will further increase the share of clean fuels in India's energy basket other than being in line with PM Modi's vision of ‘Purvodaya-Rise of the East.' Terming Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal as a betrayer, All Assam Students' Union (AASU) chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya on Tuesday said that “from being a ‘Jatir Nayak' (People's hero), he (Sonowal) has become a protector of illegal infiltrators”. Bhattacharya was talking to the reporters in New Delhi on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Conservationists working with the Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros species have welcomed the birth of a rhino calf at the Manas National Park in Assam. The calf was born to six-year-old mother rhino R3A a few days ago. Laisri, a 15-year-old grandmother of the baby rhino was brought to Manas from the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, according to media reports. Assam is known for its biodiversity. The state has chalked out plans to boost the population of rhinos to 3000 in 2020. Assam Roll Ball Association announced its team for the 11th Mini National Roll Ball championship, which will be held at Kurukshetra, from January 10. For Union Budget 2020, the BJP led central government has invited ideas and suggestions from the public. People can share their ideas at mygov.in Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi tweeted, “The Union Budget represents the aspirations of 130 crore Indians and lays out the path towards India's development. I invite you all to share your ideas and suggestions for this year's Budget on MyGov.” The Union Budget 2020-21 will be presented on 1 February. In what can be seen as a nationwide solidarity movement, students of prestigious St Stephens College in Delhi boycotted classes, read the Preamble in support of JNU students. They also opposed CAA as well as NRC. “At St Stephen's today. Students boycott classes (very, very rare) to read the Preamble to the Constitution and to support and say #WeStandWithJNU. And #NoCAANoNRC,” read a tweet. Leaders from across the political spectrum have condemned the attacks on the students and teachers of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) inside the campus. Yesterday, Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone showed up at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) during a gathering, where JNU students' union (JNUSU) president Aishe Ghosh was speaking. Former JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar was also present during the event. Padukone was seen standing with the students who were there to talk about the attacks that had taken place on the campus a few days ago. Her presence during the event was lauded by a lot of people, but it also invited the ire of many others who called her “opportunistic” and touted her presence as a PR stunt for her upcoming movie ‘Chhapaak.'
