Vivek Garg, MD, President and CEO of the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), joins Josh Israel, MD and Sean Cavanaugh to talk about the future of quality measurement in healthcare. While acknowledging clinician frustration with sometimes fragmented or conflicting quality metrics, Dr. Garg shares NCQA's strategy to harmonize CMS quality measurement frameworks including the new Advanced Primary Care (APC) program. APC leverages interoperable data and outcome-oriented signals to align healthcare stakeholders in value-based care. He then turns to the GDP methodology shift from a 2011–12 base year to 2022–23, a recalibration meant to reflect changes in the economy's structure. In this episode of Conceptually Speaking, I sit down with Karis Jones, Sarah Jerasa, and Rabani Garg, friends of the show and the team behind the award-winning #HackYourStack initiative, to talk about what it actually means to teach digital and networked texts and cultivate literacies in the plural. #HackYourStack started as a play on NCTE's Build Your Stack initiative and as a response to its Critical Media Literacy Task Force's call for more practical digital and multimodal resources for teacher educators and practitioners. Over the course of several years' worth of conference hangs and Zoom calls, we eventually developed a Notion database of educational resources organized by different modalities (video essays, fan fiction, hip-hop, TikTok, webtoons, gaming, podcasts, digital storytelling). Each Notion card contained curated scholarly research, mentor texts, and teacher-facing instructional materials all in the same place. It is truly a one stop shop for all things multimodal composing—analogue, digital, and otherwise.Over the course of our dialogue, we get into the differences between EdTech and (what I referred to in a previous article as) MADTech, what it looks like to treat young people as knowers rather than casualties of a never ending “literacy crisis,” and why a total retreat to RETVRN pedagogies misreads the post-literacy problem entirely. There are even some cringe confessionals about times where Karis and I tried and failed to be cool young millennial teachers before we learned about more responsive and participatory ways to invite youth culture into our classrooms. This is a conversation long in the making considering the work we've put into this database, various workshops, and even a Special Issue with the Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education (CITE) journal. The culmination of which was our receiving the 2025 English Language Arts Teacher Educators' National Technology Leadership Fellowship award. He explains why surgical NEC is an independent risk factor for long-term neurodevelopmental impairment, how aggressively managing hypotension at the time of diagnosis may protect both the brain and the kidneys, and why the severity of NEC-associated AKI should be used as a prognostic tool in counseling families. About Green Silicon Valley Green Silicon (GSV) Valley is a nonprofit organization founded and led by Wilcox High School students Ayush Garg, Dev Shah and Abhi Tenneti that aims to make environmental education more accessible and personal, while also training future climate leaders on climate education. GSV seeks to realize its mission by creating hands-on kits for elementary and middle schoolers to learn about climate phenomena and solutions, and sending high school students to present classes and sessions. Through this process, they are able to spread climate education to younger generations, while also helping high school students learn how to communicate about climate issues. This helps prepare future generations of climate leaders, as well as instilling an early understanding of the importance of climate work. According to co-founder Ayush Garg, the project arose from the business club when Garg, Shah, and Tenneti were awarded a $5,000 grant from Silicon Valley Power which allowed them to conduct six presentations at Peterson Middle School (Green Energy Futures). Each presentation includes hands-on activities such as building wind turbine models, creating water filtration systems, and running erosion experiments to help depict different climate topics. According to GSV, they have managed to reach 680 students so far across 12 partner schools in 4 different countries (Green Silicon Valley). Shah says that GSV is seeking to expand its reach to more high school chapters and partner elementary schools across the Bay Area.  As GSV grows, it will likely run into issues with obtaining sufficient funding to carry out its goals. According to Shah, “It's gonna be a lot harder to fund international and national presentations. That's definitely the hardest part right now, where we have the volunteers, we have the teachers, we have the students, but we just need the funding for the kids.” Further, the project has run into some issues making its way into classrooms, with conflicting schedules and curriculum. GSV is accepting donations, volunteer and intern applicants, and presentation requests in order to continue expanding. On this episode of the Nomad Futurist Podcast, cohosts Nabeel Mahmood and Phillip Koblence sit down with Abhishek Garg, Senior Real Estate Development Manager at Amazon Web Services (AWS) and an Nomad Futurist Foundation Ambassador. Abhishek shares his journey from a curious child in a small Indian border town to designing and building massive AI-ready data center campuses that power the cloud. Along the way, he explains why digital infrastructure and the skilled trades that support it are the unsung backbone of the AI era. Abhishek describes his role at AWS as his “dream job”, combining engineering, finance, and real estate to deliver the physical foundations of AI. His non-linear career — from engineering in India to real estate strategy at Ernst & Young — taught him to value power, kilowatts, and infrastructure in addition to traditional square footage: "The coding you are doing, the software development you are creating, that's going to be stored somewhere, and that's the physical infrastructure I'm there to provide." Curiosity shaped Abhishek's path from an early age. Watching his father develop properties, he became fascinated by turning empty land into buildings. Although he first pursued engineering, he later returned to real estate, earning a master's degree at Arizona State University for hands-on development experience. Throughout the episode, he stresses that the cloud is physical: concrete, steel, and power. Building AI campuses is a complex, multi-year process requiring vast land, utilities, and coordination. Many underestimate the scale behind tech infrastructure: "I believe a lot of people think cloud is abstract, but it actually requires millions of square feet of land and building. I help build cloud and provide it a home.” Recognizing the human capital gap in digital infrastructure, Abhishek encourages valuing the transferable skills of electricians, engineers, and construction professionals. He advocates for short, intensive programs to expose students and mid-career professionals to the industry and its high-paying opportunities: "No matter what degree or background you have, if you are curious and willing to learn, you can definitely get into it. There's no stopping you." He stresses the importance of educating communities about the critical role of data centers and AI in daily life and uses platforms like Nomad Futurist to bridge knowledge gaps. While optimistic about AI's potential, he reinforces that human intelligence remains essential: "AI is the groundwork for everything. Help build it and get excited about it… This is just the beginning." Abhishek's journey shows that building the future of technology requires vision, persistence, and a willingness to embrace unconventional paths. His story reminds us that the most powerful innovations are grounded in curiosity, human skill, and the infrastructure that makes it all possible.
