Episode Notes Marriott and IHG have each announced plans to add 100 hotels to their portfolio in Europe, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill. Marriott said it would add those roughly 100 properties by the end of 2026 through hotel conversions — deals where the owner of an existing hotel assumes a new brand affiliation — or converting existing buildings into hotels. Marriott already has more than 800 properties in Europe. As for IHG, the company is planning to team up with Novum Hospitality, one of Germany's largest family-run hotel groups, to add a little more than 100 hotels to its footprint in Germany. Next, several major airlines are still taking a cautious approach to operating flights in the Middle East following Iran's attack against Israel this weekend, writes Airlines Editor Gordon Smith. While the European Union Aviation Safety Agency said there's currently no overflight risk for civil aviation, some airlines are extending route cancellations and diversions. Virgin Atlantic said on Monday it's temporarily avoiding the airspace of Iraq, Iran and Israel, resulting in some flights from the UK to India being adjusted. Meanwhile, the Lufthansa Group said its flights to Lebanon and Iran will remain suspended until at least Thursday. Finally, Accor CEO Sébastien Bazin sees enormous room for growth in India. India Reporter Bulbul Dhawan delves into the reasons for Bazin's optimism. Bazin described India, where the company operates 62 hotels, as an untapped market. He noted that the top five hotel operators in India collectively have less than 1,000 hotels compared to 25,000 in China. In addition, Dhawan cited India's rapidly growing middle class — a 2024 Skift Megatrend — as another reason for Bazin's belief that business in India will boom. Bazin also said he saw a lot of potential in India's secondary and tertiary cities, which are home to roughly 1 billion people. Presenter/Producer: Jose Marmolejos

How often do we take for granted the power of understanding every word we hear or read? This week, I'm chatting with Anuja Dhawan from Dübverse to dive into how AI is making the world a more inclusive place through content accessibility. It's not just about reaching more people; it's about truly connecting with them, no matter where they are in the world. For many of us, navigating content in English is a breeze, but imagine hitting a wall of text in a language you barely understand. This is the daily reality for countless individuals, impacting their work and their ability to engage with content that matters. In the past, bridging this gap meant pouring endless hours and significant resources into translations, often with mixed results. Now, AI is shifting the landscape, making it simpler and more efficient to bring content to everyone, in a language they can understand. This episode is more than a discussion; it's a practical look at how we're moving forward, breaking down barriers and making sure that when it comes to content, no one is left behind. So join us as we map out this journey towards a more inclusive world of content, powered by AI. Do you know someone struggling with a gaming addiction? Gaming can be a great way to decompress and relax, but when it starts to interfere with your normal functions and day-to-day life, it becomes a problem. In this episode of From Survivor to Thriver, we sat down with Dr. Agam Dhawan to discuss the signs and symptoms of gaming addiction, what causes it, and how you can get the help that's needed. Dr. Agam Dhawan is a psychiatrist who specializes in treating mental illness (depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD & video game addiction) in male gamers through his private practice called Level Up Psychiatry. Growing up he felt lonely, felt girls didn't like him and no one wanted to be his friend. Gaming was his escape. He'd daydream until the bell rang, come home, binge Oreo cookies, and game in the basement until it got dark. And honestly? Agam loved gaming. Eight years later as a psychiatrist, it's now his mission to help young men level up in real life. He could've gone down the dark road of being lonely, spending Friday nights on video games or porn and he's grateful he didn't go down this path. Today, he shows men they can level up their mental health, fitness, grooming, and social skills in real life, just like stats in their favorite video game. In today's episode, we cover: The difference between a healthy relationship with gaming and a gaming addictionThe role of male parental figures in seeking out mental health careHow to create boundaries around gaming How motivational interviewing can help understand addictionThe true danger behind video game addictionThe psychological reason that gaming is so addicting, particularly in menHow you can level up in real life The type of help available to people with gaming addictionsKey signs and symptoms of someone with a gaming addictionWhat caregivers should and shouldn't do for those with addictionWe hope you enjoyed our conversation with Agam! In keeping with this season's excursions away from Deep Convection's traditional focus on climate science, this episode features Abhisheik Dhawan. While he's not a climate scientist, his innovative ideas intersect with climate change, development, and finance in a unique way. He is currently a Sustainable Finance and Partnerships Specialist at the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), an organization that focuses on providing essential financial support to the world's least developed countries. In that role, Abhisheik is responsible for coming up with innovative mechanisms for providing sustainable finance to the world's poorest countries. And the mechanism he has come up with is called Climate Insurance Linked Resilient Infrastructure Finance, or CILRIF. The premise of CILRIF is to grant long-term insurance to cities against weather and climate related calamities, such as floods and storms. Then, when cities actively invest in resilience or adaptation methods, they receive a cut in the premium. So CILRIF's ultimate aim is to assign a tangible price tag to climate adaptation in urban settings, thus unlocking capital for it. While it might sound fairly straightforward, this is in some ways quite a radical proposal. For instance, the long-term contracts it proposes are nearly unheard of in the world of property insurance. CILRIF is not operational yet, but for nearly three years, Abhisheik has been at the helm of a volunteer working group, collaborating with insurers, academics, engineers, and finance experts to set the CILRIF wheels in motion. "[What we want] is resilient cities, whatever that means for that city. [...] You need to define for every city on the planet, […] what is the extreme climate it is most exposed to? We don't want to look at financing for regular floods […] which have been happening every year […]. But looking at a 200-year flood […], which will have a devastating effect on a community, how do you protect from that? And actually if you protect from that, then you will automatically reduce the damage from regular floods as well." Of course, Adam also talks with Abhisheik about his whole life and career, starting with his origins in Lucknow/India, his training and early employment as a mining engineer, how he transitioned to finance and then made it to the US, to do a graduate degree at Columbia, and then into his current role. The interview with Abhisheik was recorded in March 2023. Abhisheik's website at the UNCD

The book “Memories in the Service of the Hindu Nation: The Afterlife of the Partition” by anthropologist Dr. Pranav Kohli presents the findings of an extensive ethnographic study conducted over fourteen months, focusing on survivors of the Partition from west Punjab and the North-West Frontier Province. The research was conducted in Delhi and its surroundings between 2017 and 2018. The author explores the connection between the global rise of far-right nationalism, the process of globalization, and the memories of victimhood. Specifically, the book delves into Hindu nationalism in India, shedding light on the tragic consequences that can arise from a history of trauma. The central question posed by the book and this conversation with Pranav Kohli and writer, researcher and lawyer Prannv Dhawan is: "What does it mean to remember the Partition in the time of fascism?" Kohli and Dhawan discuss the experiences of displacement and everyday violence resulting from the political policies of Partition, drawing relevance to the current global context of forced displacement across national borders. Through an analysis of trauma reincription in Partition memories and its correlation to the justifications of contemporary Hindu nationalist violence, Kohli elucidates the cycles of violence and the ways in which Hindu nationalism shapes the narratives of Hindu Partition survivors. By examining the deployment of memory to reinforce notions of national belonging and exclusion, Kohli contributes to the understanding of the increasing xenophobia in multicultural democracies. The book addresses the perplexing phenomenon of how "mob" violence can be attributed to outsiders without individuals recalling or acknowledging their own acts of violence. In this episode of BIC Talks Dhawan speaks to Kohli about his analysis, linking memory, sacrifice, and theodicy, offering a novel conceptual lens to connect the Partition of India in 1947 with contemporary homegrown Hindu fascism and provides thought-provoking ground work to anthropologists studying religion, nationalism, and memory, as well as researchers focusing on modern Indian cultural politics.
