Niet alleen waren er het voorbije weekend nieuwe studentenprotesten in Iran, ook richtte Amerikaans president Donald Trump zijn vizier op het Iraanse regime. De kans is groot dat Trump Iran zal aanvallen, als er donderdag geen nucleair akkoord is. Moeten we een grootschalige oorlog in het Midden-Oosten vrezen? “We kunnen elke dag wakker worden met het nieuws dat er zware Amerikaanse bombardementen zijn geweest op Iran”, waarschuwt Midden-Oostencorrespondent Jorn De Cock. Volgens hem is de vraag niet of, maar wanneer Trump de aanval in zal zetten. De Amerikaanse troepenopbouw in het Midden-Oosten is dus geen blufpoker van de president. Twee vliegdekschepen, een oorlogsvloot én troepen uit Israël zijn klaar voor een grote militaire operatie. De inzet? Het Iraanse regime van ayatollah Khamenei omverwerpen. Zelf lijken de Iraniërs ook klaar voor een regimewissel. “Al weet je dat niet zeker, de vrije meningsuiting staat zo onder druk dat er zéér weinig info beschikbaar is”, duidt Jorn. “En er is niemand die weet wat er zal gebeuren als het regime effectief valt.” Zal Trump de trekker overhalen en overgaan tot oorlog? Maar kan dat zonder buitenlandse hulp, en wat na de val? Het is lang niet de eerste protestgolf in Iran. Telkens drukte het regime die met harde repressie de kop in, zonder de bevolking beterschap te bieden. “Maar of het regime van de ayatollahs dat nog heel lang kan volhouden, is eerder onwaarschijnlijk”, zegt Jorn De Cock, onze correspondent in het Midden-Oosten. “Khamenei is een oude man en een koppigaard die geen toegevingen wil doen.” Volgens Jorn is het daarom niet uitgesloten dat een kliek binnen het regime bereid is om Khamenei op te offeren als het islamitische regime daardoor kan overleven. Alleen weten we niet wat er zich achter de schermen van dat regime allemaal afspeelt. Feit is wel dat de ayatollahs enorm zwak staan, en in de regio steeds eenzamer zijn. Het is al 12 dagen onrustig in Iran. In Teheran begonnen de protesten, maar inmiddels gaan er in steden over het hele land mensen de straat op om te protesteren tegen het regime van Ayatollah. Bij de protesten wordt de overheid openlijk gescandeerd, waar de regering behoorlijk hard tegen optreedt. Toch is er weinig media-aandacht voor in Nederland. Volgens Paul Römer, oud-directeur radio en tv bij Talpa, wordt het "ondergesneeuwd" door de sneeuwval in Nederland, de Amerikaanse inval in Venezuela en Trumps doel om Groenland in te nemen. "Maar wat daar gebeurt is heel bijzonder en kan gevolgen hebben voor Europa." Eveline Bijlsma, verslaggever bij De Telegraaf, stelt dat het ingewikkeld is om de verhalen vanuit Iran deze kant op te krijgen, omdat er maar weinig correspondenten daar zijn en het gevaarlijk kan zijn om je als Iraniër uit te spreken. "Het is een regime waar we zo snel mogelijk van af moeten willen. Als die hoop gloort, is dat belangrijk." Er bestaat een kans dat Trump zich zal mengen in de protesten. Israël en Iran blijven elkaar bestoken met raketten. In Iran zorgt het ervoor dat de woede richting de ayatollahs verder wordt aangewakkerd, maar desondanks ligt een regime change niet voor de hand, denkt Arabist Jan Jaap de Ruiter. 'Het gaat de Iraniërs natuurlijk ook te ver om blij te zijn met de Israëlische aanvallen', denkt De Ruiter. Ook is er geen krachtige oppositie. 'Wat er nog van de Iraanse oppositie over is zit voornamelijk in het buitenland. En de oppositie in eigen land is keihard neergeslagen.' Ook denkt De Ruiter dat de dood van Khamenei er niet toe zal leiden dat er iets gaat veranderen. 'Er staat wel een opvolger klaar.' De grote vraag die boven de markt hangt is of Amerika zich gaat mengen in de oorlog. Trump hint erop dat hij dat nu niet van plan is. 'Maar het enige constante aan Trump is zijn grilligheid', aldus De Ruiter, die ook denkt dat de enige mogelijkheid voor Trump om geloofwaardig in te grijpen is om dat kort te doen, met direct daarna onderhandelingen. Het Iraanse regime probeert critici binnen de Iraanse diaspora het zwijgen op te leggen, ook in Nederland. Deze repressie gaat verder dan intimidatie en bedreigingen: mishandelingen en zelfs liquidaties worden niet geschuwd. Een schrijnend voorbeeld hiervan is de moord op de Iraanse politiek activist Ahmad Mola Nissi in 2017. Hij werd op klaarlichte dag in Den Haag doodgeschoten. Ondanks dat de AIVD op de hoogte was van de dreiging en Mola Nissi meerdere keren alarm sloeg bij de politie, kreeg hij geen bescherming. Nieuw onderzoek van Investico laat zien dat de Nederlandse overheid weinig lijkt te hebben geleerd van deze tragedie.
