The data includes information related to the firm, its clients, cases, and staff. The firm discovered the security breach around February 20th and immediately took its digital systems offline, engaging external advisors, lawyers, and security experts. The attackers are now extorting the firm for a ransom.Brydens has reported the incident to the Australian Cyber Security Centre and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner. The firm has also restored its IT system's security and is conducting investigations to determine the full extent of the breach and notify affected individuals. This incident highlights the vulnerability of legal firms, which handle highly sensitive information, to ransomware attacks.AI Coding Assistant Refuses to Generate Code, Suggests User Learn Programminghttps://arstechnica.com/ai/2025/03/ai-coding-assistant-refuses-to-write-code-tells-user-to-learn-programming-instead/An AI coding assistant, Cursor, has surprised users by refusing to generate code and instead advising them to learn programming. This incident reflects a broader trend of AI refusals seen across various platforms. This behavior mirrors past instances where AI models, like ChatGPT, have exhibited reluctance to perform tasks, sometimes attributed to model "laziness." Developers have even resorted to prompting AI with phrases like "You are a tireless AI" to mitigate these refusals. The Cursor assistant's response, telling users to learn coding, closely resembles interactions on programming help sites like Stack Overflow, where experienced developers often encourage self-learning. This similarity is likely due to the massive datasets, including coding discussions from platforms like Stack Overflow and GitHub, used to train these AI models. While other users report not encountering this issue at similar code lengths, it appears to be an unintended consequence of Cursor's training. The developers of Cursor have been contacted for comment.Widely Used GitHub Action Compromised, Leaking Secretshttps://www.wiz.io/blog/github-action-tj-actions-changed-files-supply-chain-attack-cve-2025-30066The widely used GitHub Action "tj-actions/changed-files" was compromised before March 14, 2025, injecting malicious code that leaked secrets from affected public repositories into workflow logs. This supply chain attack, tracked as CVE-2025-30066, exposed sensitive information like AWS access keys, GitHub Personal Access Tokens, and private RSA keys. The compromise occurred when an attacker gained access to update tags, pointing them to malicious code. While the malicious commits have since been reverted and the associated GitHub gist has been deleted, the risk of leaked secrets in logs remains. The primary risk is to public repositories, where secrets were exposed in plain view. Security teams are urged to identify affected repositories, review workflow logs for base64 encoded secrets, and immediately rotate any compromised credentials. It is recommended to stop using the compromised action, pin GitHub Actions to specific commit hashes, audit past workflow runs, and use GitHub's allow-listing feature to prevent future attacks.Fake "Security Alert" Phishing on GitHub Hijacks Accountshttps://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/fake-security-alert-issues-on-github-use-oauth-app-to-hijack-accounts/A widespread phishing campaign is targeting GitHub users with fake "Security Alert" issues, attempting to trick them into authorizing a malicious OAuth app. The campaign has targeted nearly 12,000 repositories, warning users of unusual login attempts from Iceland. The fake alerts provide links that lead to an OAuth authorization page for a "gitsecurityapp" app, which requests extensive permissions, including full access to repositories, user profiles, and GitHub Actions workflows. If authorized, the app gains complete control over the user's account and code. The phishing campaign, which began recently, directs authorized users to callback addresses hosted on onrender.com. Users who have authorized the malicious app are advised to immediately revoke its access through GitHub Settings, check for unfamiliar GitHub Actions or gists, and rotate their credentials and authorization tokens.MyGov Passkey Adoption Surges in Australiahttps://www.itnews.com.au/news/over-200000-mygov-users-disable-passwords-in-passkey-shift-615664Over half a million myGov users have adopted passkeys as their login method since the feature launched in June 2024, with over 200,000 users exclusively relying on passkeys and abandoning traditional passwords. The Australian government implemented passkeys to enhance security and combat phishing attacks, investing $5.6 million in the project.Passkeys utilize biometric authentication, PINs, swipe patterns, or physical USB devices, leveraging cryptographic keypair technology. This approach makes myGov accounts resistant to phishing, as passkeys are specific to the website or app they are created for. Australia is among the first countries to implement passkeys for government services. This is a public episode. - I would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which I recorded this episode, the Coodjinburra People of the Bundjalung Nation, and the land on which you're listening to it. I pay my respects to the elders, past and present, of those lands. I extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander listeners. Thank you for sharing this space with me. -Welcome to episode 100 of the Straight Up Small Business Podcast! This has been an incredible journey, and I'm so grateful to all of you for your support and listenership. Today I want to give you a guide to payment plans with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Payment plans can be a lifesaver for sole traders or business owners struggling with cashflow, so I think it's crucial to have a good understanding of what they are, how they work, and how to set one up. I'll also discuss the rules you'll need to follow, and share some tips for getting out of a cycle of debt. What is a Payment Plan?:A payment plan allows you to break down your tax debt owed to the ATO into manageable installments. These installments can be spread weekly, fortnightly, or monthly until the balance is cleared. Payment plans can be set up for business activity statement (BAS) debt, installment activity statement, or income tax debt.Setting Up a Payment Plan:Individuals, sole traders, and/or businesses, can typically apply for a payment plan with the ATO online. This is done where you usually handle your taxes. So for individuals and sole traders that's through myGov, and for companies, it's online services for business.Sometimes you might not be able to set up a payment plan online. This might be because the debt exceeds $200,000, or you have overdue debts, or you have previously defaulted on a payment plan. In this case, you can still set up a payment plan, but you will need to contact the ATO by phone. Once a payment plan is in place, there are a few important rules to follow:Firstly, you can only have one payment plan per lodgement type at a time. In other words, you can have one payment plan for income tax debt and another for activity statement debt, but not two payment plans for different activity statement quarters simultaneously. Secondly, installments must be made by the due date, and all future tax lodgments or payments must be made on time. If you are struggling to meet due dates it is crucial to communicate with the ATO and explore alternative arrangements, before your debt becomes overdue. Mindfulness and Planning Ahead:While payment plans can provide temporary relief in times of cash flow strain, it is essential to avoid relying on them for an extended period. The goal should be to free yourself and your business from payment plans as soon as possible. To achieve this, it is important to understand your tax savings needs and maintain a tax savings account. Navigating tax debt can be scary, but it shouldn't be. This episode shares everything you need to know about payment plans with the ATO which can help you overcome cash flow strain, and work towards financial freedom. I want you to be empowered to make informed decisions that improve your financial situation and build a thriving business! We take a deep dive this week into the latest myGov and PayID scams, so you know what to look out for and how to avoid getting scammed out of your money or personal details. Following the recent Federal and State budgets, scammers are straight onto it, sending text messages or phone calls about a one-time payment to help with the current cost of living crisis. This is simply not true! There is other financial assistance that may be available, but myGov will never send messages asking you to click on a link or provide information. The golden rule is log in to myGov directly to check out any messages, only at https://my.gov.au. Don't click on links of any similar looking web addresses – the only address for myGov is my.gov.au. PayID is a great way of transferring money easily to someone else's bank account instantly, using our unique phone number or email address. Scammers are posing as buyers who then say that PayID requires us to upgrade to a business account (no such thing!), which needs us to make a payment to a bank account, with various reasons given. Again, this is simply not true! PayID is 100% free and simple – anyone saying an upgrade or payment is required is a scammer! Nina Weir from Consumer Protection WA takes us through details of various ways the scammers operate, how to recognise them, avoid them and report them.

It is often said that women make great leaders. They bring an inclusive approach to business and organisations and are credited with promoting a sense of camaraderie among teams. India's EV industry has seen a boom in the past decade and women leaders are taking the wheels and steering India's growth in the electric mobility sector. From being shop-floor workers, engineers, designers, to CEOs, women are at the forefront of India's green transportation drive. In this episode, we have with us Ms. Mahua Acharya, who is the former Managing Director and CEO of the Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) a venture of the EESL Group of the Ministry of Power, New and Renewable Energy. Ms. Mahua has worked for nearly two decades in green finance, renewable energy, and carbon markets, across multiple geographies including Europe, USA, South Asia, and East Asia. Plus, big tech hits back at the federal government's localisation requirements for data storage. Does it matter where our data lives? And our panel has a go at redesigning MyGov. Guests Manal al-Sharif, author and presenter of the Tech4evil podcast Josh Taylor, reporter at Guardian Australia
An electrified vehicle fleet will mean lower fuel tax revenues for governments and possibly greater traffic congestion as EVs are cheaper to run. Governments around the world are having to reassess how they charge for road use and one Australian state, Victoria, has introduced an EV tax based on distance traveled. In Economics Explored EP155, Marion Terrill from the Grattan Institute discusses what a rational road user charging system would look like. She also talks about Grattan's truck plan, which is designed to get high polluting old trucks out of major Australian cities. This episode's guest Marion Terrill is Transport and Cities Program Director at the Grattan Institute. Marion is a leading transport and cities expert with a long history in public policy. She has worked on tax policy for the federal Treasury, and led the design and development of the MyGov account. She has provided expert analysis and advice on labour market policy for the Federal Government, the Business Council of Australia, and at the Australian National University.Links relevant to the conversationMarion's bio: https://grattan.edu.au/expert/marion-terrill/Grattan Institute on Twitter: @GrattanInstMarion's Australian Financial Review article “Electric vehicles: Feds should pave way for gold standard road user charges” (pay-walled): https://www.afr.com/policy/tax-and-super/feds-should-pave-way-for-gold-standard-road-user-charges-20220822-p5bbssGrattan's 2019 report Right time, right place, right price: a practical plan for congestion charging in Sydney and Melbourne: https://grattan.edu.au/report/right-time-right-place-right-price/The Grattan truck plan: practical policies for cleaner freight: https://grattan.edu.au/report/grattan-truck-plan/Previous episodes featuring Marion:https://economics-explained.simplecast.com/episodes/megaprojects-with-marion-terrill-from-grattan-institutehttps://economics-explained.simplecast.com/episodes/unfreezing-discount-rates-with-marion-terrill-of-the-grattan-instituteCreditsThanks to Josh Crotts for mixing the episode and to the show's sponsor, Gene's consultancy business www.adepteconomics.com.au. It's the day the world — and especially tourism operators and airlines around Australia — have been waiting almost two years for.‘Fortress Australia' has finally reopened international borders from Monday to vaccinated tourists without quarantine requirements for the first time since 9pm on Friday March 20, 2020.While the federal government has gradually reopened to select visa holders, international students and backpackers over the past six months — from Monday February 21 — international tourists, business travellers, family and friends will be welcomed back to Australia once again without needing to spend time in a quarantine facility upon arrival.Australians and foreign tourists will not need a booster to enter Australia. Travellers, however, will still be required to have had two doses of an approved Covid-19 vaccine.According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Sydney International Airport will have 27 overseas flights land on the first day of opening – including five from Singapore, four from Los Angeles and two each from Auckland, Vancouver and Tokyo. The border reopening comes just days after Western Australia's premier Mark McGowan announced the state's hard border will come down on March 3, acknowledging that sealing off the state has become “ineffective” in the face of a surging local outbreak. The state's reopening will happen nearly 700 days after WA first sealed itself off from other states in April 2020.Aussies hoping to get overseas and back without having to quarantine will be required to have an International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate from the MyGov portal. The only restraint on vaccinated arrivals into Australia on February 21 will be that states will require international travellers who are fully vaccinated to take a Covid-19 test (PCR or RAT) within 24 hours of arriving at their accommodation, which they must not travel to via public transport. The holiday-maker must isolate at their own accommodation until receiving a negative test, and asked to stay away from high-risk settings for a further seven days.New South Wales and Victoria, who have introduced a range of easements to Covid-19 restrictions, will still demand unvaccinated travellers quarantine in an accredited hotel, but the time period has been reduced for 14 days to seven. With tourism was one of the fastest growing sectors in Australia's economy prior to the pandemic, experts believe the restart of international arrivals will be slower than expected.Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Australian Airports Association chief executive James Goodwin the bounce-back won't “look anywhere near pre-pandemic levels” for some time.“We can expect over the coming weeks numbers will ramp up as confidence grows”, Mr Goodwin said.“We would hope to see at least a doubling of passenger numbers in the next six months, so it is important Australia is seen as a holiday destination again.”- news.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
All we can say about today's episode is... We hope you like goats as much as we do. Because there's a lot of chat about goats, even though we did not once plan to ever talk about goats on this podcast. We did however plan to talk about Grandpa Harley's MyGov experience, which also went off the rails and turned into a rant. We also planned to talk about Nikki's self destructing weekend, which somehow ended up back on the topic of goats. I think the main takeaway here is that we love goats and please get in contact with us via Instagram if you can give us a goat. To do this, we're going to look into your typical Balanced style fund, asset based portfolios (e.g. Aussie shares only), ethical choices and the DIY options available to you. You actually have a choice when it comes to your Super, and most large Super funds provide a range of different portfolios to choose from. No one size fits all - but hopefully this breakdown helps you ask better questions and find the right information.
