On December 28th, 1956, on the south side of Chicago, 12-year-old Patricia Grimes and her 15-year-old sister Barbara Grimes left their home to go to the Brighton theater to watch Elvis Presley's movie Love Me Tender for the 11th time. The sisters were seen at the theater by classmates and then seemingly vanished. Despite being the subjects of one of the largest, most expensive, and most labor-intensive manhunts in Cook County history, and even with a personal plea from Elvis Presley himself, they were never seen alive again. Two sisters named 15 year old Barbara and 12 year old Patricia Grimes disappeared after watching a movie at the Brighton Park Movie Theater in Chicago on December 28, 1956. Less than a mont later their nude bodies were found on the side of the highway, covered in snow. There were no fatal wounds to either sister, which baffles investigators to this day. It was a chilly December night in 1956 when young Barbara and Patricia Grimes, dedicated fans of Elvis Presley, set out to watch "Love Me Tender" for the eleventh time. Their disappearance sparked a desperate search, fueled by countless sightings and reports. Yet, despite the intense media frenzy and police efforts, the case was riddled by confusion, misinformation, and potential corruption that have obscured the truth for decades. In this episode, we discuss the web of possible suspects, including the enigmatic figure of Benny Bedwell, the rumors of sex trafficking rings, and the disturbing confessions that only added layers to this mystery. Author and historian Troy Taylor is my guest, and he offers his insights from his book "The Two Lost Girls: The Mystery of the Grimes Sisters".
Life in America in the 1950s often conjures up images of an idyllic suburban life. Fueled by unprecedented economic growth after the lean and stressful years of World War II, Americans enjoyed the stability and prosperity that they craved. The innocent and wholesome portrayal of the nuclear family was often depicted in programs like Father Knows Best and Leave it to Beaver as one where every problem could be solved with a good ol' heart-to-heart talk and a slice of apple pie. But look closer, and there are cracks in that façade. The polio epidemic terrified families of the early 1950s, the Cold War raged, and there was little room for divergent views in what had become a homogeneous society. And crime? It existed, even if television shows tried to pretend that it didn't. Elvis Presley rocked America socially and literally with his huge hit Heartbreak Hotel in January 1956. Less than a year later, Presley would have a legion of fans and a new movie called Love Me Tender. And it was on a freezing cold night in December of 1956 when two teenage sisters, Barbara and Patricia Grimes, disappeared off South Archer Avenue in Chicago after having seen Love Me Tender for the twelfth time at the Brighton Park Theatre. Their disappearance and subsequent story would be hailed as the crime that stole Chicago's innocence. It just shone a light on the less than Leave-it-to-Beaver reality.Research and writing by Lauretta AllenListener Discretion by OctoberpodVHS & OctoberpodAMProducer Music & Editing by Nico at We Talk of DreaSources:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoLOjBEarKY&ab_channel=WGNNewshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mhaptd2v5bw&ab_channel=WGNNewshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_the_Grimes_sistershttps://gizmodo.com/the-hideous-chicago-triple-child-murder-that-was-finall-1728039519https://www.newspapers.com/image/372809377/?terms=%22Barbara%20Grimes%22%20&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/372809377/?terms=%22Barbara%20Grimes%22%20&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/371134987/https://www.newspapers.com/image/372098382/?terms=Barbara%20Patricia%20Grimes&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/371481073/https://www.newspapers.com/image/371506269/?terms=Barbara%20Patricia%20Grimes&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/372089264/?terms=Barbara%20Patricia%20Grimes&match=1 (funeral details)https://www.newspapers.com/image/371489418/https://www.newspapers.com/image/371506299/?terms=Barbara%20Patricia%20Grimes&match=1 (Bedwell's confession details)https://www.newspapers.com/image/371686309/?terms=Barbara%20Patricia%20Grimes&match=1 (4 Quizzed in Grimes Case)https://www.newspapers.com/image/371483321/?terms=%22Barbara%20Grimes%22%20&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/371483354/?terms=%22Barbara%20Grimes%22%20 (Detailed breakdown of "sightings")https://www.newspapers.com/image/372095078/?terms=%22Barbara%20Grimes%22%20&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/371314373/?terms=%22Barbara%20Grimes%22%20&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/372098303/ (details of the girls last day)https://www.newspapers.com/image/372573261/https://www.newspapers.com/image/372573297/?terms=%22Barbara%20Grimes%22%20&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/371102964/?terms=%22Barbara%20Grimes%22%20&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/370612530/?terms=%22Barbara%20Grimes%22%20&match=1 (clothing)https://www.newspapers.com/image/370647278/?terms=%22Barbara%20Grimes%22%20&match=1 (classmate IDs Bennie)https://www.newspapers.com/image/370615583/?terms=%22Barbara%20Grimes%22%20&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/371130799/ (13 Questions)https://www.newspapers.com/image/372600722/?terms=%22Barbara%20Grimes%22%20&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/372185966/?terms=%22Barbara%20Grimes%22%20&match=1https://thehauntedlibrarian.com/tag/edward-bennie-bedwell/https://www.aetv.com/real-crime/murders-of-barbara-and-patricia-grimeshttps://static1.squarespace.com/static/5f975edb6e81564dce78f544/t/61f14af66fb7342a62c01bd1/1643203320769/Teen-Cleared.pdfhttps://chicagoreader.com/news-politics/death-and-the-maidens/https://www.newspapers.com/image/372217973/?terms=%22Barbara%20Grimes%22%20&match=1https://theoremfact.wordpress.com/2017/05/31/the-grimes-sisters/https://www.newspapers.com/image/372755194/?terms=%22Barbara%20Grimes%22%20&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/372755194/?terms=%22Barbara%20Grimes%22%20&match=1 ("crossed on both her feet")https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/5501564/barbara-jeanne-grimeshttps://www.americanhauntingsink.com/bonnie-leigh-scotthttps://www.newspapers.com/image/372577214/?terms=Charles%20Leroy%20Melquist&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/111564966/?terms=max%20fleig%20chicago&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/643903658/?terms=max%20fleig%20chicago&match=1https://wgntv.com/news/wgn-films/the-grimes-sisters-murders/will-detectives-discovery-help-solve-grimes-murders/https://wgntv.com/news/wgn-films/the-grimes-sisters-murders/did-investigators-overlook-a-crucial-lead-in-girls-murders/https://wgntv.com/news/wgn-films/the-grimes-sisters-murders/sisters-killings-blamed-for-chicagos-loss-of-innocence/This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3647242/advertisement

15 year old Barbara and 12 year old Patricia Grimes were sisters in the 1950’s. They, like most teenage girls at the time, were in love with Elvis Presley. On December 28th, after seeing “Love Me Tender” for the 11th time, Barbara and Patricia vanished into the frigid Chicago night, never to been seen alive again. 60 years later, this case remains as cold as the night they disappeared. For this episode, I spoke to Ray Johnson, a retired detective who has spent many years trying to solve the murders of sisters Barbara and Patricia Grimes. On December 28, 1956, the sisters had pooled together a couple of dollars and planned on attending an Elvis movie titled“Love me Tender” showing at the Brighton Theater in Chicago, Illinois. The sisters left around 7:30 p.m. and never returned home.On January 22, 1957, a man named Leonard Prescott was driving to a local grocery store. Along the way, he passed what he thought were two mannequins laying in the snow. He went home to get his wife. The couple returned to the scene and located the deceased bodies of Barbara and Patricia Grimes. The girls were nude and frozen from the cold. Over six decades have passed since the Grimes sisters were killed. The case still remains open.*** The video clip was from CBS Channel 2 news (Chicago affiliate) www.CBSChicago.comIf you know anything about this case, please contact the Cook County Sheriff’s office at 847-635-1188. Guess who's finally back?!? This week, Kristin tells Devonna the story of Barbara and Patricia Grimes.
*APOLOGIES FOR THE MUFFLED AUDIO IN THIS EPISODE* Sisters Barbara and Patricia Grimes, age 15 and 12 respectively, were described as being inseparable. Like many other teenage girls in their day, they were huge Elvis Presley fans, and on the evening of December 28, 1956, the 2 girls left their home for a trip to the movie theater to see Elvis's movie "Love Me Tender". They promised their mother that they would be back home by midnight, but they would never return home. Their disappearance would launch one of the largest missing persons cases ever investigated in Chicago's history. News of their disappearance spread wide, and even made it to Elvis Presley himself, who personally made a plea for the 2 girls to return home. They wouldn't be found until nearly a month later, on January 22, 1957, when their nude bodies were found along a deserted road. Authorities initially determined that they had died on the night of their disappearance, but many witnesses would come forward to say that they had seen the sisters in the days that followed them vanishing. What happened to Barbara and Patricia Grimes? We're they really alive in the days following their disappearance? If so, who were the men they had supposedly been seen with? It's been six decades since the sisters were murdered, and this case remains unsolved. Big thank you to my good friend, Myles from the “Forensic Myles” podcast for joining me for this episode! Barbara and Patricia Grimes were two sisters that went missing in 1956 after seeing Elvis' first movie in theaters. Their disappearance would turn into one of the largest investigations in the history of Chicago, with thousands of people being interviewed. While many believed that the two sisters ran away together, their mother, Loretta, knew that her daughters would never do that. After a few weeks of searching for the girls, Elvis himself got involved in the case by releasing statements to the media. It wouldn't take long for this missing persons case to turn into a bizarre murder investigation full of multiple confessions, ransom notes, taunting phone calls, and police corruption. Episode 91: The Grimes Sisters – Murder in Chicago! Noelle walks us through Chicago’s notorious murder of the Grimes Sisters. 1. In December 1956, teen sisters Barbara and Patricia Grimes disappeared. (This is known as the “End of Innocence” in Chicago.) 2. The sisters went to a screening of the Elvis Presley film “Love Me Tender.” (It was the 11th time they’d seen the movie!) 3. Their disappearance launched one of the largest missing persons cases in the history of Chicago. (300,000 people were interrogated!) 4. The bodies were discovered on January 22, 1957. (The construction worker who found them thought they were mannequins.) 5. Autopsy ruled that death was caused by shock and exposure. (Do the ghosts of the sisters still roam Chicago?) Sweet Dreams. XoxoZzzzzz.
Hamilton fans, rejoice! Em covers the Morris-Jumel Mansion, which, aside from influencing the hit broadway musical that neither of us have seen, also includes several ghosts, such as a girl who barks in the walls, a soldier who climbs out of paintings, and a shadow that pinches and growls at you. Meanwhile, Christine discusses the disappearance and murder of Barbara and Patricia Grimes, a case that is still open to this day, despite the interrogation of a steamfitter, whatever that is, and a drunken psychic.
