Dr. Angela Miller of mediationnikan.com in conversation with Natalia and Mac of olowskapierre.com discuss the necessity of bringing mediation skills to schools to educate children as young as 13 years of age till they are adults (8 grade till 12 grade). The time of adolescence is crucial when learning to resolve conflicts in an amicable manner as these are the moments when the children are appreciating of their peers' views more than those of the adults, like teachers and parents. Teaching mediation skills to the youngsters not only enables them to solve the conflicts by themselves but also equips them with the skills they will take outside of the classroom - like active listening, avoiding prejudice and understanding and accepting differences. It also produces the effect of calming down stressful situations in the school territory and outside of it in any peer groups leading to better anger management and improving social skills. Angela shows how this should be the mediator's initiative as part of their community service and how it will benefit long term the individuals themselves and their environment: families, communities, workplaces.

Christopher Le Breton. On NZ's Peace Foundation taking Peace to all schools locally, then globally?

GreenplanetFM Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2016 60:01

Can an upsurge in world peace be gained by The Peace Foundation in schools in NZ & around the world? I just interviewed Christopher Le Breton who as the co-manager of The Peace Foundation, I wanted to know if peace is actually possible, especially with the background din of horror, pain and loss in so many countries and expanding. What he told me below shows that a small country like Nuclear Free New Zealand could be pivotal in world events.   This may be one of NZ’s greatest social and mindful exports of the 21st century. That Nuclear Free NZ could again become the moral compass for a planet of peace and a totally new paradigm. “The Peace Foundation” was established in Auckland NZ 1975, with the vision of building peaceful local, national and global communities. That in 1987, it helped bring about ‘Nuclear Free New Zealand’ in partnership with citizen groups around NZ all coming together. This awoke NZ and then the world woke up to NZ. That in 2008, it managed to initiate a ‘chair’ of Peace Studies at Otago University in Dunedin. As a result it has become a leading centre of Peace studies in the World. On the 8th of June 2012 was a main player in inaugurating Auckland as a ‘World Peace City.’ And over the last 20 years has been facilitating and teaching children in schools about ‘peer mediation’ and  ‘conflict resolution’ in the ‘Cool Schools’ program. With children been taught how to mediate disputes for themselves. This interview covers many avenues as to how The Peace Foundation can teach skills and methods to bring about peace in the classroom, playing fields and community all the way to national and global situations. Showing too, that NZ could be a major global innovator to restore world peace, by embedding the Cool Schools program beyond the 2,000 schools that presently teach it to the rest of NZ’s schools and then exporting it with fully trained ‘ NZ Emissaries and Ambassadors’ to visit other countries, live alongside them and show them these easy to learn skills of peer mediation. This may be one of NZ’s ‘ greatest social and mindful exports' of the 21st century. That Nuclear Free NZ could again become the moral compass for a planet of peace and a totally new paradigm. Once this simple method of understanding is laid out - so that both parties comprehend how the situation started - that when through a simple process is understood and cleared - they let out a collective aha. In that moment of Yes!  It changes - from what happened to what is possible - they end up high 5 - ing or fist bumps or shaking hands - hugs, -  then on their way. Where in our day in the 1950’s, 60s,& 70’ Chris (and myself) were never taught this at school, which fortunately, in the last 20 years has been introduced to over 2000 schools across NZ. Naturally, the enthusiasm is to have NZ become a world leader in Peace-Making - having it languaged from the 'top of the Government apparatus being imperative’ and also up from  the grassroots too. Bearing in mind we have to make peace with ourselves first. The interview covers indigenous wisdom - that comes from the Aotearoan Maori Kaitiakitanga meaning guardianship and protection. That Kaitiaki means we are all guardians - and that we draw on the best of indigenous wisdom that maori have known for centuries. At present, many countries are looking to NZ to find a ‘new model’ of how to live in community and as a country, because the current fragmenting neo-liberal economic system is not working. Two great Maori leaders, Te Whiti o Rongomai and his uncle Tohu of Parihaka who living on the seaward slopes of Mt Taranaki here in NZ are seen as a non-violent, peaceful model and way of living and being. That there is anecdotal evidence that they inspired both Gandhi, as well as Martin Luther King. So this is a very compelling story from the heart of NZ. That in the 1880’s government troops invaded and destroyed their pa and marae, (group living area) arresting hundreds of maori and destroying and dispersing the whole village.   From a standpoint of The Peace Foundation, of bringing goodwill and harmony to our daily lives, the importance of Peer Mediation in schools is a win win win situation for all concerned. The result being, there are less problems in classrooms and in the playground - teens get on better - warmer relationships, less family violence in the home that ends up later in life with fewer divorces - and a calmer more coherent neighbourhood. With the possibility now to teach Leadership through Peer Mediation stats show that classroom learning improves - with higher grades, classroom behaviour improves, plus more tolerance becomes evident as well. The Cool schools program is a superb NZ first and need encouragement at all levels of civil society. At present, The Peace Foundation has a CrowdSourcing campaign to take Peer Mediation into 160 NZ schools and then to the whole country. This would also include an understanding of Kaupapa Maori (a principle or policy) and then upon the success of this project take this overseas to other countries and spread not only to the world but bring about peace in all its inherent manifestations. That when New Zealanders ‘kiwis’ go for their OE (Overseas Experience) they be ‘Peace Ambassadors’ as they will be totally skilled and equipped to solve areas of dispute and ‘reconcile opposing points' of view. By doing this in such an honourable way, it will increase the knowing that what is being taught in NZ schools is a major gift and asset to peaceful coexistence especially in a world that is crying out for peace and goodwill. The fact that the NZ government used to have a Minister of Disarmament - that was initiated by the Labour Government, speaks volumes of the past, but in 2012, the present National Government axed this bold intuitive. However, it all comes back to the core of our being - that we need to live in harmony with our inner selves - as an extension of global family. That David Lange the NZ Labour Prime Minister in 1987 wanted a Nuclear Free planet, but could not export this ideal, because our food exports were left sitting on overseas docks, especially in France and not moving.  So to keep our farmers financial, our PM had to rescind the desire to export this noble ideal. NZ was blackmailed! One big question for the MSM - Main Stream Media - why do they relegate ‘Peace & Love’ as being basically ‘dirty’ or even obscene words when in fact they most probably are the highest words in the human lexicon? This is a very passionate interview with high ideals, that will inspire those who want to be the change in the world we want to see. http://www.peace.net.nz http://www.peace.net.nz/content/peace-foundation’s-crowdfunding-initiative

Family Confidential: Secrets of Successful Parenting with Annie Fox, M.Ed.

Back in the day, students only met with school counselors to discuss test scores and schedule classes. With today's students' increasing social and emotional needs, counselors play an essential role in helping teens navigate life. Yet some parents might be uncomfortable with what their kids discuss in "confidentiality" with a school counselor. High School counselor Kevin Kuczynski acknowledges that "confidentiality is something that very important with teens," however he also says that "I try really hard to keep the lines of communication open with parents, so that anything that is even a remote concern, I will encourage (kids) to talk to their parents about it." Annie talks with Kevin about what goes on behind the counselor's door and how parents and counselors can become partners in helping tweens and teens. Christina Barruel, New Zealand Cool Schools National Manager & Trainer, Donna Hourigan-Johnston  of Mt Roskill Grammar (a peer mediation coordinator) and Del McFarlane-Scott of Ranui Primary (Cool School peer mediation program co ordinator). In the early 1990s, Yvonne Duncan in association with the NZ Peace Foundation embarked on a innovative World First, to introduce to every school in NZ a skills based method to teach children how to resolve conflict and reconcile differing points of view, be it in the class room, or playground. With this unique system been introduced to over 2,000 schools throughout the country since its inception, this could be a global game changer, albeit over a number of generations. Building upon relationships towards a Win Win World.Could New Zealand become a 'world leader' in conflict resolution… and have hundreds if not thousands of trained emissaries skilled in the art of peaceful resolution of conflicts?  These professional peacemakers would get invited to live alongside other peoples, within their cultures, and model in novel, innovative ways, goodwill and peaceful processes in action. What has come out of this unique program is:Students are the agents of change if you give them responsibility - their innate genius and creativity comes up with new ideas, (reflected from up to 70 different cultures that can be present in many of NZ's urban schools) as well students voluntarily taking on the mantle as ambassadors of social justice, being positive role models and standing up against bullying and harassment. Some schools have a very high percentage of students who are trained as peer mediators and they are everywhere within the school grounds. Within these schools this has become a very popular 'service' and with a lot of mana attached to it. At Mt Roskill Grammar, around 250 students apply every year to be trained as it empowers them with a large array of life skills to assist them in negotiating existence, which in the eyes of the trainers is a brilliant service to offer any human being.Virtually all young people, have at heart the ideal of hope, that things will eventually change and that keeping hope alive will ultimately evolve positive change - plus the sense of belonging (team spirit) for the common vision, inspires us all to involve ourselves.  This knowledge empowers students to take responsibility to make schools a safer, and more peaceful place - where social justice becomes part of the every day atmosphere resulting in good local and global citizens too.A 5 year old can even learn these skills and take them back to their family and whanau and show the larger family what they have learned at school and how to use these skills in a family setting - about listening and understanding and respecting each other.Data in schools that have 'this program' is clearly showing that bullying falls away in the play ground. This is important, and there is a need for a champion like the Prime Minister and Parliament to get in and language the benefits of Cool Schools across NZ as often as possible so as to evolve our country into being more 'conscious' as an 'aware society.'If many of those who are in prison had learnt these skills at school to resolve conflict, they would never have gone before the courts to end up in jail.Imagine being taught these skills 50 years or more ago, how many more boy friends and grill friends one would have, plus far less divorces and the emotional upset, and financial stress. Think about it ...This program also keeps students in school, as school become a safe place to be. Students can utilize their skills of being a mediator in a holistic framework to negotiate agreements on a daily basis, wherever they are, which assists them to grow and learn.  Resulting in the preparation of a citizen for the world. Someone who can also cope with change in a fast changing globalized reality. It's prepping children for the future. And the gift of teaching conflict resolution is that when the teachers of the Cools Schools program meet their students many years later in the outer world the students inevitably come up to them and thank them dearly, for teaching them these skills, as it has helped them across the board to resolve so many challenges that have come their way, like studies, job, family, relationships etc.  A major Win / Win, for both teacher and student and all other 3rd parties.I urge you to listen to this radio show as it will give your heart a chance to catch up on itself.   You can feel the excitement of this studio gathering that it is actually palatable where the vibe carries forward such an optimistic view of how things can be.peace,    respect in diversity,   paying it forward,   goodwill in action, random acts of kindness,   planting seeds,   developing empathy, building self esteem,    warm hearted citizens,    character building, communitywww.peace.net.nz

Does your child come home upset, with hurt feelings and or just down-right angry because they are feeling powerless to fix a difficult situation? Then, why not use peer mediation? In our Back to School series, Got School Conflict? Kids Mediate! young people need to understand that conflict is a natural human state better approached with skills than avoidance or violence. They need to know there is a better or different way to deal with their anger about the conflict. Peer mediation gives them the competence, courage and skills which empower them to deal with difficult situations so that they can realize how to better fulfill their needs and interests. In this pre-recorded show, we have a number of very special guests.
