What happens when a reclusive CIO hits a personal and professional crossroads? For Andrew Brummer, it was the catalyst for an extraordinary transformation—one that turned desperation into connection and a failing job search into a vibrant network of 12,000+ relationships based on a common purpose. In this deeply human and inspiring episode, Lisa McGuire sits down with Andrew to explore his journey from operating in the shadows to leading with authenticity, compassion, and clarity.  Andrew opens up about the humbling lessons learned on LinkedIn, the radical power of giving without expectation, and why the key to leadership in today's world is vulnerability—not visibility. Andrew's story is more than a personal reinvention—it's a masterclass in how to lead magnanimously. Whether you're stuck in your own career pivot or wondering how to show up more powerfully online, this conversation will reframe everything you thought you knew about connection, networking, and leadership. KEY TAKEAWAYS Stop trying to impress—start trying to connect. Vulnerability is not a weakness, it's your strongest leadership tool. LinkedIn isn't just a platform; it's your 24/7 global conference. The energy you show up with determines who shows up for you. Giving freely—without expectations—can transform your life and business. It's okay if not everyone responds; serve those who do. Your success is measured by how you impact others. Authentic networking is sustained by curiosity and compassion. Face-to-face (even virtual) conversations create deeper business momentum. Your personal brand is built in the daily moments of showing up as yourself. In this powerful episode of the Equipping ELLs podcast, host Beth Vaucher sits down with two leading voices in trauma-informed and restorative education, Marg Thorsborne and Joe Brummer, for a deeply transformative conversation on rethinking student behavior, discipline, and classroom culture. Marg, a global pioneer in restorative practices, and Joe, a trauma survivor turned international peacebuilder, bring decades of lived experience and professional wisdom to the table. Together, they co-authored Becoming a Trauma-Informed Restorative Educator, a vital guide for educators ready to move beyond punitive systems and foster true healing and connection in schools. This episode explores the critical differences between behaviorism and trauma-informed approaches, debunking the myth that all behavior is a choice. Joe explains how trauma shapes students' nervous systems, causing many to enter classrooms in survival mode rather than learning mode. Marg highlights the importance of adult self-regulation, reminding us that students need at least one regulated brain in the room — and that starts with the educator. The discussion also dives into the invisible signs of trauma and the necessity of cultivating empathy through self-awareness. Educators are encouraged to start their journey by working on their own wellness, nervous system regulation, and childhood conditioning, especially as many default to the discipline patterns they experienced as children.Listeners will learn why restorative practices aren't a “soft” alternative but a structured, empathetic approach to accountability and healing. They'll also hear the heartbreaking but eye-opening story of how misread facial expressions can trigger violence in culturally diverse classrooms — and how trauma-informed strategies could prevent such outcomes.Whether you're teaching newcomers from war-torn countries or students experiencing daily chaos at home, this episode offers grounded, research-backed strategies to help every educator foster a safe, inclusive, and emotionally available learning environment. With actionable advice and heartfelt insight, this episode is a must-listen for teachers, administrators, and school counselors.

The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education

In this insightful episode of "The Counter Narrative Podcast," host Charles Williams sits down with Joe Brummer, an expert in trauma-informed practices. Together, they delve into the transformative world of restorative practices in educational settings, a movement gaining momentum across schools nationwide. Joe sheds light on a critical oversight in the current implementation of these practices; while they hold immense potential for fostering understanding and resolution, their effectiveness is frequently undercut by a lack of integration with trauma-informed approaches. Through a thought-provoking discussion, Joe emphasizes that for restorative justice to realize its full promise, it must be underpinned by a deep understanding of trauma and its impacts.

In this week's episode I'm chatting with Anne Brummer, a wildlife rescuer and CEO of the Save Me Trust. I first heard about her through Dr. Brian May, who you might know as the guitarist of the band Queen. Turns out he is also really interested in animal rights, so much so that in 2009 he joined forces with Anne to set up the Save Me Trust, a nonprofit organisation on a mission to give wild animals a voice.Anne has been rescuing wildlife for over 30 years and currently runs not only the Save Me Trust but also Harper Asprey Wildlife Rescue, an emergency wildlife hospital that works 24/7, 365 days a year. We spoke about the situation of wildlife in the UK and the main threats wild animals such as badgers, foxes, deer, birds and hedgehogs are facing - including habitat loss, lack of access to freshwater and hunting. She also shared a ton of practical advice on how you can help wildlife - from what to do if you find an injured animal, to what you can put in place to support your local wild animals, whether you have a garden or not. I live in a flat in Central London so don't have a green space of my own that I can turn into a little wildlife haven which breaks my heart - but I will be putting some of her other tips into action, and also having conversations with people around me who do have gardens - including my Dad who I'll definitely try to convince to make our garden back home more wildlife friendly!Want to dive deeper?Donate to the Save Me Trust - https://savemetrust.co.uk/Take action with the Save Me Trust - https://savemetrust.co.uk/take-action/What 3 Words app Anne mentioned - https://what3words.com/Little linksAnne on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/anneatsaveme/Harper Asprey Wildlife Rescue on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/harperaspreywildliferescue/Why We Care on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/whywecarepodcast/Tiphaine on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/tiphainemarie_/If you enjoyed the episode and want to help the podcast, I would be super grateful if you could leave a little review or share it with a friend who might like it.Thank you for caring and sending you lots of love!
