Can't Save Yourself. Today, Pastor Michael is continuing last week's theme on salvation, and we continue with our previous week's essential list: Everyone needs to be saved. You cannot save yourself. God sent the one and only savior, Jesus Christ, to save us. Pastor Michael picks up the story about 15 years after the Resurrection. Paul and Silas set out on a mission to start new communities of believers. Jerusalem and Antioch were two of the leading Christian areas at the time. During this trip, they enlisted Timothy as part of their troupe, and Luke may have also joined them. So they headed west to Troas, and Paul had a vision, a waking one. In this vision, he sees a man calling him from across the water, asking them to come to Macedonia to help them. So, the gang headed out, from Troas to Neopolis to Philipi, in Macedonia. Paul was preaching there when Lydia approached them and offered them shelter in her home. Soon after they stayed with Lydia, they were out preaching again, and a slave approached them, having an ability to predict the future and screaming, “These are servants of the highest God!” That sounds good because it was correct, but it was an evil spirit that gave her the ability to predict the future and shout what she did. But she followed them for days, continuing to shout this out. Finally, Paul turned around and commanded the evil spirit to come out of the girl. The spirit immediately left her, and she was fine! Now, at this point, everyone is happy except the men who enslaved the girl to make money with her talents. They dragged Paul and Silas back into the city, in the middle of a marketplace, and stirred up an angry mob. Paul and Silas are dragged to prison after suffering a good smackdown, courtesy of the crowd. They prayed and sang praises to God in prison, and other prisoners and the jailer are listening. Then, an earthquake shook pretty much everything, and the jailer panicked. He understood that everyone would get away, and under Roman law, if a prisoner escaped, the guard could get the prisoner's sentence. So he was pretty freaked out! He draws his sword and places it against his chest to kill himself, and a shout tells him to STOP. It's Paul. Paul told him “Believe in Jesus, and you will be saved.” Roman guard, Jesus's love. The perfect example of how salvation works. (CSB Bible Notes) 16:28 We are not told how Paul knew what the jailer was about to do. There may have been just enough light, Paul may have had prophetic insight, or he may have heard enough to surmise what was about to happen. 16:29-30 The jailer fell down trembling because he realized the earthquake was supernatural. This prompted him to ask the most important question in the book of Acts: What must I do to be saved? He was spared from death in the quake, spared from suicide by the discovery that the prisoners had not fled, and now wanted to be spared from God's future judgment. Paul shares words of wisdom in chapter 3 of his letter to Philipi. He urges the church to be weary of those who insist the work of Jesus is incomplete and the old covenant must be maintained. He urges us to truly know Jesus and exactly what it means to be alone in Jesus.
Pastor Bryan shares a lesson from Philippians 4. Dr. Chapell highlights the generosity of the church at Philipi. It is a reminder that our generosity not only helps others, but is meant to bring joy to our own lives. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/1286/29
There is no doubt Paul and his companions impacted more people in Philipi than the ones we're told about here, so why these two? These two represent both ends of the human spectrum. Rich. Poor. Sick. Healthy....Everyone needs Jesus!

Philippians 2:19-30 New King James Version Timothy Commended 19 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, that I also may be encouraged when I know your [a]state. 20 For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state. 21 For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus. 22 But you know his proven character, that as a son with his father he served with me in the gospel. 23 Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see how it goes with me. 24 But I trust in the Lord that I myself shall also come shortly. 25 Yet I considered it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, and fellow soldier, but your messenger and the one who ministered to my need; 26 since he was longing for you all, and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick. 27 For indeed he was sick almost unto death; but God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. 28 Therefore I sent him the more eagerly, that when you see him again you may rejoice, and I may be less sorrowful. 29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness, and hold such men in esteem; 30 because for the work of Christ he came close to death, [b]not regarding his life, to supply what was lacking in your service toward me. A Mundane Travel Itinerary of 3 Ministers used by the Holy Spirit to further Illustrate TRUTH Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” In this short passage, Paul, Timothy, & Epaphroditus illustrate Men who had a servants Heart, though both different in personality Cultivating A Servants Heart Centered on Jesus Christ Vs. 19,24 Paul submitted all His ministry to the Lord Vs. 21,22 Timothy also, served the Lord , Not seeking His own interests…But helped Paul ‘In the Furtherance of the Gospel' (Phil. 1:12) Vs.25 Epaphroditus was also an example of servant leadership in pushing through sickness to minister to Paul's need MINISTERED (leitourgos) (Liter-goss) this word is translated both minister & service & we get our English word LITRGY from this word, which not only has to do with service but also.. adoration & veneration (See Romans 12:1)…To the Greeks in the secular sense it meant sacred service to ones community THREE Distinguishing attitudes of Servants Focused on Christ: They are willing to Go anywhere They are willing to Serve anyone ( see Philip Acts 8:5-8, 26-40) They are willing to sacrifice Anything Acts 20:24 But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my [b]race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of A Servants Heart Puts Others Ahead of Himself for the Sake of Christ Vs. 2:22 that as a son with his father he served with me in the gospel (Timothy)…Paul was willing to send His favorite son though he himself was in need Vs.30 (Of Epaphroditus)…. because for the work of Christ he came close to death, [b]not regarding his life, to supply what was lacking in your service toward me…..The Philippian church had sent their Minister to Paul Epaphroditus selflessly served Paul …. Paul calls Epaphroditus “ one who ministered to my need” , This man ministered to Paul's wants/ needs to the point of endangering his own life by coming to Paul's aid on behalf of the Philipi church… (vs. 30) not regarding his life….The Greek language coveys a reckless abandonment ., a gambling term meaning to throw all caution to the wind…So Epap. Showed NO concern for himself out of Love for Paul ( John15:13 Greater love has no man than this, than to lay down His life for his friends) Of Timothy…VS. 2O.. For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state. 21 For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus….Vs. 22) But you know his proven character

Philipians 4:7 says, “The peace of God which passes all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”You probably know it!Take a moment now to consider some of the most wonderful truths to be gleaned from these words of the Apostle Paul to the church in Philipi.
As Paul wraps up his letter to the church in Philipi he focuses their attention on Jesus. There will always be those who sin and chase the desires of flesh, there will always be arguments over seemingly everything but there is also always a reason to be joyful, you've just got to look for it. Sometimes it will only come with the promise of new life when Jesus returns. Sometimes you'll have to give in for the sake of moving on in Jesus. But you can always find a reason to rejoice in the Lord.

You can also listen to the reflection using the audio player below. Read Psalm 47 Listen to Psalm 47 Sometimes our worship can by quiet and reflective as we are still and wait for the Lord. This is not one of those times. Here the psalmist calls on the nations to clap their hands, to shout to God and to blast the trumpets. This is noisy, exuberant worship, as we sing our praises to God because of who he is and what he has done. The name of God used in this psalm, the Lord Most High (verse 2), describes God as God of the whole world, not just of Israel. The psalm celebrates God's kingship, that is his rule over all the earth. It looks forward to the future rule and reign of Jesus. We saw in Psalm 2 how Jesus was a radically different type of king when he preached about the Kingdom of God. One day all the nations will recognise that Jesus is King. Paul writing to the church at Philipi says, "that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth." Father God, we worship you because you are an awesome God and are worthy of our praise. Jesus, you are our King and we shout our praise to you.

In Philippians 4:5-7 the apostle Paul reminds the church of Philipi that while suffering is a normal part of the Christian life they had no cause to be overcome by the circumstance around them.
Paul brings a word of exhortation to the church at Philipi to consider their lives in the light of Christ and Salvation which he has purchased for us. We are to live with the mind of Christ, and serve with the humility of Christ. He encourages them to unity and not to murmur or argue but -hold forth the word of truth-. Now therefore work out your own salvation in the fear of the Lord.
The unity of the mind of Christ is important to our fellowship in the local church. Therefore is Jesus the greatest example of that unity we are to have as believers. Paul encourages the believers at Philipi to dwell in unity and the best way to achieve unity is to live out the life of Christ.
Matthew 16. Jesus takes the disciples to Caesarea Philippi, a temple to the fertility god Pan and a cross between a Red Light district and a frat party gone way wrong. Here at the corner of desperation and dissolution, Jesus asks us, Who do you say that I am?

Both Paul and Timothy greet the church in Philipi. The church in Philippi was founded by the apostle Paul on his second missionary journey, recorded in Acts 16:1-40. Paul went to Macedonia because of a night vision described in Acts 16:9. In it Paul saw a man of Macedonia standing and asking that he come over to help them.

Paul rejoices that the Gospel is being advanced or it is going forward.-The Gospel is making progress, even though Paul is in prison or in this case because Paul is in prison. Paul, in his letter, notes no issues with the Church in Philipi. Paul notes that he rejoices however the Gospel forward, wither through opposition or cooperation for Christ is preached.

An overview of the founding of the church at Philipi and Paul's letter to the Philippians.
God has a plan for our lives, in Jesus Christ. Our bond together, in Jesus Christ, is precious. Paul calls the believers in Philip, "my Joy and my crown." Paul poured himself out as a drink offering, but just like in the Old Testiment, if it weren't for the testimony of the people in Philipi, Paul's drink offering would have been of none effect. In Part 4 of A Study in Philippians, we discover what it looks like to labor and fellowship together in Christ.
