Banking is no longer competing with the branch down the street. It is competing with every digital experience your customers have before they ever open your app. Expectations around speed, simplicity, and trust are being set by big tech, fintechs, and embedded finance, not by traditional financial institutions. And for many banks, that gap is growing. That is why today's conversation matters. I am joined by Phil Tomlinson, Senior Vice President of Global Offerings at TaskUs, and Pragya Agarwal, Vice President of Financial Crimes and Risk Operations. They sit at the intersection of customer experience, advanced technology, and financial crime prevention, where speed and trust have to coexist every day. In this episode of Banking Transformed, we unpack what next-generation banking really looks like, where AI is delivering real value right now, and how banks can move faster, innovate responsibly, and still protect customers in an always-on, app-driven world. This episode of Banking Transformed is sponsored by TaskUs TaskUs is a leading provider of outsourced digital services and next-generation customer experience to the world's most innovative companies, helping its clients represent, protect and grow their brands. The role of human content moderation is a critical part of most trust and safety initiatives, which requires an understanding of inclusivity and how to approach digital wellness for your teams. TaskUs's Global Lead for Trust & Safety, Phil Tomlinson, talks about why we need a hyperlocal approach to moderation that includes experts in country-specific legal frameworks and cultural nuance. He also covers how digital well-being for human moderation teams can be optimized through both expert care, as well as through automation and technology.Growing up in South Africa during the dawn of the internet instilled in Phil the belief in making access to knowledge as free and as equitable to as many people as possible, and how to take both a global and regional approach to online safety.Be part of the movement that not only talks about but actively pursues online safety. Outsourcing can be an ominous-sounding word. So can technology — especially if these words come to be associated with people losing their jobs. “The Future of Jobs Report 2020,” by the World Economic Forum, suggested that by 2025, 85 million jobs could be shifted over to machines, but, in exchange, 97 million new jobs might be created. Even if more jobs enter the economy overall, a labor force change of that magnitude can be disconcerting. Navigating that changing landscape requires new ideas, new systems and new companies. Which brings us to another word that can be frightening — outsiders. If people are on the outside of a system, maybe they've been put there for a justifiable reason, right? As any underdog story will tell you, that assumption is far from reality. Bryce Maddock is the Co-Founder and CEO of TaskUs, an outsourcing company that has had a winding path from living on the outside of the tech and investment circles to having an international reach, more than 30,000 employees, and using an ideal blend of tech and humanity to serve customers around the world. Find out on Business X factors just how this company that started out as an underdog became successful and how its outside perspective offers hidden advantages.Main takeaways: A Slow Start Can Be a Blessing: When Bryce and Jasper got started, they were barely surviving. Unlike other start-ups, they didn't explode. They didn't have investors pouring money into their ventures left and right. In fact, they couldn't even afford to pay themselves a salary. But that was one thing that Bryce cites as a moment he wouldn't trade – it made them very disciplined. In an industry full of jets and champagne and extravagance, they learned restraint – a lesson they've kept even as they've grown. Even if you have the ability to spend a lot up front… it is wise to act as though you don't. Pretend you're broke, and you might avoid actually being broke. Narrow Your Scope: It might be counter-intuitive, but saying no can be just as powerful as saying yes. When you're just starting, it's easy to want to agree to take every job, no matter how big, small, or fringe. However, this strategy has a downside: it may stretch your resources too thin. It might take you into waters where your expertise can't shine the way you need it to when you're just starting out. Narrowing your scope means picking the projects you know you can deliver on. The ones that make it so that you can show the full extent of what your business has to offer. It might mean less capital up front, but having a strong portfolio and reputation will yield stronger returns in the long run. People First: It's easy to let business be all about the numbers. After all, a new venture can't succeed if the numbers don't make sense. But investing in people will never be a waste of time. Curating a culture that cares about its workers means that more people will want to work for you, and the ones that do will want to stay. ---Business X factors is produced by Mission.org and brought to you by Hyland. On this episode of the BragWorthy Culture podcast, Jordan talks with Dr. Miriah Steiger. Miriah is the Director of Global Research for Wellness and Resiliency at TaskUs. Her title happens to match up perfectly with the title of her dissertation, “Building A Resilient Workforce.” One of her passions and initiatives is to keep pushing the limits of research to improve employee care. She speaks on the response from her people after rolling out resilience programs and skill acquisition courses. She also touches on how COVID transitions disturbed aspects that people were once successful in, like social support. She mentions how her company tries to create “water cooler talk” virtually and how that looks for different people. She also discusses compassion fatigue, who is more susceptible to it and how people can maintain empathy for other people with everything going on in their own lives. Lastly, Miriah talks about how people can set their company and employees up for resiliency.
