Think like a photographer on assignment and discover new and different photo opportunities.
A few weeks ago I had an interesting experience that I knew I wanted to discuss on the podcast. I was working with a student who is starting a blogging business, and she wanted to improve here photography skills. She writes articles about health, well-being, and mindfulness and includes nature and landscape photos to visually enhance her content. We met in San Diego and talked some about her photography and the types of images she needs for her business. When we got out into the field, I noticed something interesting. My approach to the location changed. The photo opportunities I saw were different. Why? The images to be captured had a specific purpose to fulfill. It was like being on a photo assignment… and that's a creative exercise anyone can do.In studio news, a couple of things. First, I have the roster for 2023 photo workshops set and they are opening for registration. I have four physical, in-person photo workshops planned for next year:Death Valley, January 2023Big Sur, April 2023The Oregon Coast (2 workshops), November 2023The details are on my workshops page on scottdavenportphoto.com.Second, the podcast is moving. As I'm sure you know, costs are rising everywhere, and I've needed to look for ways to trim the expenses for my business. So I am consolidating The Stop Down Photography Podcast website into my main website, scottdavenportphoto.com. Rest assured all of the past content will move over and be maintained and the entire backlog of podcasts will continue to be available. I am in the midst of the migration and expect to complete it by the end of August 2022. I will announce on the podcast when that switchover takes place. This is The Digital Story Podcast #833, March 8, 2022. Today's theme is "Inside a Photo Assignment for Hire." I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue On Saturday morning I climbed in to the ID.4 and plugged the address for the Fire Department Training Center into CarPlay. Fifteen minutes later I was redirected to an overflow parking lot that required a hike back to the event. Undeterred, I grabbed by camera bag, a cap, and shades an headed to the day's assignment. What happened before this moment, and what transpired afterward is the topic of today's TDS Photography Podcast. I hope you enjoy the show.
Episode #03 Where, When, How do you listen to podcasts? A more in-depth interview with Dr. Ted Grant the Father of Canadian Photojournalism. The Photo Assignment Starting with this episode, I'd like to add a new feature: The Photo Assignment. These will just be suggestions for you to try ... or not, as you see fit. There is never any obligation. The photo assignment for this episode is: within a 100-meter radius, of your kitchen table, look for 10 interesting things to photograph. If you choose to participate, film or digital pictures are acceptable. And if you like, you can submit your BEST image to the Follow the Light Facebook page with your particular information. ©Bob St-Cyr 2021

#015: There are two tools that I use of the start of every project large or small, whether I'm working on a single short photo assignment or a multiyear photography project. As a freelancer with dozens of irons in the fire, I consider them absolutely vital for staying sane. The two tools are a scope of work and a work break down. This episode is Part One of a two-part series that walks you through how to utilize these in your own photography work. I know it might sound a little bit dry, but by the end of this episode you are going to be all about creating scope of works for your projects. Why? Because you'll see how a scope of work gives you clarity, keeps you motivated, and ultimately helps you be a smarter, more creative, and more effective conservation photographer. And you don't have to start from scratch! I'm handing you the same exact template I use at the beginning of any project, so that you can download it and get focused on your own project starting right now. Download my Scope of Work Template at JaymiH.com/15You'll LearnWhy a scope of work is such a powerful toolHow to complete each section of a scope of work, including: Premise: why your project existsGoals: what you want to accomplish through your projectDeliverables: what you create during your projectOut of scope: how you really define those boundaries around your projectTime frame: when you will accomplish your projectSuccess: how you know you did a great jobAnd how to repurpose one scope of work again and again for new projects, saving timeThis little bit of structure at the start of a project goes a long way. The focus that you put into shaping your project right from the very get go allows you the freedom to make informed decisions as the work progresses, so you can stay immersed in the fun, engaging part of turning your ideas into photographs. It transforms all that paralyzing chaos of a project into fodder for the creative process. It's powerful stuff, my friend!Read more at JaymiH.com/15Never miss an episode by signing up at JaymiH.com/ImpactAre you subscribed to the podcast? Photo Assignment #14 is on food photography and I'd like to share some of the viewer photographs! Special thanks to all the photographers that submitted work, it is outstanding. Music from Epidemic Sound: https://goo.gl/v5wWKr
Your topic for Photo Assignment #14 will be somewhat seasonably appropriate this time… we're talking about food photography. Photographing food is very similar to still life photography. There are a number of ways that you can communicate visually such as organic metaphor, concept, color, the unexpected - different approaches but all capable of interesting results. I took a photography history approach to the examples as we look at the work of Edward Weston, Wynn Bullock, Tom Baril, André Kertész, Josef Sudek, Irving Penn and of course - William Eggleston. The photography submitted this week is absolutely outstanding! Photo Assignment #13 was on Self Portraits and the work is extremely special. Photo Assignments are a weekly photography exercise in improving our work as photographers and expanding our creative thinking. I've linked up several playlists below if you'd like to get involved! Music from Epidemic Sound: https://goo.gl/v5wWKr
Photo Assignment #13 deals with self-portraits in photography. Looking back on the history of photography this phenomenon isn't just limited to people with iPhones. Successful portraits of any kind use elements of aesthetic and conceptual thinking to create works. Vivian Maier is probably the most known photographer embracing the medium but there were others as well: Cindy Sherman, Andy Warhol, Andreas Feininger, Richard Avedon and many others. Music from Epidemic Sound: https://goo.gl/v5wWKr
Photo Assignment #12 is on composite images. You guys did some amazing work this week!!! Photo Assignments are designed to expand our creative thinking in photography and our skills as photographers. You can participate as we do these every Monday. Music from Epidemic Sound: https://goo.gl/v5wWKr
Photo Assignment #12 is about working with composite images. Essentially this is a final image that is made up of multiple images. This is fairly wide open but could use double exposure, a collage of images, images within your photo, digital manipulation and compositing… there are mane options on this one. I want to encourage people to try some different things on this one so I am extending the deadline one more week. Photo Assignments are projects we work on every Monday. These photography based assignments are designed to expand our creative thinking and improve our skills as photographers.
Photo Assignment #12 is to make a composite photo. There are many ways to do this, one of which is digitally stitching photos in Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop. This is a great way to get beautiful, high resolution landscape images, but there are other ways to use this technique too which are a lot more basic. You can use polaroids, prints, have framelines, make perfect digital composites, whatever you think is the best technique to tell your story and be creative! In fact I encourage you to experiment. Music from Epidemic Sound: https://goo.gl/v5wWKr
This week our photo assignment dealt with the photography composition technique of subframing. Subframing is a way of using elements in the composition to frame up the subject – you end up with a picture within a picture. Outstanding work and congratulations to everyone who submitted photographs this week – there were literally thousands of images submitted. This is a selection of the best. Music from Epidemic Sound: https://goo.gl/v5wWKr
Here is your work from Photo Assignment #10 :: Negative and Positive Space in Photography Composition. Composition in photography involves understanding elements in the photo and relationships they have with one another. When used effectively, positive and negative space can bring emphasis to objects in your composition and create a much stronger photo in the end. Thanks to all who participated! The next Photo Assignment is to explore possibilities of positive and negative space. Positive and negative space are compositional elements that describe what’s important in a photograph or visual composition and what is supportive. Positive space is usually the subject of your photography – its where you want to draw the eye of the viewer. The space this takes up in the composition is referred to as Positive Space. Negative Space refers to things like the background and supportive elements. Negative Space has a role beyond just staying out of the way. You can create interest by carefully using this negative space to support the subject in your photograph’s composition.

Photo Assignment #4 was to work with shooting from high camera angles. This is probably the best work that has been submitted yet. I’m seeing some really serious improvement in the photos you all are taking! Thumbnail image by Richard Watson Music by Joey Pecoraro http://fanlink.to/tiredboy
Photo Assignment #3 was a study in eye-level composition. Eye-level is a pretty open ended concept, but I felt it was worth doing since we were doing low and high angle photography and all three deal with essentially how you would photograph using depth. It was really amazing to see the range of interpretation of the photos people submitted. If you’d like to see all of the submissions – use the hashtag #photoassignments on Twitter and Instagram or visit the Facebook page. Poster image by Michael Mottlau

Honestly I didn't think anyone would do the journal - its a lot of work but I was shocked at the number of people who did them! If you want to see more, Facebook and Twitter seemed to be the most popular for submitting. Photo Assignment #2 will explore variations on low-angle point-of-view photography. The subject matter is open to your own choice, but everything must be shot at ground level. Use the concepts we worked on in the first assignment. Use your journal, print your work, comment and remember to shoot variations.

I am considering adding the idea of regular photography assignments as part of the videos that I make here. This would give you the chance as a photographer to react to the ideas that we talk about on the show. But I need your feedback first – is this something you would find useful or fun to do? Let me know in the comments!
