Breathe Pictures Photography Podcast: Documentaries and Interviews

I'm joined on the show by the photojournalist Ted Soqui, regarded by his peers as a visual historian of modern American life. His career spans four decades, capturing pivotal moments like the 1992 LA riots and the city's relentless wildfires. His striking images have been featured in national and global media, telling raw, powerful stories. Ted will share the unique challenges and dangers of covering the 2025 LA fires, offering insight into life on the frontlines with a camera. From the mailbag and contributions to the show, Vicky Robb brings us a thought-provoking quote from a famous Mexican photographer, photojournalist Marissa Roth shares a powerful essay on the LA fires, and I consider how our senses shape the way we see and create. Tom Warburton whisks us away to India with a vibrant audio postcard, and Wesley Harney uncovers the beauty and storytelling potential in photos captured right on your doorstep. Plus, a reminder of Ted Forbes' one-word assignment, which is sparking some amazingly creative entries. Links to all guests and features will be on the showpage, my sincere thanks to MPB who sponsor this show and the Extra Milers without whom we wouldn't be walking each week. Today's conversation with photojournalist Claire Thomas takes a remarkable turn within just 20 minutes, shifting from casual beginnings to the profound realities of her work now. From those early travel ‘snaps' to capturing global crises, Claire's photography isn't just about documenting what she witnesses; it's about her genuine desire to share stories of resilience and hope. Working with clients like The New York Times, National Geographic, Amnesty International and UN agencies, her work is respected worldwide. Claire shows real humanity behind the lens and a commitment to her subjects that surpasses the act of photography alone. Also, on the show from the mailbag, Tim Bindner believes he's discovered his true creative WHY, Bob Shonkoff has insomnia but has turned it into a photographic opportunity, Lynn Fraser and David Higton are making proper pictures of proper snow, and Mark Krajnak is celebrating Hogmanay in a place far from Scottish shores. We'll also remind you of January's assignment set by the Art of Photography's Ted Forbes, plus there's some more information about April's ENCOUNTERS workshop and experience. Jack Lowe's Lifeboat Station Project is a profound photographic tribute to the courageous British lifeboat crews who risk everything to save lives at sea. Using a Victorian camera and wet plate collodion methods, Jack makes powerful portraits that honour the resilience and humanity of these everyday heroes and today, he is on the show to talk about his incredible undertaking and risk-taking. Jack's project has taken a toll, though, both emotionally and financially, and he discusses and reveals how that has affected him personally.  Also today from the mailbag, Randy Bullerwell is having a crisis of photographic direction, Mark Christensen finds pelicans have quite the attitude, Matthias Focks is making excellent pictures under an umbrella in a small German town, and Michael Mixon introduces us to a photographer who is questioning human connection. So, make sure to head over to their website and enter for a chance to win. All you need to do is share what nature means to you. But remember, the clock is ticking. Visit explore.omsystem.com/petapixel and enter before November 13th! When the M11-P launched as the first camera to support the Content Authenticity Initiative's (CAI) CP2A technology, a lot of questions immediately flooded in: what does it do? How does it work? Does it protect copyrights? Is it like cryptocurrency? The answer is actually surprisingly simple, but the CAI and the companies that have partnered with it have not done the best job of explaining how the technology will actually work for the average photographer and general photography consumer. In this week's podcast, the trio discusses how this system works, how it can be put into cameras, how people are intended to interact with it once the photos are out in the world, and the remaining roadblocks the CAI has to navigate to make the CP2A a standard the average person understands. Street Shots Photography Podcast

In this episode, Antonio and Ward discuss recent updates, with Antonio revealing that he recently came down with COVID. He also shares his newfound love for creating photo zines using Blurb. Ward speaks about his latest book purchase, "The Workers" by Lee Friedlander from Steidl Publishing. Intrigued by Ward's choice, Antonio decides to be a copycat and orders the same book, along with another one by Evelyn Hofer.  Ward plans to create a spontaneous and loose zine during a trip to visit his mother in Saskatchewan, capturing everything he encounters along the way. He also shares that he's been invited by a camera store in Calgary to give a talk about his process of creating a photo book, which came about after meeting with Ted Forbes and Evelyn Drake. Antonio and Ward then delve into the intriguing world of composition in photography. Antonio, as a photography instructor, talks about his desire to instill a deeper understanding of composition in his students. They discuss the difference in their own paths of learning, with Antonio having a formal education in photography and Ward learning through exploration. They emphasize the importance of composition as the linchpin for a captivating photograph. They stress the need to move beyond the "snapshot" approach and encourage budding photographers to take their time, observe, and envision the image they want to create. While acknowledging the value of rules like the rule of thirds, they emphasize that composition is a lifelong learning process that requires time and dedication. The discussion touches on the impact of Instagram and square format, but overall, they express the need to focus on composition to create impactful and resonant images.   Show Links: Help out the show by buying us a coffee! Promotional and other consideration provided by NVIDIA For more on blazing fast GPU check out https://nvda.ws/2VLmFAX GPU cards are an essential part off the graphic performance in your computer. In this video we’ll take a look at an external GPU or eGPU setup. I'm using a Dell XPS 15 9570 laptop, but you can use any laptop that supports Thunderbolt 3 and has a minimum of 16GB of RAM and an i5 processor (i7 8th generation recommended) - this could be somethign like the Razer Blade 15, Razer Blade Stealth or HP Spectre 13. You can also run an eGPU with a Macbook but using NVIDIA cards is going to require a lot of workarounds. This is an excellent way to speed up the performance of applications such as Lightroom, Premiere Pro and After Effects by adding an external GPU card. Also worth noting - as I am posting this video, NVIDIA has just announced as I’m releasing this video, NVIDIA has announced their new RTX Studio laptops. These new Laptops are designed for creative work and are boasting some serious specs. The new Studio drivers have been tested extensively with applications by Adobe, Epic, Autodesk, Unity and Blackmagic Design specifically with creative workflows in mind. #NVIDIAStudio Music is from Epidemic Sound https://goo.gl/v5wWKr AoP T-Shirts https://aop.threadless.com/ Need a website? http://squarespace.com/aop On my channel you will find videos about photography, cinematography, post processing tutorials for Capture One, Lightroom and Photoshop, photo assignments that YOU can participate in, the Artist Series and more. Check out my Preset Pack for Adobe Lightroom/Adobe ACR http://theartofphotography.tv/presets The heart of color grading comes down to understanding how light and color work in the highlight, midtone and shadow areas of a photograph. Of course this same idea can be applied to any software application that you are using for photography (Lightroom, Luminare, DX0, Capture One etc). • Understand how to sample colors and see toning in both shadow and highlight detail • find the midtones • match a color grade using a color balance adjustment layer • match a color grade using a curves adjustment layer Check out my other videos: Lightroom Presets :: Get Incredible Looking Images https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO6s6oRPR1A The Film Look With Levels Adjustments https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQiqOinqHV4 The One Secred Lightroom Feature Every Photographer Should Be Using https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7HBdMrR6Zo Canon EOS RP :: Why? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rg4C7Uipt9I Why You Should Be Using Lightroom Mobile https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNoNlJKcSNU Music is from Epidemic Sound https://goo.gl/v5wWKr AoP T-Shirts https://aop.threadless.com/ Need a website? http://squarespace.com/aop On my channel you will find videos about photography, cinematography, post processing tutorials for Capture One, Lightroom and Photoshop, photo assignments that YOU can participate in, the Artist Series and more. In this episode, I'm joined by my buddy Ward Rosin and we do a deep dive into the photographer Jacques-Henri Lartigue.  Ward and I touch on many aspects of Lartigue's work including his love of speed and his use of one of the first color photography processes called "Autochrome." We make some interesting discoveries during our chat and I'm sure you will too as you listen to us both talk about a photographer we've admired for a long time. This is the first of what will be a regular feature on Street Shots. The idea of talking about interesting and exceptional photographers with a buddy has been something I've wanted to do on the show for a while now. The ULTIMATE PORTRAIT LENS? :: Sony 135mm f/1.8 G Master

The Sony 135mm f/1.8 G Master lens is the 31st lens in Sony's full-frame, e-mount lineup. I quickly fell in love with this lens - it is outstanding. Designed for longer portraits, this has some of the best optical rendering that I've seen on any lens to date. This is the ultimate portrait lens. Bokeh is excellent, it has outstanding sharpness and the autofocus speeds are impressive. This has the same XD linear drive system that is found in the Sony 400mm f/2.8 G Master as well as the Sony 24mm f/1.4 G Master lenses. One correction - around 03:17 I say there's little spherical aberration at small apertures when in face I meant to say diffraction. This is where the sharpness softens in the lens and for most lenses this starts around f/16. Its been a long week - sorry for the confusion. Canon has just announced a new entry level, full frame mirrorless camera - the Canon EOS RP. The most interesting features on this new camera are the RP's small size and its price. Its the most affordable full frame mirrorless camera to be introduced in the last year. But this makes me wonder, what is the point of the Canon RP? It doesn't have any more features than the DSLR cameras that currently exists, so unless your requirements are an extremely small size, why would this be a camera of interest? This weekend I went to Marfa, TX to visit the Chinati Foundation. Of course, no photography allowed. I'm always the first to defend the right to photograph, but in this case I actually agree with the policy. Experiencing the works of art by Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, John Chamberlain, Robert Irwin and many others - it requires attention. These are experience and environmental works that can't be reproduced in a photograph anyway. This does make it difficult to share my experience in this video, but I can talk about these works which is probably more important anyway.
