Our GPs are people we rely on for a lot. A visit can be as simple as a 15 min appointment to establish if our sore throat is a viral or bacterial infection, but it is sometimes the start of a long and difficult pathway of diagnosis, treatment and hopefully recovery for any one of many illnesses and injuries that could befall us. They play a big role in our health journey, but do we really understand their role in our well-being? To get insight into how to get the most from your GP, this week Francesca and Louise are joined by Melbourne-based GP, Dr Preeya Alexander, for an in-depth chat. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode of "Let's Talk," our new host, Yvie Jones, speaks with Dr. Preeya Alexander about the vital role of General Practitioners (GPs) in supporting patients with body image issues and eating disorders. Dr Preeya shares her unique insights into how GPs can build trust with their patients, collaborate with specialists, and navigate the challenges of treating eating disorders with sensitivity and care. We learn how social media misinformation fueled Dr Preeya's passion for addressing body image issues and eating disorders and explore the impact of unconscious bias in patient care, plus how GPs can recognise early warning signs by understanding key risk factors and symptoms. Dr Preeya also offers practical advice for GPs on approaching patients who may have eating disorders by using compassionate and culturally sensitive language to build trust. The goal is commitment to their recovery. Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Butterfly National Helpline: 1800 33 4673 (1800 ED HOPE) Free, confidential support from specialist counsellors. With special guest: Dr Preeya Alexander… in conversation with Bill Kable Eat, Sleep, Play, Love sounds pretty good to all of us. But sometimes our very young children do not stick to the recipe and can distress both themselves and those caring for them. Today we go on a journey with our celebrity guest Dr Preeya Alexander who distils for us in her new book what we should be doing to have an easier life. We are happy to say that Preeya’s book does not start out with rigid rules on parenting accompanied by a prescription for lots of guilt if we do not follow precisely. Some parents get strong advice from their relatives, neighbours, influencers and even well-wishers but sometimes this amounts to what used to be called old wives’ tales. Preeya examines some of these familiar stories such as how you can expect a baby to cry when teething. Is that true? Preeya is a wonderful communicator as she demonstrates in her television appearances and in her surgery. People feel free to ask her questions on a wide range of topics knowing there will be no judgment. For us it is like we are sitting in the surgery as she provides her professional advice. Tantrums, sensitivites, trouble listening: many parents will wonder if their kids' behaviour is typical or a sign of autism or ADHD. Dr Preeya chats to developmental pediatrician and mother of three Dr Anisha Pillay about neurodivergence - what is it? What signs might prompt you to check in with a qualified health professional? And what does “seeing a GP or pediatrician” actually look like? Whilst Preeya and Anisha share plenty of practical titbits on this huge topic (with a focus on Autism Spectrum Disorder) they also provide a big dose of reassurance - there is no “normal”. As we get older, life, work, family and commitments take the lead on stage, and more often than not, we let our health sit backstage until we have a moment to tend to it, or fathom what's needing review and in-turn our medical strategy has been based around treatment when sick, rather than prioritising preventative testing and treatment. But when diving further into health, it's not as simple as presenting for some screening and hoping for normal results, we need to look at all the facets that contribute to the big picture. And that's where Dr. Preeya Alexander just gets it. Dr. Preeya, a practicing GP, Mother of 2, Author, TV Presenter and Co-Host on a network cooking show, has a huge online and media presence, because she believes and is passionate about all facets of health from preventative medicine, to nutrition, food morality, and the realities of parenthood, but what's most refreshing, as the cover of her new book “Eat, Sleep, Play, Love” says “non-judgemental” which is a refreshing take, and music to our ears.
