“The Grooming of the Good Girl” with Dr. Michelle McQuaid

Research shows that by the time a girl reaches age 11, she has built the belief system that you earn love by pleasing others. But as we know, a life built around that sentiment, is destined for poor mental health when your internal reward system is - put others happiness before your own, to please and ‘be a good girl’ in the eyes of the community around us. Dr. Michelle McQuaid spent years of her adult life ticking the boxes of what we are told will provide us fulfilment and happiness - a great career, good financial income, getting married and having children and once those boxes were ticked, life will set and fulfilling. But what happens when you tick those boxes, yet you find yourself ignoring your inner voice in the sacrifice to achieve them and side-line your mental well-being to keep it on track? Dr. McQuaid found herself exhausted, burnt out and deeply unhappy and it came to a point after her midlife, where it was time to stop and look at how did she get here, and why was she so conditioned to ignore her sense of self to achieve the ideals of others. So we sit down with Dr. McQuaid, an Honorary Fellow of the Centre for Wellbeing Science at Melbourne University, blogs for Psychology Today, and has been featured in Forbes, the Harvard Business Review, the Wall Street Journal and more to unpack what she has learned through research around the grooming of good girls and it’s impact as the good girl grows into a women. Neurodiversity is an umbrella term which refers to understanding the diversity of all human brains, and the way in which we interact with the world. Often the variation is within behavioural traits that diversifies us from each other, and thankfully society is coming to a place of realising that it’s not a deficit to be neurodivergent, simply difference between one person to another. That being said, it’s taken too long for us to get to this understanding, and we still have a way to go. Thankfully for women like Madonna King , an Award Winning Journalist who has previously covered many areas including education around teen girls and their emotional and physical development, and Rebecca Sparrow - acclaimed Writer, Columnist and Public Speaker who raises awareness and advocates for teen friendship education and teen emotional development, both came together and combined powers to bring information, resources and spotlight the widely prevalent yet still misunderstood conditions that fall within the umbrella term of Neurodiversity. Both leaders in this area who are driven with personal passion and have dedicated their careers in covering children and teens development, have collated and created the book titled “Out of the Box”, as a call to action but also a one stop guide, for those like Rebecca, who wished back when her own child was diagnosed with Autism, that this type of information was available to navigate the unknown and overwhelm of a new diagnosis. As we learn in this book, and through listening to Rebecca and Madonna, knowledge is power when it comes to truly understanding who you are and how you are built to function. Knowing and understanding, can make those that feel different to the neurotypical, feel less alone and in fact, help the neurodivergent use it as their superpower. Addiction - the word within itself carries a weight to it that feels scary and removed to the majority. But the reality of it is, and like we have heard before, addiction doesn’t discriminate. Fenella Scarlett McCall is one of the many examples, who from the outside looking in, you would never suspect she had struggled with addiction. Fenella was from a privileged loving family, private school educated, had successful career driven parents along with creative and successful older siblings, and if when talking superficially - she has a beauty that was matched with what was considered to be confidence and coolness that other girls growing up, dreamt of having. Her reality was very different from the outside perception that others had, and Fenella now speaks to the loneliness, lack of confidence and being unaware of her right to say no when it came to substance use and consensual sex, that she now realises all contributed to her spiral into addiction. The Fenella of today, has been through hell and back trying to piece herself together mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally with the purpose of understanding how her prior experiences and traumas impacted her and led her to make decisions that ultimately broke her and caused unbearable shame. Now, after years of support from mental health services along with studying to become a clinical psychologist, she has a greater capacity to understand and accept how she ended up in a negative vicious cycle of substance abuse. Fenella shares how some of the best healing and growth has come from hearing and identifying with others who like her, found ways to break the negative downward cycle and create positive lives filled with connection and joy. “Aiming for the Elimination of Violence against Women' with Professor Kate Fitz-Gibbon

1 in 4 Australian women has experienced emotional and/or financial abuse by a current or former partner since the age of 15, and 1 in 5 Australian women have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15. Violence against women is a terrifying reality that we often think doesn’t occur ‘in our backyard’, but sadly it is more prevalent than ever, all over Australia, and around the world. Often it gets thought of in terms of out-of-control arguments between couples, with statistically the male being the dominant perpetrator. But in the modern era, violence against women extends into family violence, emotional abuse and coercive control (including financial abuse) - disabling women from being able to leave, forcing victims to flee with nothing as finances have been manipulated and crippled, whilst air tags are being used as tracking devices, and devices themselves are hacked remotely and monitored for surveillance usually by their very own partners. The gut-wrenching reality of this took hold of Professor Kate Fitz-Gibbon’s life when living an idyllic youth in high school until her school friend’s dad killed his estranged wife, and after confessing to it, he successfully claimed provocation in court which saw him convicted of manslaughter rather than murder. Kate’s blissful beliefs about life crashed to a stark reality, and from then she became entrenched in the injustices that occur to women all too often, and an advocate for policy reform, prevention, early intervention and healing for those effected. So we ask Kate, what are signs we can look for with families who may be effected? What are steps friends or family can take to intervene before it's too late? And what does a world look like where intergenerational abuse heals and ceases its cycle, and how can we make that happen? In life, whether you believe yourself to be creative or not, we are built to express our individuality whether it’s on a small scale to a large. On a small scale for those who don’t see themselves as creative it could be your music, books or film selections or how you choose to expel your energy - sport, dancing, or writing in any form. But there is also the chance, that the realities of life have distracted you from even knowing what really means something to you, and if you are expressing yourself at all? Kerry Armstrong who is a renowned and established Australian Expressionist Artist is a prime example of someone that came to the realisation she wasn’t acknowledging for a long part of her life, her own expression and individuality that was deep within her. Whether it was the relationship that she was in, or the established financial successful career, or the business of raising a family, it was drowning out her own music that came from within, until it became prevalent the desperate need for change, and to start listening to her own needs that she had ignored for too long. So we ask, how does a woman in her 50’s breakdown the barriers that were stopping her from living authentically and rebuild the Kerry she is today. In the years of 2021 and 2022 Divorce rates in Australia spiked as high as they had been since 1976. The year in which The Family Law Act was reformed to include “No Fault”, meaning spouses could for the first time opt that they just no longer got along, and it was a mutual decision at “no fault”, in turn that year, the divorce rates spiked to the highest in history… until the pandemic. 2 years after the pandemic and lockdowns, it only feels now like the relationships that were pushed to the edge, have either finally regrouped from the pressure and trauma of the unknown, or reset as rebuilt individuals than prior couples. But the fallout of it all begs the question of, how can a marriage survive the modern world? The pressures that come with the pace in which our society now runs, the cost of living crisis, the unavoidable content that gets consciously or unconsciously shoved down our throats by social media algorithms, or the access to endless sexual fantasies online, that remove you far from your own reality, and set an unhealthy and unrealistic tone for intimacy and connection with a long term committed partner. So when you come across a couple that have somehow managed to navigate their way through from being high school sweethearts to parents of teens, that still remain healthy partners to each other, it's like finding a rare glistening gem in the jungle, and you wonder how did they get there and how are they still sparkling? Bec met Rachael Seymour, Co-Founder of The Energy Studio that focuses on well-being practices such as Kundalini Yoga, Meditation, Sexual Energy and so much more and her husband Andrew Seymour, a Senior Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist and Partner at Physica, and it was intriguing to see a couple who view life with difference lenses, Rachael focusing on spirituality and Andy following the science he practices, whom are still so connected and even more impressively, respecting of each others differing views.  So we ask how have they grown together over grown a part? You may have heard or seen headlines lately with the concern over the impacts of social media on children and Anthony Albanese's recent announcement about age regulation and policy reform for when children will be legally able to access certain social media apps. These are all steps in the right direction, but what do we do in the meantime? And really, in the wise words of Clinical Psychologist – Dr. Charlotte Keating - without trying to implement some foundational and fundamental skills to your child's life, and your families – who is to say when they do turn 16 they will be ready to handle the world of online and social media? Further to this, Developmental Paediatrician Dr. Billy Garvey concurred that we don't just give our children a car license and the keys and say – drive! We start children with their Learners Permit and sit with them whilst they learn to drive, before they earn their license and the right to drive alone. This week's episode was a special one to Not Super. No one ever really talks about how as a woman you go through puberty and then enter your reproductive stage, where if you have the ability to have a child, the physical and emotional changes go well beyond the first 6 weeks post birth. Most commonly in western medicine, we focus on the labour and then the first 6 weeks, but beyond that for the majority, women get left to resume motherhood with little acknowledgment of the biological, hormonal and physical changes that continue to occur to them for years after birthing children. Matrescence is somewhat of a new term that has recently been defined, similarly to adolescence as the physical, psychological and emotional transitions that occur to women for years once they become a mother. In the past the fatigue, the highs and lows, extreme periods, anxiety and so on, all were simmered down to the ripples effects of taking care of your young children. But with the dedicated work of people such as Dr. Oscar Serrallach and Frida Aalgars, it's becoming more commonly understood that far more is happening to you that needs attention and support in the bid to manage the Matrescence stage of life. Dr. Oscar Serrallach is a renowned Doctor that has been a leader in the area of Mothercare for 10 years, writing and publishing world renowned book “The Postnatal Depletion Cure” in a bid to guide women through this previously ignored stage. Frida Aalgars was an established corporate calving out an impressive career for herself but once having children suffered sleep deprivation and burnout, which led her to be a patient of Dr. Serrallach, and in-turn making wholesale changes to assist in living a more balanced and holistic life to manage being a woman who is also a mother, in this new era of parenting, navigating parenting and life, and everything in between. Since then, Frida and Oscar have collaborated in an attempt to combine their expertise and provide women a better chance to manage their well-being, with their wellness brand The Tenth Co. The key to all of this goes back to the essence of being a woman who is also a mother, you can't care for anyone from the place of an empty cup, so prioritising support and your health in today's world is the key to helping manage your wellbeing alongside motherhood. Though the question begs why this practice has existed for thousands of years and those committed to it, swear by its positive influence in their life. Kelly McCloskey was a renowned real estate agent within the Melbourne housing market for years and often found herself selling the same home, multiple times, to new owners. One thing that struck her, was the habitual cycles of these particular homes - repeated illnesses, divorces or declines in wealth where she started to question the philosophy and connection of good energy, bad energy and the impact of a homes Feng Shui. That's when Kelly leapt from Real Estate to undertaking years of study to learn the foundations of Feng Shui and merge her knowledge of real estate with understanding the energy and flow of a home. Our skin is the largest organ of the human body and what we apply to it is absorbed by that organ (our skin) and in-turn absorbed into our blood stream and internal organs.Somewhere along the line, marketing genius became the majority focus of our attention, and we have gotten distracted by what is the ‘in' product, what looks cool, what's chic and what smells nice, over what is actually good for our skin and in-turn us. Jess Armstrong came to this realisation through her own confronting and deeply personal journey.Jess was in the throes of early motherhood with two young children when she found out she had breast cancer. Through this incredibly distressing time, Jess had to undergo chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a mastectomy. But cancer didn't keep her down, Jess was driven to understand what was happening to her and her body and learn about that products that she had used for most of her teen and adult life. Through investing her focus in learning about this, Jess discovered that a lot of the beauty and skin care industry has gotten carried away with what looks and smells good over focusing on what is actually safe for good skin health and our overarching health, in turn the confronting realisation that majority product ranges were made up of ingredients that are actually toxic for us, especially those that are immuno compromised and in treatment. Now knowing all she has learned, Jess took this as a challenge to not only provide the market with a safe product range, but also a product range that still gives women the feminine feels of nurturing ourselves with something special and founded FUCA Skincare range. What has previously been a generally ignored stage in a woman's life is now coming more and more to the forefront - peri-menopause and menopause, thanks to the committed work of incredible Doctors like Dr. Fatima Khan AKA The Menopause Specialist. Dr. Khan not only has a profound understanding of the science, and medical cause and effect of menopause, but is also a woman that strongly advocates for this stage of a woman's life to be more widely understood by society and our community because the ripple effects go well beyond the symptoms. Statistics such as 1 in 10 women end up leaving their roles in the workforce because their symptoms from menopause become unmanageable, in-turn meaning the representation of women in senior management roles reduce, and the gap between men and women in leadership roles broadens. There are so many more examples of these ripples effects, and when 50% of the world population will experience this which equates to 1 Billion women in 2025, it's infuriating that it's not more acknowledged. But that being said, whilst Dr. Khan knows all the treatment options and supports women medically, it's her understanding of what's required in the holistic aspect that reminds us yet again, it's taking the time to hit pause - review how you are feeling but also how you are living, for you and in-turn for your health.   Rebecca Bull – Creator / Executive Producer / Co-Host Zoe Weir – Co-Creator / Co – Host Sophie Jackson – Producer  Social Media – Naughty Nancy Social Media Agency Website / Brand Design – Foster Creative Video Editor – Luke MorganSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Filled with magic, romance, travel, heart ache and ultimately the empowering story of a woman who had to find her identity again and rebuild her sense of self... although Anna decided to do that, on her own in Paris. At the tender age of 19, Anna went from her small hometown in Ohio to New York. Fell in love with a magician (who coincidentally was from the same town) and before she had the chance to grow into her own magic, she committed everything to the magician: putting aside her own dreams to become his full-time assistant and wife. As each year passed Anna followed her husband's career and ambitions, whilst trying to find outlets for her own, but quickly began to realize that she needed more from life and her marriage. As she fought to become more than just a plus one in her husband's life, Anna's husband left, and she was confronted with the devastation that she had completely lost sight of herself. Anna was forced to pick up the pieces of her life and review who she wanted to be going forward and what was it that made her happy. Writing and adventure led Anna to decide to start again in her favourite city – Paris, where she proceeded to not only write a New York Times Best Seller “Live Your Life,” and her memoir about rebuilding her life, “My Own Magic,” but also managed to create a life true to her dreams and her values. In today's day and age it feels like for women there is a fork in the road. You can either throw yourself in the career lane, or as time ticks and the pressure of starting a family grows you can wonder down the relationship and in-turn fertility road, which is always unknown and never a certain outcome. If you sit in the middle and cross between the two paths, it can often feel like you are never executing either path, well enough. Taryn Williams is now an established and renowned CEO and successful entrepreneur of multiple companies, who has firmly established her place on the career path through sheer grit and determination and gone from strength to strength. Taryn's journey started out by being scouted for modelling at the age of 15, to then opening her own modelling agency WINK models at the age of 21 and turning it into an industry juggernaut that is known for inclusivity, diversity and equality for their models. Her focus then moved to founding companies such as the right.fit connecting brands directly to creators, and The Influencers Agency, selling the latter two companies in 2023, only to throw her energy into her next venture #Gifted - a business model that tackles the world of branded gifting and influencers content. Taryn's conquests in business have provided her security, admiration of her peers and career longevity. But the question begs about the path not taken in her personal journey. In previous interviews Taryn has been an open book, questioning why her worth is attached to her career success, what the journey has been like in freezing her eggs and her awareness and desire for more balance and commitment to being present in her personal life.    Rebecca Bull – Creator / Executive Producer / Co-Host Zoe Weir – Co-Creator / Co – Host Sophie Jackson – Producer  Social Media – Naughty Nancy Social Media Agency Website / Brand Design – Foster Creative Video Editor – Luke MorganSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Branching away from her late mother, Carla Zampatti, also a Fashion designer and established brand that is considered fashion royalty, to develop her own connection with design and share her deep connection with colour and creativity - Bianca uses her sound knowledge base to enrich and empower the women that don her designs, in a considered, socially conscious and liberating way. Having two renowned and established parents, Carla Zampatti an Australian darling of Fashion and her late father, John Spender, a well respected Politician, Barrister and Diplomat, is a high bar for any child to reach for. Spending her childhood weekends and holidays in her mothers design studio helping count buttons or doing stocktake, to the freedom she experienced alongside her siblings in the hours after school when her parents were hard at work, might of been an opportunity to squander the early independence. But clearly through the example led, it afforded them growth and assisted them in calving out their own way. Bianca's curiosity to push past her family foundations and define her own way within the fashion world is a beautiful ode to honouring the teachings of our parents alongside the growth that comes with developing a strong sense of self. So we ask how do you weave a legacy left by your parents in with your own identity? Australian Survivor, a long running incredibly loved TV Series. Loved for its heart thumping challenges, unbelievable (and at times seemingly unbearable) living circumstances for its players, and the endless unfolding drama from alliances and the double crosses of those trying to win at tribal council. In this season of Titan's Vs Rebels, Caroline Courtis entered the game - A 55yr old woman, mum of 3 and midwife, who was finally in a place in her life where she was ready to do something truly for her and test herself in the ultimate way. 47 days stranded in Samoa with 24 contestants, split into two tribes - ‘Titans', a tribe made up of career leaders, and ‘Rebels' a tribe made up of the free spirited who forged new paths, were lead to compete, then ultimately merge for the win, as the two tribes dwindled after each tribal council and Caroline made it to the final 2 and the final Tribal Council. The question begs - who would want to push themselves like this? And what were the driving factors in the life before Survivor that pushed them to do so? Caroline was in a place where she had every right to sit back a little and smell the roses, but she didn't, she chose to put the very so often benched middle aged women on our TV screens in one of the worlds hardest TV challenge games and push herself to her limits. Although being questioned by a fellow tribe member for ‘what she actually brought to the game', Caroline managed to show the world the years of raising a family, being at the forefront of thousands of births and in a dedicated career care role, brought a strength, tenacity and resilience that only a wife, mum and woman in her 50's could. In Australia, women approaching retirement have about 23% less superannuation than men. As a figure that means approx. a $17 Billion gap, and it's currently being investigated by the Australian government to understand how the gap has gotten so great. To reflect upon how the gap has occurred, it's seems glaringly obvious. In Australia, currently there is a 12% gender pay gap within the work force, meaning that on average in a fulltime job, for every dollar a man earns, a woman earns .88cents.Then to account for the unavoidable biology, women are out of the work force for extended periods of time during their child bearing years, with a staggering majority not returning to full time work due to undertaking the carer role of their children, if not additionally, their ageing parents. And to top it off, in Australia, 1 in 10 women leave the workforce due to unmanageable peri-menopause or menopause symptoms that can start to occur in their 40's onwards. In review, when you summarise the above of forced time out of the workforce versus earning capacity, it's clear it is limited, especially in comparison to a males ability to work continuously if he so chooses. That's where Rebecca Pritchard, an Award Winning Senior Financial Planner at Rising Tide Leading Financial Experts strongly advises women to review their position, including doing the due diligence that's needed to split their partners superannuation. When asked the question about what is the point in practical terms, as if their partner passes away or they divorce, it will ultimately be equalised, Rebecca responded with “women need to start valuing our moral equity!”. If our wages are unequal and our working capacity is limited due to child bearing, and then the majority are undertaking the carer role where there is no financial value placedand it inhibits earning capacity, then how does all of that effect our self worth if society and the financial world doesn't place value on it? In the broader picture and financial world, the system and structure hasn't placed equitable value on a woman's time out of the workforce, or the carer role, but change is coming with the Australian Government announcing taxpayers taxes will fund superannuation payments on paid parental leave, and that's a good place to start. But we speak with Rebecca on the broad picture of how the value of adollar can hold a value on your sense of self, so if you can make financial and administrative changes in your personal money management, it could shift the value you place on your contribution to your household, and in-turn build your financial and emotional self worth.   Rebecca Bull – Creator / Executive Producer / Co-Host Zoe Weir – Co-Creator / Co – Host Sophie Jackson – Producer  Social Media – Naughty Nancy Social Media Agency Website / Brand Design – Foster Creative Video Editor – Luke MorganSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Consent. It's seems simple, like it is already a known standard protocol of decent human behaviour, but here we are, in 2024 with statistics like these - More than half of Australian women in their twenties have experienced sexual violence, 97% of girls and women in Australia have experienced street harassment, 1 in 5 women in Australia have been raped, with only 5% of women reporting sexual assault and only 1.7 % of sexual assault cases resulting in a conviction. These statistics are only a few that are outlined in Chanel Contos' book ‘Consent Laid Bare'.  Chanel, a young women that one night was sitting around with her girlfriends sharing the tragic tales of hook ups gone bad, only to realise it was scarily common and if her and her friends were masking sexual assault traumas that had occurred under the guise of being the socially acceptable ‘norm', just how many more women are there? So at the age of 22, she took to Instagram to respectfully poll the question of what was other girls and women's experiences, only to have such a response that her social media account exploded. From there, Chanel and her friends did a crowd fund and raised $90,000, which then help build a website and set up the petition teachusconsent.com. Chanel encouraged girls and women to leave their stories of sexual assault by naming only the perpetrators age and school. Nearly 3 years on and 7,000 testimonies, every previously hidden story has helped create data to push for change, which is exactly what is happening. Chanel and Teachusconsent.com has reformed education in schools, with consent education now being mandatory in all Australian schools from kindergarten to year 10. They have lead the charge with now making stealthing (where a male removes his condom without consent during intercourse) illegal, and received funding to create consent education material in collaboration with not-for-profit, Our Watch.  So the question lies, how does one woman manage to make such change? How do you cope when the world turns to you for guidance on what is one of the most weighing and distressing topics? And what does Chanel think is the seed for true societal change for today, as well as the generations to come?   Rebecca Bull – Creator / Executive Producer / Co-Host Zoe Weir – Co-Creator / Co – Host Sophie Jackson – Producer  Social Media – Naughty Nancy Social Media Agency Website / Brand Design – Foster Creative Video Editor – Luke MorganSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. To delve into this is to better understand the BRCA gene (aka BReast CAncer gene) which is gene that produces proteins to help repair damaged DNA. But the BRCA gene can mutate, and if a mutation occurs, not only does it continue down the bloodlines of families, but your chances increase by 45% to 85% for developing breast cancer in your lifetime, along with a 10% to 46% chance of ovarian cancer. This is where the power of Two sisters steps in. Lisa Bardas and Ellie Rogers are two sisters that were faced with discovering their larger family were all carriers of the mutated BRCA gene, when Ellie  was diagnosed with breast cancer. They made the incredibly bold and brave decision to undergo a double mastectomy and uterus removal, in a bid to live.
