Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And today we are back with the fourth and final installment of listener Q&A. So, let’s go ahead and jump right into it. In case you missed the first three installments, we talked about everything from mindset, to business ideas, lots of baby questions, pregnancy questions, postpartum fitness, pregnancy nutrition, and so on and so forth. Today, we are zeroing in on specific questions about nutrition and questions about safer skin care. Obviously, two of my primary passions. {laughs} So let’s get into it. Our first question is from Paleo Mrs. She’s asking; “How do you feel about bulletproof coffee, and intermittent fasting?” This is a great question. I actually get both of these questions pretty often, which is kind of funny, because they’re so specific. When it comes to bulletproof coffee, I have no problem with it. But I also don’t see it as a cure-all in a lot of ways. Every once in a while, a new product will pop up and it’s the new must-have, because it will help solve XYZ. And I’m always cautious of things that claim to solve a lot of things, especially if they’re food products. Bulletproof coffee, for those of you who aren’t familiar, the homemade variety is where you take some butter or coconut oil, some sort of a really great fat. You put it in with your hot coffee, stay with me, it’s delicious. {laughs} And then you can add, if you really want to get fancy, I’ve made it with collagen peptides. I’ll throw those in there, which are really great for hair and nail and skin growth. Some maple syrup is what I personally like to sweeten my coffee with. It’s delicious, you should try it if you are looking for a safer sweetener. And I like to put a little cream in my coffee, and then sometimes I’ll also add in some sort of a spice. Whether it’s a cinnamon. Primal Palate has a bunch of really wonderful sweet blends, like a gingersnap blend. I’ll sprinkle a little bit of that in there. And you blend it up. And what you get is a really delicious latte type of beverage. And it has a nice foamy top. It’s just wonderful. And because you added that butter, or that coconut oil or whatever your chosen fat was; ghee. You blend it in, you're able to start the day with some healthy fats in your stomach while you're drinking your coffee. And some folks really like it for a lot of reasons.

Ep. 263: Asking Us Everything Part 2 In this episode, Stacy and Sarah respond to your Ask-Me-Anything style questions! Click here to listen in iTunes If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 263: Asking Us Everything Part 2 Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:41) We're back for more AMA! We think this is a lot of fun. Paleo Principles update: We're at 688 pages. It's WAY TOO MANY! How did you write such a long book? No one knows. Maybe we'll do a workout video with it. Meanwhile, Stacy's kids are going to three different schools and one of them took the bus to middle school at 6:30! It's been exhausting! More AMA questions! Fun questions we love and haven't been asked before! Are either of you superstitious? (8:21) Stacy believes that people can find themselves in advantageous or disadvantageous situations, but there's not some force in the world that notices when you follow superstitions Sarah does do some superstitions out of habit, but doesn't think she actually believes that they have power. Sarah does say she believes in karma and also believes that people are meant to do things, but also believes in the chaos and randomness in the universe. There is some cognitive dissonance there. Stacy doesn't know why she does some superstitions, and catches herself doing them despite not really believing in them. They're fun for kids too. Which character from The Walking Dead do you most identify with? (12:36) Stacy definitely identifies with Maggie because she's kind and a leader who is into family. Sarah doesn't watch the show. Stacy modifies it to which character from Game of Thrones do you identify with? (13:03) Stacy identifies with Sansa and Dany Sarah took an online test that said she was a Robb Stark because of her leadership and strong moral compass. But Sarah also really loves Dany for similar reasons. Sarah also identifies with Samwell Tarly because she too would be in the back as a craven. Stacy and Matt love Tormund Giantsbane and Samwell Tarly as well. If you had to live in a house with other bloggers for a reality TV show, who would you choose? (16:18) Number one for both is Russ Crandall, The Domestic Man. Stacy also mentions Bill and Hayley from Primal Palate, Stacy wonders what kind of show this is? Are we casting for a competition? Because we're not naming our bad guys! Really, check out who we tag all the time on social media Stacy: RealFoodLiz Liz Wolfe, That Paleo Couple, and A Tribe Beyond Blessed, Kaitlyn from Grassfed Girl Sarah: Mickey and Angie from Autoimmune Wellness, Charissa Talbot from No Cook Paleo, Kirsten Peterson from Vibrant Life Army Wife, and Denise Minger. Check out our Live from Paleo FX House show for more! Is once a week for dessert too much? (19:48) Sarah: it depends. Is it going to satisfy you so you won't crave it anymore or will it just trigger more cravings? Stacy and Sarah both tend to be "fall off the wagon" types. In that case, maybe best to avoid it. What is your most hated activity in Strongman or Crossfit? Stacy: Running. It's why I started Strongman. Sarah: Weighted lunges or running with a weight. Stacy loved the feeling of being too sore to do normal activities. She always said "Bring it on!" What is the most often cooked meal in your house? (26:06) Stacy: Meatloaf and Chicken thighs. Sarah: roast chicken or liver burgers. Is there anyone in the paleo world you still get nervous talking to? (26:30) Stacy: No, not in the paleo world Sarah got giggly when talking to Mark (Definitely go back and listen to that one!) Sarah gets excited when people know who she is. Like Art Devany and Dr. David Perlmutter Stacy has learned that people are just people and are just like everyone else. Stacy says only a few people would intimidate her or make her squee. One of them is a baby sloth. Kristen Bell's sloth spatula is on backorder, but it is here. How tall are you? (33:23) Stacy: 5'7". People always think she's taller though. Sarah is 5'5 3/4", but she always says she's 5'6". Can you do a foreign accent? (36:33) Stacy: It would be terrible. However, Stacy and her stepsister would go to the beach and pretend to be French with the names "Ginger Bread" and "Carry-on Bag". Sarah: I do bad American versions of foreign accents and uses them to play with her kids. Which is your favorite of your books (38:54) That's like asking which is your favorite kid! They're all our favorites But if pressed, Stacy likes Real Life Paleo because it's how we really eat, but Matt likes Beyond Bacon because its a more sophisticated foodie book. Sarah: I really like my new one, Paleo Principles. It's like my previous books put together and made better! Rate and review us. Goodbye! Ep. 238: What's a FODMAP and Why Do Some People Avoid Them? In this episode, Stacy and Sarah talk about FODMAPs. What are they and why are some people avoiding them? And what can you eat that ISN'T high in FODMAPs? Click the picture above to be taken to iTunes If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 238: What's a FODMAP and Why Do Some People Avoid Them? Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:40) Hello, listeners! It's Stacy's turn to be enthusiastic! We absolutely recommend The School for Good and Evil! Great tween/teen reader fantasy! Also awesome on Audible! Sarah's daughter read all of The Lord of the Rings in 9 days! That's absolute insanity! Can Sarah's daughter, 10, read The Hunger Games? You weigh in! Also recommended: His Dark Materials It's hard to find great books at her advanced reading level that are appropriate for her age level. Recommendations? Today's Topic: FODMAPs! Wendy asks: "I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, fibromyalgia & fructose malabsorption. I was eating a FODMAP diet for a few years before starting Paleo 14 months ago. I combined AIP & FODMAP 8 months ago, and while I have felt much better, I'm not symptom free and still often have stomach pain in the lower left abdomen. This pain seems to be more frequent lately. Have I missed something?" (11:09) FODMAPs are poorly absorbed short chain carbohydrates. The acronym stands for Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, and Monosaccharides, and Polyols. These are fructose carbohydrates and sugar alcohols. They are loved by bacteria, but not absorbed in the small intestines Beans are a typical FODMAP rich food, which is where the song comes from. Finian recited the rhyme. He didn't know it before now, but now won't stop saying it! FODMAPs feed the bacteria in your gut, leading to a bacteria bloom. That's why you get bloating, gas, and other GI problems. People with FODMAP issues typically have poor gut health, gut dysbiosis, or a genetic predisposition. Problems with FODMAPs can lead to small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). Low FODMAP diets have been used to treat IBS and SIBO successfully. But the science seems to indicate that this is just symptom management. The real issue is that FODMAP loving bacteria are actually good bacteria that we need. Just not too many! A low FODMAP diet could eventually lead to a poor gut microbiome diversity. The new recommendation is to follow the low FODMAP diet for 2-4 weeks. Afterwards, go with gut healing like veggies, low-inflammatory diets, broth, L-Glutamine, and seafood. Then, add back in FODMAPs to tolerance. It help grow back these great beneficial bacteria. If it's not going well, there could be further issues like infection or other disorders. See a doctor! Current knowledge indicates that no diet can cure SIBO and only medical intervention can cure it. See a doctor! If you need guidance, see Paleo Mom Consulting! Why are some veggies like garlic, onions, artichokes, all the brassicas, etc. on the FODMAP list? Well, they do contain a lot of fructans, which are fructose rich fibers like inulin Sugar alcohols or polyols are in apples, watermelon, cherries, mushrooms, stone fruits, avocados, etc. Katherine asks: "What are the best resources for following Paleo AND low FODMAP? I'm struggling big time on what the heck to eat and when I look for answers, I can't seem to find a combo of the two 'diets'. Only one or the other. Very frustrating. I'm hungry!" (27:38) In The Paleo Approach and The Paleo Approach Cookbook, everything is labeled with whether it is low FODMAP or substitutions or if it can't be low FODMAP because many autoimmune people have GI issues. Aglaee Jacob of Radicata Nutrition is the expert on this. Get her book Digestive Health with Real Food because she really knows how to navigate this issue! When you're paleo, many of the high FODMAP foods are already gone! Avoid the onion family, the cruciferous vegetables and things like squash. Further, you just have to play with dose! If you still have issues with FODMAPs after a 2-4 week intervention, it's time to call in the experts! One of the cool things about FODMAP issues, is that it's one of the conditions with GI health you can actually cure it! Bill from Primal Palate shared his story with FODMAPs here and here. There are components to the gut health issue: getting the digestive enzymes right, getting the bacteria right, and getting the healthy cells right. All of those things are helped with a nutrient dense, low inflammatory diet, reducing stress and getting sleep! When Sarah did her nutrient dense diet, she never even needed to limit her FODMAPs. That might even do it for you too! Rate and Review us! Goodbye! Outro (45:12) Support us by shopping through links on our sidebars, please!

Haley Staley: Yeah, so I was doing paleo first before I met Bill, and I had really struggled with my weight for a long time, like ever since middle school. When I came upon paleo, it was the first thing that I had ever done that really worked. I was sort of able to heal my relationship with food through that. When I met Bill, I told him about it, and he was really the first guy, friend, whatever who really supported me with it. And then when we started dating, we just made a commitment to eat this way together, and we started cooking meals together, and taking pictures of it,
