Happy Satiated Saturday! Because of diet culture, I was scared of carbs for a long time. I barely ate them which ended up in binging on them. Thanksgiving became a time when I would eat as many sweet potatoes as I wanted only to feel sick the next day. One year I decided I was going to eat sweet potatoes every day while creating balanced meals around this food to experience that one of my favorite carbs could be incorporated into how I would like to nourish myself. By the next Thanksgiving, I had no desire to overeat on sweet potatoes. We're taught some harmful messaging from wellness and diet culture where it has become confusing how to create a sustainable way of eating. Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, PhD is a name you may know if you've been in the ancestral or paleo circles for any length of time. This woman is now considered straight-up blasphemous in these circles for her bold willingness to challenge her own biases and go back to the research to revisit some strongly held beliefs in the health and wellness communities. In today's conversation, Dr. Sarah shares how she came to realize she needed to go back to the drawing board, the never-before revealed moment she made a decision that would forever change the trajectory of her career, what she discovered, and how she manages to stay strong in the face of all the hate and vitriol from the community that once held her dear. She clears us some cognitive dissonance I had regarding vegetable oils and we dive into what she, myself, and others have experienced when we started taking a nutrient-first approach to what we eat and how we can increase our nutrient density without breaking our food budget. Why is it that mosquitoes seem to go after and bite some people more than others? This episode begins with an explanation of what does and doesn't make you attractive to this summertime pest. https://hartfordhealthcare.org/about-us/news-press/news-detail?articleId=42234&publicid=395# When it comes to health and managing your weight, "going on a diet” is one of the worst things you can do. That's because most diets are all about what you CANNOT eat rather than what you should eat. And it turns out you can eat just about anything if you understand a few important things about nutrition. That's what Dr. Sarah Ballantyne is here to reveal. She is author of the book, Nutrivore: The Radical New Science for Getting the Nutrients You Need from the Food You Eat (https://amzn.to/4cREoPN). You may hate rats but they happen to be very interesting, adaptable and crafty creatures. They basically go wherever humans go (with one interesting exception). Rats are vilified all over the world, but is it all warranted? Are they as horrible as people think? Listen to my guest Joe Shute. He is author of a book called Stowaway: The Disreputable Exploits of the Rat (https://amzn.to/3WiYzPl). He explains rats like nobody else. Listen and you may have some new respect for these rodents even if they totally creep you out. In kindergarten, you probably sat in a circle much of the time. There is good reason to believe that would be the best way to conduct most meetings – in a circle. Nutritional Science is a fairly new field of study relative to human existence. “There's no line separating good foods and bad foods. All foods lie on a spectrum.” - Dr. Sarah BallantyneFood is more than energy. From vitamins and minerals to fatty acids and more, nutrients are critical in all the chemical reactions that keep us alive. To keep up with this demand, we must continuously replenish our body's nutrient stores from our foods.Unfortunately, the nutrient density of our food is on the decline, meaning many of us are not getting all the nutrients we need to be healthy despite having enough food. Without sufficient resources, our body systems are under strain, and we're at risk for long-term health problems.By better understanding these nutrients and our bodies' needs, we can make informed choices. That's why today's guest, Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, developed Nutrivore, a dietary concept or set of principles focused on getting the nutrients we need from the food we eat. At its core, it's about developing a sustainable, higher-quality diet that gives us what we need to thrive. In this conversation, Dr. Sarah and I discuss the Nutrivore principles, the concept of nutrient density and why it matters, how the Nutrivore score works, the value of a diverse diet, common misconceptions about certain foods, the roles of macronutrients and micronutrients, balanced eating patterns, sustainable nutrition practices, and more. If you're serious about figuring out what type of diet is best for you – your answer is nutrient dense foods. Let me explain…Food fear is rampant right now, with social media demonizing different common foods/ingredients as well as promoting “healthy” diets that lack necessary nutrient dense foods.Nutrients are the raw materials that the human body needs to survive and thrive. If you are not consuming nutrient dense foods, you may have nutrient insufficiencies, which puts a strain on various systems in the body.So when you believe in this idea that some foods are “good” and others are “bad”, it can create a restrictive way of eating, which can then lead to insufficiencies or deficiencies later on. All this can become incredibly confusing, especially when you're being inundated daily with influencer messages telling you to follow this diet or that. You may get to a point where you are afraid to eat! That's why today's conversation is SO important. I'm joined by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne to discuss how to approach optimal nutrition without dangerous elimination diets or dogma around eating.Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, PhD is the founder of Nutrivore.com. She creates educational resources to help people improve their day-to-day diet and lifestyle choices, empowered and informed by the most current evidence-based scientific research. The Nutrivore approach is positive and inclusive dietary guidance, based on science and devoid of dogma, using nutrient dense foods as a foundational principle encompassed by the simple phrase: Nourishment, not judgment. Her new book, also called Nutrivore, is now available everywhere you can purchase books. We'll talk about some of the eye-opening points I discovered in the book, and why I found it such a valuable read to help you pick nutrient dense foods. In This Episode:Why nutrient deficiencies are such a HUGE problem (and how they happen)Why changing your mind is a good thing (even if you feel embarrassed)How morality applied to diet and foods is disastrousWhy you need protein (and what amino acids are used for in your body)The Nutrivore approach to optimal nutrition and nutrient dense foodsMost nutrient-rich foods to include in your dietQuotes“Deficiency technically refers to such low regular dietary intake of a nutrient that you develop a disease of malnutrition. There's scurvy, rickets, pellagra, beriber, night blindness, iron deficiency anemia. So we have these really well-characterized diseases caused by a single nutrient being too low.”“The more black-and-white we think about foods, the more it increases the risk for disordered eating, for weight regain cycles, so yo-yo dieting, the more it increases the stress response. And it's actually driving, I think, what is currently a big problem in society right now, which is that we think that a diet is about what we cut out. We think a diet is about bad foods that we have to eliminate. We're bad if we eat that bad food, we're good if we eat these good foods.”LinksFind Dr. Ballantyne online | Instagram | Facebook | Tiktok | YouTubeGET THE BOOK NOW – Nutrivore: The Radical New Science for Getting the Nutrients You Need from the Food You Eat5 Free Guides to NutrivoreHealthy Skin Show ep. 305: Elimination Diets, Food Fear + He
