Win Brands Group has been around since 2017, but this is the year the DTC roll-up strategy is really beginning to gain steam. The company owns a slew of online businesses, including the candle company Homesick and the weighted blanket brand Gravity. According to founder Kyle Widrick, things have been building nicely since inception, but thanks to big pandemic-related changes Win is now set up for more growth. “We've built up our holding company and our structure and our process in such a way that we plan to do a third vertical and a fourth and a fifth,” he said on the Modern Retail Podcast. “And this will continue for a decade-plus to come.” Most recently, this week, Win announced that it raised $40 million and acquired a new company to its portfolio: a hat brand called Love Your Melon. On the program, Widrick spoke about his ambitions for LYM, as well as the crossroads many founders of growing online brands face. “It was clear they were going to have to hire a tremendous amount of more people to get to success on Amazon and at retail,” said Widrick. “So the question becomes: Do you want to build that yourself and hire those folks yourself? Or do you want to partner with someone like Win?” Another big topic in the e-commerce space is the rise of roll-up companies. Though Win has been around for a while, other firms -- many of which like Thrasio and Perch are focusing on marketplaces like Amazon -- are continuing to grow and amass large amounts of venture capital funding. According to Widrick, his company and the others are different for a variety of reasons. One of the big ones being branding: Win Brands Group looks to acquire companies with a notable brand, while many other roll-ups are looking for fast-selling SKUs. Ultimately, said Widrick, that leads to the ultimate ambition he has for his company. “We're partnering with great founders and making bets on great brands that we plan to be around for the next 20 years-plus,” he said. “These are not flash in the pan -- in and out -- these are long-state businesses that we're betting on for the long term.”

“When you bring someone to tears by describing what you do, that seems viable.” Michael Mader and Sam Harper started their sock business, Hippy Feet, with a mission: to support young people experiencing homelessness. Inspired by brands like TOMS and Love Your Melon, they launched in 2016 with a one-for-one model, a pair of socks donated to someone in need for every pair sold. But the business, a certified B-corp, really began to gel when they integrated the mission into making their product. “We were going into shelters, donating socks, and we started to see familiar faces,” Harper says. “We told customers we would do this great thing by donating socks, and we did, but we were seeing the same people. People were still homeless. It felt hollow.” Adds Mader, “[Socks] address a symptom of homelessness, but by just treating the symptom, you're not doing anything to resolve the issue itself… We realized that simply donating a pair of socks was strong marketing, but it wasn't a strong impact. We wanted to have a strong impact.” In 2018, Hippy Feet piloted a Pop Up Employment program, bringing socks to shelters and paying those interested in hourly work to package product. By 2019, Hippy Feet dispensed with the one-for-one model to focus on employing homeless youths. “A job moves you along the pathway to self-sufficiency,” Mader says. But in March of 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic brought Hippy Feet's Pop Up Employment program to a halt, along with sales. Mader says the company was within weeks of bankruptcy when a new plan came together that puts Hippy Feet in a better position for long term success. “The pandemic caused us to solve the issue of scale around employment,” Haper says. Hippy Feet now offers short term, part time contracts to those in need of a job—just enough to get them on their feet, with confidence and connections to plan their next move. They're working on partnerships that would lead Hippy Feet workers to future opportunities. And they're thinking about ways to replicate the Minneapolis employment program in other cities. As Hippy Feet hit its stride on mission, sales followed. “When we got our values dialed in, it allowed us to share our values with consumer in a way that was much more digestible,” Mader says. The company improved its digital marketing and e-commerce experience to grow direct-to-consumer sales. What this process has taught the founders about the one-for-one model: “There are much deeper ways to give,” Harper says. He encourages brands considering this approach to ask themselves, “Are you actually meeting a real need? Many times, you're better off giving money—empowering a community, giving agency to whomever you're trying to help.” “We've been able to bake mission into our core business,” Mader adds. “We never have to ask ourselves, do we want to donate an inferior product to save money, or delay a donation. If you're holding a pair of Hippy Feet socks, it's gone through the hands of young person experiencing homelessness. It's a more authentic, deeper way of giving.” Then we go Back to the Classroom with the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business where David Alexander is an associate marketing professor. While he appreciates the Hippy Feet mission, Alexander says the founders could have crafted their business plan more efficiently. “Hippy Feet tried to create an opportunity. What we want, from a brand perspective, is people who buy into your commitment. Do the research to figure out who is going to support you and then change your dream to satisfy the opportunity.”

Anticipating that face masks are going to be a necessary accessory for the foreseeable future, Love Your Melon is ramping up its collection and returning to the buy one, give one model that made the beanie brand famous: for every mask purchased, the company will donate one to someone in the medical community. “Seeing how people are being instructed now to wear them whenever they’re out in public, I don’t think there’s any chance that this production goes away for the next 6 to 12 months at least. They need to keep being improved,” says Zachary Quinn, LYM co-founder and president. Quinn appeared on this podcast in 2019 to share the LYM founder’s story, which started as a classroom project at the University of St. Thomas. To date, LYM has given more than $7 million to the fight against pediatric cancer and 191,000 hats to children battling cancer. Now, in response to the coronavirus pandemic, LYM is making face masks for hospitalized children and their families, who are at high risk of contracting Covid-19. The company committed to donating 50,000 masks and is now making masks available for purchase to support the cause. A few styles and colors are being made in both cotton and surgical wrap material. Quinn talks about the process of quickly jumping into production, while also responding to increased online demand for Love Your Melon's core products. “People are coming out to support brands that are working hard to make a difference,” Quinn says. But the fate of LYM's flagship showroom in the North Loop of Minneapolis is up in the air, he says. The lease is up at the end of the year. As for leading his team, which is now working remotely, Quinn says he is “making myself available – no matter whether the request is large or small. Everyone is trying to help, everyone has something to offer. I’m trying to focus on being inclusive.” The added pressure is actually helpful, Quinn says. “Under pressure you find a lot of peace and calmness. I’m excited to be hands on and have a purpose. That’s what I’m feeling good about: having a purpose and a unified mission.” After our conversation with Quinn, we go Back to the Classroom with the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business. Digital Marketing Professor Gino Giovanelli says LYM is well positioned to succeed in these unusual times. “They have the ability to reach customers through social media, which is very powerful. And they’re not dependent on bricks and mortar retail.”

Morgan Riddle, Love Your Melon. Love Your Melon was founded in an entrepreneurship class at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota by two friends, Zachary and Brian, who wanted to start a business with a meaningful and positive social impact. On a mission to improve the lives of children battling cancer since October 22nd, 2012, Love Your Melon began with the simple idea of putting a hat on every child battling cancer in America. Fifty percent (50%) of net profit from the sale of all Love Your Melon products is given to support charitable programming through the Love Your Melon Fund and the nonprofits we support. Together, we create therapeutic experiences and fund charitable programming initiatives for children and families battling cancer.
How many of you have heard about the Love You Melon apparel brand? If you have, you may already know that with each purchase a hat is donated to someone undergoing cancer treatment. But what you may not know is that Love You Melon partners with over 24 non-profit organizations to support cancer research and families impacted by a diagnosis. Furthermore, you may not have heard YET about their awesome Love Your Melon Campus Crew and how college students nationwide can help create a special day for your child and whole family while undergoing treatment. In this podcast I sat down with Maria, the President of the Love Your Melon Campus Crew and a senior at Southern Connecticut University. She shares with us her personal connections to this organization, and why this volunteer work is so rewarding. We talk about how planning a special day is both for patients and their families in a time when their hearts are healing. His story has become legendary at the University of St. Thomas—and beyond. Zachary Quinn was a sophomore when he enrolled in an entrepreneurship class. There, he met Brian Keller, and together, they turned an assignment to create a business into Love Your Melon, the $40 million hat company that donates half its profits to fighting pediatric cancer. “We wanted to start something that would make a difference,” Quinn says. On this episode of By All Means, he outlines the key moments and decisions that set Love Your Melon up for success, including its college ambassador program, a hockey bus tour that garnered national press, and brand building through social media. Quinn talks about Love Your Melon’s commitment to U.S. manufacturing and its first brick and mortar store, which the company is using for special events designed to tell the brand story and build engagement. What’s next? “I never look more than six months out,” Quinn says. But he does have “more crazy stuff” in the works, including a concert series and e-gaming competition. After our conversation with Quinn, we go Back to the Classroom with his entrepreneurship professor at the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business Jay Ebben. “We really push students to build their career or a business around their own values, their own sense of purpose and mission,” Ebben says. He describes what it was like to have the Love Your Melon founders in class, and why he gave them an A- for the semester—a grading decision he’s never quite been able to live down.

Love Your Melon started as a university class project in Minnesota. Six years later, the brand is selling beanies, headgear, and apparel, and giving fifty percent of net profits to nonprofit charities in the fight against pediatric cancer. To date, they've given nearly $5 million dollars and over 156,000 hats to children battling cancer. Chief Operations Officer, Charlie Carlisle says the key to their growth is the mission behind their brand and the fostering key partnerships. On this episode, Charlie talks about the rapid growth of the company (10:51) and vetting third-party collaborators early (11:50). He illuminates the three things he looks for in a good partner (12:05). Charlie talks about upcycling the billboards from their nationwide campaign (19:12) and making calculated decisions on their digital ad spend (20:27). He shares how Love Your Melon is balancing their for-profit business with philanthropy (22:02). Charlie explains how his team uses Zapier (28:50) and Google Sheets (32:39) to power their operations, and the decision to transition to an outside enterprise resource planning system (33:35). Finally, he shares what Love Your Melon is tinkering with for 2019 (37:25). Links and images from this post are on the Lumi Blog.
Our February webinar focused on how lawyers can better market their services to the Millennial and Generation Z consumers. We answered the questions of: Who should you be marketing to?, What messaging do they want?, and How should you market to them? We discussed definitions of a Millennial and Gen Z person while keeping in mind that the year someone is born in does not define their entire personality or life decisions. What do Millennials and Gen Z value? Younger generations are used to less transparency and the ability to find answers for themselves, so online reviews and referrals from their social group are more meaningful in conjunction to make a purchase decision. They also value having options for the thing they are trying to buy or utilize. They want options for use and a variety of ways to get communicated to. Additionally, millennials, more than previous generations, have a higher expectation for a regular communication flow. This means that as a lawyer, you’ll need to make sure you ask about communication preferences. You should already be doing this for clients, but it is important to take note for your younger clients. These generations also care deeply about honesty and your company’s efforts towards social responsibility. There are many popular companies who are doing this well; Toms, Warby Parker, and Love Your Melon were all founded on the idea that they would give back with every purchase that is made. They not only do that but also make sure to include the story of “why.” So, How Do Lawyers Market to Millennials and Gen Z? Embrace Technology Offer alternatives to in-person appointments Try online appointment making options Utilize Social Media, but Don’t Be “Weird” Be weird if you are, but in an authentic way and not in a forceful, selling way Use the app how site how it’s meant to be used: Snapchat for short, casual videos, Facebook for longer posts, Twitter for quick informative snippets or sharing links to interesting things, Instagram for images and a short explanation. Connect with influencers, but only those that make sense for your industry and practice area. Also, try to keep this local by following or connecting with local organizations and people who can be a good resource for you Know Your Brand Be able to tell the story of your law firm’s “why?” Younger consumers want to know if there’s a reason why you practice the area of law you do or a reason you became a lawyer. Younger consumers want to see what’s happening in your office and know the reality of what it’s like to work with you. Segment Your Marketing Generation Z: They want to make sure you won’t ‘categorize’ them, based on gender or race. They grew up with easy access to technology and expect ads or contacts to feel familiar. They are highly critical of big business and are less trusting of sources. Young Millennials: They are trying to pave a new path outside of parental or societal expectations. Story and sourcing are vital to know whether or not they will spend money on a particular business. These people are also known as the ‘Fear of Missing Out’ Generation, which means that they do not want to miss out on experiences or knowledge. Older Millennials: 1 in 4 older Millennials are parents, which means that they are starting to need or have needed legal services for years. They need to know ‘why’ they should use a lawyer, instead of solving the issue themselves or with an online resource. Lastly, they find value in loyalty programs and build trust in companies, which results in referrals and longer-term usage. Own Your Pages Google My Business is an essential part of this equation. If you haven’t already read Gyi’s article on GMB for Law Firms, do it now. Make sure to follow his suggestions for your GMB page and then you’ll be in great shape. Make sure all information (business name, phone number, address) are accurate on the following sites: Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Yelp, Twitter, and Google+. If you don’t have pages on any of these, don’t worry about them unless you can spend time building those profiles. They Will Do Research Millennials prefer to do their own research and see if they are able to solve the problem without engaging a professional. Reviews and referrals matter greatly to them. The caveat here? Reviews stop being relevant to Millennials after one to three months. Additionally, Millennials are more likely to write you a review, if asked. Don’t assume they’ll sign on as a client at the initial meeting or phone call. Younger generations often want to meet with multiple lawyers before deciding to work with one. These are people who are more likely to care about your communication style and personality matching their own. Why Should You Try to Get Millennial Clients? We’ve all heard about how selfish these younger generations can be and how high maintenance they are. That may or may not be true, (I am inclined to frame it as having expectation of clarity, transparency, and communication), but no matter your current thoughts on Millennials, given that 25% of the US population falls into this generation, you are going to need to get Millennial clients to stay in business. Not only will you get Millennial clients if you make a few changes to your marketing and intake, but you will also get a more vocal and loyal type of clients. If you’ve been wondering how to get more millennial clients or just want to know if your current marketing efforts will attract a younger generation of clients, we can help you figure that out. Today on Cause Talk Radio, Megan and Joe talk to Alex Meysman, national event director at Love Your Melon (LYM). The online retailer donates 50% of the profits from each sale made to find a cure for pediatric cancer and to support families impacted by cancer. From LYM’s Cyber Monday sales alone, they donated over $400,000 to Pinky Swear Foundation and CureSearch. The sales for LYM were the highest the company has seen since it’s inception in 2013. LYM merchandise often sells out at soon as it hits the website, an accomplishment that must leave many national brands green with envy! On the show, Megan, Zach and Joe discuss: How LYM got started by two college students. LYM raised $2.5 million in 2016. Why the co-founders decided to focus on hats and pediatric cancer. The success LYM had on Cyber Monday. They didn't even discount their products! How LYM has activated "Campus Crews" as brand ambassadors. How LYM uses social media to spread its message.
