C-Section? Epidural? Hypnobirthing? Hospital gown? Midwife? Doula? Oh and hopefully the bassinet comes in time… Wait or is it better for the baby to sleep with me?So many thoughts, so many things, so many conversations to be had when it comes to pregnancy and birth! If you are overwhelmed or remember a time when you were, you are certainly not alone. Being a birthing individual in America today can be a lot. Well, maybe it was always a lot. And maybe we are just talking about it more now. Is social media making it better or worse? Maybe we have more choices (rightfully so!) with research on things that “science” didn't specifically support before like the use of breathing techniques and a doula during birth? Today we have a wonderful chat with Ashley Brichter, an educator, speaker, consultant, entrepreneur, and the founder of Birthsmarter, which provides unbiased, inclusive, and award-winning practical wisdom and guidance to the next generation of families. Ashley discusses how we don't need to follow predetermined paths that dictate how our birth goes. Rather, we should understand the physiology of birth along with the current society we live in and choices that the birthing family wishes to make. Despite her experience with hundreds of families as a doula and birth educator – like so many, her first birth did not “go as planned.” Ashley is an advocate for education above all and has a plethora of knowledge when it comes to assisting families navigate through the challenging space of birth and postpartum care.Ashley was born and raised in New York City, though she's temporarily relocated to Salt Lake City, UT and is enjoying the mountains and Red Rocks of The West with her husband and two amazing kids. The Wellness Paradox
Pre & Postnatal: the no-longer niche population w/Brittany Citron

The Wellness Paradox

If you really stop and think about it, the vast majority of female clients fit pros work with are either pre- or postnatal. Many young adult females will have children in the future, while many others have already had children. This makes the pre/postnatal population one of the largest special populations for fitness professionals to work with, representing a significant business and healthcare opportunity.Despite this fact, most fitness professionals are ill-prepared to work with these women, as significant gaps exist in both the research and dissemination of education about exercise with pre/postnatal population. Our guest in episode 64, Brittany Citron, recognized this gap after her own pregnancy fitness experience and decide to do something about it. Brittany is the founder of PROnatal Fitness – an evidence-based pre & postnatal fitness education company. Their primary line of business is to provide evidence-based education to fitness professionals on how to safely and effectively work with their clients in the pre and postnatal period.PROnatal Fitness' unique approach to exercise during pregnancy amounts to training for pregnancy, and the postnatal period, as distinct events with their own specific demands and challenges, both physically and mentally. In effect, PROnatal “periodizes” the pregnancy process, just as an athlete periodizes their training for a “peak” part of their season. This perspective is quite intriguing and innovative. Our conversation covers a wide range of topics associated with coaching the pre and postnatal client. We'll explore myths/misconceptions, best practices, and the opportunities that exist helping people navigate “the event of a lifetime,” as Brittany puts it. Most certainly a high mileage conversation here given the number of people that can be helped by evidence-based pre and postnatal fitness instruction and coaching.Show Notes Page: https://www.wellnessparadoxpod.com/podcast/episode/64 Our Guest: Brittany Citron Brittany is a former corporate marketing executive turned fitness entrepreneur and the founder of PROnatal Fitness – an evidence-based pre & postnatal fitness education company. Her career change came after experiencing firsthand the significant void in evidence-based pre & postnatal exercise information and resources during her first pregnancy. Today, PROnatal Fitness has educated thousands of health & fitness professionals across the globe in its unique “Performance Training Approach,” which focuses on training for the pregnancy journey like the major athletic event that it is.In addition to overseeing the company's operations, Brittany is also a national fitness presenter and the co-author of 5 courses, including the company's signature “Pre/Postnatal Performance training Specialist Course.” She holds a BBA from the University of Michigan, a Personal Training Certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), a Group Fitness Certification from the American Council on Exercise (ACE), and several pre and postnatal specializations, including Program Design, Corrective Exercise, and Diastasis and Pelvic Floor rehabilitation. Brittany lives in New York City with her husband and two children but makes frequent trips back to her home state of Michigan, especially to her favorite city – Ann Arbor. I have been on a bit of a binge creating podcasts about Motherhood.  Possibly because I am knee deep into early childhood with two young children or because the subject is so deep and vast and many parents thirst for some guidance and support.  Regardless of the force behind this eruption, for the next month I hope you enjoy several podcasts on different aspects of Motherhood. In this episode of Yoga | Birth | Babies, I speak with author, speaker and licensed social worker about her new book, Mother Matters: A Holistic Guide to Being a Happy, Healthy Mom.  We have a very fun and lively conversation about “mother care”, the ever changing role of a mother and “fair fighting” with your partner as well as many of the ups and downs new parents face on the parenthood adventure. In this episode:  Dayna’s background and personal transition into motherhood that inspired the birth of her book, Mother Matters: A Practical Guide to Being a Happy, Healthy Mom Mother care – what is it and how is it currently intertwined into our culture How the role of the mother figure has changed in the last several decades The biggest disconnect between the idea and image of a mother “doing it all” and the reality many people live Challenges new parents face these days Self care and ways a new parent can incorporate acts of self care into daily routine “Fair fight” technique General themes or issue Dayna commonly when researching and writing her book.
