A podcast for parents and caregivers ready to take their experiences with young children from surviving to thriving.
Today my guest is the brilliant, Jordan. Sharpiro. Jordan Shapiro, PhD is a globally celebrated American thought leader. He's senior fellow for the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop , and Nonresident Fellow in the Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution . His Forbes' column (2012-17) on global education, learning through digital play, kids and culture was read by over 5 million people around the world. He is an international speaker and consultant whose fresh perspective combines psychology, philosophy, and economics in unexpected ways. His book, The New Childhood: Raising Kids To Thrive in a Connected World (Little, Brown Spark 2018) changed the cultural conversation about parenting and screen time. In his upcoming book, Father Figure: How to be a Feminist Dad (Little, Brown Spark 2021), Shapiro offers a norm-shattering perspective on fatherhood, family, and gender essentialism. This thoughtful exploration of dad-psychology—presented from an archetypal perspective—challenges our familiar assumptions about the origins of so-called traditional parenting roles. There are hundreds of books on parenting, but when it comes to books about parenting identity, rather than the nuts and bolts of raising children, nearly all are about what it's like to be a mother. Father Figure fills that gap. It teaches dads how to embrace the joys of fathering while guiding toward an image of manliness for the modern world. Shapiro has worked an adviser and strategist to the United States Air Force, helping Air University's eSchool develop pedagogical practices that promote sophisticated 21st century “habits of mind.” He created Thomas Edison State University's flagship online course, “Critical Thinking with Video Games,” an interdisciplinary learning experience designed for adult learners, that draws connections between the classic texts of the Western academic tradition and the narrative and mechanic components of today's most popular video games. During the week, you can find him in the classroom at Temple University, where he teaches in the Intellectual Heritage Program and developed the online version of the university's core curriculum. Asked to list his favorite texts to teach, he doesn't hesitate, “Plato's Republic and Freud's Civilization and its Discontents. It's amazing to see young adults discover how old ideas can remain so relevant even in such a new world.” Shapiro is an expert adviser to the World Economic Forum, and a participant in China's Taihe Civilization Forum. He's also a member of the academy that judges the Varkey Foundation's Global Teacher Prize. And he serves on the advisory board of the exclusive global think tank, Symi Symposium, led by former Greek prime minister George Papandreou. He regularly travels around the world, delivering keynote addresses at international conferences hosted by organizations like UNESCO's Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP). A Philadelphia native, Jordan is a graduate of Friends Select School, a small Quaker college preparatory school. He earned his bachelor's degree at Bard College, where he studied closely with Lithuanian filmmaker/artist Adolfas Mekas and Judaism/religion scholar Jacob Neusner. He earned his doctorate in depth psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, CA, where he studied phenomenology with legendary American philosopher Edward S. Casey (former president of the American Philosophical Association). Before graduate school, Jordan dreamed of becoming a chef. His first job, as a teenager, was as a prep-cook at Jack's Firehouse, a long-time Philadelphia institution. He quickly worked his way up to the position of head line cook. Next, he took a gap year between high-school and college, to work with celebrity chef Bobby Flay at New York City's Mesa Grill and Mesa City restaurants. After college, Jordan became owner/operator of the Reading Terminal Market's Down Home Diner. In 2008, he sold his stake in that business to shift his focus to education and public service. At parties, Jordan has been known to humble-brag about winning the $10,000 grand prize on Television's America's Funniest People when he was thirteen years old. Along with his best friend, he sang an original song called “What Part of the Pig Does the Hot Dog Come From? ” Find out more about Jordan on his website https://www.jordanshapiro.org And you can find some fun stuff he posts on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/jordosh/ I have so much gratitude for everyone who has been listening to the Joyfull Parenting Podcast and joining the community of supporters at https://www.patreon.com/user?u=40232525 ! Today my guest is Sarah Baldwin. Sarah’s whole life changed in an instant when she gave birth for the first time in 1992. Soon she realized that children were meant to be her life's work. Prior to that, she had been pursuing a career as an actress, but the moment her son Harper was born, she experienced the profound spiritual transformation that comes when, suddenly, one puts another’s needs ahead of one’s own. She discovered my incredible love for children. Soon afterward, she discovered Waldorf education, to which she felt drawn like a moth to a flame. She enrolled in Waldorf teacher training while he son was still in preschool and his brother was just a baby. Being in a Waldorf kindergarten felt like a natural progression for her (with its emphasis on storytelling, singing and puppetry) and not as much like a career change from acting. Educating young children gave her a sense of purpose and felt like the work she was born to do. After 15 years of working with young children in the classroom, and with her two boys now grown, she made another big life transition. As the owner of Bella Luna Toys, she is excited to share her experience and knowledge of children, play and Waldorf toys in a new way. She looks forward to continuing her mission to support parents and families, as well as to continue offering the beautiful, natural playthings that have been available online at Bella Luna Toys since 2002. Today my guest is Alfie Kohn. Mr. Kohn writes and speaks widely on human behavior, education, and parenting. The most recent of his 14 books are SCHOOLING BEYOND MEASURE…And Other Unorthodox Essays About Education (2015) and THE MYTH OF THE SPOILED CHILD: Challenging the Conventional Wisdom About Children and Parenting (2014). Of his earlier titles, the best known are PUNISHED BY REWARDS (1993), NO CONTEST: The Case Against Competition (1986), UNCONDITIONAL PARENTING (2005), and THE SCHOOLS OUR CHILDREN DESERVE (1999). Kohn has been described in Time magazine as “perhaps the country’s most outspoken critic of education’s fixation on grades [and] test scores.” His criticisms of competition and rewards have helped to shape the thinking of educators — as well as parents and managers — across the country and abroad. Kohn has been featured on hundreds of TV and radio programs, including the “Today” show and two appearances on “Oprah”; he has been profiled in the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times, while his work has been described and debated in many other leading publications. Kohn lectures widely at universities and to school faculties, parent groups, and corporations. In addition to speaking at staff development seminars and keynoting national education conferences on a regular basis, he conducts workshops for teachers and administrators on various topics. Among them: “Motivation from the Inside Out: Rethinking Rewards, Assessment, and Learning” and “Beyond Bribes and Threats: Realistic Alternatives to Controlling Students’ Behavior.” The latter corresponds to his book BEYOND DISCIPLINE: From Compliance to Community (ASCD, 1996), which he describes as “a modest attempt to overthrow the entire field of classroom management.” Kohn’s various books have been translated into more than two dozen languages . He has also contributed to publications ranging from the Journal of Education to Ladies Home Journal, and from the Nation to the Harvard Business Review (“Why Incentive Plans Cannot Work”). His efforts to make research in human behavior accessible to a general audience have also been published in the New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, Parents, and Psychology Today. His many articles on education include a dozen widely reprinted essays in Phi Delta Kappan during the ’90s and ’00s. Among them: “Choices for Children: Why and How to Let Students Decide,” “How Not to Teach Values: A Critical Look at Character Education,” “Test Today, Privatize Tomorrow,” and “Why Self-Discipline is Overrated.” Kohn, the father of two grown children, lives (actually) in the Boston area and (virtually) at http://www.alfiekohn.org I have so much gratitude for everyone who has been listening to the Joyfull Parenting Podcast and joining the community of supporters at https://www.patreon.com/user?u=40232525 ! Today my guest in Xavier Dagba. Xavier is a trauma informed transformational life coach, shadow work facilitator and intuitive healer. He loves to think of himself as an emotional alchemist. It is his firm belief that personal freedom can only be achieved when we allow ourselves to welcome the wisdom hidden within every emotional state, good or “bad”. His own transformational journey brought him to dive into the universe of shadow work and he tends to think that only when you are willing to integrate your shadows, can you fully claim your power. When you go through that path, you begin to lead your life from your heart and not from your wounds.Xavier feels most alive, when he’s helping people shed their limitations, heal, claim their power, live a life of purpose and tap into their full potential. Today my guest is Debbie Reber. Debbie is a parenting activist, New York Times bestselling author, podcast host, and speaker who, before creating TiLT, spent more than fifteen years writing inspiring books for women and teens and speaking about issues like media literacy, self-esteem, and confidence. But when Debbie learned that her son Asher was differently-wired, she spent years figuring out how to best support him in school and in life, recognizing how incredibly difficult it was to find solid, reliable, useful, and most of all optimistic, information for parents like her. Many of the websites and organizations that did exist didn’t speak to her, nor did they help her figure out a plan for getting Asher what he needed while supporting herself in the process. Her best leads came from word-of-mouth from other parents who’d been down the road before her, but even then, figuring out what to do and where to turn next was like going geocaching without a GPS. She created TiLT so parents stuck in this place of not-knowing and frustration can feel connected and grounded as they move forward in figuring out what their child needs in a way that feels positive and hopeful for the whole family.Since 2002, she’s written ten books, including Differently Wired: Raising an Exceptional Child in a Conventional World , which was published by Workman Publishing in June 2018. Her most recent books for young adults include Doable: The Girls’ Guide to Accomplishing Just About Anything and Chill: Stress-Reducing Techniques for a More Balanced, Peaceful You .Before forging her own career path, Debbie worked in TV and video production, producing documentaries and PSAs for CARE and UNICEF, working on Blue’s Clues for Nickelodeon, and developing original series for Cartoon Network. She has an MA in Media Studies from the New School for Social Research and a BA in Communications from Pennsylvania State University. In December 2018, Debbie, her husband, and 15-year-old Asher relocated back to NYC after living in Amsterdam, the Netherlands for five years. Debbie is an avid runner, traveler, and hiker, and claims reality shows as her guiltiest of pleasures.
