On today's episode of Empowered in Health, we're diving into one of the deeper mental soundtracks and messages that has been shared over and over and over when it comes to women's health and wellness. This idea that the goal should be to "get your body back" postpartum. Or in perimenopause. Or really in any stage of life. Here's why I don't love it. We're not going back. The truth is, we are meant to evolve throughout our lifetime. When we step into motherhood, everything is different. So the idea of the focus on "getting back" to where we were is doing women everywhere a massive disservice. This messaging will hold us hostage forever if we don't keep up the hard work to unpack it and break it down. As I mention several times - this isn't an easy process. Personally, I'm still doing SO much uncomfortable unlearning and growth through this concept...as I've been absorbing the message for years, like millions of other women. So today - I want to empower you to step into the 2.0 version of yourself. And beyond. To chase evolution and strength and new and bold action like never before. FORWARD is the best way and the only way to continue to reach our goals from the inside out. I'd love to hear from you - what do you think of this message? She survived breast cancer - twice! And now she's on a team that's getting on bikes for a cross-country ride to raise money for cancer research, taking us inside her fitness training and faith mindset for next month's big challenge. (2:15) Susan Glisson starts by telling us how this former swimmer and softball player got into cycling, including an Ironman. Her second bout with cancer prompted her to put the bike down 8 years ago, but she picked it back up this year to take her life and body back from the disease. How does cycling differ from other sports, in terms of a workout? She explains the muscles you use, what burns, what kind of road bike she uses, and the bruises she's gotten. (6:36) Starting September 7, the Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer ride will start in Oregon and end a month later in NJ. Susan is riding around 80 miles, 3 days straight - in late Sept - from St Louis MO to Indianapolis IN. The goal for the dozens of Bristol Myers Squib employees and cycling teammates is to raise $1 million for the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Here's how you can help: www.cancerbikeride.org. This competitive woman talks about her motivation to take on this big ride, at her age in her mid 50s, not as strong or fast as she used to be, but living life to the fullest. What about the last 5 months of training? She breaks down the schedule and numbers. (12:51) We discuss her personal cancer journey, from her first diagnosis in 1997 to the next one that involved a difficult 8 hour surgery, an emotional wakeup call from God, and mental strength through the pain. Susan also learned to eat clean. For this cycling adventure, she hydrates every 5 miles or 20 minutes, but PB&J sandwiches are favorites to eat. (21:52) She's also sending a message to her son and family that there's life after cancer! These cancer rides are also about bringing awareness and compressing the stigma she talks about. (26:40) For Susan, faith is also crucial as she lives and cycles, taking in God's beauty and knowing that anything is possible if she believes, as the Bible says. She was also a former athletic trainer at Auburn University (under coach Pat Dye), where her husband played football. Now, she's the one being served and trained as an athletic team member. Wee end with her talking about this Coast 2 Coast 4 cancer ride - the anxiety of the unknown, their average speed on the bikes, daily plans, and how to donate to this cause. In today's episode I'm excited to introduce you to Marisa Chadbourne. She is a myofascial release therapist and she's been my myofascial release therapist for many years. Marisa owns Touch of Health Myofascial Wellness Center in Sayville, NY. She created Touch of Health as a supportive and therapeutic environment to assist her clients through their healing process. Marisa is also a Certified NLP practitioner since 2019 and a locally and nationally published author regarding Fascia, the Mind-Body, and Subtle Energy. Today we talk about how myofascial release therapy can help people with muscle and joint pain, inflammation, stiffness, physical pain in general, and even recovery from trauma. The Myofascial Tissue The myofascial tissue is a network of tissue that spreads throughout your entire body. It connects your muscles, joints, and bones. It also provides support to your organs, helping to keep them in place. If you could see it, your fascia would look like a single sheet of tissue paper. The fascial system is omnipresent throughout the human body as one continuous web-like structure connecting all parts and systems together so, it's the only system in the body that actually comes in contact with every other system right down to the cellular level. The myofascial tissue has three major components: 1. elastin fibers, which give our bodily movement it's elasticity and stretch, 2. collagen fibers that give our physical structural support and 3. a ground substance which is a gel-like substance that mainly helps with intracellular communication. So, this matrix of collagen, elastin and ground substance is what holds our bodies upright. What is Myofascial Release Therapy Myofascial release therapy is a connective tissue therapy designed to bring the body back into its natural alignment by releasing facial restrictions, and in turn, this increases our range of motion. It also takes pressure off of pain sensitive structures within the body. All different types of injuries can be treated. It can even help people who have autoimmune disorders, neurological dysfunction, etc. During myofascial release therapy, the therapist applies light pressure by hand to find myofascial areas that feel stiff instead of elastic and movable. These stiff areas, or trigger points, are thought to limit muscle and joint movements, which can play a part in widespread muscle pain. The main difference between massage and myofascial release therapy is that in myofascial therapy we are focusing on the fascia or connective tissue, while in massage the main focus is on the muscles. With myofascial therapy, the goal is to release fascial restrictions in order to bring the body back into healthy alignment. This is done by using gentle sustained pressure of 5 minutes or more to make a very specific change within the connective tissue. A massage is more of a soft tissue mobilization technique. Another difference is in the intention to bring the whole body back into alignment by opening up the entire fascial system. For example, even if someone has neck pain, in myofascial release therapy we evaluate the whole-body posture instead of just focusing on one part of the body. What is a Myofascial Restriction? When we say there's a fascial restriction what we're mainly saying is that the ground substance part of the fascial system starts to become solidified. When that happens the elastin fibers, collagen and muscle fibers get stuck in the solidification and they're unable to slide across each other to do their job correctly. This will in turn stiffen movement and put pressure on pain sensitive structures. The main four causes for this solidification or facial restriction are surgery, repetitive movement, inflammatory responses and also trauma, whether it be physical or emotional trauma. This solidification can happen in response to our thoughts, environment or something that's happening to us on an emotional level. This is because of the mind-body connection and how they respond to each other. What we're looking for in myofascial release is what was the cause of the restriction. So we allow for there to be many different types of healing: structural healing, somatic healing, and emotional healing. Some people have an emotional release and some people don't. It really depends on the type of healing that they're looking for but it completely impacts the body much farther than people are aware of. When we open up a fascial restriction it's like opening up the dam of energy flow. Opening up the dam for more intercellular communication to flow smoothly. When we talk about emotion, a lot of times we refer to it as energy in motion, and when trauma happens in our lives, that energy can get stuck, leading to solidification of the ground substance. And so, as we shift the gel-like substance back to its normal state, the energy is released and that's what people are feeling. Sometimes during a myofascial release therapy the person might go into a meditative state or a deep relaxation state as this kind of therapy also stimulates the parasympathetic system and the vagus nerve. And that's when we have the opportunity to be able to go a little bit deeper in feeling and releasing trauma because we're not in the place of thought, but it has to happen naturally. Myofascial Release Therapy for Pain vs Maintenance This kind of therapy is good not only for when someone does get in pain (to help release it) but also for maintenance and preventing pain. What's important here is having body awareness and empowerment of how we can support ourselves during a treatment. It's important that people tune into their body to see how they feel over the next few days after their first session. Once people find that rhythm of what they need for maintenance they can make that decision on their own and so this decision is made from an innate place instead of being told what to do. If someone wants to make a lot of change quickly, they can do a myofascial intensive series, where the person comes in three to five times over one to two weeks and we get a lot done over that time. Then it's more likely for that change to stay with the person. We also teach people how to do self myofascial release at home so that release and opening that was made can be maintained at home by the patient by continuing to feel into their body and where they're restricted. This is the special relationship between the client and the practitioner doing work together and teaching the patient how to do it on his/her own. During this process you can also learn so much about your body, the signals it gives you and what it needs to heal. There are so many different symptoms that people come in with for this therapy, not just pain, but sleeping disorders, anxiety, fatigue, autoimmunity, neurological dysfunction, and they all benefit from this work. We look at symptoms as the signals the body is giving you. The most important part of the facilitation is guiding the client to get in touch with what these messages are on a subconscious level. This is another part that isn't just purely structural. We're looking at the body as a whole, mind, body and spirit, and how they are always working together. Combining Myofascial Therapy with Other Treatments When we identify that inflammation is causing the fascial restriction, we then ask why the inflammation is there in the first place. We need to take a look at your diet for example, so the client might be advised to take the healing to the next level by talking to a Functional Practitioner or a Naturopathic Dr. to help them. Then they get the benefit of both by working synergistically. As the inflammation is coming down and the body's healing, then there's less likelihood of repeated issues coming up. We don't want to just keep continuing releasing the same fascial restrictions over and over again. If what is causing the issue is a repetitive movement for example, then the client is oriented to find out how they can change that movement, and how they can change the inflammatory response. They need to make an ergonomic change. Or someone has a compensatory pattern from some type of physical movement they've been doing their whole life, then they can also do physical therapy along with myofascial release. This is because if you just continue to work on the restriction, without addressing the cause, you may not be solving the problem. So it is a priority to think about what other approaches will complement myofascial release therapy for each individual so that you can feel better for good. At the same time, myofascial therapy helps other approaches to work better because the fascia connects with all the other systems in the body. By opening fascial communication, it is going to support healing on every other level. BACK PAIN... I'll admit, maybe not the sexiest topic, but arguably one of the MOST important topics that not enough people are talking about or are aware of. BACK HEALTH & BACK PAIN - I can almost guarantee most of you tuning in have at some point experienced back pain, or maybe you presently have back issues that just don't seem to ever correct themselves. In this episode, I have President of Back Fit Pro and Owner of Spirit & Spine Restoration in Victoria BC, Sarah (who is also my bestie in real life), join me to discuss everything spine, common back injuries, how over training is causing you more harm and sabotaging your progress, and how to listen to your body to ensure you are supporting yourself for the long term! I personally struggled from a year long chronic injury that had me in a ton of pain and almost unable to get out of bed for months - yet no one could tell me what was wrong. I had multiple tests done, had gone to the ER multiple times, saw several professionals and yet zero answers. It wasn't until about a year later, when thankfully the universe brought Sarah into my life, that she was able to distinguish my intolerable stomach pain as a bulged disc in my spine which had been radiating pain (likely due to years of bodybuilding and over training / not properly taking care of my spine health!). This subject is eye opening, and we provide you with some great things to consider as well as some ways to rest or support your back if you do experience pain, if you're sitting for long hours for work, or if you just want to prioritize long term back health (which we all should be doing!). How circadian rhythm impacts our metabolic flexibility. How breathing exercises can help us get into the parasympathetic state. Janie would like to know how much protein her body can absorb at once and how much protein she should consume over a 24-hour period. Suzanne lives a clean lifestyle and wants to know if there is a way to shift the metabolism of estrogen away from the 4OH pathway. (She is referring to the DUTCH test. A listener asks how to use fasting to help with candida. Michaela was recently diagnosed with gallstones and has one blocked duct. She read that saturated fat is not good for her condition, so she wants to know what she can eat to stay on keto. Lena has been doing strict keto with OMAD for three months, but her GGT is very high. She asks if that could be due to fasting. Why we tend to experience insomnia while doing a ketogenic diet, and how to address chronic insomnia patterns. Mary Jo wants to know when to take my creatine supplement powder. Ben and I discuss the supplements we use. Joseph Nations Delivered Israel's Body Back to the Land. A surprising look at the last two Torah Portions, Vayigash & Vayechi. Are the Ezekiel prophesied dry bones of Israel with sinew and flesh on them actually the embalmed body of Israel which the Joseph nations delivered back to the land of Israel in 1949? Did the ancient nation of Israel die with Y'shua and become embalmed 2000 years ago? Israel the man... 7 Years of Plenty followed by 7 Years of Famine followed by the death and 40 day embalming of Joseph's father Israel, followed by 70 days of mourning in all Egypt and then 7 more days of mourning by Joseph after he delivers Israels embalmed body back to Canaan. Has the nation of Israel been following after the pattern of Israel the man for the last 2000 years since the ancient nation of Israel died with Y'shua and went through a 40 year embalming process? Are we possibly entering the last 7 years of Joseph's mourning for his father after delivering him back to the land? We will follow the scriptural patterns in today's program and see where they lead us.
What is peptide therapy and what does it have to do with weight-loss? What role do peptides play in improving chronic conditions, anti-aging, and longevity? Gabriella Woldman is the Director of operations and the Patient care coordinator for Alegro Health & Wellness, who is here to answer these questions, and more, on today's episode of Food Heals. Peptides are short-chain amino acids found naturally in the body. The GLP-1 peptide hormone that we are talking about today is produced in the small intestine. It increases the body's ability to produce insulin, inhibits glucagon, and decreases appetite, resulting in healthy and effective weight loss. It is self administered as a small subcutaneous injection which is injected into the subcutaneous fat weekly. Peptide therapy has been shown to assist patients with losing weight, reducing chronic pain, improving immune function, hormone regulation, cardiovascular health, and so much more. Today we are specifically speaking about Semaglutide and B-12 which is what Allison has been taking to lose 16 pounds in 9 weeks. We are not discussing Wegovy or Ozempic which are the brand names of this peptide. Allison has not tried those and cannot speak to their side effects, nor effectiveness. I had the pleasure of having my dear friend, Liz Stone, as a guest on my newest podcast episode. She has her own unique story of experiencing and then dealing with unresolved trauma for years, so I was excited to bring her on and dive more into this topic today. Liz Stone is a trauma survivor and now a trauma healing mentor and sound healing practitioner. She is the owner and founder of the Balanced Stone, a beautiful healing center in Utah that offers hope and healing through trauma informed resources, classes, and practitioners. In today's episode, we're talking about: -What trauma actually is, and how it impacts everything as it becomes ‘locked' in your tissues -Liz's personal story of experiencing what's known as ‘trauma stacking' as a teenager, which eventually led to agoraphobia and PTSD in her adult life -How the healing process starts (and what may or may not work for you when you're trying to heal) -Why your body (specifically your heart) is actually the safest place for you to be -Various methods and tools you can use to reconnect with your body -Recognizing that the authority in your healing is you (your higher self) My conversation with Liz was truly special; she is so full of joy, love, and wisdom, and she has a sincere desire to help others navigate their trauma. We talked about how so many of us are ‘doers', and we use being busy as an avoidance tool. We think we're going to ‘do' our way to our health and clean up our trauma, but that's just not how it works. Trauma creates resistance for you to be able to experience the joy, happiness, peace, clarity and calm that are on the other side. It's time for you to take that first step (wherever you decide to start), because you are worth it, and you deserve to live the life you want! “I always say I'm trying to go back to intuitive eating because obviously that's what I did for 35 years of my life before I got pregnant, I was eating intuitively and it worked for me really well, my body is still healthy. “- Anita Musiol In this episode of the podcast, we welcome Anita Musiol, she is a coach, educator, speaker, and author. She's dedicated to helping people transform their lives through food and body acceptance. Anita found her way back to intuitive eating after years of struggling, and urges listeners to find their own path to freedom. She has been body conscious her whole life and when she got pregnant, she only gained weight on her belly. This experience has left her to feel vulnerable after having a child, and with all the changes going on in her life at the time, it was easy for other people to tell her what she should be doing to look good. She discusses her experiences with intuitive eating, which is when you eat based on your body and not according to a diet plan. [00:01 - 10:36] The Struggle With Food Restriction and Weight Obsession Katy introduces Anita Musiol Anita shares her story of struggling with food restriction and weight obsession after getting pregnant, and eventually finding her way back to intuitive eating She talks about her turning point When she got pregnant, she only gained a little weight despite having a C-section She heard comments from people about how she needed to “look good” She shares that after her sone was born and she could start exercising to lose the weight off naturally, she would still hear comments about how women need to lose weight in order to “look good” [10:37 - 26:47] Finding Your Way Back With Intuitive Eating Anita talks about pregnancy and having children is such an interesting element of how women relate to their bodies She says that it's common and normal for bodies to change, and to be at a higher weight after you've had babies That's what happens to our bodies That alone makes women afraid of getting pregnant again [26:48 - 29:10] How to Stop Your Body From Weight Cycling She talks about how she struggled with her weight for many years and how she eventually found out that her weight was not always under her control She has tried different diets and methods of weight loss but none of them worked for very long She eventually find intuitive eating and decided to try it out She realized that the set point weight might change depending on how often she dieted in the past She found that intuitive eating is a way of eating that allows for hunger and fullness to be self-determined, rather than based on external cues When struggling with body image, one of the best things to do is to be grateful for their health and feel good about themselves One of the best pieces of advice that she has ever received is to stay true to themselves [32:25 - 39:05] Wrapping up! Anita shares that being true to yourself is being honest with your thoughts, feelings, and actions Listening to your body is important for intuitive eating Save tons of time and money by planning meals ahead! Grab Dr. Katy's FREE Six Simple Steps to Menu Planning guide at com/menuplan! Key Quotes “Let yourself eat when you want and what you want.” - Anita Musiol “I guess for some people it's easier or faster to bounce back and others are not even bouncing back because they've been dieting all their lives, so they kind of probably have to teach themselves or their body needs to teach itself.” - Anita Musiol “Everybody's body is different in terms of how it kind of responds after pregnancy and after giving birth… That's not how biology works. We don't get anything back it's we just have our body the way it is and we have to be able to move forward with that.” - Katy Harvey Resource Mentioned: Set Point Weight Theory Connect with Anita Learn more about her on her website, Facebook, and Instagram! A Wellington woman is vowing to fight after her husband's body was forcibly taken from their home by his whānau, to be buried at his Northland marae. Tommy Murray, who was 54, had a heart problem and died suddenly last week. His wife, Sara Murray, opened the doors of their Naenae home so whānau could join her and her teenage daughters to grieve with his body. Her spokesperson told RNZ's Māori news Director Māni Dunlop that things turned ugly on Sunday night when the Northland whānau lifted Tommy Murray's lidless coffin and took him from the house - twice almost dropping him out. The whānau drove Tommy Murray back to Whangapē where he was buried. The spokesperson says this was his worst nightmare. Sara Murray tried to talk to the whānau but they didn't listen because she is Pākehā - though she understands tikanga Māori. Sara Murray wants the police to press charges and is seeking legal advice to get her husband's body back. The Murray whānau has been contacted for comment.

Here you are in the thick of it all. Maybe it feels like your toddler is running the household and all you want is for mealtime to go smoothly. Maybe your struggles are with an older child about screen time, and you would do anything for them to unplug. Or maybe you have a teenager who is impossible to be around, grumpy all the time. Here is something I know for sure - whatever motherhood throws at you, you're going to be better able to handle it if you're taking care of yourself. So, how do you ensure that you're doing this? Let's embark on the solution. I have identified 5 hotspots in modern motherhood that need to be addressed. Today we're going to deal with the first one. I am going to give you your first actionable step that is going to get you on your way out of the depletion. Step 1 - The very first thing to do to extinguish mom burnout is lift weights 3 times/week. That's right. Lifting weights, a minimum of 3 times/week, is the first step in beginning to end the madness of being exhausted and depleted from motherhood. I'm sure you're aware that there are about a zillion reasons why exercising, specifically lifting weights, is good for you - but in this podcast we're going to understand this on a whole new level, we're going to focus specifically on reasons why lifting weights is the first step to extinguishing mom burnout. It appears that CBD oil helps to bring about homeostasis in the body which is the balance within our bodies and minds. My guest today is Nikole Myers who is with Green Compass Global and she explains how CBD oil helps us move toward equilibrium. The human body has its own internal setting that allows us to be healthy and happy. However, if we are in pain, this is difficult to achieve. Nikole, due to an accident, was once on 6 prescriptions but she wasn't getting better. A friend shared her experience with CBD oil, and, as the saying goes, the rest is history. Nikole is off all her prescriptions and healthier than she has ever been.Nicole explains how the master regulator called the endocannabinoid system works. It was discovered in the early 1990's when scientists were trying to understand the effects of cannabis on the body.If you are interested in having a private consultation with Nikole Myers, she can be reached at:Facebook and you can visit her web store for CBD products @ Green Compass Global.

Do you know how viral infections impact your body? Doni Wilson is joining me to talk about some of the things that can stress our bodies out from an internal perspective and more specifically, how viral infections can have an impact on our hormones. Dr. Doni Wilson is a naturopathic doctor, certified professional midwife, and certified nutrition specialist. She graduated from Bastyr University in 2000. Dr. Doni believes it is possible to be healthy, even when we are stressed. She experienced severe migraines for 25 years and was determined to find a way to resolve them. In the process of solving her migraines, Dr. Doni developed her Stress Recovery Protocol™ which identifies how stress uniquely affects each individual and then uses epigenetics to reoptimize health. She helps patients reverse challenging health conditions including fatigue, anxiety, autoimmunity, fertility and recurrent miscarriages, MTHFR, insomnia, as well as HPV and abnormal pap smears. Dr. Doni is frequently called upon to discuss her approach in the media, as well as at both public and professional events. She writes a blog you can find at DoctorDoni.com and her podcast is called How Humans Heal. We are talking about how stress activates viruses, the impact of imbalances in the microbiome, why a positive mindset is crucial to progress and more. Of course, the effects of viral infections are different for everyone, but we can all take positive action and have a positive mindset about it. Tune in to hear the details of all of this and how to win your body back! I would love to connect on Facebook or Instagram! Show notes available at www.drerinkinney.com/17
