In this podcast episode, Sharon and Phil delve into strategies for teaching struggling readers, particularly focusing on students in years three to six. They emphasise the importance of addressing the needs of struggling readers while also catering to the diverse range of all readers in the classroom. The discussion begins with Sharon highlighting the common questions teachers have about supporting struggling readers and the need for effective strategies to motivate students, facilitate growth, and access grade-level curriculum. They stress the importance of differentiation to meet the needs of all readers while ensuring growth and extension for each student.Sharon and Phil discuss the concept of reading as thinking and emphasise the need for intentional teaching during reading sessions. They introduce the idea of a Reading Workshop model, which involves setting clear intentions, modelling reading strategies through thinking aloud, and providing opportunities for students to practise independently. They also touch upon the significance of quality literature, the use of familiar texts from read-aloud sessions, and the incorporation of phrasing techniques to enhance comprehension. Throughout the discussion, Sharon and Phil underscore the importance of evidence-based approaches and the joy of teaching through thoughtful planning and engagement. The podcast concludes with a preview of upcoming topics, including developing book selection strategies, incorporating read-aloud sessions, and implementing paired reading activities to further support literacy development.TEACHIFIC RESOURCESReading Workshop resourcesJOIN TEACHIFIC NOW AND SAVE!If you join Teachific by June 1st you will lock in a $12 a month membership price. Reading workshop is an approach to reading instruction that falls within the parameters of whole language. It may seem more complicated, but once you understand the process and structure of reading workshop, a lot easier, and a lot more effective to implement. And it is multilevel and can be individualized to the specific needs and interests of your students.Reading workshop is not a method with step-by-step procedures that must be followed (with fidelity) like a recipe. Rather, it is an approach to reading instruction based on research and research-based theory related to how humans learn literacy.Reading workshop is not standardized. In a reading workshop, what you would see would be based on the teacher, students, age, level, etc. What works with one class doesn't always work with another. Thus, in each teacher's classroom, you might see different things. Reading workshop is structured, it's planned, there's very direct and explicit instruction based on individual students' needs, and it's strongly research-based, using real reading science, based on how real humans best learn.

Yesterday I recorded a podcast that was full of sarcasm and biting comments about an article that Jessica Winter wrote for the New Yorker where she used the term "Vibes-Based Literacy" to demean something she obviously didn't understand. Some have said I was a little harsh. In this podcast I explain why we (I) sometimes have to resort to sarcasm and other childish things.

This podcast examines an article written in The New Yorker called, 'The Rise and Fall of Vibes-Based Literacy'. It was written by Jessica Winter. She's an editor at The New Yorker, where she also writes about family and education. She is also, a clown. A clown, in literacy terms, is a person who thinks they know much about literacy, when in fact, their knowledge base is very shallow and disjointed. What makes a clown a clown is their clownery. This is when they write or speak as if they know a lot about things with which they actually know very little. We laugh at clowns. I laugh at Jessica Winter. I also laugh at Emily Hanford because they're clowns and they don't realize that they're clowns. They see themselves as great crusaders for the betterment of our “children's” education. Ha, ha, ha. Very funny. This is the first in a series of podcasts examining this article. In this podcast, I try to help Jessica Winter understand what Reading Workshop is.

How can teachers effectively understand where students are at in their literacy development? There's testing and running records, which have benefits and limitations, and the Reading Conference, which is a powerful process when done the right way. This is the art of conferring with kids, which is easier said than done. So how do we plan for a highly effective Reading Conference and what tools do we need?Start by asking: What is conferring? The Reading Conference is an assessment for teaching and learning. It's for turning learning into actions for students (Transformative Tracking). The teacher tries to learn as much as they can about the students, including:Reading interestsReading processes (monitoring strategies and cueing systems)Reading comprehensionReading fluencyReading vocabularyDecoding knowledgeThe teacher:Learns what makes the student a readerHelps them move forward into a range of reading textsUses it as an intentional part of their Independent ReadingUses it to inform teaching, especially Mini LessonsWhat actions are we looking for? There are five really good questions to ask (not all at once, but when appropriate): Use the Conferring With Reader Prompts sheet, which can be glued into their Reader's Notebook (aka Reading Journal). What strategies do they use to help them with their reading? What do they know about comprehension strategies? What do they do when they come to a word they don't recognise? How do they clarify the meaning of a word?Do they self correct to clarify the meaning? What are the highly effective elements of a Reading Conference?Planning. It's not just out of the blue, plan for it to happen every day - who you need to check in with (some more than others). Maybe have a day set for students. Know who to confer with when and what the focus is.Referring to previous goals and information. Reflecting on the student's goals, providing feedback to each child around their goal.Decide/Teach. Decide on a new strategy that will really help them. Then demonstrate to the student how that works in the student's text., and when they should use it. Have the student practise the new strategy with you to check on understanding.Goal Status. Ask the student to articulate the new strategy and record this as their goal. Record their current goal status - is it early, on the way, solid.Other: During Independent Reading they have their Reader's Notebook (aka Reading Journal) open so that they look at their goal whilst they are reading. The Reading Conference Notes page process is the same process as in a Mini Lesson.Tools to have on hand, or actions you need to take:A Good Reader Anchor Chart on display as a classThe Reading Conference Notes page in their Reader's Notebook (aka Reading Journal) to write notes about the student.Have the student articulate what they are going to do and have them practise doing it in front of youStudents should come to the Reading Conference with a lot as they have come across the same things in the Mini LessonThe teacher can also use Roving Conferences during Independent Reading. Each student has their goal/s in front of them in their Reader's Notebook, along with their Reading Log. In this way the teacher can check in on reading goals as students are reading and quickly catch up on most students.During the Reflection/Share Time of the Reading Workshop, it's a good time for students to look back on their goals and do a ‘Turn and Tell'. Then they are showing how they are using the strategy with a peer. So it's not just the teacher conferring - it's the students supporting each other in an ongoing way, every day.In other words have the children actively choose and use the strategies in the Reflection/ Share Time or whilst you are conferring with them. Model what this looks like in the Reading Conferences with them and in the Mini Lessons. In this way children have practised these actions with the teacher, with enlarged text or during the Read Aloud when the teacher and students are reading/ listening together. Then the Reading Conference helps the reader with further actions to take. The Reading Conference Notes page includes: (Picture or record of what child's doing):DateObservationDecide/TeachGoalGoal Status- early, on the way, solidWhat text they are usingEnjoy the episode! Resources mentioned in this episode:TEACHIFICConferring With Readers Prompts (new)Reading Conference Notes pageReading LogsGood Reader Anchor Chart (of Mini Lessons) Related:Reading Conference Prompts Flip Chart K-2Reading Conference Prompts Flip Chart 3-6Motivation to Read Profile - Survey for Students. The Motivation to Read Profile - ArticleBOOKTOPIACarribean Dozen - Poems from 13 Carribean Poets - My Name by James BerryDingle Dangle Scarecrow by Topp Twins, Jenny Coope JULY ONLINE WORKSHOP'Reading Like a Writer' Years 2-6with Sharon CallenJuly 5 and 6th 10-11.30am, Adelaide timeA specialised workshop for motivated years 2-6 teachers and leaders of literacy who want to equip themselves with the skills to use quality children's texts and a workshop model to develop students as powerful writers. Two 1.5 hour online workshops over two days in theJuly holidays, facilitated by Sharon and Phil CallenDiscount code (15% off) for Teacher's Toolkit for Literacy Facebook members.See more details and registration here: Connect with us!Join our community on Facebook for exclusive resources, Q and A, discussions, insights and more: https://www.facebook.com/groups/teacherstoolkitforliteracyGot any questions? "As a teacher, you don't want your students to resist reading. You want them to burn to read, be engaged and be impacted on a number of levels through the books they read and the way you teach. Speaking from personal experience, it starts by taking responsibility. And through learning more about the teaching of reading, investing in professional development and trying new things, we came to the Workshop Model," Sharon said. What is a Reading Workshop? The Workshop Model is generally described as having three components, built on the recognisable theory of the Gradual Release of Responsibility: Mini Lesson - focusing on the TO and WITHIndependent Learning - focusing on the BYReflection/Share - allows for the metacognition of what has been done, achieved, tried, applied, discovered, wondered etc.A Reading Workshop means using the Workshop Model and teaching through TEXT - a Big Book (or Shared Enlarged Text) and a Read Aloud, because I’m workshopping what I do as a reader so they can do as a reader. The whole 'workshop' implies activity, action, motivation to grow, try, explore, understand. So a Reading Workshop will have a 'Good Reader' Mini Lesson - that is, an opportunity for readers to get ‘just right’ information because as teacher I choose the Mini Lesson based on what my students are now ready for, what they need now, what I can bring to them and what we can try out together. What am I teaching readers in a Mini Lesson? Focus on one or orchestrate a few strategies/skills- solving words, monitoring and correcting, adjusting, fluency, summarising, inferring, predicting, making connections, synthesising, analysing, critiquing.Tools of the Mini Lesson: Knowledge of reading process, Big Books (Shared Enlarged Text)/Read Alouds/Literature, Anchor Charts.Independent Learning:Children read their selection of ‘just right’ books and practise the strategy. The teacher is conferring with readers - roving or one-on-one, hand holding those in the class who need a little more support before moving to Independent Reading.Tools of Independent Reading: Children’s box/wallet/bag of ‘just right’ books, Reader’s Notebook, Reading Calendar/Log.Reflection/Share: Students reflecting on what they have done as a reader - quick write in Reader’s Notebook, Turn and Tell - sharing, the whole class hearing what someone has done, talking about reading, writing about reading, being aware of processes/strategies, being a community.Tools of Reflection/Share: Reader’s Notebook, Anchor Chart, Partner TalkWhy is the Reading Workshop important? It’s important because it ensures that every child every day accesses the most important things readers need to be self motivated, self regulated, self directed, to be in charge of their reading - they need to be choosing what they read, they need to read with accuracy, they need to read with understanding, hear a fluent adult read, talk with peers about their reading, write about something personally meaningful.  Enjoy the discussion and let us know any of your thoughts!Connect with us!Join our community on Facebook for exclusive resources, Q and A, discussions, insights and more: https://www.facebook.com/groups/teacherstoolkitforliteracyGot any questions? Wouldn't it be nice if reading comprehension just magically happened?Spoiler Alert:  It doesn't!Although as adult readers we use these reading strategies to help us understand what we read without much effort, young readers need to be explicitly taught what the strategies are and how to use them. Over time, readers will learn to weave in and out of these strategies to fully comprehend the text that they're reading. At the upper elementary level, students have likely been introduced to all seven strategies at one point or another, and they probably see the strategies modeled for them. You're going to continue to do that but there is going to be times when you're going to need to isolate each strategy throughout the school year. Of course, once a strategy is taught, it will still need to be reviewed, written, and continuously practiced. Many teachers would agree that Making Connections is one of the easiest strategies for students to master, simply because students are likely already doing it without much effort.Making Connections is a critical reading strategy that helps students make meaning of what they're reading. When they make connections to the text that they're reading, it's going to help them make sense of what they're reading, help them retain the information better, and help them engage more with the text itself. In this episode, I will walk you through the basics of what the strategy is and how to effectively teach it to your students. Grab my FREE Making Connections Bookmark inside the Members Resource Library (Find it under the “Reading Resources” section)Check out these helpful learning tools for teaching making connections & reading strategies:LINKtivity Making ConnectionsLINKtivity Reading Strategy Bundle--------------------------------------For complete show notes and links to additional helpful resources, anchor texts for teaching the strategy and more, visit: classroomnook.com/podcast/42

Hello everyone! Last week, I sat down with the amazing Korey Collins and talked all about graphic novels, test prep, and the limits of BASAL reading programs. This week, I continue my talk with him and dive even deeper into what reading workshop looks like at the Ron Clark Academy! Korey Collins is a certified reading specialist and reading teacher at the Ron Clark Academy, and he brings the inspiration and heat for our discussion today. In this episode, we cover: Korey’s typical class and his view on engagement in a reading classroom  The power of conferencing with readers The power of choice in reading Why teachers should want to be master's of their craft …and MUCH MUCH MORE! You do NOT want to miss this episode!   This episode is sponsored by Heinemann—the leading publisher of professional books and resources for educators—and their professional book, 180 Days: Two Teachers and the Quest to Engage and Empower Adolescents by Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle. 180 Days was inspired by a teacher’s question: “How do you fit it all in?” To answer that question, Kelly and Penny spent an entire school year planning, teaching, and reflecting together. Through their collaboration, they identified the most essential everyday practices for helping middle and high school students become more engaged readers and writers. 180 Days maps out a year of the most powerful, engaging literacy practices. It provides insights about time management, teaching strategies, and how to effectively use both whole class and independent work. You’ll also find a library of accompanying videos that support each chapter. So, if you want to make every moment matter in your classroom, and empower your students to live more literate lives, visit Heinemann.com to download a sample from 180 Days or order your copy.

However, if you are on the move, this recording should do a good job as well! The visual helps drive the point home but the audio, independently, does not do a bad job either. Best to listen in with headphones :) About the episode- A recording of The Reading Workshop I hosted with author, Krishna Trilok on 3rd Feb, 2019. We had a good turnout and a very good discussion. The workshop was for people who care about reading but are struggling to incorporate it in their daily routine. At the workshop, we discussed why we read, busted some myths about reading, committed to build it as a habit and shared actionable advice to make reading convenient. We discussed audio books, how we should pick our next books, answered common questions and spoke about varying genres. My previous podcast with author, Krishna Trilok- Episode 9 (https://audioboom.com/posts/7113279-episode-9-writing-ar-rahman-books-writer-s-block-and-more-about-writing-feat-krishna-trilok)

Today on the podcast, whole class novels and choice. How do we have it both ways; reading literature deeply and also fostering joyful, independent learning? In Kate Robert's new book, A Novel Approach: Whole-Class Novels, Student Centered Teaching and Choice, Kate examines the troubles and triumphs of both whole-class novels and independent reading. She says we can find a student-centered, balanced approach to teaching reading. As an English teacher, Kate has seen whole-class novels build community, but she’s also seen too many kids struggle to read them—and either abandon reading altogether or become the reader who’s been left behind. Kate’s had better success getting kids to actually enjoy reading when they choose their own books within a workshop model. Many know Kate from her work with Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Project, but she’s been thinking about this topic since before then. For Kate, the idea started back when she observed the paradox her father, an english professor, struggled with in his teaching.A Novel Approach is accompanied by classroom videos where you can watch Kate put her ideas into practice with students. We’ll be previewing these videos on the Heinemann blog and on Kate’s website. To see the videos, read blogs from Kate, and to download a sample chapter, visit blog.Heinemann.com.
