Switching K-12 schools to reusables in their cafeterias is a focus for many in the reuse movement: it's a win-win-win for improving children's health, educating and empowering the community around sustainability issues, and providing an impressive ROI for school administrators. That said, no change is easy, and barriers such as up-front funding, dishwashing, and staffing are real challenges. Thankfully, Amber Schmidt from ReThink Disposable and Ben Schleifer from Center for Environmental Health have hands-on experience in surmounting these barriers, and in this discussion they share some key insights for getting reuse into schools.Enjoy this recording of the January Reuse Solutions Network meeting, and check out the resources below if you'd like to join the RSN yourself.Resources: Join the Reuse Solutions NetworkReThink DisposableCenter for Environmental HealthWashington Post: Most US schoolchildren toss their lunch trays every dayCase studies on reuse in schoolsMore Indisposable Podcast episodes about reuse in schoolsThe Indisposable Podcast is brought to you by Upstream, which is a non-governmental organization. Scott Hulet is a legendary writer, editor, and current Creative Director at The Surfer's Journal. He also has a new book titled Flow Violento: A Scott Hulet Omnibus, which is a compilation of more than thirty years of his writing about surfing, fishing, travel, food, music, and more. If you subscribe to my book recommendations email, then you'll already know how much I loved the book– Scott brings to life the cultures, waves, and landscapes of Latin America using his unique blend of insights, humor, and perfectly crafted prose. If you're a fan of travelogues, adventure tales, and cultural immersion, I know you'll enjoy “Flow Violento.” Scott was born and raised in southern California, and he's been writing for longer than he can even remember. Skating and surfing entered his life very early, as did travel to Mexico for surf trips. Through a deep commitment to the craft of writing and surfing, he's been able to build a successful career that combines both. But for all his success, there have also been some speedbumps along the way, including a string of health scares during his fifties that culminated with a very serious stroke. But after a ton of hard work and help from some inspiring medical professionals, Scott was able to make a full recovery– and refocus his efforts on writing, traveling, and surfing. I've been a huge fan of The Surfer's Journal and Scott for many, many years, so I was honored that he took the time to chat with me about his life, work, and the new book. I caught him just a few days before he took off to the Colombian Amazon for a fishing and research trip, and we had a fun chat about reading, writing, surfing, traveling, and more. Some of the topics include: his “hunting and gathering” approach to reading: some of his favorite childhood books; his first foundational surfing and traveling experiences; moving to Hawaii after high school; becoming a professional writer; the importance of approaching new cultures with respect; his health scares and lessons learned; his surprising thoughts on social media; rules for travel; and much more. A big thanks to Scott for the conversation and his decades of important work. And another big thanks to you for listening. In this episode of the Celebrate Kids podcast, Dr. Kathy explores the critical importance of reading in a world where technology often makes it feel obsolete. She emphasizes that reading helps us understand the larger narrative of life, particularly for children who may become lost in the fast-paced cultural moment. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable of generating fluent prose, Dr. Kathy warns that this could reduce the urgency for kids to develop their own writing skills. Instead, she encourages parents and educators to foster a love for reading and help children build their own ideas and understandings. Tune in for valuable insights on how to navigate these challenges and support children's development in an evolving digital landscape.

The “science of reading” is trending; but in order for professionals to engage in effective instruction, they need to understand that literacy also includes spelling and writing.Writing, spelling, and reading are interconnected, and the growing body of research continues to show us that these skills need to be taught explicitly. That's why I invited Dr. Jan Wasowicz to episode 176 of the De Facto Leaders podcast to discuss the Language Literacy Network (Link here: https://learningbydesign.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/TLLN_11x8.5.pdf); a framework she's created to help professionals better understand the connections between reading, writing, spelling, and language. Dr. Jan Wasowicz has more than 40 years of experience as a speech-language, literacy, and learning specialist working with students in a variety of educational settings, including public schools, Head Start programs, and private practice. Dr. Wasowicz is frequently invited to speak about best practices in literacy assessment and instruction and has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses, holding faculty positions at Northwestern University, Elmhurst College, Rush–Presbyterian–St. Luke's Medical Center, and Governors State University. Her credits include articles published in scholarly journals and U.S. patents for her inventions of literacy software programs including Earobics® and Spelling Performance Evaluation for Language and Literacy (SPELL-3). Dr. Wasowicz is an author of SPELL-Links to Reading & Writing and lead moderator of the SPELLTalk multi-disciplinary professional listserv. She also currently serves as an advisory board member of The Reading League of Illinois and an external consultant for Purdue University's inter-disciplinary initiative to strengthen teacher preparation using science-based methods. Dr. Wasowicz is an ASHA-certified, IL-licensed, and FL-licensed speech-language pathologist and an ASHA Board Certified Specialist in Child Language and she holds a professional educator license with multiple endorsements from the State Teacher Certification Board of Illinois. She is the founder, president and CEO of SPELL-Links | Learning By Design, Inc., and she maintains a small private practice in IL via tele-practice and in FL serving students with oral and written language disorders. This episode is part of a partnership that's happening between the BEpodcast network (Link here: https://bepodcast.network/) and Reading is Fundamental (RIF) (Link here: https://www.rif.org) in September for National Literacy Month. In this conversation, we discuss:✅Do we need a “writing rope” to supplement the “reading rope”? Or should reading, writing and language be woven in to one literacy framework?✅Pragmatics, executive functioning, and metalinguistic awareness: How do these components fit in to effective literacy instruction?✅Does working on reading improve spelling? Does working on spelling improve reading? ✅Should professionals work on linguistic skills in stages? When/how should professionals start working on morphology in elementary school?✅Defining “print to speech” and “speech to print” approaches (with specific examples). For many men, surviving the test of battle intensifies the joy of being alive. A provocative claim, perhaps, but to novelist Mark Helprin, simply a fact, and one that drives his new book about men who commit themselves fully both to service during wartime and to the women they love. Listen as Helprin tells EconTalk's Russ Roberts how his service in the Israeli and American militaries, his decades of journalism and outdoor adventure, and his long career in defense and foreign policy enabled him to write The Oceans and the Stars, a lyrical and thrilling look at leadership in the crucible of war--and at sea. They also discuss Helprin's writing routine and sources of inspiration, his analysis of Israel's real-life war against Iran and its proxies, and his thoughts on the state of American culture today.

The Dean's List with Host Dean Bowen – Paul Adams explores the shift from a virtues-based to a values-driven education. He argues that this change relativizes moral thinking, turning truth into mere opinion. In contrast, virtues form character and instill foundational qualities essential for society. Classical Christian Schools, emphasizing virtues, aim to restore these foundational principles in education.

Kate DiCamillo knows books. By far one of America's most successful children's writers (44 million books in print, translated into 41 languages), Kate joins us to talk about how reading – and reading aloud – has made her into the reader —and writer— she is today. We also learn — improbably — about how even sardine tins can be speakers of truth.
Today, we are exploring the power of reading and writing to make life feel better through Up Lit. Up Lit is a particular genre of reading that makes us feel good. The stories are hopeful and inspiring, even if the characters are going through hard things. Today, I'll take a deep dive into this micro-genre, quickly mention a list of books you're likely already familiar with that characterize this genre, take a deeper dive into three books I think you should add to your Spring TBR and end with 5 notebook prompts perfect for some uplifting writing experiences, too. If you were in middle school or high school in the last couple of decades, there's a good chance you were assigned Sherman's classic young adult novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, an epistolary novel with cartoon illustrations about a native teenage boy growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation who decides to attend a nearly all-white high school. The book is semi-autobiographical. Sherman grew up on that reservation in the 1970s and 80s and is a member of the Spokane Tribe. He is also arguably — or perhaps inarguably — the most significant native American writer of the last 30 years. Not only did The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian win the 2007 National Book Award for Young People's Literature, among other prizes, but his 2009 book War Dances won the 2010 Pen/Faulkner award for fiction, and his 1993 story collection The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven was adapted into the popular and highly acclaimed film Smoke Signals. Best of all (for me, anyway), Sherman is teaching a class for the brand-new Unspeakeasy School Of Thought. It's in a brand new genre: Writing Your Cancelation Story. In this conversation, Sherman talks about his career, his 2018 “cancelation event” (or at least its aftermath) and offers his thoughts on the state of writing and publishing, not least of all the recent incident wherein editors at the journal Guernica retracted an essay when the Twitter mob and its own staffers deemed it harmful, even “genocidal.” GUEST BIO Sherman Alexie is a poet, short story writer, novelist, essayist, memoirist, and filmmaker. He's published two dozen books, including The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which won the National Book Award for Young People's Literature and was listed by the American Library Association as the Most Banned and Challenged Book from 2010 to 2019. He's won the PEN-Faulkner and PEN-Malamud awards, and he wrote and co-produced the award-winning film Smoke Signals, which was based on his short story collection The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. Today we revisit a podcast from 2020 when my colleague Steph spoke with Mary Ehrenworth, Pablo Wolfe, and Marc Todd, co-authors of The Civically Engaged Classroom: Reading, Writing, and Speaking for Change. Their book offers strategies and lessons for facilitating civic engagement that you can use in your classroom immediately. They believe that the work of engaging young people isn't about giving students a voice: they already have their own voices. The work is about teaching them to use those voices with power.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This family friend has accomplished what I've always wanted to do. This educated queen has researched, Googled, learned from mistakes, enlisted help and finally self-published her first novel! The first book of the trilogy, The House by the Side of the Road, is available now where most books are sold.Listen to Jean discuss her professional experience with understanding reading and the common learning disorder, Dyslexia. Jean advises on the concept of “reading to learn” and “learning to read,” and how this background fed into the reasoning behind publishing a book at age 67. “If other people can do it, why can't I?” For three weeks Jean locked herself in a Milwaukee vacation rental to do nothing but walk her dogs and write. Using her local book club to review and her publishing company to edit, Jean created a print-on-demand piece of fiction for $6,000 from the ground up. If it seemed like England's The Sundays came out of nowhere in the early 1990s it's because, well, they sorta did. The dreampop quartet didn't start out with the idea of being major music stars -- they just wanted to have a little fun and make some music. But there were a couple problems with this: Harriet Wheeler and David Gavurin. Harriet's lilting, songbird voice made her one of the most distinctive female voices in pop music; and the gorgeous guitar work by David made The Sundays alternative rock gold. Their 1990 debut, "Reading, Writing and Arithmetic," was released in 1990 -- less than two years after they formed. "Here's Where the Story Ends" made them massive indie stars in the United States, while "Can't Be Sure" (their first single) was lauded in the UK. The Sundays would go on to create two more beautiful albums before settling into a more normal life. They are still missed.
