How to Address The Powers: Flee, Fake, Fix, or be Faithful? (Steve Shaw)

Steve Shaw picks up where John Crawshaw left us at church camp. John got us thinking about "The Powers" that Paul introduces in Ephesians. Steve reminds us that These Powers are part of the created order, and that they have a proper place in creation, under Christ, the head. And when we see them out of order in the world around us, our first port of call is not fervent prayer, nor frantic action, but submission to Christ. That submission will then help us in the taking our part in the reordering of creation to which Christ calls us. Readings: Ephesians 1.15-2.10 Ephesians 6.10-18

This week we are picking a few passages from among Paul's four letters – Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians and Colossians for our reflections. Paul's passion is for the church, the new Christians in these communities, to grow, become more like Jesus. Yesterday we thought about the famous passage in Galatians that encourage us to choose to allow the Spirit to produce his fruit in our lives, to win out over the acts of our fallen human nature.   We are to ‘walk in the Spirit' – allowing his power to produce the fruit that we see in the life of Jesus. Today we are moving onto a Passage in Ephesians and thinking about identity  -

Challenging BoundariesThis week we are thinking about the boundaries that God sets for our well-being and the well-being of all of His creation. Each boundary invites us to ask an important question. People of all ages like to challenge boundaries and mostly it's a fairly harmless activity. The baby who throws the dummy out of the pram; the young person who comes home 10 minutes later than agreed; the working person who challenges the way a company acts; the senior who refuses to give in to the obvious – and so it goes on. And of course that's all natural and helps us to maintain that sense of independence and thinking for ourselves. But there is a more serious side.

All we can do is put ourselves in the position to receive. This command is a continuous command, we are exhorted to always be filled with Holy Spirit.

25 July 2021 - Ninth Sunday After Pentecost - The writer of John tells us that Passover was near when Jesus sat on a mountain to teach and then feed the 5,000. John puts Jesus squarely in the context of Sinai and the Exodus, connecting Jesus with the Prophet Like Moses. God, in the Exodus, moves Israel from death to life so that he can dwell with his people. Likewise, Jesus performs miracles to show that the Kingdom of God is breaking in on earth, moving those who trust in him from death to life and into relationship with God the Father. 3 January 2020 - On the Second Sunday of Christmas, Rev. David Pileggi says the voice of the Word made flesh that “in the beginning” commanded light to shine in the darkness and created life now calls each one of us into the ultimate reality of a God who wants to dwell with us and to live in us. Sadly, many who affirm the Incarnation, the divinity of Jesus and more have allowed these theological truths to become a substitute for the presence of the living God in our lives. Liz Bajema frames a discussion about the ambiguous relationship between religion and violence using examples from the bible and the slave rebellion of Nate Turner. Liz is a longtime member of Root and Branch and spends her days conducting experiments on unsuspecting elements from the periodic table (a chemist as it were).Readings:Ephesians 6:10-2010Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. 11Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. 15As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. 16With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints.19Pray also for me, so that when I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak. The Peaceful Shepherdby Robert FrostIf heaven were to do again,And on the pasture bars,I leaned to line the figures inBetween the dotted starts,I should be tempted to forget,I fear, the Crown of Rule,The Scales of Trade, the Cross of Faith,As hardly worth renewal. For these have governed in our lives,And see how men have warred. The Cross, the Crown, the Scales may allAs well have been the Sword.
