How much do you enjoy your life? Do you feel as if your emotions have flatlined? In perimenopause, we often feel low, not quite like ourselves, even if there is nothing fundamentally wrong. We have supportive partners and friends, great kids, and a job we enjoy and yet life feels dull and grey. Can you relate? This is anhedonia – a word only a few of us have heard of but one that explains why so many of us feel we are sleepwalking through life. Anhedonia is from the Greek word for 'without pleasure' and describes a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. It explains why many of us spend our lives in a fog, feeling neither happy nor sad, just not very much at all. This week my guest is British author and journalist Tanith Carey who joins me to talk about the missing grey area in mental health - blah- where too many mid-life women are living their lives.Great news is that midlife women don't have to accept this as the status quo. Blah has a range of biological and environmental reasons that can be tackled to live up to your potential. Simple awareness that 'blah' is 'a thing' is the first step to addressing through a range of approaches and putting together a toolbox of resources that works for you. With the help of world-leading experts and by digging into the latest research, Tanith shows you how your brain's dopamine reward system works and provides strategies to help you bring colour back into your life. Specifically, we dive into:* How did Tanith come across anhedonia - and why most of us haven't heard about it?* How did she discover a way out of it - and what has it meant in her life?* How other mid-life women find their reasons for blah - and find a way out of it.This is the episode that will teach you how to kickstart your feel-good chemicals and start loving life again. You can connect with Tanith on Instagram @no_more_blah_book, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn on @tanithcarey Get full access to Heart of Menopause at clarissakristjansson.substack.com/subscribe

In your mothering journey, which books from children's classic literature do you turn to for help? That one made me stop and think for a while. Of course, there are plenty of “how to” books for mothering. However, I had never considered looking back at my childhood stories... until now!As moms, we face so many struggles and fears. Is what we're doing enough? How will our kids turn out? As we face these fears, we wonder what we can do.My guest on this episode is Jennifer Pepito, a writer, and mother of seven! Despite her desire to raise a strong family, fear stole her joy as a mother. Likewise, she has asked herself whether what she was doing was the right thing for her children. Then, she discovered her joy in an unexpected place! It was in the pages of classic literature that she read aloud to her children every day. Through these stories, she restored the wonder of childhood to both herself and her children. As Jennifer explains in her book, Mothering by the Book, we can use those lessons to overcome our fears.Jennifer will share lessons from three of my favorite classics:Focusing on the positive from: Little House on the Prairie SeriesSpeaking Life to those around you from: Charlotte's WebTaking time to reflect from: Pride & Prejudice "Becoming a better, happier mom starts with the stories you tell your kids.”

Books are incredibly powerful. We know this and yet as moms we don't always make time to read. The world tells us that there is no time for anything, ever. And in the same breath often tells us what to do, what to read, how to think, how to mother…and a lot of that messaging leaves us feeling fearful, unworthy, and like we aren't doing enough. What if there was a way to step off the hamster wheel of modern motherhood and find ourselves feeling more whole, more worthy, and like we're getting it right? And what if the secret to that was found in reading more books? Today's conversation with Jennifer Pepito is so enlightening. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I am a changed person, a changed mother, and I believe a better mother because I read books. Namely the books of the authors I have interviewed here on the podcast, including Jennifer's book Mothering by the Book: The Power of Reading Aloud to Overcome Fear and Recapture Joy. Jennifer is here to expand our book lists and shine a light on our motherhood journeys with deep, mature insights, ideas for battling comparison and other daily fears that arise in our mama hearts. Jennifer's Bio: Jennifer Pepito is the author of Mothering by the Book and the founder of The Peaceful Press (http://thepeacefulpress.com). Jennifer is on a mission to help moms overcome fear and love their life, and her homeschool curriculum empowers this through heroic stories, heartwarming poetry, and engaging life skills development. Her resources help create joyful memories among families, which leads to deeper connections and lasting relationships. Jennifer's writing has been featured in several online and print journals, including Wild and Free, Commonplace Quarterly, and Home Educating Family. She's a Wild and Free podcast host and has made guest appearances on popular podcasts such as 1000 Hours Outside, At Home with Sally, and Charlotte Mason Poetry. The best kind of mentor for motherhood is a real life one, but sometimes that's just not possible. When needed, a book can be a great alternative. Fortunately, we've had Titus 2 examples and the wisdom of other trusted women in our lives because we've always surrounded ourselves with good books. Voices of encouragement, discipleship, and practical help have rung out to us from these pages and have helped shape our day-to-day faithfulness to our husbands, our children, our ministry commitments, our walk with the Lord…pretty much every area of our lives! In today's episode, Jamie Erickson and September McCarthy speak with Jennifer Pepito, author of Mothering By the Book: the Power in Reading Aloud to Overcome Fear and Recapture Joy. They discuss the importance of reading aloud to your kids, making time for personal reading in the busyness of our day, and options for the mom who isn't a reader. We'd love to know what books have been meaningful to you. Which ones do you find yourself going back to again and again for wisdom, for spiritual discipleship, for practical advice? The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear. Unfortunately, for many, the Christmas season can be void of joy. In this sermon, we look to Mary, the mother of Jesus, and learn how to recapture joy during difficult times.
Nearly every mother experiences fear throughout her parenting journey. As Jennifer and I discuss in this episode, there are often new fears that emerge at every stage of parenthood. We may fear failing our kids or fear for their safety, but the reality is that fear creates a suffocating environment in our homes. As a long-time homeschooling mother of seven, Jennifer shares her journey of recognizing the impact of fear on her family and how she used the power of story to overcome it. This is such a rich, grace-filled conversation meant to encourage you as you fight fear and embrace joy in your mothering. In this episode, we cover: How fears in motherhood change from season to season The most common sources of our fears as mothers Transforming our families by exchanging the power of fear for the power of joy Using the power of story of overcome fears The gifts we give our children by prioritizing reading aloud as a family Creating an environment in which our kids can pursue their unique interests Reconnecting to our own passions and interests in the midst of mothering How mothers can model a life of joy in our homes What to read and how to create time for reading aloud View full show notes and transcript on the blog + watch this episode on YouTube. What fear pops up in your parenting again and again? Maybe it's, “how do I teach my kids that they can do hard things in a loving way?” or, “what if my kids make bad decisions?” or “what if I'm a bad mom?” These fears can feel overwhelming and that the answers to them are complicated. My guest this week gives us an unexpected ally in overcoming the fears that grip us as moms - reading aloud. It sounds almost too simple, but author and mom of 7, Jennifer Pepito, shows us that the stories we share with our kids can help them navigate some of the tougher experiences with life. By exposing our kids to character building stories we can infuse them with perspective and thoughtfulness as they face life's difficult situations. She also encourages us that forgiveness can be an avenue to freedom from fear in our lives and specifically our parenting. TRIGGER WARNING: This episode briefly mentions suicide. I was delighted when a friend introduced me to Episode 24's guest, Cindy Villanueva. We were both unwed teen moms who bounced back from that failure only to end up with divorce, domestic violence, and career setbacks as part of our stories. In her memoir, Don't Fight Mad, a Blackbelt's Quest to Recapture Joy, Cindy shares how she transformed life's challenges into gifts of resilience and strength. Like me, Cindy bounced back from her hardships as a teen mom. She persevered in getting her education, pursued her career, and successfully raised her children. We both learned that we aren't our failures. And, thanks to our faith, we've also learned that we aren't what we've accomplished. Our identities are more than our degrees, careers, and even our children. Tune in to learn more from her story! Thank you everyone for following and for leaving a rating or review. I love you!
