A prayer based on Psalm 23:1-2. My son shared how grateful he was that a shepherd would not forget his sheep even when it was lost. His vivid explanation of the shepherd's relentless search, care, and comfort for his sheep touched a soft place in my son's heart as he was struggling with his own recent behavior issues and felt like he kept getting stuck in his efforts to find his way back to his time with the Lord. What a true shepherd we have who comforts and cares for us even when we wander. How do I lead my children to the Good Shepherd who can care for them like only a true shepherd can? Will I intentionally seek rest, allowing him to meet all my desires and be enough that my soul is satisfied? I tell my kids this until the day they leave the home. When we become disgruntled over petty things like weather, fairness, or material possessions, our remembrance of what true blessings are has slipped far from our focus. We use the word blessings so freely and loosely in our culture today, and yet do we truly understand what it means to live the blessed life? Perhaps we overcomplicate the Christian life and make it more about comfort and blessings for our needs or what we deserve. When was the last time you thought about what it truly means to be blessed? Hormones affect every part of our mental, emotional and physical health and are often ignored by the professionals we see for our healthcare support. Medication for anxiety or pill/devices to control bleeding are often a first resort to fix symptoms of an imbalance but as you will hear in todays discussion, there is a better way and it starts with acknowledging that something feels "off" with our body and then taking the time to be educated. Balancing hormones requires patience but the results can be life changing. My guest today is September McCarthy, who joined me here for the first time back in February of 2020 and she is sharing with us her personal, eye opening experience with hormonal imbalance. She speaks openly about the realization that imbalanced hormones had been affecting her life for a long time but lack of medical support and education had prevented her from getting the testing that would have benefited her greatly. September shares with us the steps she took towards healing and the way she is teaching her daughters to have a greater awareness than she did. Amazing. What an important topic to discuss with all of the women in our life! An important note: Neither September nor I are medical professionals, however we do believe in the importance of this conversation and hope to encourage you to seek hormonal testing if anything you hear today resonates. Motherhood is full and glorious - but also filled with trials and suffering. If we don't understand the purpose of our motherhood, we will get lost in everyday difficulties and no way to reclaim perspective.  That's what I discuss today with September McCarthy, mother of 10 and homeschool mama. She has a unique perspective of generational motherhood with children spanning from age 28 to 8 years old. She has grandchildren and children of her own still in her home, affording her the perspective of a multi-generational mother and seeing how unique and beautiful our purpose is in God's kingdom. She shares so much wisdom and encouragement for those of us in the trenches. September is the author of [Why] Motherhood Matters and is talking with us today about [Why] Homeschooling Matters. Her top reasons for choosing to homeschool her children are to help them:   Know their identity Grow in character Develop strong relationships Discover their mission for life In today’s conversation we talk a lot about all four of these things, but my main takeaway had to do with teaching my children about good and Godly character traits. I don’t want to simply discipline my children for the times they lack character. I want to train my children to grow in character. September’s “Character Matters” cards and posters are valuable resources to help us do just that!

As an author, event planner, teacher, wife, mom of 10 and grandmother to 2, September McCarthy has plenty to fill her days. She relates to the universal exhaustion on our mom souls–the beating ourselves up and the fighting for joy.  September has so much wisdom to share from what God has taught her in seasons of busyness and motherhood in different stages. Listen as we go through questions from GCM listeners on motherhood topics including finding joy in the hard times, the value of rest and bringing your children alongside you in your work as a mom. As moms we are going to be tired. Might as well be tired over the things that bring you joy. And choose those things. What we chat about: September’s motherhood story including miscarriages & infant loss.  Answers to questions from moms like you. Focusing less on feeling the joy in your days and more on gratitude. When you are in the busy seasons of life, be cautious what you take on. Ask yourself, do I need to do this? Not letting our “fear of missing out” for children direct our decisions.  The importance of guarding our thoughts and taking negative thoughts captive. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”  Romans 12:2 There is value and strength in rest and doing what God wants for your body. Find one to two moms who can help you when you need it. Let go of feeling like you need to everything well and enjoy it. Bringing your kids into you work as a mom and encouraging them to work as a team. Tips on teaching character to kids who want your attention all the time. I don’t know about you, but how I rate myself in the “mom department” varies greatly day by day, minute by minute. A wave of feeling pretty awesome can be quickly followed by feelings of failure. When I’m at a low point, it is nice to call a mom with older children and get encouragement, perspective and wisdom. Because sometimes my feelings are based on a true problem and I need a little guidance on how to approach my boys differently. Sometimes my feelings are based on lies and I need a little truth-telling to get my eyes refocused. For today’s podcast I’ve invited Leslie Johnson (SurseeGal.com) back for a group pep talk. Leslie is the lovely mom to four grown boys. She speaks life and truth. I’m so thankful for her consistent investment in my mothering. I wanted y’all to listen in on one of our typical conversations. Get a taste of what a phone call would sound like (except in this case we know you are listening and may even refer to you as “listeners”…besides that). And just like a real phone call with Leslie, I’m all over the board asking a variety of questions. Today we cover three main topics (with the occasional rabbit trail…): Tips for the mom who gets angry with her kids (amen.) Ideas for reading aloud books–the “when”, “where”, “how”, and “what” How to handle the feeling of everyone needing you at once Show Notes: September McCarthy-Hope for the Struggling Mom Podcast Kat Lee’s interview with Chrystal Evans Hurst Life in a Medieval Castle and Village Coloring Book (Dover History Coloring Book)(after our talk about Dover coloring books, I realized I’ve bought lots of these from Whole Earth Provision.
