Home schooling mom of 10, podcaster, author of 2 beloved books and pickleball champion.  One of the things I love about Abbie is that she is vocal about her how much she loves spending time with her teens. Like me, she really enjoys the teen years and has made it a bit of her personal mission to remind the mamas with littles that the goodness doesn't stop the moment their kids hit puberty. So in this episode Abbie and I talk about all things having teens. We talk about parenting with expectant hope. That means determining that we'll love our kids through their whole life, not just when they are cute and cuddly babies. We discuss ways to connect with our teens and how that starts by enjoying being with our kids when they are little and then continuing that as they grow. One of the things our kids will face as they grow up, and especially in the teen years is exposure to pornography. Abbie and I talk about how we can prepare our kids for growing up in a porn saturated world and also share with them about God's good plan for sex. This part of our conversation was really helpful and honestly so powerful. I just know you'll get a lot from it! And friends, if you are looking for more information on this topic, and still haven't gotten my new book, It's Time to Talk to Your Kids About Porn, this is your sign to get the book! It's time!  Anxiety and depression are rampant in our culture today, particularly among the rising generation. But while life can be hard, it's critical not to think of things that are difficult as necessarily being bad. That's just some of the wisdom author and mommy blogger Abbie Halberstadt shares with Dr. Jeff Myers, unpacking the truths from her book, Hard Is Not the Same Thing as Bad. Halberstadt, a homeschooling mom to 11 children, including two sets of twins, explains the importance of not letting our emotions rule our behavior in any pursuit, from raising kids, to going to school, to doing our jobs. For many of us, motherhood is anything but easy. From blowouts, to tantrums, learning difficulties, health problems, constant noise, conflict inside and outside our homes --the possibilities for us to feel like we are in an impossible season are endless. Sometimes this feeling of “hard” can feel completely overwhelming. And the truth is that some of the demands of modern parenting that feel really hard are signs that something actually is wrong.  When things are hard and overwhelming it is a good idea to wisely evaluate what is causing the "hard." But is hard always a negative thing? Or could challenging circumstances actually be a gift in disguise? In what ways has worldly thinking colored the way Christians talk about the “hard” aspects of parenting? Listen in to a helpful conversation with Abbie Halberstadt, Bible believing mom to ten and author of M is for Mama and Hard is Not the Same Thing as Bad about evaluating hard situations and allowing the Lord to refresh our mindset.

In this inspiring episode of 1000 Hours Outside, we sit down with the insightful author, Abbie Halberstadt, to explore the transformative journey of parenting as a powerful avenue for personal growth. Abbie shares her wisdom and experiences, dispelling common misconceptions about parenthood and revealing the profound life lessons hidden within the chaos. Abbie discusses her initial struggle with the assumption that parents must be naturally patient and hyper-organized. She reminds us that having it all together before tackling the challenges of parenthood is a rare feat and often not the way life unfolds. The conversation delves into her toughest years as a mother when she had two young children, highlighting the unique difficulties of toddlerhood. One of the key takeaways is the notion that if we avoid facing parenting challenges, we risk stagnation. Abbie emphasizes that we are not victims; instead, we can actively engage with the ups and downs of parenthood to grow as individuals. As the conversation progresses, Abbie discusses the importance of mom friendships. She encourages listeners to be the kind of friend they want to attract and reminds us that building friendships as parents often requires proactive efforts. Abbie shares insights on how idealizing pre-kid friendships can limit opportunities for meaningful connections with fellow parents. Throughout the episode, Abbie reflects on the messages she receives from parents, with a particular focus on the challenges of dealing with toddlers. Finally, she provides valuable advice: never base life decisions solely on the difficulties of the current season. In this episode, we cover: All about Abbie's 45 day trip to Europe with her 10 kids Feeling less alone in motherhood and moving forward out of the difficult places Finding freedom from the shame of not being able to keep up with everything on your plate Shifting your mindset around being interrupted by kids when trying to get things done Adjusting your expectations about what your house should look like Taking appropriate responsibility in parenting without succumbing to fear and control Keeping perspective about your capacity in different seasons of motherhood Avoiding the trap of comparing yourself to what everyone else is doing View full show notes on the blog + watch this episode on YouTube. Returning guest, Abbie Halberstadt, sits down with E.J. to talk about all things Biblical motherhood. Abbie's first book, M is for Mama, laid the foundation for the book that has been on her heart and soul for many years. That book, Hard Is Not the Same Thing as Bad, is what every mama needs as they desire to see their children not as burdens (culture) but as blessings from the Lord. Is it easy to mother well? No. But, is it worth the effort? 1000x yes!! And, the best part is, we can do it together! Watch this 1-minute intro video for the book - it's SO GOOD Pre-order HINTSTAB now! Hard≠Bad“Why me, Lord?”Amid the toddler tantrums, the mealtime melees, and the backseat blowups, have you found yourself asking God that same question? Maybe even screaming it into a couch pillow? You're not alone.Your most trying moments as a parent can quickly spiral into discouragement, hopelessness, and sometimes even resentment toward God or your family—partly because our culture has conditioned us to believe that anything this hard can't possibly be good for us.Abbie Halberstadt, author of the bestselling M is for Mama, shares scriptural wisdom and lessons learned from her own challenges as a mama of ten to help shift your perspective on the hardships of parenting and of life, in general. When you begin to see struggles as a necessary part of God's plan for your spiritual growth, you can discover supernatural peace and purpose, even when you're down in the deepest trenches of parenthood.

Welcome to the Love Where You Are podcast!  In today's episode I am joined with Abbie Halberstadt. Abbie is a busy full time homeschooling mom with ten kiddos and one amazing husband. Blogger and author of the book M is for Mama, Abbie is passionate about helping mamas claim their identities and find simple, doable rhythms for their days that allow them to create an environment of realistic joy and peace.  In today's conversation, Somer and Abbie dive into the battle we face as mothers in our culture, how there is a disdain towards taking care of your kids and building a home, how being a mother somehow robs us from our life or that doing the job of a mom like changing diapers and cleaning up cheerios, is somehow less than. Abbie also covers the motherhood martyrdom and mom guilt, as well as the angry mom, ways to avoid these common pitfalls and how to realize both the joy and weight of being a mom. There is a lot to unpack! Thank you for being here today. Now, let's dive into the conversation!  You can connect with Abbie through Facebook, Instagram, and her website.  You can also order her new book!    FAVORITE TAKE-AWAYS:  -There is a false narrative in our culture is that motherhood is something which gets in our way, takes us away from living our life.  -We are battling a culture of busyness and motherhood martyrdom.  -Lie: Just existing as a mom is enough. You know there are plenty of moms who weren't good moms. It takes work and effort to be a good mom but you are capable.   -There is a big difference between "mom guilt", lies from the enemy, and the Holy Spirit convicting you.    REMEMBER: -Satan has come to destroy families, the heart of spirituality. He is divorcing the concept of marriage and sex away from family, motherhood, and raising children as God designed.   -There is a huge lack of Biblical literacy in America right now, despite the fact there is constant bombardment of information around us. Getting in the word is the best way to know how God wants us to live our lives!  -There are a lot of things labeled as "self care" that are not fulfilling. Yes, take care of yourself, but don't constantly pursue that self-care like an idol above caring for your home. Instead build an infrastructure for your family to keep everyone happy and functioning.    SCRIPTURE:  Galatians 6:9 Connect with Somer!  Stay connected to Somer and the Love Where You Are podcast through her Facebook & Instagram! I grew up knowing the passage about training up a child in the way he should go and was blessed with a mom who prioritized training us in that way.  Even still, that passage took on a different level of importance and challenge for me when God gave me my own children.  To say I believe something to be true is one thing, but to put that value into practice day in and day out requires a completely different level of commitment!I have invited Abbie Halberstadt to join me for this conversation because she is passionate about fighting against the acceptance of mediocrity in the high calling of motherhood.  Abbie has 10 children between the ages of 2 and 16 years old and has been married for 17 years.  Abbie is the author of "M is for Mama: A Rebellion Against Mediocre Motherhood" .  This book is rich with Biblical truth and will encourage any Christian mom in their motherhood journey. Motherhood is hard sometimes, but hard does not equal bad. We are all striving to be the best Mama to our children, but the journey in learning how to be a biblical mother is not always clear, especially in a world that devalues the duties the role brings and indulges the fleshly desires we must turn away from. Join Angie (Mother to nine) and Abbie (Mother to ten) as they discuss a couple of the most challenging aspects of motherhood that they have experienced. A little hint, they talk about some riveting topics such as “Self-Care vs Soul-Care”, How to Find a Titus 2 Mentor and their experiences, as well as the “Gentleness Challenge” Abbie talks about in her book, “M is for Mama.” In case you are wondering, we talk in-depth about the difference between the “Gentle Parenting” movement of today and what God's Word calls us to as Biblical Women to be gentle mothers because they are NOT the same thing.

If you've ever found yourself asking, “Why me, Lord?” today's podcast guest will resonate with you.  Abbie Halberstadt, (homeschooling) Mom to 10…with two sets of twins in the mix – understands toddler tantrums, mealtime melees, and the backseat blowups. Yet, she has lived out a message that is sure to encourage you.  Learning the difference between “just making it” and Christlike parenting has changed everything for Abbie, and she wants to help other moms find the good…even in the hard! In today's conversation I ask Abbie more about her life – what led to book writing, and some of the highlights from her recent book, “Hard is Not the Same as Bad”.
