Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The Standard Analogy, published by Zack M Davis on June 3, 2024 on LessWrong. [Scene: a suburban house, a minute after the conclusion of "And All the Shoggoths Merely Players". Doomimir returns with his package, which he places by the door, and turns his attention to Simplicia, who has been waiting for him.] Simplicia: Right. To recap for [coughs] no one in particular, when we left off [pointedly, to the audience] one minute ago, Doomimir Doomovitch, you were expressing confidence that approaches to aligning artificial general intelligence within the current paradigm were almost certain to fail. You don't think that the apparent tractability of getting contemporary generative AI techniques to do what humans want bears on that question. But you did say you have empirical evidence for your view, which I'm excited to hear about! Doomimir: Indeed, Simplicia Optimistovna. My empirical evidence is the example of the evolution of human intelligence. You see, humans were optimized for one thing only: inclusive genetic fitness [Simplicia turns to the audience and makes a face.] Doomimir: [annoyed] What? Simplicia: When you said you had empirical evidence, I thought you meant empirical evidence about AI, not the same analogy to an unrelated field that I've been hearing for the last fifteen years. I was hoping for, you know, ArXiv papers about SGD's inductive biases, or online regret bounds, or singular learning theory ... something, anything at all, from this century, that engages with what we've learned from the experience of actually building artificial minds. Doomimir: That's one of the many things you Earthlings refuse to understand. You didn't build that. Simplicia: What? Doomimir: The capabilities advances that your civilization's AI guys have been turning out these days haven't come from a deeper understanding of cognition, but by improvements to generic optimization methods, fueled with ever-increasing investments in compute. Deep learning not only isn't a science, it isn't even an engineering discipline in the traditional sense: the opacity of the artifacts it produces has no analogue among bridge or engine designs. In effect, all the object-level engineering work is being done by gradient descent. The autogenocidal maniac Richard Sutton calls this the bitter lesson, and attributes the field's slowness to embrace it to ego and recalcitrance on the part of practitioners. But in accordance with the dictum to feel fully the emotion that fits the facts, I think bitterness is appropriate. It makes sense to be bitter about the shortsighted adoption of a fundamentally unalignable paradigm on the basis of its immediate performance, when a saner world would notice the glaring foreseeable difficulties and coordinate on doing Something Else Which Is Not That. Simplicia: I don't think that's quite the correct reading of the bitter lesson. Sutton is advocating general methods that scale with compute, as contrasted to hand-coding human domain knowledge, but that doesn't mean that we're ignorant of what those general methods are doing. One of the examples Sutton gives is computer chess, where minimax search with optimizations like α-β pruning prevailed over trying to explicitly encode what human grandmasters know about the game. But that seems fine. Writing a program that thinks about tactics the way humans do rather than letting tactical play emerge from searching the game tree would be a lot more work for less than no benefit. A broadly similar moral could apply to using deep learning to approximate complicated functions between data distributions: we specify the training distribution, and the details of fitting it are delegated to a network architecture with the appropriate invariances: convolutional nets for processing image data, transformers for variable-length sequences. Ther...

Electric cars are the future of motoring, or so we are told, but today's Cunningcast guests don't agree. In fact, Hugo Spowers of Riversimple thinks hydrogen is the future and he's designing hydrogen powered cars to prove it. Together with experienced car broadcaster Richard Sutton, they give Tony the low down on the past, present and their vision for the future of car engineering and sustainability. Hosted by Si Tony RobinsonX | InstagramWithHugo Spowers Chief engineer and founder of Riversimple, who are pioneering the next generation of zero emission vehicles. Before I recap Season 1 of Grateful Dad & Friends and provide a brief glimpse of Season 2, it may prudent to share why I launched this podcast in the first place. The purpose of GD&F is to be a gift.  A gift to my guests, and a gift to their friends and family.  Let me explain….A few years back, on my way to Lake Champlain, I was driving with my parents and I had an opportunity to “interview” my father about his 35-year experience in the family business.  I recorded that conversation on Voice Memos on my iPhone and the audio quality is mediocre at best but the content was gold, and having Dad's voice will forever be timeless, and priceless.  I wish I had recorded more of those conversations. And when I lost my brother, Tom, among a whole host of emotions that one would have after losing their hero, I realized that the few voicemails that Tom left for me in the weeks leading up to his untimely death, would be some of the few treasures that I have hearing Tom's voice.  I wish I had more of those treasures. My hope is that the conversations that take place on GD&F will be a gift to those who know and love each of the guests that I am lucky to call my family and my friends  Season 1 guests ranging from neighbors, including my inaugural guest Mr. Fred Weiss… and former clients, such as Cary Crane… both of which went to the legendary '72 shows at the Academy of Music, the '73 Summer Jam at Watkins Glen and '77 at Englishtown Raceway.David McQuaid, one of my newer friends, who tours the country catching shows with his family in his retro-decked out school bus, appropriately named Sugaree, recapped some of his tales from the golden road and an encounter with NBA legend and lifelong Deadhead, Bill Walton. We spoke with Cornell Bouse, an attorney and property owner by day and lead singer by night.  We learned about his thoughts and views about Elvis, and among other topics, his plans and evolving wake-list for his own funeral. We sat down with Ted Bahr, collector of some of the country's most vintage psychedelic posters proudly displayed at The Bahr Gallery.I introduced my friend, Rob Diestel, aka Monkey Man and we learned about his 20-year passion project, a musical that he wrote called Growin' Up Asbury Park, weaving in characters from Bruce Springsteen's most influential ballads. We spent time w/ my sister, Kathy Staib, and our mutual friend Rainer “TITAN” Jenss and heard about how and when they got on the bus and how Rainer is facing a life-threatening disease with the ultimate in courage, in class, and in grace. We talked music and a little shop talk with my nephew/business partner, TJ Staib and my COO, John Gulino and shared what we think we do well and what we could probably do better at our five-generation, family label printing business. The Ryan brothers, founding members of indie rock band The Bogmen, spent some time with me and painted the picture of the evolution of their music and the related cultlike following. We went back to the late 60's and early 70's with Richard Sutton, who shared his experiences living in communes and who was in the heart of the scene leading up to the infamous fundraiser concert that the Grateful Dead performed to save the Springfield Creamery from extinction.Rob Barraco, keyboardist for Dark Star Orchestra, was kind enough to take the time to share his journey from wedding band performer to joining Jeff Matson in the Zen Tricksters, and then The Other Ones, The Dead, Phil & Friends, and ultimately Dark Star Orchestra.  We learned what life is like on the DSO tour bus and what's on tap in 2024 for the band.Last but certainly not least, the four most special women in my life – my wife Margaret aka Margs, and our daughters Hannah, Hope

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: My cover story in Jacobin on AI capitalism and the x-risk debates, published by Garrison on February 13, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Google cofounder Larry Page thinks superintelligent AI is "just the next step in evolution." In fact, Page, who's worth about $120 billion, has reportedly argued that efforts to prevent AI-driven extinction and protect human consciousness are "speciesist" and " sentimental nonsense." In July, former Google DeepMind senior scientist Richard Sutton - one of the pioneers of reinforcement learning, a major subfield of AI said that the technology "could displace us from existence," and that "we should not resist succession." In a 2015 talk, Sutton said, suppose "everything fails" and AI "kill[s] us all"; he asked, "Is it so bad that humans are not the final form of intelligent life in the universe?" This is how I begin the cover story for Jacobin's winter issue on AI. Some very influential people openly welcome an AI-driven future, even if humans aren't part of it. Whether you're new to the topic or work in the field, I think you'll get something out of it. I spent five months digging into the AI existential risk debates and the economic forces driving AI development. This was the most ambitious story of my career - it was informed by interviews and written conversations with three dozen people - and I'm thrilled to see it out in the world. Some of the people include: Deep learning pioneer and Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio Pathbreaking AI ethics researchers Joy Buolamwini and Inioluwa Deborah Raji Reinforcement learning pioneer Richard Sutton Cofounder of the AI safety field Eliezer Yudkowksy Renowned philosopher of mind David Chalmers Sante Fe Institute complexity professor Melanie Mitchell Researchers from leading AI labs Some of the most powerful industrialists and companies are plowing enormous amounts of money and effort into increasing the capabilities and autonomy of AI systems, all while acknowledging that superhuman AI could literally wipe out humanity: Bizarrely, many of the people actively advancing AI capabilities think there's a significant chance that doing so will ultimately cause the apocalypse. A 2022 survey of machine learning researchers found that nearly half of them thought there was at least a 10 percent chance advanced AI could lead to "human extinction or [a] similarly permanent and severe disempowerment" of humanity. Just months before he cofounded OpenAI, Altman said, "AI will probably most likely lead to the end of the world, but in the meantime, there'll be great companies." This is a pretty crazy situation! But not everyone agrees that AI could cause human extinction. Some think that the idea itself causes more harm than good: Some fear not the "sci-fi" scenario where AI models get so capable they wrest control from our feeble grasp, but instead that we will entrust biased, brittle, and confabulating systems with too much responsibility, opening a more pedestrian Pandora's box full of awful but familiar problems that scale with the algorithms causing them. This community of researchers and advocates - often labeled "AI ethics" - tends to focus on the immediate harms being wrought by AI, exploring solutions involving model accountability, algorithmic transparency, and machine learning fairness. Others buy the idea of transformative AI, but think it's going to be great: A third camp worries that when it comes to AI, we're not actually moving fast enough. Prominent capitalists like billionaire Marc Andreessen agree with safety folks that AGI is possible but argue that, rather than killing us all, it will usher in an indefinite golden age of radical abundance and borderline magical technologies. This group, largely coming from Silicon Valley and commonly referred to as AI boosters, tends to worry far mo...
