This week on Adapting, David sits down with Dr. Keren Fraiman, Dean of Spertus Institute and winner of the prestigious Ilia Salita Excellence in Research Award, for an essential conversation on why Israel must be front and center in our classrooms—now more than ever. While many Jewish educators recognize the importance of teaching about Israel, research shows that fear of controversy and complexity often leads to hesitation.  In this compelling episode, Keren dives into why it is crucial for educators to embrace the discomfort and navigate these complex discussions with confidence. She also shares practical strategies for managing conflict in the classroom and highlights the power of creating a permissive, supportive environment to hold space for all the complexities these conversations hold. With Israel-related issues impacting our students daily, Keren emphasizes the need for educators to lean on each other and build spaces that allow for honest, open dialogue—no matter how challenging it may feel. The need for Israel education is urgent. Let's not shy away from it.  This episode was produced by Dina Nusnbaum and Miranda Lapides. The show's executive producers are David Bryfman, Karen Cummins, and Nessa Liben. This episode was engineered and edited by Nathan J. This dispatch of Critical Conversation in Transportation Planning kicks off our safety series and features Wes Marshall, PhD, PE, a professor of civil engineering at the University of Colorado Denver, and Trung Vo, AICP, PE, Denver Office Director, Senior Planner, and Owner at Toole Design. Our speakers highlight how many traffic engineering standards are based on flawed assumptions rather than science, specifically pointing to problems with level of service metrics, automatic traffic growth assumptions, and designing for peak hours rather than community needs. They emphasize the need for courage to tackle arterial roads where most fatalities occur, challenging the reactive approach of waiting for crashes to happen instead of proactively designing safer streets for all users. Antonia Caicedo Holguín photographed by Imogen Forte. Antonia Caicedo Holguín (b. 1997 in Colombia) is deeply influenced by her hometown of Cali, Colombia, from the people who inhabit the city to the vibrant salsa music and dance culture of the region. By exploring everyday life, memory, and imagination, Caicedo Holguín chronicles her life, friends, and family. “A key component of my practice is the playfulness of writing narratives. The characters I build hold the charm, depth, and presence of literary protagonists.” Drawing inspiration from contemporary painters like Paula Rego and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, as well as old masters like Degas and Manet, her work often depicts fleeting moments of intimacy and moments of solitude. Often the subjects of Caicedo Holguín's paintings seem to be in a state of introspection, or lost in reverie. She works with a variety of materials, including oil paint and unconventional materials like coffee grounds, coffee dyes, natural Latin American pigments, and found objects. Caicedo Holguín received her Master of Arts in 2023 from the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art, at University College London in London, England. She has exhibited internationally, and has received the following awards and grants: The Olive Award, in recognition of art process experimentation, The Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, 2023, The Sarabande Foundation, Emerging Artist Fund, 2023, The Chelsea Arts Club Trust MA Materials and Research Award, 2022, and The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant, 2021. She was featured in The Art Newspaper, in an article titled “Art stars of tomorrow? Four of my favourite artists from the Slade School degree show in London” by Dr. Chibundu Onuzo in 2023, and again in 2024 in the article “I commissioned an artist for the first time: here's what it taught me about what it really means to be a ‘collector'.” The artist lives and works in London, England. He is also the best-selling author of over 39 books, including his latest non-fiction, Chained to the Desk in a Hybrid World. Dr. Robinson has researched and written extensively on the subjects of work-life balance, workaholism, and the impact of workaholism on families. Dr. Laura dives deep into Bryan's understanding of work addiction and how to regain perspective and balance in one's life.Dr. Robinson describes his own experience with workaholism and how deeply anxious he'd become if he didn't have work to do. Despite a failing marriage and physical health issues due to workaholism, it wasn't until he had a profound experience with the compassion and clarity exhibited by Tibetan monks that he started his journey toward balance. Bryan explains how counterintuitive it is to stop fighting and learn to float more in life, as in a riptide, but stresses it's finding balance to our fight or flight sympathetic nervous system that holds the key to self-care. Dr. Laura and Dr. Robinson talk about the lessons in his book Chained to the Desk in a Hybrid World, how Gen Z is changing the face of workaholism for the better, what “work jerkery” refers to, and how writing murder mysteries is part of Bryan's own balance in life. “I'm fortunate enough to live on the side of a mountain with an incredible view of the sunsets and just watching the sunset is fulfilling. And it also helps these creative ideas hatch. It's like an incubator. So even though I'm doing nothing, something's happening. And that's what we have to understand. Then what about my shortcomings? I can tell you what those are, but … what are my tallcomings again? People often go blank. But what you're doing is you're bringing balance to your thinking. You know, have a health day to balance out your sick days. Having green time to balance out the screen time.” - Bryan Robinson, PhDWatch this episode on Dr. Laura's YouTube channelAbout Bryan E. Also, listen to our timely discussion regarding the misinterpretation of fluid management—shifting from avoiding overload to outright restriction—reiterating the importance of precision and nuance in applying guidelines. Can these approaches then be turned into individualized risk assessments, which bridge the gap between protocolization and personalization? Why regenerating our oceans makes both public health and economic sense, with Dr. Enric Sala

While the climate change narrative has mostly focused on the concentration of CO2 and other greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere since the industrial revolution, we've ignored the essential role that the water cycle plays in regulating global temperatures. In this series I'll be speaking to an incredible list of scientists, farmers, and restorationists who are dedicated to reviving the precious waterways of the world. From the urban environment to the deep seas, our actions will determine whether or not we preserve our aquatic resources and all the life that depends on them for future generations.    In this first episode I got to speak with Enric Sala, a renowned ecologist making a clear case for why protecting nature is our best health insurance, and why it makes economic sense. Enric is the director of National Geographic's Pristine Seas project (which has succeeded in protecting more than 5 million sq km of ocean and created 22 marine reserves). Dr. Sala has received the Young Global Leader Award by the World Economic Forum, a Research Award from the Spanish Geographical Society, the Lowell Thomas Award from the Explorers Club, and a Hero Award from the Environmental Media Association. In his new book “The Nature of Nature: Why We Need the Wild,” he tells the story of his scientific awakening and his transition from academia to activism. More importantly, he shows the economic wisdom of making room for nature, even as the population becomes more urbanized, and how saving nature can save us all, by reversing conditions that led to the coronavirus pandemic and preventing other global catastrophes. In this interview we begin by unpacking the changes that have occurred in our oceans in the last few decades and how this is affecting people all over the world, even if you don't live anywhere near the sea.  Enric also offers a lot of hope that our oceans can recover if we act swiftly and give them the space and protection to regenerate.  I learned a lot from this talk and as I begin to learn more about how marine health is closely linked to terrestrial health, I would encourage those of you listening to examine how your own habits and lifestyle choices are connected to ocean health in ways that can be hard to see.

Digital content is at the center of our society and its prevalence continues to grow. Storytelling on digital platforms allows the medical community to showcase groundbreaking research and connect with audiences, who otherwise may not be privy to this information. Experts like Joshua Williams, MD, are at the forefront of some of this innovation. In October 2023, he received the Advancement in Research Award at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference.  Dr. Williams is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, as well as a practicing primary care pediatrician with Denver Health. He is the principal investigator on a National Institutes of Health grant to examine the impact of digital storytelling on influenza vaccination equity. In addition, he is a co-investigator at the Denver Health for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Vaccine Safety DataLink Project. “And what I hope comes from it is improvement in equity, improvement in the rate of influenza vaccination uptake in groups that historically haven't had high uptake,” says Dr. Williams  Some highlights from the episode include:  The larger goals of these data- and digital-based projects  How to merge medicine and storytelling  Advice for young doctors and medical professionals  Finding success from rejection  Dr. Williams will be presenting on this very topic at the PAS 2024 meeting in Toronto, Canda.  For more information on Children's Colorado, visit: childrenscolorado.org

Dr. Michael Demetriou is Director of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Designated Comprehensive Care Clinic, Professor of Neurology, and Chief of the Division of Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine. In his research, Mike studies the biological roles of complex sugars called glycans. Glycans are mostly found outside of cells and on cell surfaces. They form a dense forest around the surface of cells and can interact with other proteins to regulate cellular function through interactions with other cell surface proteins. Mike's lab is interested in how these cell surface glycans influence biology and disease, particularly in autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS) and in diseases like cancer where there are commonly abnormalities in these glycans. Mike is also a big fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team. While he doesn't play hockey himself anymore, he loves watching professional hockey games and seeing the Maple Leafs play whenever they are in town. He was awarded his MD and his PhD in molecular genetics from the University of Toronto. Mike completed his residency in Neurology at the University of Toronto as well and completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. This interview is an absolute gem with my friend, Dr. Russell Jaffe, who is a true authority in the field. He's renowned as the brilliant mind behind the ELISA test for heavy metal sensitivities and has an extensive range of fantastic detoxification supplements. Dr. Jaffe is a featured speaker in my upcoming Heavy Docuseries, set to launch on Valentine's Day in 2024. He also just released a remarkable new book, "How to Thrive in the 21st Century," which delves into the world of nutrition and optimizing it for detoxification. In today's podcast, we're diving deep into various topics, from the significance of vitamin C to essential nutrients like magnesium, the top five daily detox foods, and the importance of choline in enhancing magnesium's effects. Dr. Jaffe will enlighten us on how tripling your magnesium intake can revolutionize detox, while benefiting your brain, heart, digestion, and metabolism. We'll also explore how the presence of heavy metals in your body leads to free radicals, diminishing your antioxidant defenses and hastening the aging process. This, in turn, slows down your metabolism, making it easier to gain weight. There's an abundance of valuable insights in this episode, and I can't wait to share it all with you.  On today's podcast, you will learn: Russell Jaffe's protocol for living to 120. The top foods to help your body detox daily. The importance of proper mineralization. The relationship between heavy metal toxicity and disease. How to help reverse diabetes and obesity. Russell Jaffe's approach to diet and cuisine.   About Dr. Russell Jaffe: Dr. Russell Jaffe received his BS, MD and Ph.D. from the Boston University School of Medicine in 1972. He is board certified in Clinical Pathology and in Chemical Pathology. Dr. Jaffe's skeptical view and research of alternative health became a rich educational experience that transformed him into a student of such healing methods as Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, active meditation, homeopathy, and manipulative arts. He realized the limitations of Western medicine and reinvent himself. Dr. Jaffe collaborated with colleagues to start the Health Studies Collegium, a think tank that focuses on sustainable solutions to global health needs. For the last 30 years, Dr. Jaffe has advocated a system that treats people, not diagnoses; causes, not consequences; and promotes long term sustainable solutions as an alternative to a system dominated by prescriptive, symptom-suppressive solutions. Dr. Jaffe's cumulative experiences enabled him to build PERQUE Integrative Health, a company that offers the world scientifically proven, integrative health solutions that speed the transition from sick care to healthful caring. Dr. Jaffe's practical contributions to clinical medicine and to healthcare policy focus on functional, predictive tests and procedures designed to improve the precision of both diagnosis and of treatment outcomes. Dr. Tara Alvarez is Professor of Bio-Medical Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology and Chief Scientific Officer at OculoMotor Technologies. Tara's research focuses on how we move our eyes, how visual information is brought in through our visual system, and how the brain changes. In particular, she studies a condition called convergence insufficiency. In this condition, people have difficulty and discomfort when reading or maintaining focus on near objects. She is working to better understand convergence insufficiency and how the brain changes during visual therapy, resulting in reduced symptoms. In her free time, Tara loves spending time with her kids, doing renovation projects at home, cooking, and gardening. She was awarded her B.S. in Electrical Engineering and her Ph.D. in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering from Rutgers University. Afterwards, she conducted postdoctoral research at Bell Labs before joining the faculty at New Jersey Institute of Technology. She has received numerous awards and honors in her career, including an NSF Career Award, the Founding Members Award for Science from the Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association, an Edison Patent Award, the NJIT Excellence in Research Award, and Augmented World Expo's Auggie Awards for Women XR Laureate and for Most Innovative Breakthrough. She has also been named an Outstanding Woman Scientist of NJ, a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, and a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. In this interview, Tara shares more about her life and science.
