Rick Sutcliffe joins "Cubs Pregame Live!" to celebrate the life of Ryne Sandberg, sharing stories and memories of one of the greatest Cubs of all time.
In many ways, returning to Cubs Convention was just what Ryne Sandberg needed. As a guest on the Cubs Weekly Podcast, the Hall of Famer and Cubs legend shared what it was like to return to the annual fan fest and see the love and support from the fans.Sandberg joined host Andy Martínez, providing an update on his health after announcing late last year that the cancer he had fought in 2024 had returned. Then, the second baseman recalled his statue unveiling day last June, where he was forever immortalized at Wrigley Field.Later in the podcast, Sandberg recalled his playing days — sharing the impact that Larry Bowa had on his career, what it was like to be traded to Chicago and where in the world he was when he got the news.“Ryno” then remembered June 23, 1984 — the “Sandberg Game” that launched him into stardom. He recalled how excited he and the Cubs were to be named the “Game of the Week” an honor they originally weren't going to have until a game on the East Coast was rained out. Sandberg's 2-homer game propelled him to fame and was the highlight of his MVP campaign.
On final episode of the Cubs Weekly Podcast: Best of 2024, we revisit conversations with Cubs legends Bobby Dernier, Rick Sutcliffe and Jody Davis of the 1984 team who reached the NLCS 40 years ago.On the 40th anniversary of that epic season, the trio reflects back on what made that team so special and shared their best Ryne Sandberg stories.
Mark McGrath, former frontman of Sugar Ray, discussed his unexpected journey from being a rock star to playing baseball in major league parks, likening it to a Make-A-Wish experience. He reminisced about his childhood in Southern California, supporting the Dodgers and idolizing players like Steve Garvey and Mike Piazza. McGrath humorously compared the crowd energy at a baseball game to a Sugar Ray concert and shared anecdotes about his interactions with fans and other celebrities, including Rick Sutcliffe The post Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray talks baseball at 2000 All Star Game as Rick Sutcliffe busts in on Nestor first appeared on Baltimore Positive WNST.
Former Cy Young winner Rick Sutcliffe stopped by the Cubs Weekly Podcast with hosts Tony Andracki and Andy Martínez. The “Red Baron” reflected on Ryne Sandberg's new statue unveiled at Gallagher Way. Sutcliffe shared stories about his former teammate, including car rides to Wrigley Field and spending time in meetings with Lou Piniella after their playing days ended. The 1979 Rookie of the Year then discussed this year's team — including what he's thought of rookie phenom Shota Imanaga and who it reminds him of. Later in the pod, Sutcliffe shares a fun story about Justin Steele ahead of his first career complete game and a behind-the-scenes anecdote with Ian Happ.
Rick Sutcliffe discusses Ryne Sandberg and "The Good, the Bad, and the Dirty"
In the final hour, Bruce Levine and David Haugh were joined by former Cubs pitcher Rick Sutcliffe to discuss Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg's legacy ahead of the organization unveiling a statue of Sandberg outside of Wrigley Field on Sunday. After that, Levine and Haugh listened back to the best of Sandberg's interview on the Mully & Haugh Show on Friday morning. Later, they previewed the Cubs-Mets game later in the afternoon.
You think you know the origin story of the Donruss Rated Rookie. I thought I did, too. In this episode, we uncover the Rated Rookies before the Rated Rookies, talk 80s fashion, popped collars, and Lisa Birnbach's "Official Preppy Handbook." We also dive into the 1984 Cubs, who rode exciting comebacks, Gary Mathews' leadership, and NL Cy Young Award winner Rick Sutcliffe's 16-1 record after coming over from Cleveland in June to their first postseason appearance was since 1945. Although Joe Carter was Cleveland's prize for trading away Sutcliffe, we focus on another player acquired from the Cubs in the same trade: former outfielder and current inmate at the H.H. Coffield Penitentary in Texas, sex offender Mel Hall. Hall's story is so disturbing, that it's too much even for me. To read it for yourself: https://www.sbnation.com/2014/7/15/5883593/the-many-crimes-of-mel-hall.
In the final hour, Bruce Levine and David Haugh were joined by former Cubs pitcher Rick Sutcliffe to reminisce and to share details of the speech he gave the current club in spring training. After that, Levine and Haugh discussed their favorite memories of the 1984 Cubs. Later, the guys reacted to the White Sox moving right-hander Michael Kopech from the rotation to the bullpen.
Former Cubs catcher Jody Davis stops by the Cubs Weekly Podcast to chat from the 2024 Convention. Davis reflects on the 1984 season, what it was like with a firsthad view of Ryne Sandberg on a daily basis and what made Rick Sutcliffe so special during his time in a Cubs uniform.Plus, Davis ranks himself among all-time Cubs catchers and how he was able to flourish both defensively and offensively.

The (Lou) Gram Two get into the electric moog mood groove (#Madonna) and also demand to know:
The 1984 Cubs hold a special spot in the hearts of many Cubs fans. The center fielder and lead-off hitter for that team, Bobby Dernier understands and appreciates that. The former Cub caught up with Andy Martínez and Bruce Levine at Cubs Convention to reminisce about the team.Dernier recalled the “Sandberg Game”, which really put the Cubs in the spotlight that season and playing with Sandberg that season. The righty shared stories of that team, including having Rick Sutcliffe, who he had played with in high school, join the Cubs midway through that season.Later in the podcast, Dernier discusses how crucial a leadoff hitter is for a team and how much he enjoyed watching Dexter Fowler in 2016 in that role and Mike Tauchman in 2023. Then, he shares his 2016 story — where he was when the Cubs finally won it all and what his emotions were.
10-23-2023 Passed Ball Show. John starts off this program by pointing out that the Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies both clinched the League Championship Series OTD last year and have a chance to do it again tonight. John then talks about the success of the Philadelphia Phillies and the reason they have a chance to win the World Series this season. That is because of the amount of money they have spent in free agency. John believes that this is great for the sport of baseball and explains why. John then talks about how many in the baseball community have overrated the managerial success of Bob Melvin as he gets set to take his third MLB manager job in Four Seasons. During today's #savingsportsHISTORY segment, John discusses, among other things, cricket, Pele, Jackie Robinson, Rick Sutcliffe, John Heisman, Frank "Bruiser" Kinard, Vern Stevens, Jim Bunning, and W. G. Grace.
Rick Sutcliffe shares a Dick Butkus story, "Like It, Love It" and "What To Watch For"

Rick Sutcliffe checks in on the Cubs start and a recap of the weekend in "The Good, the Bad, and the Dirty"
Over the past couple of years we have recounted every Cubs season from 1980 through 2011 on Remember This Crap, and here is the culmination of those efforts. We saved the 1984 season for last. Were our efforts to remember 32 painful season of Cubs baseball pathetic and futile? Probably. But we did save a great one for last. The 1984 Cubs shaped an entire generation of Cubs fandom. They crawled out of the abyss and berthed a superstar second baseman and a Cy Young pitcher and mostly were a lot of fun. They did very un-Cublike things like go into first place and stay there. They beat up the Mets, which is always fun, but they also just plain beat them. They swept the Cardinals twice and handed them more than a few humiliating defeats. They started the playoffs with a bang and ended it with a whimper, something we got used to until a recent team finally saved us from that fate. For many of us, these are the Cubs of our youth. Ryne Sandberg. Rick Sutcliffe. Sarge. Bull Durham. Bob Dernier. Lee Arthur Smith. Keith Moreland. Steve Trout. Jody, Jody, Jody. For better or worse they are why we care so damned much about this team. So kick back and enjoy our look back at the 1984 Cubs. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/desipio/message
For 41 years Ted Leitner was a member of the San Diego Padres broadcast team. He joins me on this episode to talk about the ballpark where he saw his first game as a kid, the so-called "cookie cutter" multi-purpose stadiums of the 70's and 80's, the '84 Padres, the funniest Rick Sutcliffe story I have ever heard and memories of the late Tony Gwynn and Ted's broadcast partner of 35 years, Jerry Coleman.Click here to check out Ted's book, "Ted Talks: Uncle Teddy's Fond Memories, Crazy Stories and Heartfelt Reflections."Support the show
We may be in the off-season but we found a way you can still listen to a game while drifting off to sleep, baseball ASMR. Plus we check in with the Fighters new stadium where they apparently forgot to measure, remember a great Rick Sutcliffe story and talk some Saved By the Bell Fantasy Camp. Our main story is about a big guy who hit some monster home runs but did not like being a baseball player it seems, Dave Kingman. We hear about some of his biggest and longest dingers as well as his ice cream parlor? Then we rip some 2000 Topps in Wax Pack Heroes. The Cubs followed up a division title in 1989 by hosting the worst Home Run Derby of all time, and a rain delayed, mostly boring All-Star Game. Ryne Sandberg and Andre Dawson had good years, Mark Grace was pretty good and that was about it. They didn't sign any free agents, the only veteran they added was Dave Clark and amazingly just running back the same team from a year before didn't quite work out. They rushed their first round pick to the big leagues just weeks after the draft and he was never heard from again. The season started late because of a lockout (sound familiar), Mitch Williams walked everybody, Rick Sutcliffe got hurt again, and the opening day crowd was hilarious (wait until you hear the money.) Oh, and for no apparent reason there are a few minutes of Bears at the beginning and end of the podcast. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message
The baseball podcast with David Brown is back and this week the guys discuss important baseball topics like why does Rick Sutcliffe think the Cubs are good enough to add players? Should the Cubs trade Willson Contreras? Why is it so much better when the Cubs bring up guys like Brandon Hughes and Christopher Morel instead of 30 year old non-prospects? Why do teams wait so long to sell? If the Nationals are really going to trade Juan Soto first, why would they do that? And second, why would they do that? When is it appropriate to interview players parents during games? Why is Max Scherzer so mean to ceremonial first pitch throwers? Is the Pacific Coast League really a thing again? You get your weekly Honus Wagner anecdote and more. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message
Sara and Danny are back talking about a very successful west coast road trip that saw the Cubs win 4 of 6 facing the Padres and the Diamondbacks. They are taking a look at Kyle Hendricks' gritty win, Seiya Suzuki's glove and Gomes' power against Zac Gallen. After the break they look ahead to another three game set with the Pirates at Wrigley Field, why both of us love Rick Sutcliffe in the booth and why the Cubs and Pirates have shockingly similar offensive stats this season.
