On December 5, 1921, Babe Ruth and two other members of the New York Yankees are suspended for participating in an “illegal” barnstorming tour after the 1921 World Series. Commissioner Landis punishes Ruth, outfielder Bob Meusel, and pitcher “Wild Bill” Piercy for the first six weeks of the 1922 season. This will have little impact as the Yankees will make World Series for the second straight year (although they lost to the NY Giants for the second consecutive time). However, Ruth had the worst year of his career posting a 6.4 WAR, and as an everyday player, his 1.106 OPS was his second worst mark of the 20's. He did bounce back in 1923, winning the MVP. He still managed to hit 35 homers with 96 RBI, so it was a pretty good year. What I marvel at is how much of his Baseball Reference page is bolded. Between 1918 and 1931, he wasn't the league leader in home runs just twice. Once was this 1922 season and the other was 1925, when he appeared in just 98 games. On December 5, 1973 — Ron Santo becomes the first player to invoke the new 10 and 5 rule. The Cubs want to trade Santo to the Angels for two pitchers, but he vetoes the deal. The 10-5 rule, which was agreed upon during the 1972 players strike, gives a player with 10 years' service and 5 consecutive years with a team the right to veto a trade. In this case Santo was from the west coast but was comfortable in Chicago and desired to stay in the area. The Cubs honored the new agreement, and he will eventually be traded to the cross-town White Sox. It did not work out well as Bill Melton was the third baseman, and Santo moved around between second and the DH role. He will hang up the cleats in 1974. Ironically on this day in 2011, Santo will finally get his due and be voted into Baseball's Hall of Fame. A long overdue honor for Santo who passed away the previous year. He receives 15 of 16 votes from members of the “Golden Era” Committee. On December 5, 1978 — After sixteen years with the Cincinnati Reds, Pete Rose signs a four-year, $3.2 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. Other teams which pursued “Charlie Hustle” include the Mets, Braves, Pirates and the Royals. The deal temporarily makes Rose the highest-paid athlete in team sports. In 5 years with the Phils (1979-1983), Pete will be a 4X All-Star and help the Phillies to 2 NL Pennants including the Phillies first Championship in 1980. He led the league in hits in 1981 with 140 base knocks, and he finished his Phillies career with a slash line of .291/.365/.361. That was a period that covered his age-38 to age-42 seasons. On December 5, 1990, the San Diego Padres and Toronto Blue Jays collaborate on an old-fashioned blockbuster trade. San Diego deals Roberto Alomar and Joe Carter to Toronto for Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez. Alomar and Carter will help the Blue Jays to two World Championships. Alomar will become one of baseball's best players during his 6 years, hitting .307 with 206 stolen bases, a .382 OBP and .833 OPS. He will finish in top 10 in the MVP vote 3 times and win 6 Gold Globes. Carter, a premium RBI man, will drive in 100+ runs in 6 of his 7 years in Toronto. Only the strike shortened year stopped him in 1995. He will finish in the top 5 for MVP voting twice and hit one of the most historic homeruns in World Series history off Mitch Williams. Fred McGriff will go on to hit 493 home runs over his career playing for multiple teams. It remains an injustice he is not in Cooperstown.Tony Fernandez will play for 2 seasons in San Diego end up back on Toronto and play on the 1993 World Championship team, playing in all 6 games and driving in 9 runs. On December 5, 1951, “Shoeless” Joe Jackson dies at the age of 62. Jackson, who succumbs to a heart attack, batted .356 over his 13-year career. Jackson had the talent to be the greatest player in history, but he threw it away...

The most important hit in Blue Jays history came 30 years ago this week when Joe Carter launched a walk-off three run home run down the left field line off of embattled Phillies reliever Mitch Williams in Game 6 of the World Series. It remains one of just two home runs that have ever ended a Fall Classic, and an indelible moment that came to define '90s baseball almost as much as Kirk Gibson's defined the '80s. Mike and Bill go through the long roads two very likable clubs (at the time, at least) took to get to this historic moment.

Scoot begins his new schedule this week, but we give a HUGE shoutout to our boys Josh Smith and Mitch Williams for joining the show for the first time and certainly not the last. Josh, Mitch and Dante start off showing some love to our guy Mitch and his work on the PM Recovery podcast (go check them out). The three dive into a loaded conversation of football talk. The preseason is officially over, and we begin by addressing the Ravens streak dying. The boys also jump into some roster discussion. Final cuts were this week and now all teams have their 53-man rosters finalized. Some notable players were cut this week from the Ravens, including a few surprises, as well as some that we were pleasantly surprised who made the team. Finally, the end of an era in Baltimore, James Proche was included in the preliminary round of cuts and will be moving on from the Ravens. Moving on from the roster, Mitch and Josh give their thoughts on the season from a macro-level, including players they have their eyes on, who they want to see breakout, and mainly what they're most excited to see ahead of this season starting. Wrapping up their intent focus on the Ravens, Dante and the boys jump into some headlines from the NFL world, largely involving the Ravens in one way or another, including the mention that the Ravens were one of several teams who called about the availability of now Cowboys backup QB Trey Lance. Josh, Mitch and Dante give their thoughts on what, if anything, this means for this team. Lastly, this week marks the "official" start to the college season, so Josh and Dante give their previews of the week 1 slate and the games they have circled, along with a report from LA on the vibe surrounding the USC Trojans from Mitch. Before getting out ahead of the long weekend, Scoot and Dante give their long awaited and evergreen NFL season predictions. In the wake of last year, Dante went back to the drawing board hoping to be a little closer to the target this season. Everyone have a safe and wonderful holiday weekend, give us a shout wherever you're listening, tweet us or IG us your predictions for the season, and as always, stay hydrated. CHEERS!

The Philadelphia Phillies saw another string of victories at home this week. Starting out the week against former manager Gabe Kapler and his San Francisco Giants, the Phillies were dominant on offense. Throughout the 3 game series, the Phillies put up 20 runs and won two games which secured them the series win. Later in the week, the St. Louis Cardinals were reminded why this team was in the World Series last year. The Cardinals didn't stand a chance as the Phillies put up a combined 22 runs over the span of 3 games while St Louis only managed to bring 3 runners across home plate. With that sweep, the Phillies would end the week at 5-1, and 7-3 in their last 10. Can this momentum continue as a new week of MLB action continues inside Citizens Bank Park? Last week, Los Angeles Angels superstar pitcher Shohei Ohtani was revealed to have a torn UCL which has brought his incredible pitching season to an abrupt end. However, his MLB season continues as he will take the Angels designated hitter spot. Former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mitch Williams, joined by Tom Arnone, and Michael Chromiak, breaks down this injury, if it will need a second Tommy John surgery and what is Ohtani's future with the Angels? Is Shohei Ohtani still worth $500 million? Let us know what you think in the comments below. Looking ahead, the Phillies welcome the Los Angeles Angels and the Milwaukee Brewers for two more 3 game series. The Angels will be without local icon Mike Trout who was recently placed on the injured list and as already discussed, Ohtani won't take the mound. The Brewers are sitting pretty at the top of the NL Central and have been dominant in their last 10 taking sweeping the San Diego Padres, Minnesota Twins and the Texas Rangers. Williams, Arnone and Chromiak give us a glimpse into the week ahead and if the Phillies can hold onto their top spot in the MLB Wild Card race. To round things out, Chrome and Mitch Williams are going to have a catch. On today's episode of “Here's The Thing,” Michael Chromiak, Thomas Arnone, and former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mitch Williams take a look at the Phillies series against the Washington Nationals including the Little League Classic, the biggest concerns are heading into the final months of the MLB season, and their upcoming battles with the San Francisco Giants and St Louis Cardinals. Sunday night, the Philadelphia Phillies, in the final game of a 3 game series against the Nationals, lost the Little League Classic and thus the series. The Phillies, fresh off splitting the 2 game series against the Toronto Blue Jays, were hoping to keep some momentum alive. That would all come to a halt Friday when they lost 8-7. Saturday however, the Phillies exploded late in the game to win 12-3. With the San Francisco Giants and St Louis Cardinals lined up for the week, can the Phillies hold on to the 2nd palace spot in the NL East? September is right around the corner and the MLB Regular Season is coming to a close. In a week where the Phillies played only five games, they managed to put up 32 runs while their opponents could only come up with 21. Yet the Phillies still managed to lose 3 out of the 5 games. Not exactly the week you'd expect from a playoff bound team. It leaves us all wondering one thing. Is the Phillies pitching a bigger concern than the offense? Let us know in the comments below. Moving on from the past, we look towards the future. Tonight the Giants walk into Citizens Bank Park to start a 3 game series. Aaron Nola is set to take on Scott Alexander in game 1,while Taijuan Walker and Michael Lorenzen are set to start the following two games. Can arguably the 3 greatest starters on this roster set the tone and give our offense the room to breathe? Can Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, Bryce Harper, and Nick Castellanos get some fire under their bats and take some pressure away from the Phillies pitchers? To round things out, Michael Chromiak and Mitch Williams are going to have a catch. Not literally…but Michael will be throwing some questions to Mitch who will fire back with some raw thoughts.

On today's episode of “Here's The Thing,” filling in for Thomas Arnone, Michael Chromiak and former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mitch Williams kick things off with their thoughts on whether Taijuan Walker is a legit Cy Young candidate or not. So far this season in Walker's 24 starts he has a 4.03 era, 106 K's, 1.28 WHIP, and 131.2 innings pitched. While not having a great start against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday, Walker is tied for the most wins in the National League with a record of 13-5. Rumors have begun to circulate that Rob Thomson is saying Walker might miss his next start due to workload management. The Phillies wrap things up at home with a 6-4 record. They kicked off the week with a series win over the Washington Nationals, including an emotional and historic Wednesday when Michael Lorenzen threw his first-ever No-Hitter and Westin Wilson homered at his first at-bat. They would not be so lucky over the weekend, however, losing the series to the Minnesota Twins. Yet, in the wake of defeat, Trea Turner's hitting streak was extended to 9, while Nick Castellanos saw his 13-game hit streak come to an end Sunday. JT Realmuto has also shown to be getting on track this past week. This week it's a quick trip to Canada for a 2 game series against the Toronto Blue Jays, a rare 2 days off and then the Washington Nationals look for revenge but this time on their home turf inside our Nation's Capital. How will the extended time off fare for this MLB club?

On today's episode of “Here's The Thing,” filling in for Thomas Arnone, Michael Chromiak and former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mitch Williams discuss the Phillies as they end a great week by going 5-2. The Phillies won their series over the Miami Marlins and the Kansas City Royals. The Phillies host the Washington Nationals for four games to start the week and the Minnesota Twins for three games to end the week. After taking blame for the loss on Wednesday, Trea Turner returned to Citizens Bank Park on Friday to multiple standing ovations from the Phillies crowd. On Saturday, he gave the crowd even more reasons to cheer as he hit a go ahead 3-run home-run and followed that up with an RBI double to add on. Trea is riding a 3-game hitting streak as we open a new week. Trea had a rough series in Miami despite the team playing pretty well. The Phillies themselves took 3 out of 4 games and honestly should have won the game they lost. The Phillies bullpen could't hold a 3 run lead late in the game and finally an error from Turner gave the Marlins the win. Turner also came up to the plate in extra innings with runners on 2nd and 3rd and a chance to blow the game open but couldn't get a hit to do that. After the weekend series against the Royals, Trea Turner is back. Join Michael and MItch and let them know if you Agree or Disagree to that statement. Michael and Mitch will also look ahead at the upcoming series against the Nationals and Twins. Can the Phillies take 6 out of 7, or even sweep the week with these mediocre and bad teams coming in. On today's episode of “Here's The Thing,” filling in for Thomas Arnone, Michael Chromiak and former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mitch Williams discuss the Phillies as they come out of the All Star Break. The Philadelphia Phillies started the weekend off shaky losing Friday's game to the San Diego Padres, but answered thunderously by sweeping Saturday's double header and walking Sunday's game off in extra innings. The Phillies welcome the Milwaukee Brewers to town starting on Tuesday and then head out to take on the Cleveland Indians Guardians for the weekend series. The Phillies recently called up one of their top 5 prospects in Johan Rojas to take the spot of Cristian Pache. Rojas' debut on Saturday in both games of the double header were fantastic. The call up and emergence of Johan Rojas has changed the Phillies plans for the Trade Deadline. Join Michael and Mitch and let them know if you Agree or Disagree with that statement. Also recently announced by manager Rob Thomson, Bryce Harper could play his first game at 1st base for the Phillies during the Brewers series. They wouldn't commit yet to which game but it looks like Harper is starting to get more and more healthy with that elbow. Do all of these changes and factors change things for the Phillies as the trade deadline is rapidly approaching on August 1st. Michael and Mitch will also look ahead at the upcoming series against the Brewers and Indians. The Brewers are coming into Philly fresh off a sweep of the upstart Cincinnati Reds, can the Phillies cool them off. On today's episode of “Here's The Thing,” Thomas Arnone and former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mitch Williams discuss the previous week of Phillies action against the Tampa Bay Rays and the Miami Marlins. The Philadelphia Phillies started the week off hot as they swept the Tampa Bay Rays. The Phillies came back in the top of the 9th inning to take the first game in the Marlins series thanks to a pinch hit home run from Cristian Pache. That unfortunately was the highlight of the weekend series in Miami as the Phillies struggled on Saturday and Sunday. Starters Ranger Suarez and Aaron Nola gave up early 1st inning runs that put the Phillies in catch-up mode from the start. Bryce Harper was hit by a pitch directly on the elbow he had surgery on, was pulled from Saturday's game, and sat out Sunday's game as a precaution. The MLB All Star break seems to be coming at a perfect time for the Phillies. The Phillies stretched their road win streak to 13 games before losing the final two games in Miami. After ending the Florida road trip with a 4-2 record this was still a successful road trip despite how it ended. Join Thomas and Mitch and let them know if you Agree or Disagree with the poll. Starting the road trip 4-0 had the Phillies rolling but struggled to close the first half of the season. The MLB trade deadline is the next major event on the season calendar and will be coming up on August 1st. Thomas and Mitch will discuss what if anything will the Phillies do. Major move for another top-end starting pitcher or do they look for a right-handed power bat to play either left field or first base? After returning from the All-Star break the Phillies will host the San Diego Padres for four games in three nights starting Friday night July 14th. They have a scheduled day-night doubleheader scheduled for Saturday. The Phillies selected Aidan Miller SS/3B with their first-round pick in yesterday's MLB Draft. Thomas and Mitch will give their thoughts on what they like or dislike about this pick. Miller was the highest-ranked player (#13) left on the MLB Network's Top Draft Prospect rankings when selected. To round things out, Thomas Arnone and Mitch Williams will have a catch. Not literally…but Tommy will be throwing some questions to Mitch who will fire back with some raw thoughts.

On today's episode of “Here's The Thing,” Thomas Arnone and former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mitch Williams discuss the previous week of Phillies action against the Chicago Cubs and Washington Nationals. The Philadelphia Phillies started the week off hot as they swept the Chicago Cubs, who were returning from their games in London, UK. Despite scoring 19 runs on Saturday, the Phillies ended the week disastrously by losing the series to the Washington Nationals. Once again the Phillies struggled with runners in scoring position in the two losses to the Nats, going 1-8 in both Friday and Sunday's loss. Nick Castellanos has been named as a National League reserve and the Phillies lone representative for the upcoming All Star Game in Seattle. Was Nick Castellanos the only worthy player to be the Phillies All Star representative this year? Nick has put the struggles of last year behind him and has been the Phillies' best and most consistent offensive player so far this year. This is the Nick Castellanos the Phillies and Phillies fans are glad to see after the struggle of last year. Hopefully, Nick can get some help offensively and this team can continue to play well. Moving on from the Cubs and Nationals, the guys take a look ahead to the upcoming week's schedule which includes 6 games on the road starting in Tampa Bay and Miami. This will be a tough stretch for the Phillies but if they end it well they can make up some ground with the Marlins in the NL East standings. Starting the week off against one of the best teams in baseball in the Tampa Bay Rays, and old friend Zach Eflin in Monday's game. Then the Phillies travel to their house of horrors and take on the Marlins. The Marlins are 3 games ahead of the Phillies in the NL East standings and 1.5 games ahead of them for the Wild Card spot. The Marlins have been playing very well recently which has made it hard for the Phillies to make up ground with their good playing.

On today's episode of “Here's The Thing,” Thomas Arnone and former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mitch Williams discuss the previous week of Phillies action against the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets. Nick Castellanos and The Philadelphia Phillies started the week off losing the first game to the Atlanta Braves 4-2. Bad weather would postpone the second one until later in the season. Then in the third game Alec Bohm would be the only man to score as the Braves decimated the Phillies 5-1. The New York Mets would then come to town and the Phillies, rallying behind Trea Turner would take game 1. The Mets would get their revenge however, taking game 2 following impressive outings by Max Scherzer and Starling Marte. Game 3 would see Zach Wheeler and the Phillies take this city on an emotional roller coaster. Being down 6-3 in the 8th, the Mets bullpen would crumble and the Phillies capitalized putting up 4 runs and sealing not only the game but also the series win. Kyle Schwarber's typically “Hot” June hasn't materialized like it has in the past, having gone only 2-20 in this most recent stretch of home games. So far in the month of June, Schwarber is still only batting .182 with 7 home runs, which is completely unacceptable for a lead off hitter. Even more unacceptable when the power numbers are just pedestrian for a power hitter. For the money, Schwarber just needs to be better. After going 0-10 against the Mets, is it time for Rob Thompson to move Kyle Schwarber out of the lead off spot? Let us know in the comments below! Moving on from the Braves and Mets, we take a look ahead to the upcoming week's schedule which includes 3 games in Chicago against the Cubs before returning home for the weekend against the Nationals. Can the Phillies start another run and win 5 games this week? Despite having an off day Monday, can the Phillies use the momentum of their comeback win on Sunday to start another hot stretch?

On today's episode of “Here's The Thing,” Michael Chromiak, filling in for Thomas Arnone, and Mitch Williams discuss the previous week of Philadelphia Phillies action. The Philadelphia Phillies started the week off strong by taking three out of four games against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Phillies ended the week just as hot by sweeping the Oakland A's. The Phillies have a tough NL East-based home stand coming up this week as the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets take their turns at Citizens Bank School. Join Michael Cromiak and Mitch Williams as they look back at the impressive road trip for the Phillies. The Phillies pitching resurgence has been more impressive than the offensive rebound. Join the fellas and let them know if you #Agree or #Disagree with that statement. It's truly amazing what happens with this team and their rankings when the calendar switches to June. The Phillies were able to exercise some demons playing in Arizona against the Diamondbacks and took that momentum north to sweep the strugglings A's. The Phillies are currently in third place in the NL East standing, 8 games behind the Braves and 3 games behind the Marlins for second place. A big week against the Braves and Mets can put the Phillies within striking distance of the top spot in the division before the All-Star Break. The Phillies were dealt a blow to the bullpen this past week as Serantony Dominguez was placed on the Injured List with an oblique strain. Can the Phillies bullpen and pitching overall help get through this stretch of games without one of their top relievers?

On today's episode of “Here's The Thing,” Thomas Arnone and Mitch Williams discuss the previous week of Philadelphia Phillies action. The Philadelphia Phillies started the week off strong with a sweep of the Detroit Tigers inside Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies would spend the weekend with the Los Angeles Dodgers and won two out of three games to secure the series win and ended the stretch of home games with a great 5-1 record. Aaron Nola, Taijuan Walker, and Zack Wheeler all took no hit bids deep into their last starts against the Tigers. On the other side of the mound, Kyle Schwarber has continued to stay red hot hitting a walk off home run to win Friday's series opener against the Dodgers. As we look ahead to next week, can the Phillies keep this momentum alive when they return to the road to take on the Arizona Diamondbacks and Oakland Athletics in back to back 3 game series?. Are the Philadelphia Phillies “Back”? Following a rocky start for this MLB team, is it safe to say that they have found their rhythm? So far for the month of June this team is 7-3, which is their hottest start to a month yet following April's 4-6 and May's 5-5. How important was this stretch of home games? Was this just what this team needed to get back in sync? Mitch and Tom take a look at the past as we also look towards the future with hopeful eyes given that Jose Alvarado and Alec Bohm have returned and the returns of Darick Hall and Christian Pache are on the horizon. Over the last few years, the Phillies seem to have a problem when they play the Arizona Diamondbacks. Why? What is it about the Diamondbacks that this team just cannot overcome? Can the Phillies, who are playing good baseball, break the streak of bad play against the Diamondbacks? Recently the Atlanta Braves, the Phillies NL East rival, traveled to Oakland and struggled, losing 2 out of the 3 games. Could this be one of the hardest weeks of the year? Will this stop the Phillies dead in their tracks? Or will this be the week that the Phillies remind everyone why they were in the World Series last year? To round things out, Tom Arnone and Mitch Williams are going to have a catch. Not literally…but Tom will be throwing some questions to Mitch who will fire back with some raw thoughts. On today's episode of “Here's The Thing,” Thomas Arnone and Mitch Williams discuss the previous week of Philadelphia Phillies action. The Philadelphia Phillies were swept in the opening week series to rival the New York Mets. The Phillies stayed on the struggle bus when they headed down to our nation's capital to take on the Washington Nationals over the weekend. Even with Zack Wheeler starting on Friday night, the Phillies just could not rally and recover from being down 7-1. However, on Saturday and Sunday, Kyle Schwarber and the Phillies would find a way to make it work as they took the last two games of that series. Now on a 2 game win streak, (after losing a heartbreaking 5 in a row), the Phillies are looking to extend that as they return home to prepare for the Detroit Tigers and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Will the Phillies need to win 15 out of the next 20 games? Will they go on a 15 game run or will it be broken up? Let us know in the comments below! Former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mitch Williams gives us a glimpse as to what these players are thinking coming off a long stretch of bad luck on the road including a being swept by a divisional rival. Over the last few years, the Phillies seem to have a problem when they play the New York Mets. Why? What is so difficult year after year about playing against this long time rival? Mitch saw something in Zach Wheeler's pitching motion on Friday night. Could this be something that changes the way the Phillies look at their rotations moving forward? Or could this be something that makes this team rethink Wheeler's position on the team? To round things out, Tom Arnone and Mitch Williams are going to have a catch. Not literally…but Tom will be throwing some questions to Mitch who will fire back with some raw thoughts.

Williams pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1991 to 1993 and would finish up his career in the Major Leagues in 1997 with the Kansas City Royals after brief stints with the Houston Astros and the California Angels (now known as the Los Angeles Angels). MLB All-Star right fielder Bryce Harper returned to the Philadelphia Phillies lineup on Tuesday after completing the fastest recovery from Tommy John surgery. Despite the return of Harper, the Phillies were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers at the start of the week and would go on to lose two of the three games against the Boston Red Sox at home this weekend. This Day in Baseball - The Daily Rewind

It remains an injustice he is not in Cooperstown. Tony Fernandez will play for 2 seasons in San Diego end up back on Toronto and play on the 1993 World Championship team, playing in all 6 games and driving in 9 runs. On December 5, 1951, “Shoeless” Joe Jackson dies at the age of 62. Jackson, who succumbs to a heart attack, batted .356 over his 13-year career. Jackson had the talent to be the greatest player in history, but he threw it away when he accepted $5,000 to throw the 1919 World Series. As part of the most infamous scandal in sports history, Jackson was banished from baseball following the 1920 season, along with his seven co-conspirators. The controversy over that decision has kept Jackson's name alive long after his death.

The Cubs followed up a division title in 1989 by hosting the worst Home Run Derby of all time, and a rain delayed, mostly boring All-Star Game. Ryne Sandberg and Andre Dawson had good years, Mark Grace was pretty good and that was about it. They didn't sign any free agents, the only veteran they added was Dave Clark and amazingly just running back the same team from a year before didn't quite work out. They rushed their first round pick to the big leagues just weeks after the draft and he was never heard from again. The season started late because of a lockout (sound familiar), Mitch Williams walked everybody, Rick Sutcliffe got hurt again, and the opening day crowd was hilarious (wait until you hear the money.) Today's episode is with my friend, a former colleague, and a professional racquetball player, Mitch Williams. Mitch and I started at Ericsson at the same time and on the same team. Much of our telecom journey to date has been very similar as we seemed to make similar moves at almost the same time and in a similar direction. I had a lot of fun speaking with Mitch about many topics related to sports, cross-pollination of sports, how sports shaped us, including the joy and pain we get from winning and losing. We discuss the painful transition from the sport we loved into what I call the normal civilian life and the mindset we have learned by playing the sport, and how we are now applying it in the next chapter of our lives. Mitch shares many fun stories from his upbringing, racquetball journey, and his current life of being a dad to three young daughters and the only male in his house - living in Arizona with his wife, three young daughters, and two female dogs. Other topics covered in this podcast:Mitch gave great examples of strategic alliances and having a network of people who helped him get to different positions. The importance of timing in life, measuring what matters, and focusing on the things that make a difference. The importance of knowing yourself, knowing what drives you, and being self-aware of where one finds purpose, fulfillment, and career/ job-fit.Article about Mitch and his racquetball retirementSome of my favorite quotes from this episode:Winning and losing:"I learned in racquetball; there is a lot of different ways to win. You don't have to win just by doing this one thing."On the transience of a loss or a win:"That's the hardest thing to tell a kid that you coach: It doesn't matter how you win the game today. You win. You are going to play tomorrow. And tomorrow, you can wake up and have the worst game of your life, or the next hour or the next match, it all disappears.""I love sports. I love the immediate response of a win or a loss. That's the greatest equalizer in life."Racquetball and sports in general:"Racquetball definitely gave me a different view of the world and how I conduct myself in the professional life."Timing:"If I were to summarize my professional racquetball career, these were the two big examples to learn from that: 1. Timing is everything in life, and what you do with that and what you do with that time and that opportunity is important, and 2. then how do you step back and really focus on what's important and how do you make yourself better."Preparing and doing less is more:"And a lot of it was early on; I never allowed myself to be successful because I was chasing a dollar and not preparing. So that's that mentality of how do you learn to be a professional. That was eye-opening. How do you focus on the things that are really impactful?"On transitioning from racquetball to the next chapter of life:"I needed to get to the professional environment and learn a trait or a skill outside of playing racquetball for lack of better terms. So it all kinda worked out, and it was the right time. It wasn't at the time. It was a pretty dark couple of years of my life because everything gets taken away when things are going well. But in the end, it made me realize two things: 1. At anyone one point in time, something can be literally taken away from you, whether you like it or don't like it. 2. So enjoy the moments that you do have with something."
