Part 3 of our Kyoto Vacation is‘Moe Money, Moe Problems: After School Tea-Time with the Girls of K-On!' And today, we're finishing our journey with Hokago Tea Time by following the girls to London for an overseas adventure in K-On! The Movie. Released in 2011 to more or less unprecedented success for this type of anime, the feature film continuation of the series is one of the franchise's finest hours, lushly animated, absolutely hilarious, and incredibly heartfelt, revisiting the events of the series finale to deepen the perspective of the original four club members – Yui, Ritsu, Mio, and Mugi-chan – on a bigger scale than we ever saw in the TV series. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika, Giana, and Crimson, Farris, and Stoney of Anibaes Anime review episodes nineteen through twenty-one of Fruits Basket (2019). In episode 19, the interpretation of the Sohma's acceptance, or lack thereof, of Ritsu's identity differs amongst the ladies. Ritsu's gift of books about fruit as opposed to actual fruit for Tohru also banana splits the ladies' (mainly Giana's) opinions. The non-humor of Mitsuru's drastic measures due to Shigure's antics gets a heavy helping of hot fudge. In episode 20, Hiro Sohma gets on EVERYBODY'S last nerve. Giana mistakes a Twilight quote for some old, fancy poem. While this episode is centered more on Hiro Sohma, Chika points out that it brings more to light about Kisa's trauma and unsettling relationship with her mother. In episode 21, Crimson points out that Matoko's character design could be purposely pinning her as an “anti-Tohru”. The expectations versus reality of Hanajima's home gives everyone a good laugh. Joined by our friend SilentKitten from our Discord (and real life too, I suppose), we join the light music club and rock out to some of our favorite moements (it's a combination of moe and moments!) and ask if 2009's K-on! really is worth being one of the popular anime of that year and maybe in general. Which girl is best? Which girl is worst? Which girl is most mediocre? Why does Ritsu's forehead make me feel weird things? We dive into a discussion on what makes moe and what makes for some great cute comfort as we talk all about the beloved KyoAni's past works and compare them to each other just to see what works and just what doesn't. Is this anime really worth the time or a vast majority of weebs just suckers for moe blobs?
