Linda Christopher, Manager for Grants and Project Development of Riverside Unified School District ("RUSD") shares how as a school district it was decided to pursue a National Science Foundation grant to show themselves as the pioneers in ascertaining funds typically pursued only by higher education directly, yet RUSD is still working with UCR and others. Linda Christopher further discusses the end to end research that focuses on grades K-12 with a specific focus on high school students and the data resulting from the students exposure to air pollution. Linda and her team are a leading example of innovation by her school district because of their pursuit to obtain federal funds which can be a paradigm to other school districts seeking funding in a time of need where innovation, creativity, and collaboration are paramount. Presently most federal research grants are pursued by higher education institutions only.

It’s pretty clear that very few people in education enjoy those typical sit-and-get professional development sessions. And when blended learning gets thrown into the mix, the situation gets even more complicated—what happens when educators seem afraid of products? Who should deliver PD, the administrators or the teachers? Talk to administrators, and they have some answers to these questions—as well as thoughts about what parts of PD should be left far, far behind. At the EdSurge Tech for Schools Summit in Riverside, EdSurge’s own Michelle Spencer led a panel with Steve Kong (instructional services specialist for Riverside Unified School District), Stepan Mekhitarian (blended learning coordinator for Local District Northwest in Los Angeles USD), Brad Hellickson (student advisor for online learning in Corona Norco Unified) and Michelle Clavijo-Diaz (Global Education Solutions Product Line Manager, HP Inc.) to get their thoughts.
Today we re-visit a June 2014 episode with the salad bar gurus at Riverside Unified School District, in southern California. With new technical support for salad bars in schools on the way in CNR 2016, now is the time to take a close second look at a pioneering and celebrated program that still works as safely, profitably, and deliciously as it ever did. “Our attention to detail is what makes us different,” says Chef Ryan Douglas. Learn just what that means—and catch up on what RUSD has been up to since we last checked in.
Are you a salad bar skeptic? If you are, you’re not alone. Many a committed K-12 food service director is hesitant to try, out of concern over participation, waste, expense, mess, and food safety. And now salad bars in schools are seemingly even trickier to pull off. How do you insure that kids are meeting their daily fruit and vegetable quotas–and the required weekly balance of green and orange veggies, and beans and peas–if you let them serve themselves? For answers, we will first turn to school salad bar evangelist Rodney Taylor, from Riverside Unified, and two of his talented staff. This program was sponsored by Tabard Inn “Every kid goes through the salad bar first. At that point they are engaged by an adult on each side who encourage children to eat the colors. We want the plate to be colorful.” [09:00] Rodney Taylor on Inside School Food “I have served over 6 million salad bar meals in Riverside. For those who tell you it places children at risk – I’ll tell you I haven’t lost one child yet.” [15:00] “There’s a level of service we want to be able to provide. Once they [the children] see that you care – it will immediately turn [things] around.” [31:00] — Ryan Douglas on Inside School Food
