Erik Wetterling, Founder and Editor of The Hedgeless Horseman website, joins me to discuss three junior gold resource companies that have released important news catalysts in early 2025, where he is attracted to their current value proposition.   We start off discussing the high-grade gold intercept over a wide width that Goliath Resources Ltd (TSX-V: GOT) (OTCQB: GOTRF) released to the market this morning.  In drill hole# GD-24-260 it intercepted the highest concentration of visible gold and the best high-grade gold drill hole to date at the Surebet Discovery down in the Bonanza Zone, returning 34.52 g/t AuEq (34.47 Au and 3.96 Ag) over 39.00 meters, including 132.93 g/t AuEq (132.78 Au and 12.98 Ag) over 10.00 meters, and 166.04 g/t AuEq (165.84 Au and 16.07 Ag) over 8.00 meters.   Next we pivot over to news released on January 9, 2025 from Amex Exploration Inc. (TSXV: AMX) (OTCQX: AMXEF) that recent drilling has continued to expand the footprint of multiple zones at its flagship Perron Project, located in northwestern Abitibi, Quebec. New exploration results were released from the Denise Zone, E2 Zone, Grey Cat Zone, Gratien Zone, and JT Zone. These high-grade intercepts, have all shown metal factors significantly above this PEA threshold, and the management team released statements indicating that these intercepts will contribute additional ounces to the mine plan.   Wrapping up we got Erik's thoughts on why he is animated by the longer-term value proposition at Osisko Development Corp. (NYSE: ODV, TSXV: ODV) where on Jan. 09, 2025 they announced the appointment of David Rouleau as Vice President, Project Development. This appointment aligns with the Company's strategic focus on building an operations-driven team to advance its flagship 100%-owned Cariboo Gold Project located in central British Columbia, Canada.  Erik expands on the potential to go from their Phase 1 to Phase 2 development plans over the next few years, increasing throughput and ounces produced once a construction decision is made, and that he sees the project to be of significant size in a tier 1 jurisdiction to rerate higher over time.   * In full disclosure, the companies mentioned by Erik in this interview, are positions held in his personal portfolio, and also may be site sponsors of The Hedgeless Horseman website at the time of this recording.  Additionally, Shad holds a position in both Goliath Resources and Amex Exploration at the time of this recording.   Click here to visit Erik's site – The Hedgeless Horseman

Interview with Sam Lee, President & CEO of NorthIsle Copper & Gold Inc.Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/northisle-copper-gold-tsxvncx-strategic-phasing-reduces-capital-requirement-6133Recording date: 11th December 2024NorthIsle Copper & Gold (TSX-V: NCX) is advancing one of British Columbia's largest copper-gold porphyry deposits not currently owned by a major mining company. The company is implementing a strategic phased development approach at its North Island Project, focusing initially on higher-margin resources to optimize project economics. The company recently secured a significant $10 million financing from two major institutional investors - one from the US and one from Canada - demonstrating strong market confidence in the project. These funds will support ongoing exploration and development activities throughout 2025.The initial development phase targets the Northwest Expo and Red Dog zones, which contain approximately 70-100 million tonnes grading 0.50-0.55% copper-equivalent, with a notably higher gold component. This strategic focus on higher-grade mineralization aims to enhance early-stage project economics while reducing initial capital requirements.CEO Sam Lee has outlined the company's transition from its earlier development concept. The previous 2021 PEA envisioned a larger operation with $1.1 billion NPV and $1.4 billion capex, producing approximately 100 million pounds of copper and 100,000 ounces of gold annually. The new approach aims for a more manageable 40,000 tonnes per day operation, compared to the original 70,000-80,000 tonnes per day plan, with increased gold production in the early phase. The project benefits from its location in British Columbia, historically recognized as Canada's copper mining hub. The site leverages over $100 million in existing infrastructure, including paved roads, a deep-water port, and hydroelectric power, significantly reducing development risks and capital requirements.A key upcoming catalyst is the updated Preliminary Economic Assessment, scheduled for Q1 2025. This study will incorporate recent exploration successes and demonstrate the economic advantages of the phased development approach. The investment thesis is supported by strong macro fundamentals, particularly the growing copper demand driven by global electrification and decarbonization initiatives. With few large-scale copper projects available in stable jurisdictions, NorthIsle is well-positioned to benefit from these market dynamics. The company's strategy follows the successful model implemented by Artemis Gold at their Blackwater project, focusing on a phased approach to reduce initial capital requirements while maximizing returns. This approach, combined with strong institutional backing and significant infrastructure advantages, positions NorthIsle to potentially deliver substantial value as it advances toward development. The updated PEA in early 2025 is expected to be a significant milestone in quantifying the economic benefits of this revised development strategy.View NorthIsle Copper & Gold's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/northisle-copper-goldSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

In this episode of Bionic Planet, I delve into the complex and often controversial world of conservation in the Amazon, featuring Michael Greene, a figure recently spotlighted in a Washington Post article that painted him as a land grabber. However, my intention is to provide a more nuanced perspective on his story, which I believe reflects broader challenges in the fight against deforestation. Michael Greene's journey began in 2009 when he entered the tangled legal landscape of land ownership in the Amazon. His work is set against a backdrop of illegal logging, land grabbing, and the struggles of local settlers. The episode explores the threats to the Amazon, particularly in the Portel region, where illegal loggers and wealthy individuals exploit the land, often using deceptive tactics to claim vast areas. Throughout our conversation, we discuss the various actors involved in this crisis, including the legal landowners, illegal loggers, and settlers who are often caught in the middle. Michael shares insights into the "hair comb" pattern of deforestation, where roads are cut into the forest, leading to a gradual encroachment of settlers and illegal loggers alike. As we unpack Michael's project, we examine the strategies he implemented to combat deforestation and support local communities. He highlights the importance of the Cadastro Ambiental Rural (CAR), a mandatory environmental registry that helps families claim their land and protect it from illegal encroachment. Michael's initiative aimed to empower local families by helping them navigate this bureaucratic process, ultimately securing their land rights. However, the episode also addresses the backlash Michael faced from local NGOs and other organizations that accused him of being a land grabber himself. We discuss the complexities of these accusations and the challenges of working in a region where the status quo is heavily influenced by illegal logging and land grabbing. Throughout our two-hour conversation, I aim to provide a balanced view of Michael's work, acknowledging his quirks and the difficulties he has encountered while also emphasizing the positive impact he has had on local communities. This episode serves as a raw and unfiltered look at the challenges of conservation in the Amazon, offering listeners a glimpse into the intricate dynamics at play in the fight against deforestation. Join me as we explore the unfolding saga of Michael Green, a figure who embodies the complexities of conservation efforts in one of the world's most vital ecosystems. With only around 200 GW of the potential 700 GW pipeline needed to meet Great Britain's electricity demand, many projects will never reach completion. Many of these projects will never be completed, and some ‘zombie' projects that are stuck in the queue with no real chance of progressing take up valuable grid connection space. It's becoming clear that the current system, where projects are connected on a ‘first in, first connected' basis, is creating major delays. As critical deadlines approach, there's growing pressure to add more renewable energy and improve the grid connection process. In this episode, Ed Porter is joined by Ed Birkett, Director of New Projects at Low Carbon, UK Development. Over the conversation, they discuss:How changes in Contracts for Difference auctions could help reach net zero targets.Issues with long lead times for integral equipment needed for grid connections. The current state of the grid connection queue and what could be done to improve the system. Insight into the types of costs involved at each stage of the development process for solar. Why we need to find a balance between strategic planning and the market-based approach to connecting to the grid. About our guestLow Carbon's mission is to create renewable power capacity for the world, at scale. How has the IRA affected financing renewables, in particular solar projects? Renewable energy projects are contending with the harsh realities of rising capital costs and shrinking profit margins. Understanding the financial underpinnings of renewable energy ventures is increasingly crucial, particularly for mid-sized and smaller project developers who often face significant challenges in securing sufficient capital to get their solar projects into the pipeline. These obstacles not only threaten the growth of renewable energy but also raise concerns about meeting global sustainability goals. Rob Sternthal, Managing Director at Piper Sandler, brings twenty years of experience in investment banking for the renewable energy sector to bare in this earnest discussion about the realities of the current equities markets and the current financial hurdles faced by project developers. It is increasingly difficult to achieve the returns necessary to finance large-scale renewable projects amidst rising costs and plateauing electricity prices. He delves into the nuances of the current market, including the shift from traditional equity funds to credit funds demanding higher returns in shorter periods. This shift has significant implications for developers, especially smaller ones who struggle with new barriers like hefty letters of credit for interconnection queues. Sternthal's perspective is not just analytical; he offers pragmatic advice for developers, emphasizing the importance of clear exit strategies, the potential of emerging technologies like battery storage, and the strategic positioning of companies for long-term success.Rob Sternthal's decades of primary experience in renewable energy finance provides us a nuanced glimpse into the drivers directly impacting project development. How do you fund a solar project? What about the business operations costs necessary to get the project going to begin with? What structures can you consider, and HOW do you choose the one that's right for you? We're pulling back the veil so you don't have to wander in the darkness here. The business of developing solar power projects is complex, time-consuming, and capital intensive. And for the last decade, hundreds of entrepreneurs have endeavored to apply their creative efforts and work ethic towards solving both the development of the solar projects (not dissimilar to other land-based development deals tbh) and the financing of them. The latter has proven the more arduous to accomplish as the solar industry had to earn its keep in the world of high finance and prove that the product and its cashflow was durable and risk-mitigated. Unsurprisingly, those who have fared the best are those professionals who were already working in finance in some way, and were able to turn their focus and skills to solving the dual issue facing solar developers - how to get an individual project financed, and how to raise enough working capital to pay the team developing those projects until they could get to cashflow. Today, you'll hear hown one such company, Encore Renewable Energy, transformed from a traditional solar project developer into a vertically-integrated Independent Power Producer (IPP), ie a project Owner & OPerator, and along the way made the choice to become a Certified B Corporation. Their impact-focused business strategy, exemplifies the transformative power of renewable energy towards the triple bottom line - People, Planet, and Profits. The company strategically channels its efforts into solar development, storage solutions, agrivoltaics, and brownfield redevelopment, showcasing a multifaceted commitment to sustainable practices. Moreover, they have successfully secured a remarkable $150 million in equity funding. Today, you'll learn a whole lot more about what that means, and how you might be able to do similarly in your own venture.Blake Sturcke, the co-CEO of Encore, delves into his journey of discovering a passion for solar, drawing on his background in investment banking and entrepreneurship.Blake discusses how Encore melds their sustainable mission with practical management strategies, the different investment structures available, insightful capital raising options, and a deeply rooted work culture that celebrates diversity and psychological safety. On this final point, Blake goes deeper still, opening up about his personal experiences dealing with mental health challenges. This vulnerable exchange is particularly near to Blake's own mission, and he hopes to normalize the topic of mental health awareness and create a safe space for employees to voice their struggles. This conversation isn't only vital for those in the renewable energy field, but also illuminates the possibility of merging success with mental wellbeing in any high-pressure corporate setting. All too often, projects are delayed or shelved, which further impedes our progress towards cleaning up the grid. This episode brings together experts across the project supply chain who are committed to overcoming these barriers. Rob Anders from EDP Renewables discusses how they navigate the regulatory labyrinth, while Eric Veuleman from Beta Engineering sheds light on the evolution of construction techniques. Jaime Fernandez of Nextracker offers insights into tackling supply chain issues, and Chris Haltom from TorcSill presents ways technology improvements can fast-track projects. What connects these industry leaders is their emphasis on the human element — they reiterate that early community engagement and focus on job creation is as essential as technical adaptation.
