Shirley Stancato is known for her leadership in Detroit and enduring commitment to social justice. She talks with Denise about the New Detroit coalition, race relations, and dealing with adversity. “Having conversations about race helps leaders in their organizations”. Top down, leaders and educators must set standards for interaction and rules of engagement. For an honest and productive discussion we need a no fault environment and a focus on the issue rather than an individual. She also poignantly reminds us that even if you are alone in your opinion, it doesn't mean that you are wrong. Shirley shares personal stories of growing up and having responsibilities of an adult while still a child herself. Tune in to hear about empathy, ethical decision-making, inclusivity, and a vision for positive change. Shirley Stancato is a seasoned executive, a prominent civic leader, expert on race relations and social justice advocate. She serves on the Board of Governors for Wayne State University as well as on the boards of Fifth Third Bank of Eastern Michigan, Teach for America Detroit, The Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Zoological Commission. She received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from Wayne State University. In 2017, she received an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Michigan. Stancato's recent honors include the Champion of Justice Award from the Michigan Delegation of the Congressional Black Caucus, and City Year Detroit's Idealist in Action Award. Additionally, she has been recognized as a Woman of Achievement by the Anti-Defamation League, Regional Power Broker by Crain's Detroit Business and Michiganian of the Year by The Detroit News. Denise Ilitch, an owner of Ilitch Family Companies and President of Ilitch Enterprises, has been a part of Detroit's business and philanthropic community for over 40 years. As a mother, lawyer, entrepreneur, devoted community servant and tireless advocate for women and children, she learned early, from her father, that everyone is worthy of contributing to the world. Her passion for affordable, accessible, quality education stems from her own experience as a first-generation student, earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, where she currently serves on the Board of Regents, and a law degree from the University of Detroit Law School. When he arrived in the brand new city of Indianapolis in 1821, Calvin Fletcher was nearly penniless. Yet he went on to become the first attorney in the new state capital city, a banker, a state legislator and a wealthy landowner. Fletcher, who was passionately anti-slavery, also became the first major civic leader in his adopted hometown. To top it off, Fletcher (1798-1866) wrote an astounding, nine-volume diary. Since its publication by the Indiana Historical Society, the extensive diary has become a trove for anyone seeking insights about daily life in early Indianapolis. In his diary, Fletcher described everything from the weather to events, large and small, in Indianapolis. A native of Vermont (Fletcher was just 17 when he left his family's home), the self-made early power broker became the patriarch of a family that was prominent in the city for many generations. As his wealth increased, Calvin Fletcher moved into various houses, but for a long period he lived at Wood Lawn, a farmhouse he built on his 269-acre farm in what's now the Fletcher Place Neighborhood just south of downtown Indy. Fletcher also owned vast amounts of property elsewhere in the city and state, including large tracts of farmland in Hamilton County.

Hi James Navé here, your host for Twice 5 Miles Radio. I'm pleased to welcome civic leader Stephanie Swepson Twitty to the microphone. Stephanie was born and now lives in Old Fort, North Carolina, surrounded by the Pisgah National Forest. I recently worked with Stephanie on the TEDx Asheville speaker selection committee. I was inspired to interview her because of her insightful questions to the speaking candidates. I also learned that Stephanie has a way of applying big world thinking to small-town living, thus the title of this show. Small Town Living. Big World Thinking. In this conversation, Stephanie talks about what it was like growing up in a small rural town that has a population of only 1000. Yet, even with its small population, Old Fort has embarked on a very ambitious modern project designed to imagine forward a bright future that will draw people from all over the world to visit, work, and play. Stephanie also discusses her job as the CEO of Eagle Market Streets Development Corporation, which funds development projects around Western North Carolina. When I asked Stephanie what inspired the name Eagle in the title of her development corporation, she said Eagle Street was the center of the African-American business community in Asheville for many years. She thinks the term eagle might reference Friday being payday and the song Stormy Monday which says the Eagle Flies on Friday, and after that, you spend your dollars on the weekend. No matter where the name Eagle comes from, Stephaine talks a great deal about how African-American communities like the Eagle Street area in Asheville have gone through many ups and downs over the years. And finally, Stephanie and I talked about our shared excitement about the upcoming TED ask Asheville event in 2022. My conversation with Stephaine lasted 40 minutes. You'll be glad to know I have filled out the rest of the hour with a discussion on how to prepare yourself to give a TED talk. Although it's impossible to cover all the essential speaking points in such a short time, when you listen to my thoughts, you will have a fair idea of what to do next in preparing for your talk or upcoming speech, TED or otherwise. Enjoy the conversation.

These past few weeks, many Americans’ eyes have finally been opened to the injustices that have been so deeply ingrained in every system of the “land of the free”. Yet still, so many Americans are left wondering what they can do to help right these wrongs. This week, we brought on Abdul Omari, Ph.D., CEO and Founder of AMO Enterprise, a training institute that specializes in leadership development, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Abdul was also born, raised, and still resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where a black American, George Floyd, was recently murdered by a white police officer, sparking an uprising of protests across the country demanding equality and justice for black Americans. In this interview, Abdul gives us deeper insight into what he calls the paradox of Minnesota. It’s a place that is consistently ranked so high compared to other cities for its arts scene, education, parks, and healthcare, yet has the biggest racial disparities in the country for things like unemployment and education. He describes what Cultural Intelligence is and what leaders can do to start implementing effective change in their organizations when it comes to developing a more inclusive workplace. We wrap up with what is meant by black people when they ask non-black people to just LISTEN, and how communities can begin to start healing. For full show notes, please visit https://www.baktashahadi.com/podcastConnect with Abdul Omari:https://www.abdulmomari.com/Follow/Support Stories of Transformation and Baktash Ahadi:Donate to the production of this podcast Follow on Instagram Follow on Facebook Produced by: Dana DrahosEdited by: Joseph Gangemi Digital Marketing by: Katherine An Theme music by: Qais Essar Artwork by: Masheed Ahadi

Agents now are about recruiting and retention; my father modeled agents as advocates.” – Mark ShapiroHow the Shapiro's approach negotiations: “In the corporate world, in the baseball world, in any world you want to do good deals and you want the other side to feel that they've got a good deal, but you want to have a working relationship to build on that after the fact.” – Ron ShapiroOn the effects of COVID-19: “Our country is becoming more and more divided economically and from a survival point of view.” – Ron ShapiroOn our future with COVID-19: “People make predictions, but that's all they are is predictions. In 2017, she spearheaded the launch of the Sage Future Makers Lab, a forum that will equip young people around the world with hands-on learning for entering a career in Artificial Intelligence.
