Emma and Gil welcome Adrienne Smith, designer of the card game Blitz Champz and wide receiver for the Boston Renegades women's gridiron football team. We discuss the intersection of mass market, kids, and sports game design, the state of women's football in modern America, and serial entrepreneurship. This episode was recorded on November 16, 2020. A couple of weeks later, Vanderbilt brought their varsity women's soccer goalie, Sarah Fuller, onto their men's football team as a kicker. Note: This will be the last Ludology episode of 2020! We are taking our annual winter break, during which time there will be no episodes of Ludology, Biography of a Board Game, or GameTek. We will return on January 10, 2021 with our annual "State of the Industry" episode with the Podfather, Stephen Buonocore. “It’s so easy to fall in love with roller derby when you’re part of something bigger than yourself that pushes you.” We have a special guest this week -- Loren Mutch!! After starting out in junior derby, Loren Mutch became a jammer for the Rose City Rollers in Portland, Oregon. She played in the gold medal game at WFTDA Championships the last six years in a row! The Rose City Rollers’ all-star roller derby team brought home their fourth international championship trophy in November. We sit down with the co-captains of the team, Elicia Nisbet-Smith and Nicole Williams, who competes under the name Bonnie Thunders.
Loren Mutch is a skater with the Rose City Rollers, one of the best roller derby teams in the world. In 2014, she was crowned Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) MVP, and went on to help her team win back to back world championships in 2015 and 2016. Earlier this summer, Payson caught up with Loren at her home in Portland, Oregon where they got philosophical about social media, discussed the type of training required for such a unique sport, and connected over tattoos and a shared love of basketball.
Oregon Treasurer Tobias Read and Executive Director of the Rose City Rollers Kim Stegeman talk about “Oregon Saves,” a first-of its kind work-and-save program. Read says the program is getting nation-wide attention, while Stegeman talked about the Rose City Rollers using Oregon Saves. This episode originally aired on KGW News on Aug. 3, 2019.

When and how did you first learn to knit? I think it was in 2014, and I learned by watching YouTube videos. Every time I encountered a new stitch or technique I would just watch videos and practice until I figured it out. My own grandmothers had long since stopped knitting by the time I had an interest, but I’m hoping to teach my daughter in a few more years. What was your first project? A cotton dishcloth. I knit 3 of them on some terrible plastic needles from Michael’s, but despite some dropped stitches and random yarn overs, they are still workhorses stashed away with my cleaning supplies! What is your biggest knitting disaster? Hmm. Nothing comes to mind really. I tend to stop long before something ends disastrously (in knitting..not necessarily in life!). I knit a Gaptastic Cowl as one of my earliest projects, before I knew what gauge was, and it was monstrously huge. I’m talking, could-have-clothed-a-linebacker big. Needless to say, it got frogged! What are you most proud of as a knitter? I’m proud to create beautiful, useful, long lasting items that can be tangible examples for my loved ones of how much I care about them (because it’s a big time & energy investment!). And, when I knit for myself, I’m proud to engage in an activity that is a powerful act of self care both in the actual making of the thing, and then in the wearing of it. It really feels like I’m nurturing myself when I cast on something lovely with only myself in mind. We should really call it self-love knitting, rather than selfish knitting! What are you favorite items to knit? Stuffed toys for the important tiny humans in my life, and shawls for myself Are you a process knitter or a product knitter? I’m both! I used to be more of a product knitter but the more time goes on the more I’ve found that the act of knitting has become incredibly important to my well being. I’m a stay-at-home parent now, and it is hands down the most difficult job I’ve ever had (and I used to literally save babies for a living as an NICU nurse). Knitting allows me to satisfy so many of own needs: for mental stimulation, quiet alone time, and creative expression, all of which are hard to come by at this stage of my life. So, process has become extremely important to me as well. That said, I can’t fully engage in a project unless the finished object is something I’m excited to gift or wear. What it will be definitely still matters. Do you have any knitting goals? Projects? Techniques? I’d love to learn brioche, dive into sweater making, and eventually learn enough of the math involved to begin tech editing. Math doesn’t come easily to me, but I love editing. I can learn, right? Do you do any other fiber arts other than knitting? Not yet, but I have grand plans to learn embroidery, weaving, sewing, and rug punching. I want to learn it all! Especially sewing, I am most excited about eventually being able to make my own clothes and stop relying on fast fashion, which isn’t in line with my values and not the example for resource stewardship that I want to set for my daughter. But because she is so little, and free time is so scarse, new hobbies have to wait a while. Do you have any other super powers other than knitting? Momming. Thats a super power right?? I never really felt that i had a “true calling” until my child was born. Mothering, while certainly not all unicorns and rainbows, is really a natural aptitude for me. I’m good at it, and I love it (most days). I used to be a pretty good writer too, back in the day, and I can pick up new languages easily. I’m also a PADI Divemaster, which means I can teach some scuba diving courses and guide other divers around sites. I’m an excellent shark spotter! If there is one to be found or spotted in the distance, I promise i’ll see it. Anything else you’d like to tell the world? (shameless self promotion!) I’m incredibly passionate about feminism (intersectional or bust), and birth and the myriad of ways the two intersect. And I’ll happily chat about either with anyone, anytime! Adventures in Mommyhood Emily- Tooth pop!! Nap schedule has been terrible! THREENAGER temper tantrums. Karla- So stoked and so bummed Inquiring minds Tell us about you! Join us on Ravelry or our Facebook page
We are super excited to be chatting with you today as we have another interview that we recorded during our time at the Edinburgh Yarn Festival last month. Nancy Marchant joins us as our special guest today to talk to us about tuck stitches, texture, and of course brioche too! Announcements: First up, a shout out to Charlotte Parfitt who was the winner of the pair of weekend passes to Woollinn in Dublin What we’re working on: Allison has been plugging away on and (mostly) monogamous to her Impressionists MKAL by Helen Stewart. The final clue has just been released so only 20% left to go! When the project has been too big to travel with Allison has also had a pair of Rose City Rollers ankle socks with her and she’s mostly finished sewing a pair of wool trousers – that it is now too hot too wear. Rachel has been flying through Marginalia (or was until this week and 27 degree weather!) She’s finished the body and made a start on the first sleeve. She’s dug into some deep deep fibre stash and found some silk/wool batts that she’s been struggling with a bit. Beyond that the weather has gotten too nice to do anything but sit outside in the garden, so there’s been a lot of that. Talking about Tuck Stitches with special guest Nancy Marchant: As we’ve been chatting about Yarn Adventures this year we didn’t want the conversation to be limited to travels or places you could go with your knitting. Which got us thinking – what if the adventure were learning a new technique and expanding your knitting repertoire? In that spirit, we got to chat with Nancy Marchant at EYF. The Queen of Brioche was kind enough to take some time out of her packed schedule to talk with us about her newest book, Tuck Stitches: Sophistication in Handknitting. A heads up for our listeners – we recorded this interview with Nancy in the café at the Corn Exchange so there is some background noise and the odd café latte being made in the background! *** Wrap up: Many thanks for joining us for another episode! You can find the podcast on iTunes and Stitcher Radio (please rate, review and subscribe!) and you'll find us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, in our Yarn in the City group on Ravelry, or in person on Wednesday nights at our knit night between 7 and 10pm at The Breakfast Club on Battersea Rise. You can purchase a pdf copy of this book on Ravelry for $18 or a hard copy plus a code for the pdf version on the Dragonfly Fibers website. The book is unusual in that it is centered around Dragonfly Fibers colorways based on fine art. We both thought all of the featured colorways were beautiful. The book has 15 patterns that would be suitable for almost any level of knitter. There are simple projects for beginners as well as more complex projects for knitters with more experience. Basically, something for everyone! We had a little trouble with the format at first as it came up on our devices with two pages at a time, which made it difficult to follow. Wendy discovered by accident that if she sized the page up to fit only one page on the screen, it shifted to a one page at a time format, which made it much easier to read. The patterns range from simple hats to sweaters, and include techniques like intarsia, cabling and textured stitches. We really liked a lot of the patterns, most of which would work great with semi-solid and more variegated yarns. The sweater patterns do come in some larger sizes for knitters who need them. This book is definitely worth a look, especially if you love Dragonfly Fibers or fine art. It is definitely a collection that will have you knitting more than one pattern. We will be giving away a copy of this book in episode 246. After a brief stint at the "spa" to deal with their "exhaustion", Jenny and Sean are back. Today they have an old friend back in the studio to say hi. Mr. Todd Werkhoven adds his special spin as the three of them revisit a classic, The Princess Bride. Jenny has a Tough Question for Sean, the first round of their weekly trivia challenge happens, Killer Beer Week is coming up and what should you expect, Fargo coming to the small screen, more Honey Boo Boo on the way, a sad loss for Rose City Rollers, are there any natural blondes named Debbie, Fresh Hopped Beer festival is coming up, what is Gangnam Style, what non-local podcasts are you listening to, and an update on the Yeast Beard Beer from Rogue. A big thanks to Mainbrew, and to Todd for putting up with us today. But it really did kind of rock! Thanks for listening.
