What Boston sports team won five national championships in the last six years? Hint: it wasn't the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics or Bruins. The answer: the Boston Renegades, a women's football team. While the local women's teams that have been winning championship after championship, they've received much less fanfare than their male counterparts at Fenway or Gillette Stadium. "Sports aren't inherently male, but in so many spaces we've come to accept them as such," said Rev. Laura Everett, author of the blog, Boston Women's Sports. "We have national and world champions playing locally, but they're not getting the coverage they deserve. Whereas so often women's sports teams are expected to prove that they're worthy, when the men's teams are just presumed that they are." But soccer fans may have reason to rejoice — a bid to bring a new national women's soccer team to Boston could materialize in coming years. Some experts hope it could be the catalyst for local women's teams to finally get the respect and higher profile they have earned. "It's exciting to think that women's pro soccer will be back, hopefully, in Boston and exciting because it's a sport and a league, the NWSL, that's really on the rise. It will be great to have Boston be part of that women's sports conversation nationally." GUESTS Shira Springer, sports journalist and lecturer in Managerial Communication at MIT Reverend Laura Everett, executive director of the Massachusetts Council of Churches, author of the blog, Boston Women's Sports

Yes, you read that headline correctly, there is yet another Tampa Bay team competing for a championship! The Tampa Bay Inferno plays in the Women's Football Alliance (WFA), and the team owner, Jen Moody, joins Ian and Jay on Friday to talk about her team's quest. The team is in Boston for a semifinal matchup Saturday against the Boston Renegades. The winner goes on to play in the WFA National Championship at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio on Saturday, July 24! The Renegades are the defending champs, and Moody says the Inferno needs to maintain discipline and minimize mistakes. Adrienne Smith is a Team USA football star leading the charge for the new AFL women's division. She is among the best performing wide receivers in women's tackle football history. Adrienne is a Boston Renegades wide receiver, football advocate and spokesperson, Orange is the New Black actress, and entrepreneur. She is also the creator of Blitz Champz, a fun and competitive game that teaches and tests football knowledge, strategy, and critical math skills. Adrienne’s professional career began in Japan where she worked as a translator and coordinator of international relations for the Japanese Board of Education. During her two years in this position, she produced and co-hosted a local television show geared towards educating Japanese people about American culture. Adrienne started her football career in 2006 as a member of the New York Sharks and went on to compete internationally, bringing home silver medals in Sweden and Canada as a member of the US Women's National Flag Football team. In 2010 and 2013, Adrienne helped the US National Women's Football team bring home the gold medal in the International Federation of American Football's Women's World Championship. Since 2011, she has played for the Boston Renegades, a tackle football team in the Women's Football Alliance and winner of national championships in 2011, 2014, and 2019. In this episode… Working in male-dominated fields is often a challenge many women face, even when they are highly skilled and qualified. They frequently face backlash and pressure from society — which can kill their dreams. When Adrienne Smith decided to go into football, she knew she would face such challenges. However, she did not quit, and her determination helped her excel in not only football but also in her career as an actress, entrepreneur, and leader. Adrienne Smith, an entrepreneur and football star, is Andrea Heuston's guest in this episode of the Lead Like A Woman Show. Adrienne talks about her professional career in football and her journey to become an entrepreneur. She also talks about her football card game for kids, her work as an actress, organizing hip hop tours, and how she leads like a woman. Stay tuned.
She’d just give it a shot. That’s how tackle football started for Whitney Zelee. Twice a week, after long days at work, she’d travel to late night practices with the Boston Militia (now Boston Renegades). Soon, the sport gave her an intensely bonded community, a partner, and a sense of purpose beyond what she could have ever anticipated. Life as a star running back though took a toll on her body. After 4 major surgeries in 3 years, she made the decision to retire from the sport that unexpectedly nudged its way into her heart and transformed her life. Listen now on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
**Content warning: this episode discusses physical, sexual, and emotional abuse within Canadian soccer.** In this episode of The End of Sport, Johanna and Derek are joined for a second time by Ciara McCormack, a former professional soccer player with the Vancouver Whitecaps and whistleblower on abuses within the Canadian soccer system, about the physical emotional abuse that former coach Bob Birarda inflicted upon players. In the second of a two-part show, Ciara walks us through what it was like to return to the Whitecaps years after experiencing abuse from Bob Birarda and team and, fascinatingly, talks about what ultimately led up to the release of “A Horrific Canadian Soccer Story” and how it was received by the team, fans, and media (who, unsurprisingly, were not very supportive). In the balk half of the episode, Ciara talks about what is next now that Bob Birarda has been arrested and charged. We finish with a discussion about the wonderful work Ciara is doing to change the sport for younger generations. Ciara McCormack is a former college and professional soccer player who played soccer at Yale University and the University Connecticut, and later professionally for a wide variety of top teams for 7 years ranging from the Boston Renegades and Vancouver Whitecaps Women to teams in Denmark, Norway, and Australia. She also played for the Republic of Ireland from 2008-2014. She was the 1st Canadian player to make it to the Champions League Final. To top off her achievements, she also has a whopping total of 3 Master's degrees on subjects related to women's soccer. Importantly, Ciara has spoken out publicly about the verbal, emotional, and sexual abuse that she experienced on the Whitecaps and in Canadian soccer. Finally, Ciara is the founder of Girls Can Soccer and TOPP Soccer, both of which we will certainly get to in the interview. You can find Ciara on Twitter! In the first of a two-part show, Ciara details her own background in soccer and what led to her professional career in Vancouver before shifting focus to her whistleblowing on the harms being done to athletes in the system. The show then quickly turns to a discussion of everything leading up to Ciara's decision to post a widely influential blog in 2019, “A Horrific Canadian Soccer Story.” Ciara paints a bleak and absolutely necessary picture of problems in Canadian soccer, Canadian sport more generally, and a system that is built upon the centralization of top-down power in the sport. And…as you would expect, we even get into media complicity in the whole thing. We all know baseball as one of America’s fondest pastimes, but did you know there’s a version of the sport designed specifically for the blind? It’s called Beep Ball, and the players, with the exception of the pitcher, are all visually impaired. Founded by the National Beep Ball Association in 1976, there are now more than 200 teams in the United States alone with interest in the sport growing quickly among players abroad. For his debut book of creative nonfiction, Beep: Inside the Unseen World of Baseball for the Blind (Swallow Press, 2018), author David Wanczyk spent over three years interviewing dozens of Beep baseball players, coaches, volunteers, and fans in order to create a living profile of the sport and many of its star athletes. A diehard baseball fan himself, Wanczyk takes the reader deep into the culture of Beep Ball, traveling across the United States, Taiwan, and the Dominican Republic, to follow teams like the Austin Blackhawks, the Athens Timberwolves, the Indy Thunder, the Boston Renegades and Taiwan Homerun for a chance to hear their stories and share their passion for the sport with the world in one of the first-ever books written on contemporary Beep baseball. Here to discuss Beep on the New Books Network today, please welcome David Wanczyk. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
