The great thing about the PSP is you can craft as much or as little as you want and still have a chance to win!   Events Wayland Winter Farmers' Market- Farm Fiber Days: January 19 & March 9, 2025 at Russell's Garden Center in Wayland, MA New England Farm & Fiber Festival: February 2 from 11a-5p at the Cyclorama in Boston   Contest, News & Notes   My friend Linda is looking for donations of warm handknit/crocheted items for adult and youth homeless in Massachusetts. Anything warm is welcome!   I also talked about Socks for Sam. Check out their website. You can raise awareness for VWM by knitting a sock using #SocksForSam and tagging @Knitsocksforsam.    Life in Focus I shared some updates about Mom's new cancer treatments and recent hospital stays.   On a Happy Note I'm finding it very hard to be happy after the US election, but I try hard to look for these happy notes. As Gretchen Rubin reminded us on a recent episode of the Happier Podcast it is not selfish or unimportant to look for ways to be happy even when and especially when life feels really hard. When we are happier, we can do more to assert our values in the world and do hard things, so I started this segment with that reminder. Knitting on Hattie's socks and Sue's Instagram live on the day after the election helped me through a very difficult day. Halloween! Leaning into connecting with my people- whether that's work, friends, family, knitting community. Its small but its powerful. During Mom's first infusion, we played UNO. Mom slaughtered us! Dad got up and jokingly said he was going to smother her with a pillow before she could beat us any further and she was laughing so hard she almost offed herself! That was a bit of levity we all needed that night. We watched G&Z while their parents went out for their anniversary and again on Veteran's Day. Date night with Dan between Mom's treatments. I had a delicious pumpkin beer- Night Shift Pumpkin Piescraper Pumpkin Pie Ale. I went to see & Juliet with Megg, Terri, Liz and Riley. Then I had a sleepover at my brothers where Riley, Millie and I inadvertently had a matching PJs night.   Quote of the Week   “The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.” ― G.K. From in her yarn shop on Bainbridge Island, WA to Flock Fiber Festival, a yarn show in Seattle, WA, celebrating a love of all things wool, the fibers arts community is so very lucky to have these two spaces to come together and celebrate these things that we love and bring us the more joy! Jen hopped on a ferry and headed to out Bainbridge to chat with Jess about La Mercerie and their new space (which... spoiler alert was the home of Churchmouse Yarns for years!) and also how Flock is growing in it's second year and the things that she's doing to keep it so very special. So grab your WIP and hit record and we hope to see you at Flock Fiber Festival! You know how there's always someone who not only goes the extra mile, but looks good while they do it?  And does it with a genuine smile, to top it off.  That's Christine Hulse, from Hulse Hill Farm.  Just outside of Cooperstown on a little slice of heaven, this tireless woman has set up shop (and her farm shop).  She excels at all things she puts her mind to:  She runs a blissful farm stay B&B and is a hostess extraordinaire; she's a businesswoman and the co-owner of her fiber company Clean Cashmere; she's a member of the Board of Directors for the Cashmere Goat Association, and she's gracious as all heck.  And, of course, every animal on the place seems to think she's Dr. Dolittle.  Martha Stewart, look out. We've met the hubby and think he's pretty darn nice as well, but he's going to have to step lively to keep up with this one, because she's as fantastic as could be.  He probably agrees with us, we think.(And did we mention that she understands the blissful joy of organic cotton sheets, good coffee and real half and half?  Zen, defined.)Links:https://hulsehillfarm.com/https://www.cleancashmere.farm/https://cashmeregoatassociation.org/https://americangoatfederation.org/https://www.goatusa.org/Support the show

Hour 1 The Lions upset the Chiefs last night and it was a terrible loss for Kansas City. The main reason they lost is former Giants WR Kadarius Toney. There were some clock management issues for the Chiefs as they went for it on 4th and 25 late with all 3 timeouts and the 2 minute warning. Gio does not like the Lions and he's already sick of the hype around this team. Jerry is here for his first update and has clips of Adam Schein saying how the Chiefs were going to win no problem. Jared Goff and Dan Campbell talked about the big win. Andy Reid is disappointed and Patrick Mahomes said he has not lost faith in Toney after the drops. A college football player had his ear ripped off this past weekend. The Yankees 5-game win streak came to an end against the Tigers. Carlos Rodon said he ‘got his ass whooped'. A protestor glued his feet to the ground at the US Open. In the final segment of the hour, Eddie is not here today because he's at the Sheep & Fiber Festival with his wife, an independent yarn dyer. Hour 2 Gio does not believe the Cowboys should be favored Sunday night at MetLife Stadium. Boomer said the Giants need to keep Micah Parsons in check if they're going to win. The Giants need domination from their defensive line and Daniel Jones needs to be throwing for 300 yards a game. We also talked about Eric Bienemy no longer being in KC and what he can do for the Commanders. Boomer wonders if the Saudis will try to start a league to compete against the NFL. Jerry returns for an update and has all the sound from last night's Lions win over the Chiefs. Kadarius Toney dropped a lot of balls. Patrick Mahomes was embarrassed by the loss. The Cowboys have a hologram Jerry Jones at the stadium. Mark Schlereth is not a fan of Jerry Jones and the Cowboys. In the final segment of the hour, former NY Giant Justin Tuck is in the studio talking Giants/Cowboys and being the Dad of a 13 year old soccer player. Hour 3 Gio loves JustinTuck and said it's difficult to not like the Giants now. The pundits seemed to like the Lions going into this season and they beat the Chiefs last night so we're going to get more pundits liking the Lions. Boomer said the pundits also like the Giants and Jets. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the Lions beating the Chiefs last night. Aaron Rodgers has a lot of messages for the team that are ‘esoteric in nature'. Jerry has some Mike Tomlin-sims that are favorites of Mike Tomlin himself. The Yankees 5-game win streak came to an end last night. Anthony Rizzo was ejected from the bench for criticizing the umps. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about Aaron Rodgers and the Jets in comparison to Tom Brady joining the Bucs and Peyton Manning joining the Broncos. A caller says he once chucked a pretzel at the Jets huddle in 1994. Hour 4 We start the hour with audio from the Jets game where a caller chucked a pretzel at the huddle. Pt 3 of our series that features Flock Fiber Festival meet & greet sneak peeks and the best wifi that Seattle's Parks department has to offer (lol) is here! This was our 1st festival partnership in this capacity. Meeting everyone and collecting their inspiring stories was so special, but we learned a lot! I cover some of those learnings and of course, you'll hear how these vendors we chatted with began their journeys as a maker! We also have a special peek into how 4 small businesses in WA work together to create beautiful fiber magic! Andrea of Apple Yarns-  With my husband, Andrew Evans, we started Apple Yarns in Bellingham, WA, in 2007 in a 700 sqft retail store.  Today Apple Yarns is made up of 4 unique divisions; in-person, online, subscriptions, and wholesale and we now occupy 4,000sq. ft. in Bellingham. In addition to loving colorful fiber, knitting, and crochet, one of the things that makes us unique is my love of small business.  Jeananne of Cerulean Orchid- An online yarnie boutique and pattern house. We explore our curiosities and nerdom through yarn, patterns, stickers, project bags, and other yarnie goodies in collaboration with our favorite creatives. Jean of Juni and Si - I started dyeing out of curiosity for how it was done and quickly realized I loved seeing my ideas put to yarn. Before I had a plan, I knew I wanted to name my colorways after songs I love. To me, music and color are a perfect match. Both can ignite inspiration, spark a memory or even convey a person's mood without words. Jessica of Purls and Postulates - Aside from inspiring the name for her small business, Jessica's passion for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and cultivating that passion in others helped her lead a successful career in education for almost a decade before she turned her focus to dyeing yarns and ensuring her two boys grow up with an enthusiasm for learning.Ashleigh of Sewrella - Based in Apex, North Carolina, thousands of skeins of our whimsical, magical colorways get dyed every week for our preorder collections and in-stock tonals. We believe in the maker's experience being an indulgent one, complete with curated tools, housemade wool wash, hand cream formulated for makers, and so much more.Reshma of Hello Lavender -  I launched Hello Lavender in 2016. I started by going to craft fairs and selling knitwear online but then transitioned into making polymer clay stitch markers and earrings in 2020, which took off in a way I could never have imagined. Fibershed Chat - Sarah from San Juan Woolworks, Jess from Skagit Woolen Works, Lydia of Abundant Earth, and Emily of Local Color - A chat about the ways their businesses collaborate to make local yarn and fiber in western Washington, from raising the sheep and dye plants to carding and spinning.Music by Despatches.

As you might have heard, Flock Fiber Festival's inaugural weekend went off without a dropped stitch. ;) What an energy in that place. Just a lovely fiber festival in an old airplane hanger filled with an incredible community of makers and the best wifi that Seattle's Parks department can provide.  ;)We sat down with some of the vendors and recorded meet and greets, in hopes of bringing a little Flock to those who could not make it or wanted to know more about the vendors that brought all their artistic beauty to year one.  Stay tuned for part 2!  Full meet & greet videos coming to the Making app soon!Rachelle of Moondrake Co. - An indie dyed yarn company, comprises a tantalizing array of colors and fibers. A Canadian now living a creative life in Oklahoma. A proud Asian maker, who loves knitting/crocheting/sewing. She is always interested in finding new materials and trendy colors for her dye work.Bethany and Rhys of Woolberry Fiber Co. - We are a family-owned yarn company specializing in hand-dyed yarns sourced from ethical farming practices. Bethany and Rhys run the business together along with our team of yarn assistants at our studio in the Denver metro area. Britt of The Makers of Color Collective and KnotBadBritt -  Britt Garber is the crochet designer behind KnotBadBritt. She focuses on crochet shawls with impeccable drape and unique construction. Unable to ignore the lack of diversity in the fiber industry, she was driven to establish the Makers Of Color Collective, which serves as a directory of black, brown, indigenous, and melanated people in the fiber industry. The Collective is a donation-funded resource hosted on her website that allows individuals to discover new ways of diversifying their craft.Kim of Indigodragonfly - Indigodragonfly yarns offers our individual and unique takes on traditional yarn dyeing, refusing to be a cog in the cookie-cutter yarn industry. We specialize in luxury yarns with an emphasis on finding the best yarns as well as developing custom yarns with our global-wide mill partners to bring you products no one else has. Veronica from Miss Babs -  Babs and the Miss Babs Team have been dyeing beautiful yarns in our studio in the mountains of eastern Tennessee since 2005. Miss Babs offers a wide variety of yarn bases from lace to chunky in a stunning range of colorways. For us, creating color is curiosity, joy, artistic expression, and often a quest to find that precise just-right hue. Courtney from Silly Goose Yarns - We're about spreading joy and wonder through our playful, unexpected approach to creating and naming our products. With a mischievous twinkle in our eye, we infuse every skein of yarn with a playful spirit that inspires and intrigues makers of all levels, encouraging them to approach their craft with the same sense of unexpected delight. Music by Despatches.

007: I'm Just a Teenage Knitter, Baby. Released May 7, 2019 In this episode, Anne realizes she knits like a teenager lives, and that's ok. Winner-winner! Congratulations to BohneJl on Ravelry who won the giveaway from episode 6! The prize was a bag from LittleComfortsAtoZ, a hank of hand-spun alpaca, and a set of stitch markers. Enjoy them! To celebrate the winner coming from the Ravelry group, there was a bonus giveaway added for those who are members. Check the thread for details. This additional giveaway will likely be repeated in the future, so be sure to join the group Progress on the Master Hand Knitter Program Anne began work on her seed stitch scarf to practice for the swatch, and found that by pushing the stitches so the next few stitches were on the tapered area of the needle, she could create a more uniform fabric. Progress! Ooh, la la! Not perfect, but getting better! It also helped to only work on it when she can give it her complete attention. Multi-tasking has been relegated to the land of mythology, and Anne has learned this lesson herself, finding that when she gives her knitting her full attention, she creates a more consistent fabric. Knitter's Pride Spring Charity KAL and CAL for Warm Up America! Got some acrylic yarn lying around you don't know what to do with? Between projects and want to stay productive? Be sure to take a look at the Ravelry thread for the Knitter's Pride Spring Charity KAL/CAL. All the details and the form to submit with your knitted or crocheted squares are available there. It launched on May 1 and runs until May 31! There's a chance to win a set of needles or hooks from Knitter's Pride, so get crackin'! Connecticut Sheep, Wool, and Fiber Festival Anne made it to the Connecticut Sheep, Wool, and Fiber Festival in April with her family. It was a nice blend of demonstrations, animals, and shopping. She was able to pick up some goodies from Yankee Knitter Designs, Katrinkles, 7th Floor Yarn, Once Upon a Corgi, and others. Listen to the podcast for the details on her haul. Giveaway Anne picked up a selection of items at the festival to gift to a lucky listener. To enter, follow her on Instagram and join the Ravelry group (one entry for each). Also, find the episode thread on the Ravelry group and share a family-friendly story from your own teen years that makes you laugh now. The storytellers among you will get 5 entries for sharing! The episode 7 giveaway is a selection of items bought at the Connecticut Sheep, Wool, and Fiber Festival, as well as a set of stitch markers from Anne's remaining inventory. Upcoming Events Anne should be attending the Massachusetts Sheep and Woolcraft event on May 25th at the Cummington Fairgrounds. If you would like to say hi, send her a message with an idea of where and when to meet up. (Anne suggests noon at the ring where the sheep sheering will be taking place, but she's never been, so that may not be the best idea! In July, she hopes to spend a few days completing the I-91 Yarn Shop Hop. Eleven shops in 4 days? Sounds like a dream! 006: I Went to London and All I Got Was This Yarn Released April 23, 2019 In this episode, Anne announces the winner of the last giveaway, talks about her trip to London, and announces another giveaway! Winner! Congratulations to Euphistic81 on Instagram, who won the giveaway announced in episode 5 from Dragonfly Fibers and Knitter's Pride! London! Anne and her daughter visited two fashion-related sites in London, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Fashion and Textile Museum, as well as the Fashion Museum in Bath. The V&A was hosting special exhibits about Dior and Mary Quant, but also has a permanent exhibit that includes knitwear. The Fashion and Textile Museum rotates it's exhibits frequently. Even if they aren't showing knitwear at the time, this small museum is very informative! The Fashion Museum in Bath walks you through centuries of fashion through 100 representative outfits, as well as hosting an additional exhibit that changes from time to time. The Mary Quant exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum featured a hand-knit dress surrounded by several of the knitting and sewing patterns Quant created so people could make their own versions of her designs. Some of her knitting patterns are available as PDFs from sellers on Etsy. Three Yarn Shops to Visit The Village Haberdashery is located in the West Hampstead area of London, just a short walk from the nearest Underground station. It focuses mainly on yarn and fabric crafts, but is a great little all-around craft store. Liberty London is well known for their Liberty fabrics, but it's also the flagship store for Rowan yarns. For many of us, this is a rare opportunity to take a gander at Rowan's entire line! My sweater's worth of Erila Knight's British Blue 100 from Wool in Bath, UK. Also, the project bag gifted to Anne by Wool's owner, Laura, as a thank you for contributing hats for The Big Knit 2019. Wool is a cozy, welcoming yarn shop just a short walk from the Bath Spa train station in Bath, England. They have an extensive collection of British yarns, a welcoming staff, and a gentle shop dog names Toby. Be sure to stop by on your way to or from the Roman Baths to give Toby a pat and take the time to peruse their extensive pattern offerings! Upcoming Events April 27, 2019 is Local Yarn Store Day. Be sure to check the listings to see if your LYS is participating. Whether they are officially involved of now, consider swinging by to show some support for your local brick-and-mortar stores that day! For those in New England, April 27 is also the day of the Connecticut Sheep, Wool, and Fiber Festival. Anne will be there with her family. Will you? Say hi if you see her there! Episode 43: 7/31/18 – Knitting and Running in 30 min or less WIPS Dahlia - pattern by Brenda York for Berroco Yarns.  Finished garter stitch and am about 1/3 way through the stockinette colorwork section.  Blue body is Juniper Moon Farms Neve in Lagoon colorway from my LYS that closed.  Red is Cascade Ultra Pima Fine in the Cranberry colorway held double, yellow is Berroco Modern Cotton in the Del colorway.  Green is also Modern Cotton in the Breakers colorway.  50-st sock in Plymouth yarns Diversity in the Fruity colorway, which is white with stripes of green, yellow, orange, pink and purple.   Spinning Finished my Tour de Fleece spin!  1lb of cotton became roughly 950 yards of 3-ply sport weight yarn.  I am soooooo glad I participated in TdF for the first time.  Spinning that much over about 3 weeks really helped me become more consistent in my spinning and by the end I was generating some good yarn! Out And About Was out in western MA last weekend for a friend’s wedding and was lucky enough to meet up with Shelley, aka Knitting Travels (hello Shelley!  It was lovely to meet you! Northampton Wools - Great shop; Good selection of wool-less yarns! Old favorites like Penzance, Diversity Sock.  New to me yarns too! Came home with 2 skeins of 365 Yak from Lana Grossa Upcoming: Aug 11th – Fiber Revival at the Spencer Little Farm in Newbury, MA, coast north of Boston Oct 20th – Rhinebeck.  Current plan is to take the Webs bus on Saturday Nov 3rd & 4th – Fiber Festival of New England at the Big E – not 100% sure I’m going, but thinking about it. Knitting Talk Bringing this older segment back.  “cheating” at knitting – I’ve heard a couple people recently talk about how they feel using stitch markers for repeats or using a lifeline is cheating and that’s something I wanted to address here. There are NO knitting police. On the Run Actually went for a run today!   Running Talk This is a re-visit of a topic we discussed a year ago or so and that is shoes. Short version: get a gait analysis from a professional.

At first we thought the yarn was a laceweight until we unwound the skein a bit and understood the unique concept.  Debi takes strands of different yarns and winds them together.  It's like knitting with two strands held together, except she does the work for you and winds them up together in any combination you like!  And you can pick from many colors and bases to get the perfect customized yarn for your project.  She has price information and more on her website, which we linked above.  You can also join her Ravelry group HERE.Gossip & Innuendo:Fiber EventsConnecticut Sheep and Wool Apr 30, Tolland Agricultural Center, Vernon/Rockville, CTGore Place Sheep Shearing Festival Apr 30, Gore Place, Waltham MAMaryland Sheep and Wool May 7-8, Howard County Fairgrounds, West Friendship, MDNew Hampshire Sheep and Wool May 14-15, Deerfield Fairgrounds, Deerfield, NHRhode Island Wool and Fiber Festival May 16, Coggeshall Farm Museum, Bristol, RIWebs Annual Tent Sale May 14-15, Webs, Northampton, MAMassachusetts Sheep and Woolcraft Fair May 28-29, Cummington Fairgrounds, Cummington, MAMaine Fiber Frolic Jun 6-7, Windsor Fairgrounds, Windsor, MEFiber Revival TBAFinger Lakes Fiber Festival Sep 17-18, Hemlock Fairgrounds, Hemlock MESouthern Adirondack Fiber Festival Sep 24-25, Washington County Fairgrounds, Greenwich, NYVermont Sheep and Wool Festival Oct 1-2, Tunbridge Fairgrounds, Tunbridge, VTNew York Sheep and Wool Oct 15-16, Dutchess County Fairgrounds, Rhinebeck, NYFiber Festival of New England Nov 5-6, Eastern States Exhibition, Springfield, MA

Are you a fiber lover? Have you considered the animals from which you acquire your materials? In this episode, recorded at the Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival in Canby, Oregon, we speak to farmers of three different animals raised for their fiber. Jack Lyda of Honey Lane Farms tells us about his love of raising Shetland sheep. Dave Archer of Inti's Gift Alpacas speaks of farming a herd of alpacas, and Angora lovers Heather and Shannon take us into the world of competitive rabbits. We also hear from podcast listeners Lindsey and Shaina about their good/bad experiences spinning and knitting exotic animal fibers. Put yourself on a "high fiber diet", and enjoy!

During the last weekend in September, the Oregon Flock & Fiber Festival took place here in Canby, Oregon! OFFF is one of Alison's favorite fiber festivals and this year, she was able to get Kelley, who has never attended OFFF before, to join along! Hear all about the different fibers, yarns, animals, and other treats Alison and Kelley discovered at OFFF. Next, Kelley talks about about reworking a pair of socks currently on her needles and shares her own stitch pattern that she created for the socks (see pattern below). Lastly, if you have too much fiber or undyed yarn that you have spun up, Kelley reviews two books on natural dyeing and how you can use what you find in your backyard or kitchen to create unique yarns.
