This week we are easing ourselves into the new year with a good goss to start…We are catching up and chatting about skiing, impractical ski wear, sportswear brands, practical dressing v. fashion and a great first gift from a boyfriend…Then we get into the serious stuff (well, you know us, it's serious with a many a laugh!) and we talk about January trading, classic fitness DVDs, water bottles, quick win trading brainstorm, stock buys to take when the only products left are the products that didn't sell…do you take a punt?! Baubles or Reindeers in January anyone?! If so, an execution plan is essential to communication to stores and customers! Here's our top 3 points from today's episode:How do you plug the gap of missed Xmas sales? YOU CANT! Unless you win the lottery. Haha. Typical ideas to 'inflate your sales' (haha) in January could be electric blankets, water bottles, smoothie makers, fitness focused goods, but unless this is planned we would recommend you stay away from buying more stock at this point in the year or you will just be left with or net your sales without making any extra money. Remember, quick wins don't have to be about buying more stock could be concept driven. Your end of year stock number is more important, cash is king. We'd suggest you think of stock moving exercises, such as ideas of collaborating with other departments or product categories to push that excess stock, or how could you generate some extra sales with a spin on a marketing campaign? Look after your staff, this is definitely the main month of illness and wellness. Many people can find the month post festive fun tough, the dark and the cold days with Summer still feeling so far away and customers only really shopping rock bottom price products. How can you improve the mood of your team? Give them a great start to the year, with motivation and a positive drive - remember you are your team! Give back to them and you will see the results.  It's all about getting products booked pre CNY, very quickly after Christmas factories will be shutting down in China, so it timing is crucial to make sure your products land when you need them to this year. Lets also all take a moment to think of those seasonal teams that don't get a break over Christmas, planning is crucial and ensuring that sign off goes smoothly as we have not got the luxury of time with CNY looming! On a positive note, January is a great time to look at your road map and get on with re -forecasting those numbers. We have great expertise in this and many packages on our website to help you get kick started with the new year ahead. Robin Kramer is a brand marketing maven, natural business nurturer, master of relationships, and a sales expert who has an impressive history with leaders in the retail industry who have built their brands on innovative merchandising and strong service cultures. Among these brands is Williams-Sonoma, Inc., where she utilized her operations management background to develop and refine the process of opening new stores during a period of rapid expansion across that organization's three retail brands: Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, and Hold Everything. Kramer overhauled the store's associate recognition program; she also led the customer service functions for all retail brands, including the development and implementation of service standards in stores and call centers. She went on to implement similar programs and new initiatives at another forward-thinking retail brand, the Old Navy division of Gap, Inc.For the past 20+ years, Robin has worked with primarily small, upscale wholesale jewelry brands and designers to bring their products to market, position these niche brands for maximum exposure to their target customers, and build relationships with national and international retailers. One such brand was Dogeared, where she helped them grow from a small company into a well-known jewelry brand with sales growth of over 800% in the five years she was there. She has a keen eye for recognizing products and designs that represent a unique and fresh approach in a crowded and competitive space. In 2010, Robin founded Red Boot Consulting, and in 2012, she co-founded Flourish & Thrive Academy, an online business educational platform for jewelry designers worldwide. She has had the pleasure of speaking and moderating panel discussions at various conferences for Flourish & Thrive Academy's F&T LIVE event, NY NOW Retail Renaissance trade show, American Handcrafted trade show, JCK trade show, ISGB (International Society of Glass Beads) conference, SNAG (Society of North American Goldsmiths) conference, and as a featured guest on the Beads, Baubles & Jewels PBS TV Show. She has a passion for helping creatives go after their dreams. And for red boots! She divides her time between Sausalito, CA, and Dallas, TX. Here, Michelle and Robin chat about Robin's amazing career and how it evolved over the years. They discuss how Robin started Red Boot Consulting, how she works with clients, and what her mastermind program is like. The conversation also includes merchandising tips, why businesses need to know their numbers, and the importance of phone calls and great customer service.MC Design Academy is designed to be a space where I get to share my expertise with you, where you'll get to learn all about visual merchandising, design, display, retail, and everything in between. Sheila Bradley is one of the country's most experienced and best-loved music theatre stars, with a career that has spanned 70 years working all over the world. Born in Essex, U.K., Sheila was brought to Australia in the 1950s by J.C. Williamson's to play the lead in Grab Me a Gondola. She had an established career as a lead singer with the George Mitchell Singers and playing Lalume in Kismet opposite Alfred Drake in the West End. Sheila quickly decided on Australia as home, and so begun a litany of leading roles in plays and musical theatre around the country. Sheila was the nation's original Nancy in Oliver, playing opposite Johnny Lockwood as Fagin. Celebrated turns include Princess Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress, Anna Leonowens in The King and I, Sharon Mclonegran in Finian's Rainbow, Vera Charles in Mame, and Mrs Peachum in The Threepenny Opera. Performances in revue at the Phillip Street theatre, alongside colleagues Gordon Chater, Johnny Ladd and June Salter, confirmed her position as a fine comedienne with a dynamic voice. Her indelible presence made it's mark in productions right up to the early 2000s with performances of The Wizard of Oz, Nunsense 2, Crazy For You, Jolson, Hello Dolly!, Follies in Concert, Me and My Girl, My Fair Lady, The Pirates of Penzance, and in pantomime and theatre restaurant. Sheila is one of Australia's much loved and enduring performers. She recently celebrated her 90th birthday and retains the energy, humour and passion that made her a star several decades ago. It was indeed a tremendous privilege to share a couple of hours with the wonderful Sheila Bradley. The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. Synopsis One of the most popular Romantic string quartets had its premiere performance on today's date in 1882 at a Russian Musical Society concert in Saint Petersburg. Alexander Borodin's String Quartet No. 2 was dedicated to his wife, Ekaterina Protopova. They had met in Heidelberg, Germany 20 years earlier, and since Borodin had just returned from another trip to Heidelberg, his new quartet may have been an anniversary present.  Some commentators even suggest the cello represents Borodin and the first violin, Ekaterina. So what about the second violin and viola? Well, maybe they're meant to be the two witnesses at the wedding! Fast forward to 1953, when some of the tunes in Borodin's Quartet were repurposed in a Broadway musical entitled Kismet. This one, for example, was set to the lyrics, “Baubles, bangles, and beads,” which are, after all, more conventional anniversary presents. Our final Christmas movie is one of our most anticipated. This week we are doing Three Wise Men and a Baby. It stars all the Hallmark hotties: Tyler Hynes as Taylor the surly brother who can't keep a job, Andrew Walker as Luke the firefighter who keeps the family together and doesn't know how to answer a text and Paul Campbell as Stephan, the socially awkward brother who feels more comfortable talking to animals than people. These three get a baby dropped at their feet before Christmas and must work together to care for the child. In this episode we make up new words like bananasa and vaby (which means very different baby), contemplate how none of the brothers could be the baby's father because of their very visible chastity rings and marvel at how the humping lawn ornament is the most action we've seen in any Hallmark movie. This episode is hunk heavy and bananasa and we hope you join us for Three Wise Men and a Baby.
