This week on A Podcast About Catholic Things Eric (The Ambassador of Common Sense) and Dan (The Ambassador of Nonsense) discuss the mass craze that is officially a world-wide phenomenon… and mostly seems to be ignored by orthodox Catholics. Why are those who are strong in the faith less likely to pay attention to the mask-wearing edicts? And why do some people embrace it whole-heartedly, adding ceremony and reverence to the act of putting on the mask? And who is denying science--again? In current events, drug makers plead guilty to charges of causing the opioid epidemic. Elon Musk is now the second richest person in the world. China launches a craft to bring back moon samples. US withdraws from Open Skies Treaty. Trump pardons General Flynn. Mohsen Fakhrizadeh is assassinated. Sarah Fuller kicks a ball. More Covid19 doomsaying and predictions of hospital overloads. In the land of nonsense, a mayor's heart is buried under a fountain. Audie's lady destroys hundreds of whiskey bottles. Scientists make DNA steaks. A woman gets a tapeworm from gas station sushi. During six days in 2020, Sarah Fuller achieved a life-long sporting goal and shattered a glass ceiling she never planned on cracking. In November 2020, the then Vanderbilt women's soccer player received her first call-up to start. After a rough few seasons that had her questioning if she should continue playing, it was a momentous occasion. But the momentum didn't stop. A call came that changed Sarah's life: down players due to COVID-19, Vanderbilt football's coaching staff asked Sarah to kick for the team. On November 28, 2020 Sarah made history as the first woman to play in an NCAA Power Five Conference football game. In this episode, Sarah takes us into that moment and shares about the fears she had, the trolls she encountered and why she ultimately went for it. She takes us inside of the conversation with a sport legend who urged her on and inspired her to shatter a glass ceiling in college football. At the time, the NCAA banned college athletes from profiting off of their name, image and likeness. Here, Sarah discusses the regret that she was unable to commercially benefit from the opportunity—despite others doing so and the story garnering global media attention. Through the story of her incredible athletic journey, Sarah provides listeners with important insights into: · The importance of parents in encouraging children to pursue lofty goals; · The societal hurdles women continue to face en route to unprecedented achievements; · Strategies to maintain confidence amidst external criticism; Sarah also provides applicable advice to women on how to find success and navigate spaces traditionally dominated by men. She highlights an accountability partner model for women to remain encouraged and focused on their goals despite barriers and objections. Finally, recently partnering with TIAA to bring awareness to the gender retirement gap, wherein women on average have 30% less saved than their male counterparts, Sarah has important advice for athletes related to: · Why authenticity is critical to securing meaningful NIL deals; · When to begin preparing for retirement; and · The piece of financial information athletes need more information about. Episode 227 of the Sports Media Podcast features three guests. First up is Ian Darke, a football commentator for ESPN in America and for BT Sport in UK. Last week Fox Sports announced that Darke will be part of the network's coverage of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year. He is followed by Roberto Andrade Franco, a feature writer for ESPN and the author of one of the best pieces of sports writing in 2022. Franco recently wrote “The All-Star dreams of Uvalde's biggest José Altuve fan,” a piece for ESPN on the life of Tess Marie Mata, one of the 19 students killed in the May 24 massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Franco is followed by Julie Kliegman, a writer and copy chief for Sports Illustrated. She recently wrote a piece on Sarah Fuller's journey from kicker for Vanderbilt to mental health advocate and is working on a book about how athletes navigate mental health. In this podcast, Darke discusses how Fox was able to use him for this year's World Cup; when he anticipates learning what games he will call; calling the women's European Championship tournament; the growth of women's soccer in England; the potential of the 2026 World Cup as a game-changer in the United States, and more. Franco discusses why he was compelled to write about Mata for ESPN; traveling to Uvalde three times to report the story and how he approached his reporting; how the Mata family treated his queries; the inevitable tension of prying into people's lives about the worst moment of their life while knowing the importance of such stories to the public; why he opted to make his story about Texas, guns, the U.S., segregation, and the violence that surrounds us; how his background shaped the story, and more. Kliegman discusses why the intersection of mental health and athletics is of interest to her; what happened to Sarah Fuller since she made history at Vanderbilt; the challenge of navigating sudden fame for a college student; the climate of athletes discussing mental health; how this generation of athletes is more willing to be open about mental health and more. Discussion on the Las Vegas Raiders hiring Sandra Douglass Morgan as the first black woman to be hired as the new team president of an NFL franchise. The guys then talk about HBCU players getting the opportunity to participate is a showcase during the NBA Summer League. This gives the players a chance to perform in front of all the top executives in the league.Fr3deR1cK Taylor -College Baseball Player Turned Emmy Award-Winning FilmmakerFr3deR1cK explains what makes a very good sports movie. Fr3d tells us what he likes to see in modern sports movies. One thing that should be done is to have more athletes in the movies. That authenticity is essential. Discussion on sports and how it relates to one's inner self. Discussion on the relationship between socio-economic power and sports; the role of women in a sense of being beacons of social justice and equity. Fr3deR1ck would love to see a movie done on the women's national soccer team. They have consistently been better than the men and are one of the best teams in the world. The story of Sarah Fuller, the young FG kicker at Vanderbilt would be a good smaller budgeted film as well. Fr3deR1ck promotes future projects he is currently working on. The inspiration for his projects flows. Sometimes it comes to him, and sometimes he goes out and looks for it.

Happy Monday everyone. Sorry about not having an episode on Friday, but its the time of year when everyone's schedule goes a little crazy. Today it was just Me and Carlos, and we were of course talking some NFL week 14. His Dolphins took an L but we can both tell you, that was an impressive loss. Losing to the best team in the NFL in that fashion, is nothing to be ashamed of. We also talked all the different playoff scenarios, and the current picture, as it stands now. Then we got into the worst judgement ever by a college football players by far... It hurts to be a Gator's fan this week, that is for sure... I mean, come on.... HIS SHOE!! However, a happy note in College football this week. Sarah Fuller kicked a field goal, and is now the first woman to ever score in a College football game, in a power 5 conference... Well Danny is back from his trip, and man does he let you know it in this episode lol! In this wide-ranging interview, Johanna, Nathan, and Derek talk to Adia Benton about how we can understand the bizarre and disturbing US experience of pandemic from an anthropological perspective and what we can learn from pandemic sport in the United States. Adia Benton is Associate Professor of Anthropology and African Studies at Northwestern University and the author of the 2017 Rachel Carson Award-winning book titled, HIV Exceptionalism: Development through Disease in Sierra Leone (University of Minnesota, 2015). The first part of the conversation grapples with how to read Covid denialism's many manifestations, the relationship of Americans to their health care system, questions of securitization and militarization, biopolitics, and how a vaccine roll-out is likely to look. This is not a conversation about sport, but it is one worth your time. In the second half, we touch on a range of issues inspired by Adia's provocative work and thinking, including the ways we might understand Covid-19 as a form of disease exceptionalism in the world of sport, what to make of Vanderbilt kicker Sarah Fuller, and how we might think about injury and harm through the lens of reparations. With Danny on his way back from "Little Havana" It was Don, and Carlos at it again. The NFL is a main point again this week, and a lot of interesting scenario's are being created in the league. The main one being the NFC East, where 2 teams that are now 4-7 have their share of 1st place... Some big games all around this week, in week 12. One that is now being played on Wednesday at 330pm... Which makes no sense to me, as it is a huge divisional game, but hey, who are we to say anything. Thanks ROGER! We also discussed how awesome it was to see a female kicker in a power 5 conference, in college football. Shout out to Sarah Fuller. Also, spoke a little on the Tyson fight this past weekend, and how it is opening the door for all sorts of bouts to come.
