De milieuschade daarentegen bedraagt 18,6 miljard euro, zo berekende Deloitte onlangs in een kosten-batenanalyse. Het is een voorbeeld van hoe onze economie draait om het behalen van korte termijn-winsten en weinig oog heeft voor de maatschappelijke langetermijneffecten. Dit rendementsdenken staat niet op zich maar is ondertussen ook diep doorgedrongen in domeinen die nooit om winst maken draaiden. Denk aan private-equitybedrijven die huisartspraktijken of kinderdagverblijven opkopen – publiek belang wordt kromgebogen tot verdienmodel.Ons kompas om beslissingen te nemen is grotendeels gefundeerd op winst en groei: ‘de business case' moet kloppen. Terwijl veel economen rechts zijn, is Hans Stegeman links. „Geld stinkt”, leerde hij van zijn ouders. Hij besloot geld voor iets goeds in te zetten bij de Triodos Bank. Het is tien jaar geleden dat de Parijse klimaatakkoorden zijn getekend. „Het zou miraculeus zijn als we die doelen van 2030 alsnog gaan halen", zegt hij, „maar voorlopig hebben we gefaald. De tijd dringt. Het roer moet om." Volgens Stegeman moet ons huidige economische systeem op de schop. „We moeten ontgroeien”, oftewel krimpen.„Dat is super ongemakkelijk”, legt hij uit, „want ons systeem is gebouwd op groei. In een samenleving die al 200 jaar fossiel verslaafd is, vraagt hij zich af: hoe doorbreken we de wereldbeelden die ons gevangen houden? „We hebben dat met het klimaat verkeerd aangepakt: als je te snel wil, te hard drukt, en steeds met doemscenario's komt, krijg je maar een paar mensen mee, maar je krijgt ook weerstand. De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), de Autoriteit Financiële Markten (AFM) en het Centraal Planbureau (DPB) zijn allemaal met hun eigen blik op onze financiële stabiliteit gekomen. Die kwamen in grote lijnen overeen, al nam het CPB wel een opmerkelijk standpunt in over het aangaan van gezamenlijke Europese schulden volgens Hans Stegeman, hoofdeconoom bij Triodos Bank. ‘Voor het eerst zegt het planbureau eigenlijk vrij onomwonden: Eurobonds zijn een goed idee.’ Het CPB rapporteerde al in 2011 eens over de mogelijkheden die Eurobonds bieden, weet Stegeman. ‘Maar toen zeiden ze: we hebben eerst institutionele hervormingen nodig, want we kunnen niet zomaar gezamenlijke schulden aangaan.’ Nu draait het planbureau het volgens de Triodos-hoofdeconoom juist om. ‘Ze hebben een hele paragraaf over publieke goederen en diensten waar we op Europees niveau in moeten investeren en waarbij het goed zou zijn om gezamenlijk schuld aan te gaan.’See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Politics is increasingly polarised, but if there's one thing politicians of all major parties can agree on, it's growth — that their political rivals failed to deliver growth, that we need more of it, and that getting it will solve all of our problems, from inequality and poverty to crumbling public services and stalling investment. Hans Stegeman, Chief Investment Strategist van Triodos, ziet een nieuw dieptepunt voor Duitsland. 'De gfk-index, het consumentenvertrouwen, staat op -36,5. Dat is voor de derde maand achter elkaar een all time-dieptepunt.' En dat vindt Stegeman niet heel raar. 'In de Duitse economie is vooral angst voor de hoge energieprijzen, en dat is alle reden voor consumenten om heel bezorgd te zijn.' De angst in Frankrijk is ondertussen helemaal niet zo hoog. 'Die consumenten zijn onverwachts iets optimistischer dan vorige maand. Dat komt omdat zij zich minder zorgen hoeven te maken over de energieprijzen door de kerncentrales in het land. Ook is er een prijsregulering voor gas. Terwijl wij in Nederland kampioen zijn in marktwerking, zorgden ze in Frankrijk er direct voor dat de marktprijzen vastgelegd werden. Ze zijn daar toch een stuk centralistischer ingesteld', zo vindt Stegeman.  'Het is ook opmerkelijk dat Macron afgelopen week heel duidelijk liet weten dat het niet beter ging, en dat er meer maatregelen komen. Misschien is dit wel het beste, want een deel van het consumentenvertrouwen komt uit onzekerheid. En als je geen leuke boodschap geeft, maar wel duidelijk bent, dan kan dat helpen om mensen voor te bereiden. Het inflatiepercentage in de Eurozone over 2022 is officieel vastgesteld op 8,9 procent, en dat is een getal dat op vele manieren te framen is aldus Chief Investment Strategist Hans Stegeman van Triodos Bank.Zo zou je het bijvoorbeeld kunnen framen als een nieuw record, denkt hij. 'Want het is ook een nieuw record', aldus Stegeman. 'Het is hoger dan de 8,1 procent van vorige maand. Ook de kerninflatie - de inflatie waar je naar kijkt als je de volatiele componenten eruit haalt - staat op 5,1 procent, en dat is ongekend hoog. Maar het is géén verrassing. Het is niet dat het hoger is dan markten hadden verwacht zoals in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, want je kan vaak wel enigszins uitrekenen wat alles doet.' Volgens Stegeman zit het daarom nog allemaal precies in lijn met wat iedereen verwacht had. Al heeft hij er wel een kanttekening bij. 'ECB-directielid Isabel Schnabel hield een toespraak waarbij ze zei dat de hoge inflatie mogelijk langer aanhoudt. En dat hebben markten minder verwacht, want iedereen ging ervan uit dat de piek nu ongeveer bereikt is. Na veruit de heetste dag van het jaar is het vandaag weer iets koeler. Dat goede nieuws gaat gepaard met nog meer goed nieuws voor een groot deel van Europa. Mario Draghi is bereid om premier van Italië te blijven, onder voorwaarden. En dat is geen verrassing volgens Hans Stegeman, head of research en investment strategies bij Triodos Bank. 'Het zat er al een beetje aan te komen', stelt hij. 'Draghi is natuurlijk ook niet de man om zomaar op te geven met toch een redelijk technocratische en minder politieke opvatting van zijn baan. Net als bij de ECB. En het lijkt er nu op dat hij onder voorwaarden wil blijven, daar zal eerst een stemming aan vooraf moeten gaan. De angst voor een recessie neemt maar toe. 'Spectaculair wat er gebeurt op de markt', zo beschrijft Hans Stegeman, head of research and Investment Strategy bij Triodos. 'De olieprijs is onder de honderd dollar, de euro-dollar koers staat bijna gelijk en het heeft alles te maken met de angst die er is voor een recessie en de vraag wanneer die komt.' De verwachting van Stegeman is dat een recessie 'steeds dichterbij' komt. 'Ook als je naar de rentebeweging kijkt zie je dat als extra indicator. Een paar weken geleden zagen we de tienjaarsrente aan alle kanten oplopen. Nu zien we die ook weer wat naar beneden gaat. Het idee is ook dat centrale banken de rente gigantisch gaan verhogen om de inflatie te bestrijden. Maar het kan wel eens zo zijn dat dat helemaal niet hoeft, want de economie gaat vanzelf wel verslappen, waardoor de spanning er wel uitloopt.' Stegeman ziet daarnaast ook dat er nog spanningen zijn voor het afsluiten van de gasleveranties door Rusland. 'Nord Stream 1 wordt stilgezet en het is de vraag of die weer open gaat. Als dat niet gebeurt heeft met name Duitsland, maar wij ook, een groot probleem.' Toch Stegeman ook tekenen dat een recessie nog tegen te houden is. 'Het goede nieuws is dat China weer begonnen is en dat de economie weer open is na de lockdowns. Je zag dat direct terug in de inkoopmanagersindex, die spoot omhoog. Uit China gaan we dan ook goed nieuws verwachten.' Een beetje positiviteit is echter wel nodig, beaamt Stegeman. 'Als we op het smalle pad weten te navigeren tussen het houden van vertrouwen en de inflatie indammen, en er gebeurt niks verkeerds, dan zou het allemaal nog best goed kunnen gaan.'  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
