In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Jen Welter—the trailblazer who broke barriers as the first female coach in the NFL. Jen opens up about her groundbreaking journey, the hurdles she faced, and her mission to inspire the next generation of women in sports.
When life hits you hard, it's not about avoiding the fall but how you rise. In our ever-busy world, finding personal happiness and establishing boundaries can often feel like an unattainable goal—especially for women who juggle multiple roles and responsibilities. But what if the key to unlocking this wellspring of joy was as simple as engaging in a sport? As unlikely as it sounds, for Dr Jen Welter—the first female coach in the NFL—this rediscovery of self came through the game of pickleball. It was during a soul-searching conversation with a friend that Jen revealed her newfound vitality. Her radiant glow was the result of a life reinvigorated by prioritizing herself in her own life equation. In this episode she candidly shares how the demands of constantly being there for everyone else led her to a point of burnout, a feeling many women can relate to. Give yourself permission to be selfish-ish. Do some ish for YOU so you can be your best for others~Dr. Jen Welter “Pickleball taught me the importance of creating healthy boundaries, such as carving out dedicated times for play, which in turn made me more present, focused, and happier in all aspects of life,” states Jen. These principles are not exclusive to sports; they extend to our daily professional and personal routines. Learning to say 'no' and to schedule time for oneself can lead to an overall increase in effectiveness, fulfillment, and well-being. Women often unconsciously set themselves up for exhaustion by being perpetually available—both in a physical and digital sense. I love the fact that Jen's #pickleball experience highlights a critical point: By scattering our availability, we may inadvertently dull our shine. Jen flips the script by proposing a refreshingly direct approach to life and relationships—being fully present for the task or person at hand, knowing that some things can—and should—wait. The struggle is part of the story. These are the journeys that #rockstar #legends are made of! “It's a weird job, isn't it?” So says veteran ghostwriter Stephanie Krikorian, who started in on her ghostwriting career after a long run as a television news producer. In fact, she sees a through-line from the work she used to do as a producer to the work she's doing now as a writer, especially in her many collaborations with some of our leading health and wellness experts. For her very first book—Urban Skinny: Live the Fabulous Life and Still Zip Up Your Favorite Jeans, written with nutritionist Danielle Schupp—Stephanie reports that she leaned on what she knew about building a series of compelling news segments in order to help tell a much larger story. That book led to others, many of them in the self-improvement and empowerment space, including You Are Why You Eat, with Dr. Ramani Durvasula; and The Comeback: How Today's Moms Reenter the Workplace, with career expert Cheryl Casone. Eventually, Stephanie found herself doing so many deep dives, into this new diet or that new meditation practice, that she was moved to write a book about her own experiences as a self-help-ghostwriter-turned-self-help-user—Zen Bender: A Decade-Long Enthusiastic Quest to Fix Everything. Alongside her work as a collaborator, Stephanie has contributed to a variety of publications, including The Wall Street Journal, O: The Oprah Magazine, Vanity Fair Hive, and the New York Post, writing about wine, pop culture and wellness. Among her many books are The New York Times best-seller The Promise: A Tragic Accident, a Paralyzed Bride, and the Power of Love, Loyalty, and Friendship, with Rachelle Friedman; Straight Walk, with supermodel Patricia Velasquez; and, Play Big: Lessons in Being Limitless from the First Woman to Coach in the NFL, with Dr. Jen Welter. Dr. Jen Welter, Coach Kevin Ward, and Dr. Jeff Karp are the people we need to listen to for advice to build the best team of people possible in all walks of life. Dr. Jeff Karp says, “When you take someone who is outside the discipline, they start asking these basic questions that can actually break down those dogmas. And then you start questioning, you know, how the entire field was evolved. You know, like there's like this kind of framework and you start breaking down that framework and you realize that there's completely new ways of thinking that could be helpful. So I think just as a general kind of principle in life, it's, you know, surrounding yourself with people who have expertise and skills that you don't have.” In this episode you'll learn: - Using diversity as a strength from Dr. Jen Welter - Defining your culture with Coach Kevin Ward. One of my favorite parts of the United State Of Women Summitwas attending the Athletes As Activists panel. It was organized by Dr. Kimberly Clay who created Play Like A Girl. It's a wonderful organization that supports girls in both sports and STEM. Dr. Clay and I quickly bonded over our love for Mississippi since she's from Batesville, and I went to Ole Miss a few miles down the road. The panel was informative, heartwarming, and filled me with determination to keep sports as a part of my daughter's life where I had let them go in my own. Liz Loza of Yahoo Fantasy Sports (and previous Enthusiasm Enthusiast guest on Feminism And Football) was a wonderful moderator. The panel featured some amazing women, and I'm honored they let me share it with you. Widely known as a trailblazer and pioneer in professional football, Welter became the first woman to play running back in a men's professional football league with the Texas Revolution. In early 2015, Welter was hired as the first female coach in men's professional football, helping coach the most successful Revolution season in franchise historyWelter is committed to increasing access and opportunities in football. To empower women through football, Welter designed her signature program, “A Day in the Life,” Camp which debuted with the Washington Redskins women's program in 2015.
