College Drafts are a rare thing in rugby, MLR being the only major league to hold one - and they can be kind of confusing, especially for our listeners on this side of the pond who aren't used to the concept. With that in mind, we brought in someone with direct experience of the MLR draft to help explain the process - and chat a little bit about the first year of his career. That man is last year's #3 overall pick, Seattle Seawolves and US Eagles centre, Tavite Lopeti. We're delighted that Pite took the time out of his busy schedule to talk to us about the draft, his experiences last year with it, and how his rugby career has skyrocketed since then - becoming a full international before he'd even played a game of professional rugby! In addition, there's a shedload of news to talk about, with the conclusion of the PR7s, the upcoming Rugbytown 7s, the US women's Eagles in camp ahead of the Rugby World Cup, plus 3 back room/executive appointments across the MLR, and a whole bunch of players transfers to discuss! All that, plus the return of Johnny "Mother" Rucker who has some heartfelt advice for the players who will not be selected in the upcoming MLR draft - you've gotta hear it to believe it!Don't forget, you can get 10% off ALL purchases from shopMLR.com simply by using our discount code AARUGBY at checkout. They kick back a little cut to the show, just because they know we sent you, so if you're looking to pick up some MLR gear, use the code AARUGBY for 10% off!You can also follow us on our socials - @allamericanrugbypod on Instagram, @aarugbypod on Twitter or by emailing aarugbypod@outlook.comWe also have our facebook group, where we discuss all things American rugby, making it the place to keep up with the show between shows! This was the very first time I interviewed Neil, waaay back in 2011, and I was so new to interviewing that this was only the second one ever. I was anxious to do Neil justice, anxious about being on camera, and a bit overwhelmed by being in the the stand at the Ricoh Arena. All of which is evident in the audio...At the time Neil was still living in Belgium and coaching the national team there, but considering a return to the UK and I was very lucky to get some time with him that day. The sound was cut for the video rather than with audio in mind and the original filming was by Steve Reynolds - thanks as ever mr. Thanks for listening and I hope 2021 is kind to you. Taylor Howden we caught up with Taylz at Rugbytown 7s earlier this summer, but since then he’s recently inked a deal with the Houston SaberCats for the 2020 season. Taylor has had a massive playing career, from Auckland to Denver, Ohio, New Orleans and everywhere in between, he’s truly put a massive effort in growing the game here in the US. He is the one among few that has the ability to coach and play simultaneously, and continues to do so on the grassroots level no matter what city he’s currently residing in … Uncle Johnny and Logan brought the spice as usual, but Taylor was great and we wish him the best in 2020 with Houston! Taylor played his high school rugby in Auckland, "doing the dirty" and transferring from Mount Albert Grammar School (MAGS) to Auckland Grammar. Auckland Grammar has a long history of All Blacks... Auckland Grammar All Black List Ben Atiga Ces Badeley Vic Badeley John Drake Grant Fox Graham Henry (AB coach) Doug Howlett Akira Ioane Rieko Ionae Benson Stanley Jeremy Stanlet Kel Tremain Wilson Whineray (former AB captain and prominent businessman) Taylor would eventually move from Auckland, to Texas, to Denver CO (where he would spend many years with the Denver Barbarians) to Columbus OH. He led the Ohio Aviators in a memorable PRO Rugby season (which ended ... well, how it ended). He was heavily involved with Tiger Rugby and ran their youth academy while living in Columbus, and continues to put it forward each day and grow the game.
