Western Expansion The Hounds have been released, but how will they fare in 2023? The 2022 expansion team went 0-16 but seems to be building a strong fanbase. The 2021 expansion team smashed the league, nabbed the shield, but now are a relic of the past. Given the fact that Chicago inherited two top sides in the west via the "Expansion Draft", they'll be expected to compete for a playoff spot. Bold Prediction: Chicago wins the west in their first year. No one will be hungrier to win now than the players and coaches that got dumped in the GillyGate decision last year. The Hounds are a barkin' and dem dogs is hungry. Argies Do Dallas There's new Argentinian brass in the Jackals front office, and the only thing they give a shit about is winning games in 2023. Just like the (kiwi owned) Rugby (United) New York imported in kiwis late last year for a playoff run, Dallas will likely absorb some Argentinian test players throughout the season. It's a World Cup year, and every player who has RWC dreams is chomping at the bit to be seen by selectors. If a prominent Argentinian player isn't seeing time in a European competition, don't be surprised if he ends up doing Dallas. Bold Prediction: Dallas wins 6 or more games. Stands up in the Western conference, and plays spoiler down the stretch in May. They won't make the playoffs, but they will be night and day from their form last year. Sleepers in Seattle Is it even possible to Sleep on a 2x MLR Champ? Seattle has been consistently good since the league's inception. They've been building something fierce under head coach Allen Clarke. Hometown products like Eric Duechle and Cole Zarcone return to a strong roster of Seawolves that know how to hunt in a pack (or is it a pod?). Starfire Stadium remains a surefire place for a loud home field advantage ... (ps, we love and fully support the heckling of visiting team place kickers). Bold Prediction: Seattle makes the western playoffs and strikes up a new rivalry with the Chicago Hounds. We'll call it ... "The Battle for the Right to Wear Forest Green". Bit of a mouthful, but that's the working title for this soon to form Western conference rivalry. As we alluded to above, it's not necessarily BOLD to predict a perennial contender to make the big dance, so we'll throw in another BOLD prediction ... Alan Clarke = coach of the year 2023. PICKEM!

Today we are very fortunate to be joined by Rugby United New York's very own Troy Lockyear. Now a crucial member in the MLR for New York.We talk to Troy about his journey to date and how he has got where he is today. We question him about his brief partnership with the French legend Mathieu Basteraud and playing some true legends of the game who are now plying their trade over in the States. We also chat briefly about his hobbies away from the game. Troy is not only skilled with a rugby ball but also with a pack of cards and we chat all things to do with his magic.A really enjoyable conversation for both of us, especially Matt who's journey to date is one very similar to Troy's. We hope you enjoy this as much as we did.

Colton Strickler kicks off 2021 with ‘The Breakdown’ by talking about ownership changes at Rugby United New York and the Sharks, and Facebook comments before talking about all of the rugby that you can watch this weekend (0:00-14:26). After ‘The Breakdown’, Colton talks to former Monmouth University tight end Shawn Clark about his boarding schools, his stint with the Indianapolis Colts, and how he made the decision to give rugby a try (14:28-34:42). After the conversation, Colton forgets to assign ‘Required Reading’ and closes the show with ‘The Loop.’
Paddy From Providence - 0:35 Hey boys, Patty from Providence. Hey was scrolling through the old Instagram the other day and right between Hannah Palmer and Jenna Frumes. You know who I'm talking about. So I saw a little post about the Hartford Harpooners. Look, Providence and Harford have a have a long standing rivalry as "New England's Second City", but I'd love to see some some more local rugby. Have you seeing any other random teams popping up here and there? I hope you had a good Thanksgiving and happy holidays. Talk to you soon. Who are the Hartford Harpooners? It appears (as of now), that they're simply a single player signing, a confirmed home stadium, and that's about it. *Update* - Since recording, The Hartford Harpooners have signed their SECOND player, High Performance Management founder (and player journeyman) Matt Hughston. Matt has a distinguished player career, Captaining the USA South Panthers in addition to earning caps from the Ohio Aviators, Nola Gold, Rugby United New York and Old Glory DC. If the signings keep coming, there might be something here in Hahhhhtfaaaahd. Many more players (most hailing from the Fairfield Yankees) have been signed over the past two weeks. Very excited about what the Hartford have coming in the future. They best thing they can do right now is provide as much meaningful game time as possible. Helping young players build a high light reel, and allowing them to gain more exposure against MLR academies will catapult their growth as rugby players. Cheers to the Harpooners, excited for what's to come in 2021! Paddy from Providence (again) - 4:15 Hey boys, Paddy, calling from Providence again. Sorry, I forgot to mention this on my last call last weekend was trying to watch the Ireland - Scotland Autumn Nations league, and then the England - France game and and couldn't find it anywhere. I think it's on something called flow rugby or some nonsense like that, which I don't have access to. So anyway ended up watching the Maori all black by the Moana Pasifika great match, little messy rugby, but overall a lot of passion that game and I love the hackers. So, uh, just wondering if there's any way we could watch some quality International Rugby and not sure if we can, but would love some tips on that. Thanks, and again happy holiday. Hope you have a good New Year. If you want Autumn nations (which quite frankly was insanely underwhelming this year), you gotta sign up for FloRugby and pay a monthly fee. Or you can be a leech and snag a username and password. We suggest the latter. Johnny's tip for Paddy: search YouTube for the game you're looking for 10-14 hours after the game is aired, find a pirated replay and watch it before it's taken down. Moana Pasifika vs. The Maori game was passionate and will be something that NZRU focus more on in the years to come. Who doesn't like dueling tribal war dances? Not to mention the filthy offloads and exciting brand of rugby. On episode 21 of An Inside View Podcast we have Founder and CEO of Major League Rugby side Rugby United New York (RUNY) - James Kennedy. Some points we discuss:
This week's episode of Crisis Communications in Sports begins with a conversation between hosts Jim Rocco and Isaac Benjamin about the initial fallout from the tragic injury to Cowboys QB Dak Prescott (0:42), and how owner Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys organization have responded publicly, particularly in light of last season's contentious contract negotiations. Following that conversation, James Kennedy of Rugby United New York and Major League Rugby joins the show to talk about his efforts to grow the game in the U.S., how the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the season and the importance of developing U.S. born players and building the national team (13:26).
I am joined by Greg McWilliams, who has built an extensive resume in both community and performance rugby environments. In this conversation, Greg shares his thoughts on how exposure to these different environments has helped shape him as a coach today. Greg has coached in the highly-regarded Irish Schools system in Dublin, leading St. Michaels College. In Ireland, Greg has also coached Trinity College, Leinster Age-Grade teams, and the Irish Women's National Team. Greg and his family then moved to the United States to become Director of Rugby at the Ivy League School, Yale University. Since his time in the US, Greg coached the USA U20s before moving on to become the Attack Coach for the Men's National Team. Greg is now the Head Coach of Rugby United New York in Major League Rugby. Harry Bennett describes his journey from the Waratahs' Academy to America, life with Rugby United New York, Basta's first season, and the MLR. (USA Rugby had yet to file for bankruptcy at the time of recording.)
Today I had the chance to sit down with Professional Rugby player for the Rugby United New York club and former USA 7s team member Chris Mattina. Chris and I actually went to University of Delaware together and took a couple of classes as part of our coaching science minor. He attributes a lot of his education, especially that in sports nutrition, to his success on the rugby pitch. Now a few years removed from college, Chris is living out his dream of playing rugby professionally for his hometown's squad and has had the chance to represent the United States on the international rugby scene as well. He offers great insight on sport selection as a youth in the US and how his unusual path to his current career could help those athletes currently participating in some not so mainstream sports. Check it out!
On this week's episode of The Left Wing, Will Slattery and Luke Fitzgerald are joined by Cian Tracey of the Irish Independent and former England fullback Ben Foden ahead of a huge Six Nations weekend. Ireland take on England at Twickenham this weekend with the Triple Crown at stake, and Cian is cautiously optimistic that Ireland can produce a big performance. Andy Farrell is set to name an unchanged team and although the veteran players have been going well, Luke still thinks that starting some of the fresh blood would have been a good option. The lads also look ahead to Wales vs France, a game with big championship implications, and Italy vs Scotland, where the home side are looking to win their first game in the Six Nations since 2015. Ben Foden also joins the lads to talk about his adventure playing with Rugby United New York in Major League Rugby. Foden talks about the growth of rugby in the USA, why he decided to leave the English Premiership and also looks back on the famous Leinster vs Northampton Heineken Cup final in 2011.
