The countdown is on in earnest for Stacey Jones, with a date confirmed for his first fixture in charge of the Kiwis. He'll begin his tenure against the Kangaroos in Christchurch on October 27 to open the Pacific Nations Cup - they'll take on Tonga the following week in Auckland. The top two teams will contest a final in Sydney on November 10. Jones told Mike Hosking that Australia will be smarting after their last meeting. The Solomon Islands' Prime Minister has asked for a review of his nation's security treaty with Australia. Fiji's Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has spoken of what he calls his country's 'troubled economy' in his state of the nation address. And a total of 18 Fijian Drua players have been selected in the 39-member Flying Fijians rugby union squad to prepare for the 2023 Pacific Nations Cup series in July and early August.

It won't be the end of the road for Tonga if they lose their Rugby World Cup qualifying play-off against Hong Kong on Australia's Sunshine Coast, but the road to France 2023 will be a lot harder. However the Ikale Tahi will start favourites to beat the lower ranked Hong Kong side, despite losing all their games at the Pacific Nations Cup.

They could be celebrating a double triumph for Samoa on the streets of Apia come Sunday night, with the Manu and Manusina looking to take out the Pacific Nations Cup and the Oceania Women's Championship respectively. It's been three COVID-riddled years since Fiji, Samoa and Tonga competed for the Pacific Nations Cup. In the interim World Rugby have changed their rules to allow players of Pacific origin to represent their countries of heritage, even if they have previously played for another country, opening the door for big names, including Israel Folau and Charles Piutau.
The CEO of Lakapi Samoa says there are more players ready to pledge their allegiance to the Manu for future games under new eligibility rules, but right now he's just glad to have the national team back on the park again at the Pacific Nations Cup. Meanwhile he's urging Rugby Australia not to back out of Super Rugby Pacific.

He's been involved with the All Blacks since 2012 but here are 10 things you might not know about new All Blacks head coach Ian Foster.1) Foster was part of three Ranfurly Shield tenures and won an NPC title as a player with Waikato in a career spanning 14 years. He played 148 games for the province, a record, finishing his career in 1998. He also played 28 games for the Chiefs."My ambition was to finish with legs intact so I could have quality time with my family. Photosport2) During his playing career for Waikato he also worked for TVNZ in marketing and sales.3) His father was a barber in Putaruru before becoming a Presbyterian minister when Foster was aged five which saw the family move to Dunedin.4) Referee Glen Jackson was his first five-eighth understudy at Waikato.5) His wife is Leigh and they have three adult children - Mark 26, Michaela 20, and Jaime 18. Foster said of his family in an interview with Newstalk ZB's Simon Barnett and Phil Gifford last month that being away from his family has been difficult: "That side of it's tough when you have a young family. It's not only the time away but there's the energy you put into it when you are at home. There's also the things they hear about their old man through their mates or in the public, that takes its toll. He also co-coached an All Blacks trial team in 2005.10) Was named All Blacks assistant in 2011 joining head coach Steve Hansen. During his time with Hansen, the All Blacks won 93 of 108 tests losing just 10 tests."This is a great honour to work with the All Blacks," Foster said at the time. "I'm thankful for the faith that Steve Hansen and the board have shown in me," he said.
