On the show this week, I spoke to the lovely Sara Nisha Adams about her two books, The Reading List and The Twilight Garden. This was such a wholesome, uplifting conversation where we talked about the importance of uplifting stories, hope, grief, community, libraries, gardening and so much more. We talked about our names, and the thought, experience and conscious choices that go into choosing names for ourselves, and those we love. Sometimes, the news and social media is flooded with difficult stories, sad news and alarming statistics. It can get a bit too much. That's why I think we always need stories that are full of hope and warmth, reminding us that although there might be sadness and challenges, there is much love and light in the world, and in our lives too. For this reason, I love the work of Sara Nisha Adams, an author whose books are uplifting, warm and wholesome. Sara Nisha's books are based around community, togetherness, making unlikely friendships, healing from grief and loneliness, and finding and choosing family. I have loved the two books she's written so far, and I'm so glad she's my guest this week.Sara Nisha Adams is a writer and editor. She lives in London and was born in Hertfordshire to Indian and English parents. Her debut novel The Reading List is partly inspired by her grandfather, who lived in Wembley and immediately found a connection with his granddaughter through books. Her latest novel, The Twilight Garden came out in June 2023. It tells the story of warring neighbours, Winston and Bernice, who put aside their differences to nurture and grow a communal garden. What develops is an unlikely friendship, healing from grief and so much more. I loved speaking with Sara Nisha, and hope you loved this conversation too.Connect with me on social media - I'd love to hear from you.www.instagram.com/readwithsamiawww.instagram.com/thediversebookshelfpod Support the show

Mushrooms! Librarians! Serial killer victims brought back to life! New friends and life reinvigorated through reading! We've had some good reads since our last episode. We're both digging into our #BigBookSummer reading challenge books. Emily has started DEVIL IN THE GROVE by Gilbert King. Chris has thrown away the reading schedule for ULYSSES by James Joyce but is reading on. In Biblio Adventures, Chris had a browse at the Book Barn in Niantic, CT where she stumbled across TRAVELS WITHOUT CHARLEY by Bill Goralski. She also attended a fall preview event with Simon and Schuster where five authors talked with their editors about their forthcoming fall releases: Safiya Sinclair, Myriam Gurba, Stephanie Land, Nicole Walters, and Melissa Broder. We both enjoyed our 2nd quarter readalong pick, THE READING LIST and were delighted to talk with author Sara Nisha Adams! Just after our conversation with Sara, we announce our 3rd quarter readalong plans. Buckle up for SCARLET SUMMER!

Aleisha is working at the local library on Harrow Road for the summer when she discovers a crumpled-up piece of paper in the back of To Kill A Mockingbird with a list of books that she's never heard of before – let alone read. In turn, each story on the reading list gives up its magic, transporting Aleisha away from the painful realities she's facing at home. And when Mukesh arrives at the library, desperate to forge a connection with his bookworm of a granddaughter, Aleisha discovers that the reading list will be a lifeline for him too. And so begins a new chapter between two lonely souls, who'll learn that fiction can teach them a whole lot about real life…

Today I'm excited to bring to you a conversation with the lovely Sara Nisha Adams, a debut author who has just released her first book 'The Reading List' a beautiful story about an elderly Gujarati widower who discovers reading in an attempt to feel closer to his late wife who loved books, who meets and becomes friends with a young lady who works at his local library and gives him a list of books to read. Sara grew up to English and Gujarati parents, and having experienced living in Hertfordshire as well as Wembley in all their glory, shares with us what it was like for her growing up with these two different cultural influences, and also candidly shares her journey writing and publishing this beautiful book which is so greatly inspired by her own personal life, whilst in a pandemic. She also gives us an insight into how she overcame her self doubt every single day whilst writing. How often do you get to read a book and then share your thoughts with the writer themselves? Find Sara on @saranishaadamsbooks and be sure to give her your thoughts if you've read her book!
