This is a brief recording in May 2022 of the music from Jane's Carousel in Brooklyn, NY. I was just looking up the history of the Merry-Go-Round, which was built in 1922 for the Idora Park amusement park in Youngstown, Ohio. So, by sheer coincidence this recording was made 100 years after the creation of the carousel. Recorded in Brooklyn, New York by Bill McKenna.
I recently revisited one of my favorite metaphors from the classic film Parenthood, and it hit me hard again: Life is either a roller coaster or a merry-go-round. And far too many orthodontists—talented, capable, ambitious people—end up coasting in circles after hitting a certain level of success. I get it. It's comfortable. It's safe. But is it what you really want?In this episode, I break down the difference between choosing comfort vs. choosing growth—and why, in my own life and career, I've always chosen the ups and downs of the roller coaster. Yes, it comes with risk, fear, and the possibility of failure. But it also brings the kind of excitement, fulfillment, and impact that the merry-go-round could never offer. I'll challenge you to think deeply about which ride you're on—and what it would take to switch tracks.QUOTES"If you're going to end your career one day, make sure you rode the roller coaster." — Dr. Glenn Krieger"Complacency is just the merry-go-round in disguise." — Dr. Glenn KriegerKey TakeawaysIntro & Parenthood Metaphor (00:00)Why the roller coaster matters more than the merry-go-round (02:00)How complacency sneaks into ortho practices (03:00)The reality of failure—and why I welcome it (04:30)You can't build your dream life in circles (05:30)A call to action for choosing growth, risk, and transformation (06:00)Why Vanguard LA 2026 will be unlike any ortho event you've ever attended (06:45)Additional Resourcesf this message stirred something in you—if you've been playing it safe but secretly want more—then it's time to choose the roller coaster. Did Lane Kiffin have a chip on his shoulder against Florida? Kiffin was booed on his way out of Oxford by Ole Miss football fans. Heavenly father, do I stay here and make gobs and gobs of money, or do I go to Baton Rouge and make slightly more gobs and gobs of money? Meanwhile, the Gators recruited Tulane's Jon Sumrall.
Dive into the delusions of detention and deportation under the Trump administration. The Florence Project's legal director offers a new way to understand and challenge them. The legal director of the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Projectprovides an on-the-ground analysis of and reckoning with year 1 of the Trump administration's detention and deportation regime. What happens after an arrest? How many people have been detained? And what happens to asylum seekers? And what exactly is Kafka's merry-go-round of hell?Laura St. John answers these questions and more. But, perhaps most importantly, St. John provides practical answers for what concerned people might do about it. She offers an antidote to the “sense of hopeless inevitability” that the Trump administration is purposefully creating for undocumented people. For 15 years, St. John has been working for the Florence Project—an organization that provides legal assistance and advocacy for undocumented people in detention.

This Friday morning recording covers a variety of topics, stretching from a hypothetical Matthew Jordan comeback at the DPWT Championship to a preview of a Bears-Browns game happening five weeks from now. We begin with a Football Minute following another Jets primetime loss. Andy forces PJ to apologize for forcing America to watch Justin Fields in a standalone game, something that he has done on this podcast many times. Andy and Brendan quickly pivot to the Butterfield Bermuda Championship where Adam Hadwin had the early lead. The two use Hadwin fighting for his card as an example of the new cutthroat PGA Tour rules and a proof of concept for what the fall swing should be. Mid-Am Will Haddrell, previously mentioned on Wednesday's episode, looks to be in position to make the cut and maybe even beat Michael Brennan! In Dubai, the European Ryder Cup team is off to the races in the final event of the DP World Tour season. Nicolai Hojgaard leads at the halfway point over the likes of Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, and Rory McIlroy. Andy compares the leaderboard in Dubai to the Butterfield leaderboard for a good chuckle before asking if a Patrick Reed or Matthew Jordan comeback win would do more for content. The Internet Invitational wrapped up last night with over 200,000 live viewers tuning in for the finale. Andy and Brendan discuss the reach of the tournament and compare the viewer numbers to what the Butterfield may produce this weekend. Kai Trump's LPGA debut produced plenty of viewers on social media as she carded an 83 in the first round at the ANNIKA. Brendan gives some credit to Trump for beating the offshore gambling lines and says it was a "not-horrendous" score given the circumstances. This leads into another wider discussion about what sponsor exemptions should be used for in golf and whether someone like Internet Invitational star Brad Dalke is worthy of one in a PGA Tour event. Andy highlights that other popular sports do not need something like a sponsor exemption to bring in eyeballs. The Champions Tour is playing four rounds this week at Phoenix Country Club and some hecklers have surfaced following Bernhard Langer around the event. Two patrons are unhappy with Langer's potential "anchoring" and have t-shirts and the rulebook to prove their point. This episode ends with a Golf Advice question that could be straight out of a "Curb Your Enthusiasm" script that has Andy yelling about aces again.
BT & Sal react to the breaking news that Brian Daboll has been fired as the New York Giants head coach, effective immediately, with Mike Kafka named the interim. The hosts agree it was the "humane thing to do" after another fourth-quarter collapse and a disastrous season, arguing that his record—not bad luck—is the reason. The fiery discussion quickly pivots to the next logical steps, demanding that defensive coordinator Shane Bowen be fired immediately, calling his continued employment "patently offensive." They also debate General Manager Joe Schoen's future, with Sal stating "He'll be next" but expressing concern over ownership's commitment to a full clean-house approach. The segment covers the immediate optics of the firing and what the Giants need to do for a true, long-term rebuild.

The film uncovers the little-known story of the 1960 civil rights protest at Glen Echo Amusement Park in Maryland—a powerful moment when Howard University students and white Jewish neighbors joined forces to integrate a local amusement park, facing down segregationists and even the American Nazi Party.Trachtman shares how her childhood visits to the park inspired the film, what it means to tell history through intimate personal storytelling, and the unexpected intersections of faith, justice, and memory that emerge when ordinary citizens act on conviction. The conversation explores the emotional layers behind forgotten movements, the role of Jewish allies in early civil rights activism, and how filmmakers like Trachtman use art to preserve moral clarity in divided times.Website: aintnoback.comGuest Bio: Ilana Trachtman is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker with over 30 years of experience producing documentaries for PBS, HBO, Showtime, ABC, and A&E. Her acclaimed works—Praying with Lior, Black and Latin America, and The Pursuit: 50 Years in the Fight for LGBT Rights—explore identity, belonging, and justice through deeply personal stories. Her latest film, Ain't No Back to a Merry-Go-Round, chronicles the interracial protests that desegregated Glen Echo Amusement Park in 1960, blending historical footage with intimate interviews to illuminate how ordinary people shaped the civil rights movement. Getting off the Merry-Go-Round of Guilt Speaker: Michael Shockley Scripture: 1 John 2:1-2 Episode Summary In part 5 of our 1 John series, Pastor Michael uses the dangerous playground equipment of the 1980s - especially the merry-go-round - to illustrate how we get stuck in destructive cycles of sin, guilt, and distance from God. Through 1 John's teaching about Jesus as our Advocate, we discover how to break free from the concealment cycle and enter the life-giving confession cycle. Key Points - We get stuck repeating the same patterns: try not to sin, sin, hide, guilt, distance from God - Sin doesn't just break rules - it breaks hearts, lives, trust, families, and faith - Jesus steps in as our Advocate, offering a different cycle: confession, cleansing, confidence - As our propitiation, Jesus took what we deserved so we could receive what He deserved Main Takeaway Nobody can live perfectly, but because of Jesus, we can live peacefully. When we confess instead of conceal, we end up closer to God rather than farther away. Jesus breaks the merry-go-round of guilt and replaces it with grace. Memorable Quotes - "Jesus breaks the merry-go-round of guilt and replaces it with grace." - "Sin doesn't just break rules. It breaks hearts. It breaks lives. It breaks trust." - "Sin promises freedom, but also leaves you in chains." - "Jesus doesn't talk God into loving us; God sent Jesus to us out of His Love." - "Jesus took what we deserved so we could receive what He deserved." - "A big enough and strong enough person could grab the bars and make it stop almost at once. Do we know anybody big enough and strong enough to stop the destructive cycles in our lives? We sure do!" Reflection Question Which cycle are you living in - the concealment cycle (try, sin, hide, guilt, distance) or the confession cycle (try, sin, confession, cleansing, confidence)? Tune in to hear Pastor Michael's hilarious stories about 1980s playground death traps, accidentally setting the woods on fire, and why fancy hand towels remain a mystery to him. Gabby and Mark are joined by the Premier League's fifth top goal scorer of all-time and winner of eight major trophies with Manchester United, Andy Cole. Was Andy surprised to see Ruben Amorim become the first Man United manager to win at Anfield since 2016? With the focus on set pieces despite a transfer window dominated by big striker moves, are strikers taking too long to settle in? And as a man who was born in Nottingham and ended is career at Forest, what does he make of the managerial merry-go-round as Sean Dyche becomes their third manager of the season! Plus, Gabby and Mark chat about Tommy Fleetwood's son running on the green to congratulate him for winning the DP World India Championship; the retirement of two-time Rugby World Cup winner Emily Scarratt; and rugby's next big thing, Noah Caluori, after he scored five tries on his first Saracens start (against Sale - sorry Mark!); And should Wythenshawe FC Vets, the Sunday league team with 822 Premier League appearances between them, give Mark a shot?
Answering a question about the dark side.

I am back in harness after taking a three-month break. I feel energised and ready for "One more spin on the merry-go-round". (The title of a book written by Sean Duignan after Albert Reynolds became Taoiseach in 1992. Albert said to Sean, "Are you ready for one more spin on the merry-go-round?") What did I spend my summer doing? I read books for the pleasure of reading and the "white space" reading provides. Discovered new songs and singers, new poems, and as a result of the time spent relaxing, visiting bookshops, but also in pubs in Sligo and elsewhere, listening to music and engaging in conversation. Oh yes, I also played some golf! I visited "Liber", an independent bookshop on Sligo's Main Street, staffed by very knowledgeable and helpful book lovers, and came away with an armful of books. I have made a determined effort to read as many as possible. My favourite holiday read was "The Last Ditch", as I very much enjoy Eamonn Sweeney's writing style. You will also find him on the back of the sports supplement in the Sunday Independent. His publisher's brief for the book was to review the 2024 GAA hurling and football season. However, the colour in the book comes from his memories of his family and, most enjoyably, the stories about the pre- and post-match engagements with people on the stands. Also, the craic on trains and buses, travelling to and from the games. MY most enjoyable evening of the summer was in "Shoot the Crows" music pub in Sligo town, when we joined in with the group singing "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd, a song that passed me by when first released, and is now a favourite on my playlist. A great chorus to sing along to loudly. I will share some more of the inspiration I received because of taking time out, and hopefully my musings in the coming months will also benefit you. I am now ready for another spin on the merry-go-round and look forward to connecting with you again through my articles. By Executive Coach Andrew Keogh of Aristo.ie

Is Elon Musk OK?Just a few months ago, the prancing right-winger was constantly in the news. Today, though – poof! – he has vanished from media coverage. But fret not -- Elon always finds money to take care of Number One. Indeed, this month he was handed a $30 billion pay raise by his car company. Yes, BILLION.Odd, since his stewardship of Tesla in the past couple of years has been disastrous. Sales, profit, quality, and market share are in the ditch, along with his own reputation. Yet, in a gushing letter to shareholders, the corporation's board of directors asserted that its $30 billion handout was a “critical” gesture to induce Elon to show up for work. Apparently, $29 billion would not have been enough.Who are these board members who supposedly “govern” the corporation and its CEO? One is Kimbal Musk. Yes, Elon's brother! Others are close pals and lackeys, each of whom is extravagantly paid. For example, the board member who “negotiated” that ridiculous giveaway to His Supremeness has pocketed more than half a billion dollars in profits from Tesla stock options she has been granted.Well, declare apologists for Musk and his captive board, if $30 billion was excessive, the shareholders who technically own Tesla could've sued to stop payment. Uh… no, they couldn't. Last year, Musk moved Tesla's official residence to Texas, where the corrupt governor dutifully passed a law dictating that only shareholders owning at least three percent of the stock can sue on matters of corporate governance. Basically, that eliminates all shareholders except: Musk. And that's how the corporate merry-go-round is rigged to keep spinning around and around and around.Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication. Subscriber-only episodeAnxiety has a way of sneaking up on us, transforming from a manageable merry-go-round into something far more disorienting and suffocating. With market volatility, endless news cycles, and algorithm-driven content feeding our fears, it's no wonder many entrepreneurs find themselves trapped in an anxiety spiral that paralyzes progress.Through this deeply personal episode, I unpack the progression of anxiety and how it manifests in our business lives. Drawing from conversations with clients and my own experiences, I reveal how anxiety evolves from something we can step away from into a force that pins us against the wall. But more importantly, I offer a practical five-step framework to break free: recognizing anxiety for what it is, calming your nervous system (with reference to Dr. Lahana's strategies from our previous episode), reconnecting with your purpose, taking small but meaningful actions, and finding the right support system. What makes this approach different is the focus on your audience – remembering that they need your solutions, and if anxiety keeps you stuck, they miss out on what only you can provide. Your gifts aren't just for you; they're meant to serve others. Whether you're experiencing hormonal shifts amplifying these feelings or simply navigating uncertain times, these steps provide a path forward without minimizing the very real experience of anxiety.Ready to move past this paralyzing spiral?
