“I think during my formative years, shying away from my true self – my authentic self – that's definitely shaped how I approach being in front of choirs, using choir as a platform to really encourage kids to be themselves. I think there's a vulnerability to singing where it really is an avenue to accessing the truest parts of ourselves, and so that's kind of my life mission now that I get to be in front of choirs.”Chris Maunu is a conductor, educator, and composer dedicated to inspiring young singers and shaping the future of choral music. Based in Portland, Oregon, he serves as Artistic Director of the acclaimed Pacific Youth Choir, Affiliate Faculty at Portland State University, and Artistic Director of the professional ensemble Choro in Schola. Previously, he spent 17 years as the Director of Choral Activities at Arvada West High School in Colorado and 7 years as Co-Artistic Director of the professional Anima Chamber Ensemble. A four-time GRAMMY® Music Educator of the Year Finalist and two-time CMA® Foundation National Music Teacher of Excellence honoree, Chris is a passionate advocate for music education. Choirs under his direction have received national and international acclaim, performing at over a dozen major conferences, including National and Regional ACDA events. His ensembles have earned prestigious honors such as the American Prize in Choral Performance and the Gold Diploma at the Rimini International Choral Competition. In high demand as a guest conductor and clinician, Chris recently conducted the 2025 National 11-12 HS Honor Choir at the National ACDA Conference in Dallas, TX to great acclaim. As a composer, his award-winning works have been performed worldwide. He also serves as editor of the Pacific Youth Choir Choral Series with Pavane Publishing. An active member of NAfME and ACDA, Chris is the NWACDA Chair for Community Youth Choirs and frequently presents at both the regional and national levels. His writings appear in the Choral Journal, and he is a contributing author to A Choral Conductor's Companion.Chris holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a Bachelor of Music Education from Northern State University. In this episode of the HSE Talking Health and Wellbeing Podcast, Dr. Niamh Clarke, Principal Psychologist Manager and Programme Presenter, and Dr. Aleisha Clarke, National Programme Manager for Mental Health and Wellbeing, joins host Noreen Turley to introduce the new Balancing Stress programme, which is a free, easy-to-access, evidence-based online course in stress management, developed in partnership with HSE Health and Wellbeing and HSE psychologists. Through the conversation, Niamh and Aleisha explore how stress affects so many of us, how it can build up unnoticed, and why understanding our own patterns of stress is the first step to managing it more effectively. The episode highlights key themes covered across the six sessions, including practical tools for managing worry, anxiety, low mood, improving relationships, and managing stress into the future. It also explains how the programme combines techniques from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Positive Psychology, and Compassion-Focused Therapy to offer real, practical support. This feels a little bit repetitive as you have already noted the tools and techniques Niamh and Aleisha discuss how Balancing Stress is designed for busy lives, with six short, flexible sessions that you can complete at your own pace. Whether you are facing everyday pressures or simply want to strengthen your coping skills, this programme offers practical strategies you can start using right away. The conversation also highlights the importance of making psychological supports more accessible, the impact of stress on our wellbeing, and the power of small, consistent changes in building resilience over time. Listen now to find out how Balancing Stress can help you take small, manageable steps towards a healthier, more balanced life. #75 Social Prescribing Benefits: GP's perspective

HSE Talking Health and Wellbeing

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 30, 2024 25:34

In this episode of the HSE Talking Health & Wellbeing Podcast, host Noreen Turley explores the concept of social prescribing with Dr. Sean Owens, a GP and chair of the Climate Health Alliance of Ireland, and Dr. Aleisha Clarke, the HSE National Program Manager for Mental Health and Wellbeing. They explain how social prescribing aims to connect individuals with local community resources to meet their social, emotional, and practical needs and discuss that sometimes it's not just about medical solutions; it's about holistic care that considers the whole person moving beyond traditional medical solutions to a more holistic approach to healthcare. Sean acknowledges that integrating social prescribing into primary care requires a cultural shift among healthcare providers. He demonstrates how social prescribing has been successfully integrated into his practice, where link workers have become an essential part of the healthcare team. Aleisha explains that the evidence shows that social prescribing can have a range of positive outcomes, including improvements in mental wellbeing, physical health and health behaviours, and reductions in social isolation and loneliness. Aleisha outlines the referral process, noting that individuals over 18 can be referred by a GP, health care professional or individuals can also self-refer. Once referred, they work with a link worker to co-develop a personalised health and wellbeing plan tailored to their specific needs and circumstances. This individualised support is crucial, as link workers take the time to understand each person's unique needs. Listeners are encouraged to visit the All-Ireland Social Prescribing website https://www.allirelandsocialprescribing.ie/ to connect with local link workers and start their journey toward accessing community supports. This episode highlights the potential of the social prescribing service in improving health and wellbeing, and advocate for continued development of this innovative service in healthcare. Hey, sis! I know it's been a minute and I told you I wasn't too sure what I'd be doing on here for 2024. Well, chile what started off as a radio interview on intimacy took a turn into a short podcast on intimacy, just in time for Valentine's Day.  Let me rewind to how we even got to the radio interview. Now, many of you know I have not been delivered from reality television. I try but it's a weakness! But this past season on OWN's Love & Marriage Huntsville, the issue of sex, intimacy and even “faking it” was a recurring theme. We know Kimmie's cancer treatment killed her libido and she admitted to faking it, simply to take one for the team. Her husband Maurice kept saying “it was a mind thing” and felt some type of way. I had to side-eye the brother because she survived cancer! Dude. Be glad she was even willing to even try and have sexual relations with you!  Then we have Melody and Martell.  If you watch the show, you know his infidelity and fathering a child outside their marriage led to their demise. Honey, Melody let it be known she never had an orgasm during their marriage, thus faking it, too.  But we're not done. Carlos King - being a tad messy- asked Tisha if she ever faked it during the reunion and she admitted she has as well. However, none of this is unusual about women and “The Big O”. Here are a few statistics from Pleasurebetter.com: 81.6% of women don't orgasm from intercourse alone.  Only 18.4% of women report that intercourse alone is sufficient to orgasm.  Only 65% of women orgasm during partnered sexual activity. 5-10% of women have never orgasmed, though many of these women will later in life. 59% of women have faked an orgasm.  So none of the women on #LAMH are alone. But should you fake it? Is your pleasure up to you or your partner?  Is sex only about reaching the mountaintop? How important is intimacy beyond the bedroom? Could other issues such as a lack of communication lead to lackluster lovemaking? These are some questions I had to call in a professional to address. We're talking to a regular of the podcast, Aleisha Olatunde. She is both a Christian therapist (Whole You Therapy) and sex coach (Whole Intimacy, LLC). So lean in as we chop it up about the barriers to true intimacy, changes in both men and women that can impact their libido, how do you resolve sexual challenges and more.

Don't Switch My Life Support Off With Aleisha Pienaar

This is a powerful episode, its very raw and rather emotional but I have Aleisha Pienaar to guest who shares her story of her Dad who had a heart attack last year at the tender age of 53 and  who was, after being revived,  left fighting for his life in ICU. Aleisha had read my book "Relentless" and  had attended one of my speeches where I talked about my Mum and Dad's stories, It  was in her time of need that these stories became the catalyst  for her to fight hard for her Dad. The ICU team were convinced her Dad would not wake up from the coma and that if he did, after having been without oxygen for 46 minutes, that his life would be not worth living and that the  brain damage would be massive or he would be in a vegetative state. They were told they must take him off life support. Aleisha reached out and I encouraged her to fight, to be vigilant and not to give up when all others had.  A couple of days after they were told to take him off life support her father incredibly, woke up and although his rehab  was hard and rather long her Dad is now back full into life, working, exercising and enjoying his family again. I share too, my personal story of fighting for my Dad in ICU and how I was blocked at every turn from getting what I needed for him. Please note these are our very personal, real stories and your experiences may be very different but we want to share openly, the good, the bad and the very ugly of what we experienced and a message of empowerment and a message of not to give up too early. If I had my mum would also not be with us now. We hope by sharing this, we will help other families faced with  similar situations, we also hope that it might initiate change in our system. I have a dream and that is to get a law change in NZ - to get  "The Right to Try" law which is implemented in some states in the USA which basically says that if the doctors have no more answers and someone is dying that you can sign a waiver and try anything reasonable to save that person's life. I wanted that for my Dad, I was wanting intravenous vitamin C and thiamine as per the protocol of this study  But I was blocked due to legal issues and I had to fight for 15 days against the ethics committee - all mind you, while my father was dying and they had nothing more to offer and while they were actively trying to get me to sign off on taking him off life support. I eventually won the right by finding a loophole that allowed Dad's GP to come in and administer it but by then he was in multiple organ failure and could die at any minute and despite that the very first infusion (which was only half of what I wanted) dropped his CRP in half, improved his kidney function and enabled them to take him of Noradrenaline but then we were blocked for 18 hours from getting him the next infusion and again the next infusion and by then - it was way too little and way too late and I was forced to take him off life support and they morphined him in front of my own eyes until he died. Now I am left not knowing if we had been allowed to do it from the very beginning whether his life could have been saved and quite openly I have been left severely traumatized from this experience.  Some of the things I witnessed in there were horrifying, I don't and can't share all of what we went through but suffice to say I believe things could have been different had we been given a chance. BIO Aleisha and her husband, Emil, are based in Dunedin Otepoti, New Zealand. Aleisha is a full-time parent to two little girls, and Emil manages a rest home. They have a heart for people whose voices are not heard, and have invested time in humanitarian work in the Amazon Jungle, as well as local outreaches to those who struggle in their home city. With a strong mission-mindset, Aleisha and Emil are working towards creating more impact in their community. They have faced several medical challenges, including misdiagnosis of a now-irreversible medical condition, two miscarriages, as well as the very near loss of Aleisha's father to a heart attack. As a whanau, their desire is to raise awareness of complications in the medical field that can be addressed if caught early enough, and believe that if enough people are vulnerable and willing enough to share their story, we can see a change in the health care system that will bring a lot more happy endings. And now a summary of how your book and story helped us save my dad. Lisa spoke at a conference that Emil and I attended two years ago, sharing the story of how she rehabilitated her mother through determination, self-education, and persistence. In 2022, I found myself facing a similar situation, when my father suffered a catastrophic heart attack. In all the confusion and uncertainty, Lisa's story came to mind, and I knew I needed to get my hands on her book, "Relentless." I devoured the pages, reread my notes from the conference, and what I immediately saw was the importance of standing firm, comparmentalizing emotions, and taking the necessary steps to fight for my dad's right to live. After a few days, we were asked to consider turning off my father's life support. I wasn't willing to settle for that result, and insisted that he remain on life support until we were able to successfully wake him and assess his brain function. The very next day, my father woke safely from his coma, and responded to instructions the doctors gave him. After a month in ICU, dealing with multiple crises and complications, my father was healthy enough to come home. His brain function is perfect. A few months of physical therapy rebuilt his muscle mass. He is completely himself, and alive, thanks to Lisa sharing her story two years ago. Hey sis! As we dive into today's topic, I must share the inspiration. A few weeks ago, I finally caught the Hillsong documentary. Whew, girl. It was a lot. From the structure of power, to coverups of sexual misconduct and abuse, to volunteers being overworked and more. When I say there was so much going on behind the scenes, it was. (I won't even get into Brian Houston, the founder and his daddy, sis. Not today.) But a big focal point of the piece was former pastor, Carl Lantz. With his dynamic speaking, charismatic personality, an appearance that is more relatable to “the culture” than what you may see in a traditional church, I can see why many were drawn to him. Lantz was dubbed a “celebrity pastor”, who baptized Justin Bieber and Kevin Durant. Other celebs, from actors, to musicians, to athletes and reality stars often frequented his church.  However, beyond his youth and superstar appeal, there was even more to Lantz.  Including the well-documented affair that led to his ousting.  There was also an “inappropriate” relationship with his nanny, where his wife caught them in a compromising situation. Although she has decided to stay by her husband's side, I am quite sure sis has some days where she low-key cursed him out in her head. Albeit he appears repentant and they are working through reconciliation, I know it has got to be tough. As I watched the story unfold, it made me think about how do we protect our relationships from infidelity? Is it possible to cheat-proof your marriage? If a breach of trust is broken, how do you rebuild that trust? Should you even attempt to reconcile? When intimacy is lacking, what are ways to restore it? How does conflict affect sexual connection? As I viewed the documentary, I noted something else: women being held responsible for the sexual satisfaction of their husbands. Now, the Bible says the woman's body belongs to the husband and vice versa; so why was the onus put on the women? I hope the men got together and spoke about why foreplay starts before you enter the bedroom. If not, consider this a suggestion to pass along. Did they ever chop it up about how intimacy is beyond hot, sweaty sex?  Did they emphasize the importance of safe-guarding themselves from falling prey to sexual temptation outside their marriage? Bottom, line? On the outside looking in, it seemed like the power dynamics of the patriarchy wanted women to carry the bedroom burdens! I had moments when I was like, “Now, Jesus, what's goin' on up in this place?” I had questions. A lot of them.  So I reached out to Aleisha Olatunde, who is a Mental Health Counselor who also works in sex therapy and coaching. Previously, she and I discussed the saints and sex, including the focus on purity culture that is so prevalent in many of our faith spaces. But what about when the issue is keeping the marriage bed pure and undefiled (Hebrews 13:4)? Aleisha and I discuss ways for couples to increase the chance of having a faithful union. She is also candid on the contributing factors as to why a partner may step out - whether it's the husband or wife. What about recovering from an affair; is it possible? Well, sis we get into that and more. So whether you're married, divorced, engaged, dating or single, this is a conversation that is necessary when it comes to being #MarriedAF. Married and faithful.

We are excited to give you a glimpse of real Super Couples taking part in my new book "PressPlay" (available for purchase March 2023).This week's couple Aleisha & Hayden took on Chapter 7 called "Vision Boards Brought to Life"Find out how they went! Intro:I have the pleasure this afternoon of speaking with a couple that I have tracked into the stunning hills of New Zealand in order to get their experience of playing Chapter 7 of my book “Vision Boarding Your Common Dreams”.This particular GAME takes some forethought and preparation. It becomes well worth the effort for the focus, clarity and intention it brings to you life and relationship.  Putting your dreams out into the world is a secret ingredient that allows “others” to become cooperative components in its realisation.  How can people help you, if your dreams remain tucked into the recesses of your imagination?? Popular American Life Coach Martha Beck furthers this by stating: “The (vision)board itself doesn't impact reality; what changes your life is the process of creating the images—combinations of objects and events that will stick in your subconscious mind and steer your choices toward making the vision real.”She continues on to state, that the key is “Regularly picturing delights that don't yet exist, emotionally detaching from them, and jumping into action when it's time to help the miracles occur.”So, who better to bring this Game to life than Aleisha Cootes, a woman that inspired me more than a decade ago to fall more in love with the focus of couples and relationships. After much world travel, her and husband Hayden, married 15yrs, moved back to their homeland of New Zealand and brought their dream to life by building their family home - to which they added 3 beautiful children who surely make it come alive!I can't wait to hear how Couple Vision Boarding went for you both after all these years of creating goodness into your life…Kiora you two…  Visit my website on www.inthegamecoaching.com for more information regarding the Relationship Series and the upcoming book launch of "PressPlay" in January 2023!

Tonight's guest is Aleisha from the State of Texas, and in the early hours of Saturday October 17th of 2021 she was woken up at 3am to the sounds of her dogs barking, and saw a strange orange light coming through the bedroom shutters.
