In this episode Mat chats with Sarah Connolly about the ingrained fear but unlimited joy of living a life without alcohol. Sarah is a certified Grey Area Drinking and Mindset Coach who helps her clients find the freedom to live an uncompromised (alcohol-free) life. Sarah has been super successful in business, raised 2 young boys, and navigated life in Australia. But she knew her drinking habit was getting out of hand, and it started getting in the way of her living in a way she was proud of. This is a conversation about flourishing without alcohol, about choice, about ingrained societal cultures, and how to take control of how you live your life. This is not a conversation that demonises alcohol. It's the chance to reframe the relationship many people have with alcohol and how life can be even more amazing by shifting the priorities of the grapes and the grain. On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way, and how their experiences can impact us all. She's all about providing support to people not ‘bad enough' for rehab or not cut out for AA but are ready to make some changes. It's a raw, honest, and compelling conversation. Chuck in your earbuds and get ready to at least question the role alcohol plays in your life. If you like this episode, please share it.

Whether we like it or not, if we've been drinking quite a lot for a long period of time, it's likely that drinking has become a part of who we are. But if we're not a drinker anymore, then who are we? That uncertainty regarding our identity without booze is a question many people who choose to go alcohol-free ask themselves. In this week's podcast, the discussion is chaired by Claire Davy, a PhD student at Canterbury Christ Church University. Claire's guests are researcher and lecturer Dr Emily Nicholls, Head of Student Engagement David Gilani, drinking coach Sarah Connolly, Mikey Moss from Recovery Festival Bristol, and Hakeem Allen, founder of the Anti Racist Social Club. This conversation was recorded in October 2021 as part of Club Soda's Global Mindful Drinking Festival. The mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly has sung at the most prestigious venues around the world, including the Royal Opera House, London and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, as well as Glyndebourne, Vienna and Bayreuth. In 2009 she was a soloist at the Last Night of the BBC Proms, singing Rule Britannia dressed as Admiral Nelson, and she has also made a name for herself taking on male or so-called “trouser roles” in opera, including Handel's Giulio Cesare (Julius Caesar). As a child, she was an outstanding pianist with a passion for classical music and jazz. After studying piano and voice at the Royal College of Music, she decided to become a singer. She was a member of the BBC Singers for five years, before taking the leap and seeking work as a soloist. She took a break from public performance in 2019 to have treatment for breast cancer, but has now resumed her career. She was made a DBE in the 2017 Birthday Honours and last year she became an Honorary Member of the Royal Philharmonic Society, recognising her outstanding services to music. Rain outside my window, 23:18, 11th August 2018 by A podcast and art project by Sarah Connolly
The mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly is an opera star, singing the big roles at La Scala, The Met, Glyndebourne and the Royal Opera House. Her latest project is much more modest yet very ambitious; 'Come to Me in My Dreams' is a CD of songs and poems, mostly English - Shakespeare, Blake, Housman - set by composers all of whom studied or taught at the Royal School of Music. She talks to Morgan Quaintance about the attraction of simply singing, how she found the material - which includes two settings by Benjamin Britten never before recorded - and what connects these works that span a dozen centuries. Dame Sarah and accompanist Joseph Middleton perform a song from the album for Front Row ahead of a Prom performance on Monday. As part of Front Row's Inspire season we set three artists, the poet Alison Brackenbury, crime writer Vaseem Khan and rapper and playwright Testament, a challenge: to seek out inspiration, act on it and over the next six weeks create an original piece each, which they will perform live in the programme on 7th September. The three artists talk about their hopes and ideas.'The Producers', Mel Brooks' classic comedy musical film and Broadway show, whose hit song and dance number 'Springtime for Hitler' features Nazis doing the can-can is 50 years old. Critics Angie Errigo and Matt Wolf consider its virtues, foibles and if, given the political state of the world now, such a film could be made today.Presenter: Morgan Quaintance Producer: Julian May.
In this episode of the Glyndebourne podcast, we explore the tangled web of politics and love in Handel’s Giulio Cesare with contributions from top mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly, William Fitzgerald, Professor of Latin Language & Literature at King’s College London and Suzanne Aspden, Associate Professor of Music at the University of Oxford. Tom Service considers the semitone. Music's most fundamental building block, it can mean sorrow when it falls, triumph when it rises, but also provoke fear (in the theme from Jaws). It can become a glittering decoration when repeated as a trill. Tom talks to mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly about the tragic falling semitones of Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas, and also to musicologist Sarha Moore about the varied significances of the semitone in musical traditions of the Middle East and India, and its special effect in the riffs of Heavy Metal rock music. In the Sound of Music, Julie Andrews sang "Tee - a drink with jam and bread - that will bring us back to Doh" - but what makes that "tee" note pull us so inexorably back (by a semitone) to "doh" - the tonic? Tom calls the semitone "the piquant spice that drives the change from one key to another" - powerful effects from a little interval.

The acclaimed mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly tells The Choir presenter Sara Mohr-Pietsch about her choral favourites in the first of a new series of interviews with leading lights of the classical music world - exploring the choral music that inspires them.
Peggy Reynolds provides a historical and musical introduction to one of the great works of French Baroque opera, Jean-Philippe Rameau's Hippolyte et Aricie. We hear from Jeanice Brooks, Professor of Music at the University of Southampton, who identifies Rameau as an almost exact contemporary of Handel and Bach, who started his musical career as an organist and theorist and went on to stage lavish operas for Louis XV as 'Compositeur du Cabinet du Roi'. From writer and mythographer Marina Warner, who unfolds the myth which forms the basis of the opera's narrative, and explores the Racine play which inspired Pellegrin's libretto for Rameau's opera. And from Sarah Connolly, who marvels at the richness of invention in Rameau's music and explores the pivotal role of Phèdre, a woman doomed to an unattainable and incestuous love. Series exploring famous pieces of music and their emotional appeal. Dido's Lament is a popular name for a famous aria, 'When I am laid in earth', from the opera Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell, with the libretto by Nahum Tate. Mezzo soprano Sarah Connolly talks about why she finds the piece, sung by the likes of Janet Baker and Emma Kirkby, so extraordinary, and the skill it takes to perform it. Composer and cellist Philip Shepperd's musical life was transformed when he was part of the rock singer Jeff Buckley's performance of the piece at the 1995 Meltdown Festival.
This is the second podcast in which I feature singers and repertory at the request of one of Dolora Zajick's group of truly amazing young artists. If you click the following link, it will take you to the "Seguidilla" from Carmen, as sung by the bright young mezzo, Allegra de Vita (in photo.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6BLYCj3i28 I have therefore presented a pot-pourri of mostly lyric mezzos singing some of the works tht Mme.De Vita is studying, plus some additional material I feel appropriate. The artists are: Janet Baker, Magdalena Kozena, Joyce di Donato, Sonia Ganassi, Susan Graham, Sarah Connolly, Josephine Veasy, Elina Garanca, Viveca Genaux, Vesselina Kasarova, and (the only more dramatic mezzo), Shirley Verrett. I sincerely hope this podcast will be a useful aid to Mme.De Vita's studies and we wish her our best for future success. (70 min.)
