Tune in as the hosts head back to the Middle Ages to review Army of Darkness, the film that turned horror into high-fantasy chaos. Follow Ash Williams on his quest to survive deadites, skeleton armies, and his own oversized ego. We break down the scares, the slapstick, the endlessly quotable one-liners, and why this cult classic still reigns supreme. Is it horror? Is it comedy? Is it Shakespearean? Probably not — but it is groovy.Haddonfield Horrors PodcastSocials: Insta | Letterboxd | Merch| BlueskyFor Business Email: letterstoomedia@gmail.com
In this episode, Fright Night Flicks reviews Army of Darkness (1992), the most over-the-top and divisive entry in the Evil Dead franchise. We break down how this film leans hard into horror comedy, transforms Ash Williams into a full cult icon, and stands apart from The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II. From Deadites and medieval chaos to quotable moments and franchise legacy, this review looks at where Army of Darkness truly fits within classic horror and why it remains one of the most talked-about Evil Dead movies.#evildead #horrormovies

Regarding the Plague on mankind: They don't run anything. They run everything into the ground. They do not create. They only destroy and set back. They suck the life force and spirit out of our accomplishments. They pit People against one another, against themselves internally, and then incentivize and usher in huge swarms of hostile invaders with completely sub-human, conflicting, and barbaric "cultural" disorders, people with no regard for human life, no empathy, and extremely low comprehension. They are brought in to fininsh off a civilization already weakened and poisoned by the Demonic Parasites. Then these parasites move on to the next civilization that holds within it the guiding spirit of the benevolent creator as this one had, and they hop like a flea onto their backs and begin the process of destroying what God's men built again. The ancient world is a testament to this process.Government doesn't grant rights and privileges. The PEOPLE grant government the privilege of providing protecting and guarding the territory. The infiltrators have instead targeted us, and therefore their privilege MUST be revoked.God doesn't speak to anyone in words, and yet Gnosis is a very real thing. We who have the inner guidance, the intuition, and know the Benevolent Creator works through us. We aren't supposed to be waiting for some miracle or event separate from man. If we want God to intervene, it's done through US, or it isn't done at all and we will all perish waiting for the miracle to come. We are the miracle. Our Purpose is to protect the innocent, hold evil doers accountable, and ensure consequences are felt for crimes committed against God's actual and true people. No work of God can occur without our active participation. We are the soldiers sent to fix the problems and restore justice. We can't be mind-wiped, distracted from, or convinced otherwise by devious and deceptive religious themes. If we want change, WE must bring it. God already gave this vampiric Cult of Child Sacrifice and Torture their final intervention. They had one last opportunity to turn away from their Dark Path. In response they brutally murdered the messenger. That was our cue. We were supposed to handle the matter 2,000 years ago. This week we celebrate Halloween by throwing Wally's 16-year-old son into the wild, chainsaw-swinging, one-liner-spouting madness that is Army of Darkness! Will he think Ash Williams is the original cringe lord? Or will the boomstick win him over and prove that practical effects, skeleton armies, and Sam Raimi chaos still slap in 2025? We grew up calling this peak cinema… now it's time to find out if Gen-Z agrees. From my lips, to your ears – don't eat McDonalds hamburgers. Under any circumstances. I'm falling out of love with movies as I get older. (Are you?) One complaint after another, and I submit to you a reason the movie industry and movie culture is in a state of stagnation for a reason no one else is considering; a lack of visionary PRODUCERS. Roofman, the movie. My 2,500 cents on Mr. Scorsese, the documentary. Big shake up at Studio A.
Oh man, I don't know if I should just put a bunch of movie quotes here (nah, the book already made me sick of them) or a bunch of Ween stuff. Let's go with that one. Hail to the queen, baby, and join the ghouls as we celebrate our hostess with the most-ess, Jacki one of our favorite regulars, AJ. This time, we do not try to scare AJ, but, rather, let him chuckle along at the silly shenanigans that are Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness. The gang celebrates the film's groovy FX. They give Bruce Campbell the props he deserves, and they chuckle at the films slapstick. Marissa, of course, goes on to bring everyone down with a feminist rant about the Evil Dead Movies. But Marissa does redeem herself with some fun history of slapstick comedy trivia. So happy birthday Jacki, you little she-bitch. You really are the heart, brains, and beauty of the ghouls empire. It's time for the Binge Buddies to hop over to the next entry in the super groovy Evil Dead Franchise and return to our pal Ash...vs Evil Dead. The gang covers the first two episodes of the Starz series.
This week the Binge Buddies tackle the Fede Alvarez follow-up to the Sam Raimi Evil Dead Trilogy, simply named Evil Dead.

This week, my brother and I are watching the 1992 movie, Army of Darkness. Both of us remember the movie poster from comic book ads from the time. (It's still not clear to me what the X shaped belt Ash is wearing if for ... I don't think he wears something like that in the actual film). It was my first time seeing in a few decades and Jeremy's first ever. We watched the director's cut (which you can view online), but after a few minutes, I realized that this version was somewhat different from the theatrical release I'd initially seen. The latter has a campier ending that is quite different (though I actually like it better). There are a number of different versions of this film, as discussed here.In the episode, we touch upon the 1970s Conan in NYC comics (see one of the covers here). Check out Jeremy's work over at Pixel Grotto, CBR.com, and Classic Batman Panels on IG. If you are of the DnD persuasion, his articles on DnD Beyond may be right up your alley, and you can view his entire portfolio here. You can also check out his latest book, where he is a co-author: Pathfinder Adventure Path: No Breath to Cry as well as an upcoming exploration TTRPG with Three Sail Studios, Mappa Mundi. Thanks, Jeremy, for coming on the show! As always, thanks for listening!https://13thhr.wordpress.com/2025/03/17/the-thirteenth-hour-podcast-501-welcome-my-brother-jeremy-as-we-talk-about-army-of-darkness-1992/∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Signup for the mailing list for a free special edition podcast, a demo copy of The Thirteenth Hour, and access to retro 80s soundtrack!Like what you see or hear? Army of Darkness, the finale of Sam Raimi's iconic Evil Dead series, is truly a cult classic. A minor departure from the series more comedic/horror roots, it is a film that revels in its absurdity, taking the protagonist, Ash, back through time to the 14th century. Though it is goofier, it is no less fun than the first two. And its one-liners—frequent throughout—remain infinitely quotable to this day. There is a reason Ash and the hordes of undead he's dispatched over the years with prejudice have continued to captivate the hearts and minds of fans. Good ... bad ... we're the guys with the mics! Now, sit back, wash down tiny Ash with a Dragon Stout Fire, and listen up, you primitive screw heads! The Thunderous Wizard, Chumpzilla, and Bling Blake are blasting deadites with our boomsticks!
