This week, my brother and I are watching the 1992 movie, Army of Darkness. Both of us remember the movie poster from comic book ads from the time. (It's still not clear to me what the X shaped belt Ash is wearing if for ... I don't think he wears something like that in the actual film). It was my first time seeing in a few decades and Jeremy's first ever. We watched the director's cut (which you can view online), but after a few minutes, I realized that this version was somewhat different from the theatrical release I'd initially seen. The latter has a campier ending that is quite different (though I actually like it better). There are a number of different versions of this film, as discussed here.In the episode, we touch upon the 1970s Conan in NYC comics (see one of the covers here). Check out Jeremy's work over at Pixel Grotto, CBR.com, and Classic Batman Panels on IG. If you are of the DnD persuasion, his articles on DnD Beyond may be right up your alley, and you can view his entire portfolio here. You can also check out his latest book, where he is a co-author: Pathfinder Adventure Path: No Breath to Cry as well as an upcoming exploration TTRPG with Three Sail Studios, Mappa Mundi. Hail to the king, baby! This episode, the Guys check out the classic Sam Raimi Evil Dead sequel. How does one of the most quotable films hold up? Join us for swords, sorcery, and so many skeleton puppets!
Army of Darkness, the finale of Sam Raimi's iconic Evil Dead series, is truly a cult classic. A minor departure from the series more comedic/horror roots, it is a film that revels in its absurdity, taking the protagonist, Ash, back through time to the 14th century. Though it is goofier, it is no less fun than the first two. And its one-liners—frequent throughout—remain infinitely quotable to this day. There is a reason Ash and the hordes of undead he's dispatched over the years with prejudice have continued to captivate the hearts and minds of fans. Good ... bad ... we're the guys with the mics! Now, sit back, wash down tiny Ash with a Dragon Stout Fire, and listen up, you primitive screw heads! The Thunderous Wizard, Chumpzilla, and Bling Blake are blasting deadites with our boomsticks! Yeah you read that right. Sam Raimi had to pull a lot gross bloody zombie strings to make this one happen. In this final installment of our Evil Dead coverage Matt and Ben dive headfirst into the overwhelming world of Army of Darkness and how this classic started a pop-culture craze that would carry a cult following to this very day. Here's one final farewell episode! This was originally recorded back in the summer of 2023 and it just got lost in the shuffle of edits and different miniseries we were doing, but it's such a fun episode that we wanted to put it out and it's one of our favorite movies of all time!Luke Nielsen returns to the show to discuss Army of Darkness, the third film in the Evil Dead franchise that pivots the genre from hard horror to fantasy/action/comedy and fully develops Ash into the delightfully smug blowhard he has been ever since. We spend a lot of this episode wondering how Bruce Campbell never became an A-list star and we psychoanalyze Sam Raimi as a filmmaker. But like the film itself, this episode is delightfully disjointed and full of fun side quests!Hail to the king, baby! Long live QHE!

No story of the militarization of German society would be complete without talking about the SS. Possibly the most iconic image of Nazi Germany, aside from images of its victims, was the ominous, black-clad figure. Richey Beckett, is a master of pen-and-ink illustration whose meticulous detail has earned him a distinctive place in the world album art, along with film, television and rock poster illustration. Working from his studio in rural Wales, Beckett's craft is defined by an exquisite sense of design, where each line is carefully considered, creating images that are as precise as they are evocative. Drawing inspiration from classic engravers like Doré and Dürer, Beckett's work is a modern homage to timeless traditions, blending the ornate beauty of Art Nouveau with the vibrant essence of psychedelia and the raw textures of nature. His compositions invite viewers to explore their intricacy, finding something new with each glance—a testament to his remarkable technique and dedication. Over the years, Beckett has applied his unique visual language to album art and posters for legendary bands, including Metallica, Mastodon, and Grateful Dead, as well as creating posters for iconic films and series such as Jim Henson's "Labyrinth," HBO's "Game Of Thrones," and Sam Raimi's "Army Of Darkness,". Yet beyond the collaborations, his work stands on its own, drawing the viewer into a visual journey that is as much about what is seen as what is felt. | CONNECT WITH RICHEY BECKETT | https://www.richeybeckett.com/ https://www.instagram.com/richeybeckett/ | PALEHORSE OFFERINGS | https://palehorse.komi.io/ | INTRO MUSIC BY SOMA KIRTAN | https://www.instagram.com/soma_kirtan/ | CLOSING MUSIC BY JOHANNA WARREN | https://tinyurl.com/4sa9bu4h | INTRO VIDEO CLIPS SAMPLED FROM REVOLVER MAGAZINE | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VRiCp1KoL8

Our halloween season movie selection moves into the 1990s with the 3rd entry in the Evil Dead series: Army Of Darkness. Leaning more on comedy and action than the previous two entries, it's still fun to see all the different ways Sam Raimi tries to get Bruce Campbell injured -- well, maybe that final action sequence goes on a bit too long. Army Of Darkness (1990) by Sam Raimi.
Despite Pete and Troy's "sometimes, dead is better," watching, Nate insisted he try the necronomicon to resurrect Charlie. Did it work? Is the show better without Charlie? If a ghost boos in the forest, is anyone really scared? These questions and more might be answered in this exciting new episode....Hail to the King Baby!!!!
