Tom Sermanni is one of the most accomplished coaches in the history of world women's soccer. Currently in his third (though, interim) stint as the head coach of the Australian Women's National Team, Sermanni also coached the US Women's National Team from 2013-2014 and then the Orlando Pride in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). In both settings, Alex Morgan was the team's star. When Sermanni entered the USWNT picture in 2013, Morgan was at the top of her game having starred at the 2012 Olympics the Americans won, and receiving numerous awards and accolades. In Orlando, Morgan was one of the faces of the NWSL and the star used to market the expansion Pride. It's fair to say, Sermanni had a chance to know Morgan at two unique points in her career. He joined Founding Futbol to share his memories of coaching Morgan both on the USWNT and when she was the face of the NWSL during her time on the Pride. Sermanni also shares his journey to Australia to build the women's national team, how he connected with American coaches during that tenure and how it ultimately landed him coaching jobs in the US. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America. Extra Time is an additional weekly episode that shares reactions and reflections from the chapters, and brings additional guests into the fold. Jason Pine chats to Football Ferns coach Tom Sermanni out of Tokyo ahead of their opening game of the Tokyo Olympics against Australia on Wednesday the 21st of July.
In this episode, former Socceroo Gary Cole speaks with Tom Sermanni. Sermanni's success speaks for itself. He has been to five FIFA Women's World Cups: three with the Matildas (1995, 2007 and 2011), one with Canada as an assistant coach (2015) and the fifth with New Zealand in France (2019). He has won the Algarve Cup (2013) with the USA, the Asian Cup with the Matildas (2010), he was also named AFC Coach of the Year (2007). He now has his sights set on taking New Zealand's Football Ferns to the delayed 2020 Olympic Games. Tom has a Pro Licence and a Diploma in Education. He has coached at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), in the now defunct Australian National Soccer League, and in the J-League with Sanfrecce. Along this incredible journey, Tom has coached players of all ages and genders, and it would be fair to say they have all left his tutelage a little wiser than when they started. He is a warm, kind, and compassionate coach which comes out in this candid conversation with Gary.
The Covid Pandemic has been a tricky time for those who are coaching International teams. In this show we catch up with the Football Ferns head coach Tom Sermanni to hear how he is trying to stay focussed on pulling
Football Ferns coach Tom Sermanni has named an experienced squad for the FIFA Women's World Cup in France. The 23-woman squad, who have set the goal of making history for New Zealand by being the first team to win at a World Cup and first to advance from the group stage, is laden with experience with 17 players who competed at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada.Six players Olivia Chance, Victoria Esson, Nadia Olla, Paige Satchell, Sarah Morton and Stephanie Skilton are all selected for their first FIFA Women's World Cup, while Hannah Wilkinson has recovered from a serious knee injury to earn her place. The squad has six players – Ria Percival, Abby Erceg, Ali Riley, Betsy Hassett, Katie Duncan and Annalie Longo (with Rosie White, 99 caps, hoping to bring up her century against the USA) with more than 100 A internationals for New Zealand."I am really happy with the group," said Sermanni. "We have a good balance of experienced players, who have been there and know what it is all about, and we have some young up and coming players to complement that."Those experienced players are very important for this tournament," said Sermanni. "For this particular cycle, including the Olympics, it may be the last one at this level so it makes it critical for them. I know they are all keen to go out with a good impression."The FIFA Women's World Cup will be staged from 7 June to 7 July across nine cities in France. The World No 19 Football Ferns will take on World No 5 Canada, World No 8 the Netherlands and World No 46 Cameroon in Group E.Sermanni praised Wilkinson's determination to come back from an ACL injury she suffered six months ago to earn her place in her third FIFA Women's World Cup. Sermanni is pleased to have the 26-year-old striker, who has scored 25 goals for New Zealand, back in the side."She has done magnificently well," said Sermanni. "In terms of her work ethic, her focus and the way she has gone about her recovery. It has been a model for any young player looking to come back from a serious injury. I caught up with her last week and she is in fantastic shape. We still need to be careful with her, but she is looking good at this stage."A number of players have come back from international retirement or breaks from the game to earn their place in the squad for France. Sarah Gregorius, Abby Erceg, Katie Duncan and perhaps most notably Emma Kete make another World Cup following a spell away from the team."Emma's comeback is a great lesson in maturity and how you can really play your way back in. If you are really focused, work hard and look to do the right things, you have got an opportunity. She has come back into the fold after being away from the team for a long time, but she has shown her intent to be a part of this squad."Sermanni said from a coaching perspective, telling the players who have missed out on selection is the worst part of the job."Everybody talks about the players who make it and their work ethic but the same can be said for the players who have missed out. They have all put in the same level of effort and dedication. It is the toughest job you have as a coach, particularly when it comes to major tournaments."Sermanni, who has been to four FIFA Women's World Cups in his career, said there was a real excitement within the group as they count down to the event."We are all really looking forward to it," he said. "Particularly in Europe. We'll get crowds who are knowledgeable and appreciate good football, great organisation and good stadiums. I think this will be the best World Cup so far and also the most competitive one."Football Ferns squad for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France (Club, Country, Caps and Goals)CJ Bott (Vittsjo GIK, SWE) 16, 1Katie Bowen (Utah Royals, USA) 59, 3Olivia Chance (Everton FC, ENG) 11, 0Daisy Cleverley (University of California, USA) 8, 2Katie Duncan (Onehunga Sports) 122, 1Abby Erceg (North Carolina Courage, USA) 135, 6Victoria Esson (Avaldsnes, NOR)...

Episode 118: National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) season 6 is here and Women’s World Football Show features interviews with Seattle Reign FC Defender Lauren Barnes and Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski; Orlando Pride Defender Carson Pickett; Double G Sports reporter Jayson Love; soundbites from the Orlando Pride's Tom Sermanni, Sydney Leroux, Shelina Zadorsky, and from Utah Royals FC Head Coach Laura Harvey.
We never envisioned having so many new players to talk about in the month since our last episode, but there are a lot of new faces on both Orlando City and the Orlando Pride to discuss on this show. We started out by putting the Cyle Larin transfer to bed. Then we talked about six new Lions since our last outing and it turns out we’re both pretty excited about the Justin Meram trade. We’re also talking about Tom Sermanni’s off-season wizardry, pulling in Sydney Leroux, Emily van Egmond, Poliana, and others. It’s a great appetizer for our interview with Pride defender Shelina Zadorsky, who says she’s looking forward to settling in and becoming a leader on the club. After that, we address the USSF election, U.S. friendlies, the upcoming SheBelieves Cup, and more. We answered listener questions in our #AskTMLPC mailbag and I take the opportunity to ask Dave to give us his spoiler-free thoughts on Black Panther. If there’s something you want us to address on our next show, just tweet it to us @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Here’s how No. 113 went down: 0:12- Cyle Larin is an ex-Lion, while Cam Lindley, Uri Rosell, Justin Meram, Chris Mueller, Amro Tarek, and Lamine Sane are new Lions. Plus, Sermanni’s additions include internationals from the U.S., Brazil, and Australia! 36:58- Shelina Zadorsky spoke to us about leaving the Washington Spirit to come to Orlando, all the players she already knew on the team prior to her arrival, what she thinks of the club’s off-season moves, what she brings to the squad, and a lot more. 48:58- The USSF election wasn’t a surprise but has us feeling kind of meh. But we’ll see what Carlos Cordeiro brings to the table. Plus, the USMNT and USWNT, the SheBelieves Cup, and hey, Black Panther is out. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Mackenzie, Ryan and Rick T. talk to Sacha Kljestan and Tom Sermanni about the upcoming 2018 season.
Man, do we have a lot to talk about this week. Despite Orlando City being off for the international break, there are stories out the ying-yang to bring you. We start with a discussion of the big Kaká announcement and what it means for both the captain and Orlando City. We’re also talking about OCB and the crazy 6-5 home game against New York Red Bulls II. After that, we’re talking about the USMNT — both the good and the bad. The home match against Panama here in Orlando was heavenly but the trip to Trinidad turned into Hell on Earth for the Yanks and their legions of supporters. And we’re all over the Orlando Pride’s first ever playoff game up in Portland. Speaking of the Pride, the gaffer himself joins us. Tom Sermanni discusses the 2017 season, the playoff game at Portland, and what the off-season has in store for the club. We wrap it up with our #AskTMLPC segment and our key match-ups and score predictions for Kaká’s final game in purple this Sunday when the Columbus Crew come to town. Here’s how the magic of No. 107 let fly: 0:12- Kaká calls it a day on his OCSC career, FC Dallas gets a slap on the wrist, OCB doesn’t quit, the USMNT delights then destroys us, and the Pride finish off a great 2017 season in a not-so-great way. 1:17:21- Tom Sermanni is a blast to talk to and he’s very proud of what his Pride accomplished in Year 2. He’s also excited about Year 3 and he gives us an update on Camila’s knee injury. 1:37:15- The mailbag is a little light this week but that’s OK since this show was already running long. In fact, it’s just long enough for us to give you our unlikely-to-be-correct predictions for Orlando City vs. Columbus. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

After a week off due to technical difficulties that were somehow not related in any way to Hurricane Matthew, the PawedCast is back -- and with a special treat. Joining us this week is Orlando Pride Head Coach Tom Sermanni for an exclusive interview. Tom is always a great guest and he talked with us about many topics, including the team's overall first NWSL season, what tweaks need to be made in the off-season, the club's attempts to acquire Caitlin Foord, Ashlyn Harris, Alex Morgan and more. You won't want to miss it. Before that, however, we attend to a bit of business, discussing Orlando City's playoff bid being shut down due to the 1-0 loss to the Montreal Impact. We unpack that game a bit and give you our Man of the Match selections. We also discussed Orlando City B's playoff exit at the hands of New York Red Bulls II, although we both thought it was a rather successful first USL season for OCB. And after the interview with Sermanni, we come back with our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City at Philadelphia Union on Sunday afternoon. Here's how the show went: 0:11- Orlando City dominated every statistical category but the one that mattered against Montreal, falling 1-0 on the Impact's only shot on target. It was a rough way to be eliminated, especially at home. Plus OCB's first season comes to an end. 18:55- Tom Sermanni calls in and gives us his view of the Pride's first season, his thoughts on how to improve the club for 2017, thoughts on the USWNT and its relationship with the NWSL, and much more. 38:05- We present our key match-ups and final score predictions for Sunday's match between Orlando City and the Phildelphia Union. One of my favorite sayings is that the off-season is dark and full of terrors. But this off-season has actually been very exciting, with news about Orlando City player and front office moves and the additions of the NWSL Orlando Pride and USL Orlando City B. Speaking of exciting, we're amped to have Pride Head Coach Tom Sermanni as our guest on this month's show. The veteran coach is a great interview and he seems genuinely stoked about the upcoming NWSL season and the completion of a club roster that already features some of the world's top players. Sermanni talked with us about his team building and tactical philosophies and possibly let slip a player signing to be announced soon. In addition to our interview, we talk about the players Orlando City opted to bring back and those who were let go, and which ones we felt were the biggest surprises. We also discussed the departures of General Manager Paul McDonough and Assistant Coach Ian Fuller and what those moves mean. Here's how the show unfolded: 0:26- Off-season discussion on which Orlando City players had their options denied or picked up and front office moves involving the GM and coaching staff. 22:23- Tom Sermanni! The Pride boss gave us his views on building an NWSL club, why he chose to return to club soccer with Orlando, how he wants to build his team and how he wants it to play. 39:04- Final off-season thoughts on upcoming events and updates on The Mane Land's coverage.
